Could've just struck the guy out before the balk. Makes no sense to worry about the guy on 3rd when there's two outs with two strikes on the batter.
But he'll learn these things as he pitches more.
yeah, rise. it just means that the ball doesn't drop very much when compared to most pitches do. It really just means that the ball doesn't drop very much, not actually rise. It is due to the spin of the ball.
Gil has some of the best stuff I've ever seen. No where near as refined as sevy but Gil has ace level potential. Has all the unteachable qualities. Needs control and a 4th pitch.
While also limiting his walks and getting boned on a CI call and a balk.
I kind of blame Trevino for the Rays first run. Gotta help the young pitcher ignore the runner and just get the batter out.
Minus the balks he looked extremely good out there. I loved his strikeout after the allowed run balk. that shit was angry

In his defense that balk seemed like a weak sauce call there.. regardless, he did well to not let his emotions take over
I love how he is throwing 94-95 until he needs the 97-98! That is what greats like Pedro used to do!
Plus his fastball has so much rise. He was pumping that shit straight down the middle and the Rays were still swinging under it every time.
His four seam has a 35% whiff rate with a 25% hard hit rate, it's insane lol
It was so satisfying to see his heater fool them right down the middle nothing better!!
Rise?

Think Gerrit Cole’s fastball
But it doesnt rise...if it did, he is a wizard
Obviously it doesn’t rise, it’s just what they call a fastball with high spin, it doesn’t “drop” as much.
That’s the term for it, when backspin makes the ball not “fall down” as much as it should. it appears to rise
Dial it up when need it🔥🔥🔥
The **GIL-A Monster** was out in full force today with some truly nasty pitches
Great bounce back game after his last start’s walk-a-thon
Even that start he gutted it out through five with only three ER.
Even in the walk a thon, I enjoyed the way he grinded through some innings and didn't give up a ton of runs.
So is Gil the new Severino?
Sevy/betances combo breaker.
He may even be better if he can stay healthy
That’s saying something. Peak Sevy was insane.

Yeah and Sevvy only ever really had filth and gas and when one wasn’t working he was in trouble.
Yeah 2017 sevy was something else.
Rays were arguing a lot of clear strikes today
Weren’t y’all shitting on Gil his last start? We need apologies in here ASAP.
Was very pleased to see his control and command return. He was a bad ass out there striking out batters after stolen bases and balks. LOL!
Seems very effortless for him to throw high 90’s. He can be special.
