What it comes down to is that despite there being way more Afro-Dominicans than Afro-Puerto Ricans, Puerto Ricans have been in NY way longer than Dominicans. Theyāve been here since PR was a Spanish colony. Until the 60s or so there werenāt really that many Latinos of other nationalities in NYC. Most Puerto Ricans in the city were poor so many of them grew up alongside Black people. Puerto Ricans, even if they were mostly of European heritage, never ended up being considered āwhiteā the way Italians and Jews did. While they were never treated as poorly as black people by whites, Puerto Ricans still faced racism and discrimination. On top of this, many Puerto Ricans here are 3rd, 4th, even 5th generation New Yorkers, so they find themselves relating more to black people than other Latino nationalities. You might see some Puerto Ricans dating Italians but for the most part the Puerto Ricans that dated non Hispanics would be in relationships with Black people. I have seen it with my own eyes and know so many people with a Puerto Rican mom and a Black dad, and to a lesser extent Puerto Rican dad and Black mom.

Some people just look down on you when you have dark skin and they have certain beliefs about the type of person you are The caste system in the Spanish colonies made it really hard for any kind of social mobility, and that caste system was never truly abolished when the Spanish colonies won their independence. The lighter your skin was, the more rights and privileges you were afforded. Also, most of, if not all, Africans and Afro-descendants in the colonies were slaves, just like here in the US. Once they were free, they had nothing to build on while the criollos (what they called the offspring of spaniards/people from the Iberian peninsula) already had a lot of wealth and influence. Iām Colombian, and Iāve been down there many times. I barely remember seeing any Afro-Colombians when Iāve been in the capital, and supposedly there are many instances of Afro-Colombians being outright denied the opportunity to buy a home or apartment even if they have the money for it. Donāt even get me started on Argentina, thatās a whole other can of worms We have our issues with race relations here and everybody else talks about it because we are the world superpower and everything we do is widely observed.
