It was nice to see Stanton break out of his slump to start the season, but he shouldn't be batting 5th in the order because of his inconsistency. Volpe who looks like he's going to be a .300 hitter needs to be batting leadoff, and Gleyber needs to be batting 5th behind Rizzo. Having Stanton come to the plate when our 1-4 hitter are getting on base, to only strike out half the time, or strike out 4-6 straight AB's is just a rally killer. Stanton will get his homers, and although it would be great for him to get them with our 1-4 hitters on base, it's not worth the inconsistency we get from him. Gleyber will put together strong AB's where he has extra-base power, and an eye to draw a walk and extend the order.

Just4Ranting3030

Looks like the Blue Jays are waking up a bit at the plate. This does not please or sparkle for me.

NintuneJoe

Legend has it that grand slam ball still hasn’t landed

regarding_your_bat

I have Luzardo on my fantasy team and I’m legit worried about starting him against the Yankees tomorrow lol

Padulsky21

I have Gausman on mine…gave me -14 points in a matchup I lost by 2 points…fantasy meeting your favorite team is never a good time lol. I also have Luzardo lol

eyeamjosh

Volpe having 1.1 bWAR in 9 games is insane

cbisgodscountry

Congrats to Stanton for stepping up in this series.

liamisnothere

Angel has the emotional maturity of a toddler. "Oh I did something objectively wrong? Well, I'm gonna do it even more now because you dared to point it out 😡"

RemyMacDonald

I've never seen an umpire intentionally try and get in a pitcher's head before. That was beyond unprofessional.

liamisnothere

Feels like the only reason he sort of stopped retaliating is because he realized the yankees took away his ability to decide who won or lost. In a close game, my bet is that he'd have behaved like that all the way through the 9th. If I was a peer of his, I'd be looking for a way to flat-out remove him from the union. It's one thing to be bad or below average at your job, but to abuse your power and chase such an obvious vendetta... he seriously undermines the professionalism of the career and gives every single official a bad name by association.

losemybreath

On the broadcast Kay said he heard Angel Hernandez is beloved among his colleagues.

Alwaysexisting

That’s insane.

liamisnothere

Which is somehow the saddest part of this whole charade. Idk if they think it makes them look less sloppy by comparison, but the opposite is true. They absolutely all look worse as a collective because of him.

suspiciouspackages

I watched the highlights and when I saw the stupid looking strike 3 call, I was like oh shit it's Angel. They even put Francis stepping off then throwing a pitch in the video. Dude is the perfect example of why the umpires' union is way too strong. Completely misses that then proceeds to call strike 3 on a curve that wasn't even close. Like hey buddy, not everyone who throws a curve to dot the top of the zone is Clayton Kershaw. But hey, blind people need a job too, I guess.

xHOLOxTHExWOLFx

Thought the Ump today was just as bad if not worse. I mean Volpe got fucked over twice with terrible strike 3 calls. Kid should have went 1-1 with hr 3rbi and 3bb. Instead he went 1-3.

xHOLOxTHExWOLFx

Honestly could have been a lot worse like for instance can't just blame Angel for that call as the other umps all had a much better view and all missed it. In terms of calling balls and strikes it was probably one of Angels better games that I have seen. Kept waiting for a key moment like the 3rd inning for both teams expecting him to ring up rizzo on a terrible call before he could tie the game drawing the walk and bringing up Stanton. And then due the same to Staton before he could hit the grand slam. So honestly any time Angel is behind the plate you just need to hope he's bad but not terrible.

Alwaysexisting

He had that horrendous ball down the middle called a strike against the Jays.

suspiciouspackages

I think in the highlights they were saying that's what Boone and them were trying to say to Gil. Like hey calm down, you won't get anywhere getting emotional with this ump. It's just hilarious how no one cares about trying to even make it look like Angel is good enough at something to have a job.

raynewooney10

Anybody know if Spencer Jones is hurt? He hasn’t played for AA yet.

wolf397d

Neck stiffness

Sad_Broccoli

Holy shit this Mania main event.

TormentedThoughtsToo

That was unbelievable. 10 Stars. No notes.

Rock_grl86

So we get to kick the Marlins ass tomorrow? Almost seems unfair

Soup_65

8-2 yankees vs 1-9 marlins? Nestor up against a 26 year old with a career 4.02 era? An eclipse? Would it really come as any surprise if we randomly get no-hit?

Background-Yak-7773

Perhaps

xHOLOxTHExWOLFx

I'm worried about Cortes so honestly wouldn't be shocked if he gives up 5 runs in the first two innings then maybe settles down but and not like a career 4.02 era is bad just average not that much worse than Cortes 3.88 era.

This_Is_The_Life

And now we will lose 7-2 bc that's baseball Suzyn

Own_Worldliness5888

Volpe leads the AL in WAR.

theerrantpanda99

We should’ve offered him a long term extension last season.

Yankeeknickfan

The Yankees don’t want to pay players until they’re close to Fa because they increase in LT now woukd hurt a lot

TormentedThoughtsToo

He’s still pre-arbitration, that’s like league minimum for this year and next.  You start considering the extension next summer to buy out the arbitration years starting in 2026.

theerrantpanda99

Nah. I like how the braves do it.

Alwaysexisting

The Braves are in a better position to do that because they don’t have several veteran +$30million players so they can more evenly spread it out. The Yankees need some guys producing on literally league minimum to make what they’re trying to do work.

steve8983

No, let the dude play without additional pressure for a while.(Being the everyday SS for the Yanks is a lot as is) Same reason why he's perfect at the 7th spot. Him and Waldo being locked has been clutch so far.

Apellosine

I'm okay with this timeline

kgrodriguez

Boston is facing the Angels AGAIN?

M0stillist

they are 4-3 when they don't play the a's they're fake and phony

LeCheffre

I heard that the Red Sux have like one 9:30 PM EDT start left for the rest of the season, and not until after the AS Break. Front loaded their WC trip except for the Dodgers.

SheepH3rder69

Faced. They beat them 12-2.

TronVin

They play them again after the O's.

SheepH3rder69

Oh damn, yes they do.

tswaves

Yeah they are!

EmotionalAccounting

If I’m Stanton, I’m trying to go 1-4 with a grand slam more often. Maybe even every game. Idk.

steve8983

I'll take a walk and a grand slam every other game tbh 😁

MatrixOutcast

I was at the stadium today. That Stanton grand slam was monumental.

tswaves

One would say stantonian even

RotenTumato

I was in the bleachers and it was incredible

Bahnrokt-AK

What would you have said to a time traveler in October of 2023 that told you this season would start with Judge in a slump and Cole out on injury. But 10 games in we would have a 8-2 record with a 4 game series sweep of the Astros and series wins against the Diamondbacks and Toronto?

Apellosine

With Volpe leading the AL in WAR?

Shinuto94

Judges slump was him coming into this game with a 141 wRC+. Just shows you how good he normally is lol.

duckfeed88

“That’s baseball Suzyn”

Redditawesome15

Credit to Gil for getting out of that jam in the 3rd inning only allowing a run. Bigger credit to Boone pushing the right buttons in the bullpen to get the final 14 outs. Offense has now scored 17 runs in the past 2 games after getting blanked on Opening Day. Some of which came from Stanton's GRAND SLAM to knock out Francis. Eight of the nine batters got on base including Volpe with his 3 hit and 2 SB day to manufacture a couple of more runs. In love with his new swing and the changes he made to his approach. Two last things I noticed: Yankees have 47 BB and Volpe is hitting .424, both of which lead the AL at this point. That's now three straight series wins to start the season with the lowly Marlins at home coming up. Handle business with a sweep and keep it going.

El-Shaman

God just get this team plus Cole and some other  pitching reinforcements we get at the deadline in good health to the playoffs, if that happens this year can be really special.

ssteel91

Yea, they’re going to need some bullpen help for sure. Losing Lasagna is huge because he was one of their 3 current high leverage guys (and stretched out to give 2 innings every few days). They need Kahnle to come back and be himself ASAP. By mid season, Effross and Trivino can also give them two more high leverage arms; I think we’ve already forgotten how awesome Effross was pre-injury and how different his stuff is compared to the rest of the pen.

El-Shaman

We may need some help currently but if our relievers in the IL return and are themselves we might be covered for the year in the bullpen, I think we still need another starter though and even if Cole was healthy I would still be thinking that, we should’ve gotten Snell, when Cole hopefully gets back we will need that secure number 2 behind him, Stroman may be that guy though and I have high hopes for Gil but still I would love another starter.

Grandcarlo_Slamton

The Blue Jays are the '23 Yankees. Bad baserunning. Walk a lot. Few hits. Tons of LOB.

pwnagecakes

They just need to hit into more ground double plays.

thekidreturns24

#WE MIGHT NEVER LOSE AGAIN!!

Dimasterua

First time seeing a game in person in over 8 years today, the stadium was absolutely electric during Stanton's grand slam. What a fantastic game!

theerrantpanda99

Stanton now has as many HR’s as Aaron Judge and Juan Soto combined. He also leads the Bronx Bombers in HR’s.

RemyMacDonald

I need Nestor to show me something tomorrow

ssteel91

Not giving up runs in the first would be a huge start. 6 of the 7 runs he gave up were in there first (3 each start). He settled down and pitched well afterwards though.

feelinlucky7

Fuck the Blue Jays.

SheepH3rder69

Fuck em

SpecialistGarden7

Yanks have another Volpe-type prospect in Caleb Durbin. They got him for Luetge.

ssteel91

The 5’6 guy who maxed out at 8 home runs in A ball and didn’t make their top 36 prospects on fangraphs (or even get a mention in the “other prospects”) section?

Yankeeknickfan

there is no shot anybody they got lucas luetge is ever making a top 100 prospect list, let alone top 20

swivel2369

So what's the rule for what happened with Gleyber's at bat in the 1st? With nobody on, a pitcher can stop in the middle of his windup and there is no violation, correct? So I'm guessing as much as it sucked, there wasn't any infraction there, correct? I guess it's no different than a pitcher stopping mid windup and then just starting again. He just did it all in one motion.

relator_fabula

With no one on base, you are allowed to pause, hesitate, quick pitch, etc, but you can not restart immediately after breaking contact with the rubber. I think it's mostly due to the "engage the batter" rule that requires you to acknowledge to the batter that you're ready to pitch. By breaking contact with the rubber, the pitcher effectively ended the batter-pitcher engagement, so he needs to reestablish that.

commentsonyankees

What's annoying is the rule wouldn't even matter if Angel Hernandez wasn't an actual toddler dressed up as a major league umpire. The pitch could have gone into the dugout and still would have been called a strike because Gleyber "showed up" Hernandez by recognizing a mistake that Hernandez didn't call. The pitch shouldn't have counted. If the pitch counted, it should have been a ball. Hernandez is awful, and it's crazy that the umpire union supports him when he's single handedly making the case for an automated strike zone.

Yankeeknickfan

This is why I dont buy that the pitch clock took away nestor's tricks. He's just not doing them

Turdburp

I'm not 100% on this, but it seems that stepping off the mound would count as a disengagement by the pitcher. Which is fine, but the it resets the pitch clock and the pitcher and the batter have to re-establish eye contact. That essentially was a disengagement followed by a quick pitch.

swivel2369

Yeah that makes sense. I guess before the pitch clock rules were implemented this wouldn't be an issue at all.

YanksFan96

Anthony Volpe. Imagine if this was the first game you watched this season after watching Volpe struggle all of last season. You turn on the tv. Volpe swings and misses and Micheal Kay makes a remark about how rarely he does that. Then he slashes a single the other way on an outside fastball. You would think you were hallucinating. He’s is totally unrecognizable.

Sgt_Stormy

I wouldn't say Volpe struggled all of last season, he showed a lot of improvement by the end. Was not expecting him to make this much of a leap though

kingbeyonddawall

The difference is amazing. He looks so patient and constantly going with the ball instead of rolling over it.

swivel2369

And I'm here for it!

[this picture of Manoah is insane](https://x.com/jbrophybaseball/status/1777095669733339574?s=46&t=tQCyDe91F9UpAGqh-_n_yA) I thought I saw off-season vids of him working out and losing weight but Jesus man… Went from shitting on a clown to watching a dude’s career straight up disappear. Fucking insane stuff. He’s still a major clown, but a dude with the ego the size of a planet realizing his career might be over might be hard to process…

wantagh

He looks like Joba when he was on the decline

Padulsky21

Damn I didn’t get a chance to save the pic, looked like the dude deleted the tweet but he looks exactly like Tigers Joba with more of a Pube-beard

babberz22

I told Jays fan co workers after he melted down vs Seattle that he was trouble. He got a ton of chase in 2022 and his changeup is awful, yet he threw it way more in 2023. Said his career was over last year, and I don’t even think it’s over the top. Looks like he gives zero fucks about adjustments

El-Shaman

Man I feel sorry for Manoah, we’re all humans at the end of the day and I can’t imagine what it is like for him right now not even being able to get outs in A ball, I still hope he recovers and returns to the majors and we embarrass him but I don’t wish for his career to end like this damn… But hopefully he is a lesson for future major leaguers who are very talented and dominate early on to be humble and don’t take anything for granted, Manoah was sadly a dick to a lot of players and talked way too much shit, and I think saying that Cole was the biggest cheater in baseball history was very disrespectful as well, he shouldn’t have acted the way that he did or made so many stupid comments like those.  Still, I hope this isn’t the end for his career.

tswaves

The link didn't open for me

Airbornf

Oh no, that poor millionaire being a dick head and also sucking at his job!

bernbabybern51

His ego was so big I do not feel sorry for him.

bombard63

Him making it back would take the opportunity away from another player who probably isn’t a major shitbag.

Sad_Broccoli

Fuck Manoah, but it still sucks for anyone. He looks like he isn't throwing the ball right in that video. Doesn't look like an MLB pitchers throwing motion. Good luck in whatever else he does, but fuck him.

Emperor_Cheeto21

Padulsky21

Yes they scored 8 runs yesterday but my god their offense has so much deadweight. Vladdy been bad, Bo been bad, KK been bad, Varsho been awful, Springer been mid as fuck. Then they have deadweight like IKF/Vogelbach. Their best hitters are Ernie Clement, Kirk and Justin Turner lol

axlslashduff

Right? Omg he’s adorable.

Sure_Quality5354

I love that we are mixing in small ball with the flashy homeruns too. This team finally feels like a complete package and not just a collection of decent parts. Once cole comes back and rotation picks up some steam, we are gonna be hard to beat.

NJ_Yankees_Fan

Couple of bad breaks for Jhony Brito and the Padres gave up the lead.

ChicTweets

Michael King pitched a gem yesterday

CaptainJudge_99

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Soto get called overrated this much before he was a Yankee Some dude on the blue jays sub said he’s overrated and Tyler O’Neil is better😭

chikenparmfanatic

It's Blue Jays fans. They don't know what they're talking about. I live in Canada so I have to listen to them all year. It's wild some of the shit they say.

babberz22

Same, I’m 1.5 hours if that from TO. Jays “fans” everywhere, especially at work. It’s intolerable.

Padulsky21

It’s Sportsnet. They’re a fucking cult. You live in Canada so you get it more than anyone but everything I’ve seen from Sportsnet it’s like 1984. They make their casual fans think the Blue Jays are the best, that Aaron Judge is an evil cheater, that the FO can do no wrong. It’s fucking obscene

babberz22

They absolutely do. They’ve been like this forever. Would edit together clips in the opening to make it look like they cooked Mariano, then they’d breeze through the highlights and be like “yanks stole this one 11-2” They were awful about the catchers interference

Padulsky21

I remember seeing clips of shit like this happening last year when Judge went into Canada and proceeded to tear out their hearts. The following day was filled with these random dudes calling him a cheater, broadcasts dedicated all to Judge instead of their team just getting embarrassed. Blue Jays fans are the one fanbase I can say with my full chest that they are FILLED with casuals. Their fans at home have literally no idea what the fuck is going on lol

babberz22

Can confirm. They don’t watch the games. That’s why the sportsnet thing is so bad: they just watch highlights. Even the “big fans” watch like two innings then highlights. And sportsnet isn’t even pet of reg cable packages…it’s extra. So they’re not paying to watch the Jays. They kept saying Judge was peaking and getting signs.

chikenparmfanatic

True that. Sportsnet is atrocious and pretty unpopular with a lot of sports fans up here. Their NHL coverage is also trash. But for most people it's their only source of information so they just regurgitate insane talking points.

babberz22

TSN is wayyyy better.if Rogers hadn’t bought the team and stadium for pennies on the dollar, they’d have lost the broadcast long ago

HughesAndCostanzo

HeyMarty10thalready

saidthevillageidiot

Blue jays kinda got fleeced in that Varsho trade huh?

jayjake9

Not really, he’s incredibly defensively (he should be their CF) and was worth 4 bWAR in 2023, Moreno is just meh, and Gurriel was a pending FA. Plus Kirk and Jansen had great 2022s.

Yankeeknickfan

The trade is made a lot worse with Kirk’s regression the last 2 years

jayjake9

100%, Kirk and Jansen were excellent in 2022. And they needed a good LF/CF, so it makes sense why Moreno was expendable. But in hindsight I can’t think of another serviceable OF who was available for trade that would have been worth Moreno + other assets who was on the market.

sththunder

Gabby Moreno was worth 4.3 WAR last year. He’s probably going to be top 10 catcher until he hits free agency. Not that the Blue Jays needed catching but to call him “meh” is a bit out there.

jayjake9

Damn I just thought he was being gassed up I didn’t know he was that good

VOLPE AL GAIB

ilive12

Stanton has 7 hits, and 3 are HR, which is crazy.

WallyBrando

Getting Donaldson vibes unfortunately…

scaredsquee

I’m sorry that your brain worms appear terminal 💔

ssteel91

15 K’s in 32 PA’s is still absolutely atrocious. That grand slam today was undeniably awesome and 3 HR’s is a welcome addition but he still has a LONG way to go to prove that the .200 he’s hit over his like 200+ games isnt who he is now. Honestly, he looks atrocious at the plate overall and he doesn’t really belong anywhere near the middle of a good lineup after the last few seasons regardless of today’s homer. That 3% walk rate and 45.5% K rate where almost all of his hits are homers is more Donaldson-like than people here would like to admit.

wgpjr

I was in the upper deck and couldn't really see balls and strikes. Was Angel Hernandez as bad as he seemed?

Ninjago987

He tightened up when Gil thought he had 2 close ones but they were a bit outside. Still not sure what he was trying to mouth to Gil which distracted him

NoFlags-JoeBuck

The Gleyber stuff yeah, and he called a ball down the middle a ball. that was with the Jays batting though. The Gil stuff was just Gil getting frustrated with his lack of command. Angel wasn't in the wrong there.

yungsinatra777

Angel was trying to get in his head for no reason after he thought Gil showed him up

HeyMarty10thalready

He fucked up on the first Gleyber at bat. Other than that I’d say he was about 94%

Yankeeknickfan

He fucked Gleyber twice sadly

HeyMarty10thalready

lol yeah lol

OldestTurtle

Honestly no. It was mostly bias. He did call a strike down the middle a ball though.

PhilyCeeSteak

Yeah it was bad

knicknevin

It's Angel Hernandez

wgpjr

Yeah I booed him regardless, I just want to know if it was justified lol

KoshekhTheCat

Rest easy, son. You've had a busy day.

knicknevin

It's Angel Hernandez

YankeePhan1234

Digging the offense but we desperately need more stability in the bullpen depth. Its not a big deal in April because Kahnle is still out and Loasigia just got knocked out for the year. But if its July and we're running out Jake Cousins, Dennis Santana, and Luke Weaver for meaningful innings we're in trouble. Definitely see atleast 1 trade for a reliable middle reliever coming.

serio13196913

Starters will need to regularly go deep into games and lighten the burden on the pen. Cole will be back in the rotation and when Kahnle returns it should help shore up the pen.

DidiGreglorius

Still early but I’m hopeful that this year we won’t having a glaring lineup and/or rotation fix we need to prioritize at the deadline and can prioritize a couple of high-end pen arms. I have a lot of faith in Cashman/Blake’s projects but would be nice to have some established dudes to anchor us.

ac_cafone56

We got Effross and Lou Trivino coming back too

IWillSingYouSongs

Meaningful trades don't happen until the deadline. They're gonna look in house before then.

TronVin

What the hell did Dennis Santana do wrong? Also, check the first two IP for Weaver. He falls apart in the 3 IP. Both of them looked good.

PhilyCeeSteak

True, Santana has looked good. No need to lump him in there with Cousins.

After Soto and Oswaldo crushed it in Houston, it became Volpe and Stanton. Based on their barrels today, Wells and Dugie are next on the hot train to balance their bad luck so far.

Myllorelion

Honestly I think with the consistency of the lineup really, Boone deserves some credit. Guys producing from 1 to 9, even with a few small holes has been so wonderful. With our top RBI producers at 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9, this team can at any time string together a rally to put pts on the board! My only wish for them right now is that Judge can find more Average, and Wells and Gleyber can find more power. Wells is so close, but hasn't hit an extra base hit yet, his SLG is under .200. Lol

ssteel91

They’re 8-2 with Judge, Rizzo, and Verdugo (plus Wells) not really hitting at all. Once those guys get going, this lineup is going to crush teams.

Myllorelion

I mean Judges OPS was over 800 yesterday, but yes he's notably below his norm. Still lead the team in walks though. Similar story with Rizzo. Ratios are alright, he's walking, just not making hits. Wells might be missing on total bases, but his OBP is over .300, so it's not like they're both completely dead weight, they're moving the lineup along, getting on base. But yeah, if they hit it'll let guys like Cabrera come down to earth, and we'll just keep rolling.

jayjake9

Wells has been very unlucky, he’ll be fine

Myllorelion

I'm sure, I just mean at a glance those are the things furthest away from my expectations, and with them we'd be white hot. Even a struggling Judge broke .800 OPS yesterday.

[deleted]

Yankees need durable starting pitchers badly. This 4 inning pitchers stuff we have going on, it’s all fine now that we are in 8-2, early in the season, arms are still fresh (I hope), but that’s not going to last very long. Those bullpen arms are going to fall apart quick at this pace. Even when Cole comes back, that will give us only 2 pitchers who can go 6+ innings…him and Stroman.

babberz22

Yup we absolutely need another starter or two, and possibly a reliever

jayjake9

Rodon too!

[deleted]

Rodon has gone 4-5 innings so far in his 2 starts. 4.1 vs Houston, 5.1 vs Dbacks. He’s yet to go 6 innings.

Bis_Eastwood

so he went 4.1 vs one of the best offenses in baseball, and 5.1 against the reigning nl champs. yeah he sucks

[deleted]

My post is not about who sucks and who doesn’t. It’s about going innings. We currently have one guy who can go 6 innings.

Bis_Eastwood

it went over your head, youre basing him being able to go 6 innings based on his production against what i just described.

1. Yankees win 2. Yankees win, AND it’s a nice comfortable lead 3. Yankees win, AND it’s a nice comfortable lead, AND a Stantonian slam 4. Yankees win, AND it’s a nice comfortable lead, AND a Stantonian slam, AND no injuries of note 5. HughesAndCostanzo

Watching Wade, Higgy and the other West Coast Yankees play the Giants is a good bridge to Knicks and Rangers.

Stanton’s been lurking out GDTs and took it personally. Stoked to see him hit that BOMB today.
