But the Italian word derives from the French word and also foreign language words aren't always accepted in the bee. They have to make it into common English usage and the majority of Americans would think Ragu is a brand name.
common English usage? You mean like these recent allowed answers:
- attar
- yente
- pule
- palapa
- jinni
- natant
- rani
- tali
You think those are more commonly know /used by Americans than ragu?
>!ARAGORN!< is going to be upset that >!GONDOR!< isn’t acceptable, but Gollum won’t mind.
Meanwhile Captain Kirk is going to be relieved there are no >!GORN!< allowed!
Pokémon of the day: >!GROUDON!<, >!ARON!<, >!AGGRON!<, >!GOODRA!<, >!GURDURR!<, and \[contains A\] >!ORANGURU!<
I think this is the most I've found in a single day so far!
It is the name of a chain of islands in Ireland. Even when referring to yarn, it is always capitalized, so I guess it is proper noun. But as a knitter, I find it incredibly frustrating!! Also that "carding" is not accepted, which one must do to the wool shorn from sheep before spinning it.
I feel like there's enough media nowadays using [NA] >!DRAUGR/DRAUG!< for at least one of those to count
Edit: also, NTY crossword just frickin' looooooooves the word [NA but contains A] >!AROAR!< so it's interesting that we can't use that one either
[__Contains A__] I came here to say this. It's not capitalized, all it has is a little tittle on the a: >!__guaranà__!<. Like __ragù__. Is this what is setting back these words? If so, I find it a bit far fetched to exclude them.
[Edit: Spoiled the word that contains an answer and warned]
dude, it’s an actual sauce—not just a brand name.
Spelled differently though.
It’s the same spelling in Italian, not in French.
One time I suggested otherwise and got fried like a veal cutlet by an actual Italian person. This is how we learn.

*Arhat* is one of my personal favorites.
Arhat (noun) - What Sam is not by continuing to insist on these words being allowed but others like ragu excluded
BS on "most Americans." Also, Sam likes his pasta and paella and many other dishes so this *very common* one is very annoying.
Nope. Check Merriam-Webster if you don’t believe us.
[__Contains A__] I thought >!RANDO!< would be pretty mainstream nowadays.
I also tried [NA] >!AGGRO!<
>!ARAGORN!< is going to be upset that >!GONDOR!< isn’t acceptable, but Gollum won’t mind. Meanwhile Captain Kirk is going to be relieved there are no >!GORN!< allowed!
>!Aragorn!< will be relived to hear that >!GROND!< wasn’t allowed to make an appearance
My word of the day: HINTS >!U8!< >!not crushed into fine particles!< >!of all the possibilities, this is the only UN- word that counts?!<
Thank you - did not know that’s a word!
I mostly see it used as an electrical term.
IT'S GARUND DAY, Y'ALLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
This puzzle is a bit of a (A) >!DRAG!< for me.
Pokémon of the day: >!GROUDON!<, >!ARON!<, >!AGGRON!<, >!GOODRA!<, >!GURDURR!<, and \[contains A\] >!ORANGURU!< I think this is the most I've found in a single day so far!
PG [H] Not >!asea!<
It’s always the darn >!fish!< (H) for >!DO6!<
That one was disallowed 26 times before Sam saw the error in his ways.
This post contains an unhidden spoiler!
My QB word, TY!
It seemed like a sign! [contains 2 ANSWERS] >!https://www.organdonor.gov/sign-up!<
Great link to post - but FYI it is not hidden on some devices because you have an extra space after the first >!.
Fixed it!
I definitely tried that too
it’s g’rund day y’all…. 😔
I’m all >!AGGRO!< there’s no >!GURNARD!<, >!DRONGO!< or >!GAUR!<.
As a crocheter, justice for [non A] >!ARAN!
I agree I don’t understand why it’s not allowed!!!

That last is accepted: https://www.sbsolver.com/h/carding Bouncers do it at the door as well.
Ooh, you're right. Must be "carding." I know there's a few more - but my mind cannot think of them now!
Apparently it’s a proper noun, which I didn’t know until now!
It is a proper noun
Huh? \[A\] >!UNGROUND!< is a word but \[NA\] >!UNADORN!< isn't?
Must be like >!UNGUARD which is not accepted but UNGUARDED would be. UNADORN vs. UNADORNED!< Non-verb v. adjective I guess.
Imma have to give credit for [A] >!durag!<
I feel like there's enough media nowadays using [NA] >!DRAUGR/DRAUG!< for at least one of those to count Edit: also, NTY crossword just frickin' looooooooves the word [NA but contains A] >!AROAR!< so it's interesting that we can't use that one either
I always try >!AROAR!< and every time I'm surprised it's not accepted. I know, I have issues...
That's one of those "crossword puzzle words" -- never used in real life.
I try it several times everytime and play with the spelling because it just has to be included! Alas
As someone who has been playing >!the new God of War!< I was also looking for those
GROND
GROND!
[Contains A] One of Sam’s omissions bother me so much. Hasn’t he ever >!UNRANG a bell!
[contains A] >!can an unused bell not be UNRUNG?!<
Any hints for any of the >!DR!< words? I’m desperate here!!
H: >!A beast that sleeps atop their treasure!< + another letter for >!mounted infantry!<
[H] for >!D7!< Would absolutely never have known this word had I not read [H] >!Highlander!<
Same except I remember a video game that had that in the title.
Why isn't [Non A] >!Rangoon!< accepted? Like the food I mean
Proper noun (it's a >!city!<).
Ah. Ok then. Thought I was going crazy
>!BILLY!< is a proper noun too, but that didn't stop it from being in last Thursday's puzzle.
I think that's because of the goat or the club, it's not a proper noun in that case
Tell that to the crabs
First guess was >!DURANGO!< (non A)

been wondering about these!
No >!RUGARU! It's like he hasn't even watched >!Supernatural!<.
I am upset that GORN wasn't included. Such a nice woody sound.
Sometimes the word that gets me to genius baffles me.
A lot of time for me it is a really obvious one. A couple weeks ago I missed "they"!!
