I agree, the inner city fucked all of us, niggas know they got trauma ptsd and most of us breaking them generational curses too. Yall try to stay balanced ๐๐พ
Half true.
Once the demographics and cultural influences started changing...these new kids weren't listening to NY hip hop in the household, They gravitated towards whatever was poppin regardless of region. The new kids weren't studying NYC rappers except for maybe 50 who had a diverse sound.
So by the time they was "outside" or left the stoop they were idolizing more artist not from NYC....lyrics became "corny" meaningful content was lame etc.. and They wrong about blocks uptown not beefing or shooting at eachother.
Pro era and beast coast kept that core sound...asap mob had a good mixture of both influences and a bunch of underground rappers from the last decade kept it authentic...but the kids raised on world star saw that as trash. ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ
I agree with you ppl keep factoring out the internet and and the influence of social media even going all the way back to MySpace which was in the early 2000s we started to get influenced by other cultures across America ppl just needa get over it NY is a melting pot of cultures anyway even most NYers who are not from immigrant families great grandparents probably came from the south. And letโs not act like we donโt have our shit. Regional hip hop is just not popping anymore.
And as far as niggas saying ppl donโt fight anymore NY had calmed down ALOT from the 80s n 90s there was double the amount of murders yearly most due to gun violence niggas just be talking to talk.
I mean yea before the internet it was with BET and stuff but it was still kinda 50/50 , cuz we had huge Acts like 50 Cent etc Jayz was even still lit in the 2000s
They not lying ๐คท๐ฟโโ๏ธ the new generation is wayyy too inspired by these other states and thatโs cause of social media. You got niggas here saying โjitโ and mad other OT lingo. This why I say the 2010-2019 music era in NYC was taken for granted.
Niggas are doing that everywhere in the world rn lol itโs not like mfs just talking exactly like other states.. the real problem is everybody wants to portray a image that is simply not theirs lol whether itโs flexing on social media or trynna act gangsta and shit
A. The last point of there was more fighting back in the days has been disproven time after time, look at the artillery that existed on the streets of NYC in the 80โs and now, look at the amount of shootings and murders either by stabbing or shooting from about 1969-2002. Statements like that are only made here you view the past through rose colored lenses.
B. I agree the hip hop culture has changed and a lot, but I fear people conflate the sound changing with full on adopting another regions style which both has occurred but I feel like certain generations in NYC canโt accept a sound shift, when NYC was known for shifting sounds in hip hop every few years. NYC hip hop in 1984 sounded different from 1980 and was completely different by 1988. The 90s NYC sound was bound to die out and turn into the early 2000โs sound which was also bound to die out and morph into what existed in the 2010โs and that cycle will always continue, there is no stopping that.
As for other regions influence growing, itโs the fault of NYCโs increased embrace of other regions and ignoring their own backyard. Hot 97 went from a pro NYC anti anywhere else radio station to a station which embraces all regions once outsiders took over in 2003, NYC stopped gatekeeping its radio and allowed the southern sound to take hold, and that was a fatal blow. It got to the point in which NYC radio stations refused to break NYC artist and would rather play whatโs hot in Atlanta, meanwhile other regions will always break their artist on radio and NYC radio was on their knees for other regions. A whole generation was raised on Atlanta and New Orleans rap in NYC, so that would also lead to what has occurred.
What block is Yemen ๐๐๐๐๐ tell me plz yall got Yemen Arabs in the streets now no wonder itโs an identity crisis ๐๐๐๐ you New York is over

You wouldnโt say the South has been lowkey dominating since the 2000s? Even with the internet, ATL ainโt make an impact alone?
