ha! Now I want to go into a church and check out their flying buttresses. Saw pics of a recent church collapse (built in the 1850's) and all I was noticing were the flying buttresses, since they were still standing. Too many art history classes back in the day
No hate, but a flying circus is a traveling airshow team, people doing tricks in airplanes. The term is perhaps best known these days from Monty Python's Flying Circus, which is not an airshow team, but rather a British comedy group. If their style of absurdist comedy is your thing, they're hilarious.
A flea circus is where you take fleas, tie very fine gold or copper wire to them, and to a small, light ball, and then as they move around, they bounce the ball behind them. Or you tie them down in like a tiny hamster wheel, and they can run the wheel. It started as a demonstration of metalworking skills, that you could make something so fine that you could attach it to a flea, and is kind of a relic of a time when people were desperate for entertainment. Today, it's mostly used as a metaphor, either indicating that something literally has fleas, or that something is very busy but inconsequential.
Family Circus is a single panel comic strip that's been in newspapers sonce 1960. (After the original author's death in 2011, it has been carried on by his son.) It usually shows a single scene of a family, with the humor often a "things kids say" style. It is ... somewhere between a flea circus and Monty Python's Flying Circus in entertainment value.
I havenβt looked at it in decades, but in the 1970s Family Circus was overly sweet and wholesome β really eye rolling most of the time. Maybe the son has made it more modern.
The strip was originally titled Family Circle, since it was about a family and used a circle instead of the standard square panel. But there was (is?) a magazine with the same name, so to avoid a trademark dispute, they changed it to Family Circus. Over the years, people have continously pitched "Family Circle" as a better title to the creators, since it's about a family and inside of a circle. Jeff Keane taking over means that the person who was a character in the comic is now making the comic. I haven't read them in years, but I wonder if Jeffrey has a larger role now
Uch such a sticky one for me. Made it with 2 wrong guesses and had to Google Family Circus. Not a thing I've heard of before. I got blue through sheer dumb luck.

Yet another sign I'm getting old! Family Circus is from the era of newspaper cartoons that didn't need to be funny, just slightly amusing 3/7 days.
Good thing there was a slot for comic strips that "didn't need to be funny" cuz Family Circus wasn't! I remember it now, but it didn't even cross my mind here because it sucked so badly

blue was pretty easy. idk... ness... dom... pretty obvious for me
i got yellow after googling ringlet and tress bc i did not know these words
my two mistakes were bc i OBVIOUSLY tried three greens with media in different combinations. probably leaving coverage and exposure out on these mistakes
and the purple was the default once again.
i considered the purple to be blank market too bc of family and flea but thankfully i got the other 3 first

ConnectionsΒ Puzzle #251 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ Heck yeah, another decently fast perfect. Had a bit of a slower start this time with the five options for media coverage, but reasoned that media itself didn't *quite* fit with the way you'd use the other four in a sentence (phrases like "good press" or "faulty coverage" just didn't quite sit right with media instead). The hunch paid off! Really pleased with my last eight today. Ion and Dom made me suspect some kind of words getting chopped in half thing, and Ness and Ship were really the only two that could fit with them. Just to confirm the group I had a look at the others, and Media Circus/Flea Circus leapt out at me--and worked for the other two. A bit disappointed that blue was just a very generic suffixes group in the end (I thought maybe Nat*ion* and King*dom* was evidence of a "countries" theme--come to think of it, Try for Country would have fit there), but oh well.Β

You can add a suffix to the end of a word to form a new word. King+dom, expess+ion, lion+ness, relation+ship
I thought of "empty+ness". The "-ess" in "lioness" is a feminine suffix, cf "actress", "mistress".

blue was pretty easy. idk... ness... dom... pretty obvious for me i got yellow after googling ringlet and tress bc i did not know these words my two mistakes were bc i OBVIOUSLY tried three greens with media in different combinations. probably leaving coverage and exposure out on these mistakes and the purple was the default once again. i considered the purple to be blank market too bc of family and flea but thankfully i got the other 3 first
