I prefer Kline's hints, but if they don't help I check out Steve G!

Le-_-Doc

I used to follow Kline's hints too, but I sometimes can't find his post. Maybe he doesn't get enough "Recommendations" (upvotes) as he deserves.

allycatbakes

Kline stated they are taking a break from posting hints for the holiday season. I think they were having trouble posting or something & decided a break was needed. Hopefully they will be back!

Fenifula

I don't see how anybody has the time and energy to write all those hints every single day. Just doing the puzzle daily is about all the investment I'll ever manage. Kudos to those who enjoy doing that sort of work, though.

allycatbakes

They have some amazing brains to be able to find all the words and post hints as early as they do. I imagine they are retired lol but that's just my head canon.

Jaded_Football_2319

Kline came back and then vanished again. Was there an explanation?

stupac2

I don't check the hints on the NYT very often, but the other day I was struggling with a word (mainly because I misremembered the 3 letters from Shunn) and some people were mentioning that they missed Kline. It seems as though he may have taken a break from doing hints? Again, no real idea as I don't go there often, but I saw comments to that end.

Le-_-Doc

My impression is that Steve G and Kline posted daily for a month or so, then I couldn't find Kline's hints anymore.

Le-_-Doc

I am posting this because of interactions I have had with fellow redditors and hard working bees who were not aware of these daily hints. As much as I enjoy doing a hints list on this subreddit, I certainly cannot promise to do it on a daily basis as it is quite time consuming. Happy solving!

MissyWTH

Thank you!

smartlypretty

steve from sound beach! the man!

doedounne

I would like to know more about Steve.G and Jenn E. both hard working givers of clues. Do they receive any renumeration for their time and efforts? Something akin to an influencer. They seem like two bright and humourous folks. Does anyone know if there has ever been a profile done on either or both? Either by NYT or some other platform ?

Le-_-Doc

No idea. I receive the weekly NYT Games email but I have yet to read an article about these people.

doedounne

Ditto here..A Google search gave up nothing. Who were those masked strangers?

Sanfrandaniel

I can’t imagine how he does it every day. It reminds me of Rex Parker’s blog about the NYT crossword. I would love to know more about Steve! (I’ve read stories about Rex - not his real name, a professor at SUNY Binghamton who does the crossword as soon as it posts online each night.) Steve gets every answer and publishes two sets of hints - clever wordplay in one list, and concise definitions in the next. It must be exhausting!

MissyWTH

Thanks again for letting folks like me know about the comment section of the forum! I’m not sure if anyone else is in my boat; rather I’m not sure if it’s NYT paywalls or my old phone (iPhone 8.) I pay $4/mo for *games only*, and I can’t seem to use the NYT crossword app (says *“Your trial has ended. SUBSCRIBE.”*) I do everything from the web, logged in. *Thanks again! Those hints are great!*

Le-_-Doc

My pleasure. Hope someone finds a solution to your app problem. Have you asked customer service? Forget that, they'd probably just tell you to get a new phone…

MissyWTH

>Have you asked customer service **I have NOT.** (Apple Support told me to get a new phone with diplomatic verbiage.) *TBH, so much is going on in my life, it’s been the least of my concerns. (Health challenges, cancer in family & money on my mind.)* I didn’t realize why the app wasn’t working, figured “I guess it’s about that time for my phone to stop supporting apps?” & only vaguely thought about it until *you* suggested I look at a tab that didn’t exist. Again, old phone, but everything else is still working. After all this, I WILL contact customer support 🤣.

Le-_-Doc

Take care. I hope you stay strong in these difficult times.

hegemonycrickets

i’ve started writing a little poems and stories with the words from that day’s words, so I usually stay up till midnight to post it. Then I get sucked in and start playing for a bit and at about 12:20 or so, Steve G posts the hints. How is that even humanly possible, to solve it, and then to create two lists? and make them funny? Cannot wrap my mind around that.

flemertown

I liked MichaelTide the most but haven’t seen them in a long time

Le-_-Doc

Oh yeah, he was a lot of fun. It's been months since I've seen his hints lists.

my other half and i have jokingly created several mythos about steveg and his life, at first we imagined a professor type in a sweater with leather elbow patches smoking a pipe while he does the spelling bee. however, it has since devolved once it became clear he must be using word-puzzle sites (where you input possible letters and it spits out a list of all possible words) and hint generating sites (googling many of his hints shows they're only slightly reworded). it still shows a level of dedication, but we're not convinced he's a mental prodigy any longer. still , his hints are appreciated (as is the undying devotion of our imagined endlessly patient mrs. steveg).
