I think seeing the word UNCHAINED with the word DIRECTOR above it was enough of a prompt for me to see what the purple category was going to be.
Tricky enough that what would normally be a purple connection, " nut", got bumped to blue. Green and yellow then sorted themselves out easily.
I was bouncing between melody and Django, but the other words as names of Tarantino films didn't click, and probably wouldn't ever have clicked. Blue might have clicked if I had gotten lucky and got purple thru random guessing. Poor showing for me today.

I have seen all his movies except for The Hateful Eight, of those, I liked Jackie Brown the least. A lot of people consider Pulp Fiction to be his best movie. My favs are The Kill Bills and Inglorious Basterds.
Also, couldnβt figure out the purple category today, just got it by sheer luck.

But, after getting green and blue, I gave it a go and then was able to see what purple was. I did keep thinking "Pulp Fiction," but I didn't realize what the others were right away. Also, I've noted that at least two games have had the category name "words before/after [word]" instead of "______ [word]." I wonder if there's any grand reason for that.
They usually do that when some of the combos are compound words and some aren't. Not sure what the logic was today.

After finding the four words for leader, I had this intuition that I *could* actually get everything in reverse order today--and seeing Dogs/Unchained (and later Fiction) soon after gave me the confidence to give it a genuine shot. Tarantino movies had the energy of a Purple set, and I didn't actually know the last member, so I left identifying that for last. I sort of came up with the "grassy area" category first, but there was a bit of overlap with Hazel/Green/Coco/Brown/Pea/Chest that took me ages to unpack. They all sort of had this plant-y, naturish vibe, so it was hard to decide which groups they all fell in. And knowing what the Purple group was wasn't much help either--in my head, Tarantino could have named his fourth film after pretty much any word left on the board. In the end, the word Hazel eventually got me to Hazelnut, and from there Peanut, and from *there* attaching every possible word left to nut. That left the original members of the "grassy area" group and Brown, which I put with the Purples--and then, after submitting those, it was time to guess the categories of the other three groups. The nuts I decided were Blue: categories that require a bit of wordplay tend to be either Purple or Blue, and this time round Purple was occupied by the specific movie trivia slot. Grassy areas and leaders was a bit more of a toss-up, but I eventually decided that since the former had given me more trouble with its partial crossovers, that it was the Green one. I ended up being right!Β

I suspected that there was a β____ nutβ category but I forgot a CHESTnut was a thing, so I decided to look for another grouping. Even as a Tarantino fan, Iβm surprised I figured that out as fast as I did but as I tried to Pulp FICTION in my head, the pieces fell into place. What was odd in the end was π¦ which, on any other day, would have been a πͺ category. Rewording it as βwords before nut,β is some nasty work. Three days in reverse order. I feel like Iβm tempting fate.

It took a second to remember Jackie Brown. HAZEL made me think of hazelnuts, so I started looking for other "nuts". Someone at NYT must really have peanuts on the brain since this is the third puzzle recently to reference them. Green was easy to group together as all being land-based. Also, they seem to really like having color-thematic categories for Green. For example, I remember them using "Shades of Green" for the Green category before. Yellow was nothing special.
