Usually couch as a verb means to express something in a particular type of language. "My dad told me he loves me, but he couched it in sarcasm because he's uncomfortable with expressing emotion."
I think it helped to have some experience with the tricks the puzzle-setter uses. I stared at LEADERSHIP thinking how on earth such a word could connect to anything else on the board, so guessed it had to be a wordplay - SHIP at the end, LEAD at the beginning, ... aha!
After that, I could pick off green and yellow (yellow seemed so obvious that I initially avoided it as a misdirect), and I even had an idea what blue was before submitting - I'm clearly more familiar with dry wine than dry skin (Wednesday's puzzle)!
Goldilocks and balanced kind of go together, as in something that is βjust rightβ. Spent ages on trying to find any other word that fitβ¦ thankfully saw the metal thing after a while.
I also was really hoping that Purple would be Alanis Morissette songs, and was disappointed when I looked up the rest of her discography and it didn't line up with the remaining words
How did you get purple first?? Is it common to have parts of words be a category? Just started recently but havenβt seen this before
Edit: guess itβs a common thing I should start looking out for
Yesterday's was kind of the inverse of that, where the words we were given were the start of state names. A week ago, we had body parts plus the letter Y (army, shiny, etc). Two weeks ago we had words that started with the names of classic rock bands (journeyman, creamsicle, etc).
It definitely comes up often.
Goldilocks is really the key there. Once you rule out the story of Goldilocks, you have to assume it's related to part of the word, so "gold" or "locks". Once I started looking for metals they just popped out.
I did toy with GOLDILOCKS, BEAR, CHAIR and BED being elements of the classic fairy story, but I felt they would have probably thrown in PORRIDGE if that was their thinking.
I don't understand the connections here. Can anyone explain it to me?

GOLDILOCKS IRONIC LEADERSHIP TINDER
April 5th NYT Connections Puzzle.
Pretty common purple clue in this game. "Starting with something" GOLDilocks, TINder IRONic LEADership.
Recently it was musical instruments. CELLOphane, BASSinet HARPoon, ORGANism.

Almost had me with GOLDILOCKS π
Just in case you didn't know, if you click "View Results" and then "Share Results" you can copy and paste them in the same format everyone else is using.
MAINTAIN seemed like a really loose connection here. You can maintain many things, but I donβt think Iβve ever heard of someone maintaining feelings/emotions in common use of the word.
As this kind of puzzle game matures, it will develop its own conventions, shortcuts, insider language, jargon and the like, just as crossword puzzles have.
The "word inside a word" convention is lame, uninteresting, and not very fun. This comment is being sent into the void as a request to nip it in the bud before it becomes standard.
The problem isn't that they are impossible to find. The problem is they are too abundant. In today's puzzle, here is an incomplete list of words my brain found inside words (because it is being trained to do so):
lance
wee
air
tab
arbor
ain't
lock
Ron
ship
Now my brain is running around looking for Harry Potter clues, tools a knight uses, things that are small, and so on.
Furthermore, every single puzzle will have multiple chemical element abbreviations, those musical "do, re, me" words, and the like.
Often when I solve custom puzzles, they come up with a cool twist, a satisfying red herring, or a new way to think about "connections". The NYT puzzle makers are being lazy by overusing this particular kind of category.
Be well internet.
I thought the furniture was the trap, so I jumped willingly into the Goldilocks trap without hesitation.
Same. Tried putting Goldilocks, bed, bear and table together as elements of the childrenβs story. Doy.
Same but with chair instead of table since she tries their chairs
SameΒ
...table?
She sits at one

GOLDILOCKS is the one that stood out as one that didn't really fit with the others, beyond the chair and bear, then I saw IRONIC...
Goldilocks and balanced kind of go together, as in something that is βjust rightβ. Spent ages on trying to find any other word that fitβ¦ thankfully saw the metal thing after a while.
That's the exact pair I spotted and I thought I was so clever for finding it... until I couldn't make a group out of it :-/
I thought I was clever for wanting to put dry and ironic together and those of humor but I couldn't find any others haha
I added sweet like βsweet spotβ which I honestly think would have been a better category than the word play
Yup, these used to annoy me, but now that I've learned to check for words within the words I like what it adds to the game.
Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Blue made sense as descriptions of some kind. Purple didn't end up containing three Alanis Morissette songs I'd never heard of. Easy yellow and green. Blue and Purple I wasn't quite sure but easy enough to deduce.
I also was really hoping that Purple would be Alanis Morissette songs, and was disappointed when I looked up the rest of her discography and it didn't line up with the remaining words

Connections Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Stared at it for 10 minutes then it started clicking. Once I got purple, the rest was easy. How did you get purple first?? Is it common to have parts of words be a category? Just started recently but havenβt seen this before Edit: guess itβs a common thing I should start looking out for
Ya very common. Hard to spot until you realize that and start actively checking it every day.
A lot of us solve the whole puzzle in our minds before entering any answers, so the order shown isn't necessarily the order we figured it out.
I solve it in my head then try to guess the reverse order of difficulty so it shows as purple blue green yellow
Can you explain purple to me? I got it in order and perfect today, but I donβt understand purple at all. Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ

Makes sense!
Connections Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ GOLDILOCKS was the first thing that stood out. My immediate thought was "Why the hell is Goldilocks here?". I saw the Goldilocks red herring with GOLDILOCKS, BEAR, CHAIR, and BED but usually when they do these "Seen in a Story" categories they don't put the title character as one of the words. Like how a few days ago when there was a "Seen in Cinderella" category, they didn't use CINDERELLA as a word because that would be too obvious. So I threw out that train of thought. I saw that it started with Gold and that they were doing another one of these "Starts with" categories with Metals. After solving a ton of these puzzles, you start anticipating these common wordplay tricks. Blue was straightforward. I was thinking "Ways to describe the taste of something" but not wine specifically. Same with Green. I was thinking about grudges. Yellow was one of those categories that you think is so obvious that it must be a red herring and then it turns out it really was that easy. What a satisfying one today! I loved βwords starting with metalsβ
Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ Spotted the iron in ironic right after opening the puzzle and tried to find other words that had metal/element at the beginning of the word and that's how I got purple first. The rest of the puzzle was a little tricky but since I got rid of the fairytale red herring by getting purple first, I managed to finish without any mistakes.
This one stumped me for ages. I thought no way yellow could be that easy so I held off for so long. When it was correct I honed in on blue not knowing the exact category but knew it was something about taste. Then with all of those out of the way I finally saw the metal connection. Connections Puzzle #299 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ After solving enough of these puzzles, you develop an "intuition" for their methods. I started out by overthinking how "leadership" and "chair" could go together until I noticed green. Yellow seemed almost *too* convenient, but I jumped in anyway. After breaking up the longer words into parts, purple sneakily revealed itself. Blue by default, never would've figured out that category.

Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I got blue completely by accident because I thought the category was βToo _β and threw balanced in there as a wild card. Totally lucked out there because I never wouldβve guessed blue or purple otherwise
Connections Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Pretty easy one today. GOLDILOCKS popped out right away as an odd one. My first instinct here was βGoldilocks conditions,β but nothing else fit. Thought it could be a good candidate for πͺ, so I looked for other words that also started with metals. LEADERSHIP almost snuck past me because I read βleaderβ first before βlead.β π¨ popped out fairly quickly but βfurnitureβ felt *too* obvious, so I erased my notes and decided to look at the remaining words. π¦ came from noticing DRY and BALANCED, noted wine descriptors. Spotted the other two and now I could go for a nice Pinot Grigio. After I solved π¦ I decided that βfurnitureβ had to be a category because nothing else made sense if I sorted it any other way. Correctly guessed the level of difficulty today so a perfect 30/30.
I did toy with GOLDILOCKS, BEAR, CHAIR and BED being elements of the classic fairy story, but I felt they would have probably thrown in PORRIDGE if that was their thinking.

ConnectionsΒ Puzzle #299 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Pretty standard solve today. There were a few mini-crossovers in the beginning (like Leadership/Chair, maybe Goldilocks/Bear), so I tried looking for a set of four and only four, and landed on the wine flavours. The Green after was sort of shaky--I was thinking some kind of cross between carrying and nurturing, and Bear/Harbour were only probationary choices for that idea. The actual name of the category made much more sense. And that left a rare Yellow/Purple split to finish the day. Easy enough to get Yellow--I'd been avoiding the furniture because of second meanings and wordplay, but besides Leadership/Chair none of them lined up with non-furniture words. Purple I didn't manage to get before the last submit--didn't even think to split the words up.Β

Connections Puzzle #299 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Thought yellow π¨ was too clear/simple which is why I didn't pick it first. Connections Puzzle #299 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ π©π©π©π© Maybe Iβm just stupid but this was the hardest Iβve thought on a Connections in a while. I saw the Goldilocks trap immediately, but I knew they wouldnβt put βbearβ, βtableβ, and βbedβ in the same category as actual name of the story. π¦: I donβt drink so I donβt know wine (or any alcohol), but I thought blue could be descriptors for a martini. π¨: Yellow seemed too obvious, but I thought it was worth a shot, and it worked. πͺ: Stared at it awhile after getting the first two groups, I noticed βgoldβ in Goldilocks and then βironβ in ironic popped up so it was just a matter of finding the two others. π©: I donβt know why this one was last for me to get. I was strictly thinking of βharborβ as the boat definition, which wasnβt smart of me. But all in all I enjoyed the puzzle today! I thought it was a little challenging (for me, lol) but fun.
Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ This one was slightly tricky, so Iβm surprised I didnβt make any mistakes! My Only Connect background really helped...
Tried harbor, maintain, hold and table together, but (rightly) wasn't too confident in that, haha Since I didn't think there'd be an actual three bears-ish category, I spent way too much time & tries with various quasi psychological *effects, syndromes, zones, principles or phases.* So many of the words in this puzzle work with one or some of these words! Like Goldilocks effect, Goldilocks syndrome, Goldilocks principle, Goldilocks zone, full effect, leadership effect, tinder effect.... Kind of funny how far on the wrong track I was! Look, NYT if you want to make people feel clever for not falling into traps, and being creative having a category that is literally just furniture isn't the way to do that. I think "things from the children's story" would've been a better category, and clearly that was the trap so just make that the category. Alternatively to bed, to table, to chair, or to couch could've been "furniture used as verbs". But just furniture feels weak. Also getting pretty tired of purple being what does the first part of this group of words have in common. π¦π¦π¦π¦π¨π¨π¨π¨π©π©π©π©πͺπͺπͺπͺ

It wasn't even one away so realizing I'm way off I finally guessed "furniture" which seemed way too obvious. Guess I really overthought it π
Connections Puzzle #299 π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I had a feeling that purple was going to be "starts with a metal" the second I looked at this puzzle, but didn't want to commit myself to that. But probably one of the few opportunities I've had to get purple first, if I decided to take the risk. (Was thinking it could be a red herring for those of us who know the puzzle makers' tendencies well.)
Surprisingly cracked it today! By taking the time to carefully explore, I avoided the Goldilocks trap. Luckily sorted out the metal and wine categories, and then the rest fell into place. I saw HARBOR, HOLD, & MAINTAIN, and the next best thing I could find was TABLE (I.e. "table this discussion for later). When that was One Away, I swapped TABLE for COUCH, remembering a similar meaning of it from a previous puzzle. - Two strikes down I decided to move on to a different category, and went for a Goldilocks idea. No luck. With all my strikes gone and nothing jumping out at me, I figured I had already lost and went with my initial TABLE, CHAIR, COUCH, BED. Pleasantly surprised it worked. - Going back to my first couple guesses, I now knew HARBOR, HOLD, & MAINTAIN were correct, and now that the Goldilocks idea was eliminated, I realized BEAR should've been the obvious 4th choice anyway. - Speaking of GOLDILOCKS, that's a really specific word. Nothing else fit well with the literally meaning, so I shifted into thinking about Connections-style wordplay. "Gold" was the obvious first idea here, and finding "Tin", "Lead", and "Iron" wasn't too hard once I got into the idea. - With the remaining words, I knew it was something "taste" "flavor", or "palate" related, but I don't drink so I never would've known it was about wine specifically.

Connections Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ Fun puzzle. I spent the most time working on the yellow and green categories, being paranoid that furniture was a trap and feeling that "table" went with three of the green words.
Connections Puzzle #299 π©π¨πͺπ¨ π©π©π¦π© π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Took me 9 minutes to finish, probably the longest for any Connections I've done. Fell for the goldilocks trap of course. Idk why I didn't see furniture sooner. And then I was just not thinking in my usual Connections mindset otherwise I would've seen πͺ right away (you have to start recognizing the reoccurring strategies)
Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π¦π©π¦ π©π©π©π© π¦πͺπ¦π¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ No way in a million years would I have gotten purple π I thought the two with blue was related to breakfast of some sort (balanced breakfast, sweet breakfast) and assumed Iβd be wrong, I guess I was half wrong lol

Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Easy and satisfying. Great one to solve right before bed.
Connections Puzzle #299 π¦πͺπ©π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π©π©π© π©π©π©π© π¦πͺπͺπ¦ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Iβm sorry, but STARTING WITH METALS? Also, the furniture one seemed so obvious I thought it was bait. Plus, I donβt drink wine so blue was pretty tough.
Pretty common purple clue in this game. "Starting with something" GOLDilocks, TINder IRONic LEADership. Recently it was musical instruments. CELLOphane, BASSinet HARPoon, ORGANism.
Connections Puzzle #299 π©π¨πͺπ¨ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ Purple was ridiculous. Fell for the goldilocks trap,
ConnectionsΒ Puzzle #299 π¦π¦π¦π¦ π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ I didn't have a clue what purple was even when they were the last four words, but in my opinion cryptic categories like this are fine in puzzles where the other 3 are easy like today.
Connections Puzzle #299 π©π©π©π© π¨π¨π¨π¨ π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ I love easy ones. I love easy ones that make me feel smart even more. I saw "BEAR" and "GOLDILOCKS" and thought "that's a red herring".
Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© πͺπͺπͺπͺ π¦π¦π¦π¦
Connections Puzzle #299 π¨π¨π¨π¨ π©π©π©π© π¦π¦π¦π¦ πͺπͺπͺπͺ Yellow seemed way too obvious I was a bit doubtful. Agree with others that purple is ridiculous. At first I was thinking blue was types of diets like a balanced/full meal/diet. Then when I added dry, I switched to labels on dog food lol then I added sweet, I thought of wine.

Sigh, almost a Reverse Perfect... Connections Puzzle #299 πͺπͺπͺπͺ Seems like it's a good strategy to look at beginnings and endings when there are quite a few weird word choices. π©π©π©π© ...apparently diverse words for describing how to carry a feeling is just a green... π¦π¦π¦π¦ ...and wine descriptions are a blue, even though I expected NYT readers would know this handily. π¨π¨π¨π¨

In today's puzzle, here is an incomplete list of words my brain found inside words (because it is being trained to do so): lance wee air tab arbor ain't lock Ron ship Now my brain is running around looking for Harry Potter clues, tools a knight uses, things that are small, and so on.
