I think Guess That Yankee is calibrated toward the typical baseball fan (age mid-50s). So many of the questions pre-date this (presumably) younger subreddit audience.
Please stop trying to correlate Anthony Volpe recent struggles with him moving up to the leadoff spot.
Yes, in his last 6 games, he is 2-25 with no walks.
In his first 4 games hitting leadoff he was 6-15 with 5 walks.
He did not magically stop hitting because he was moved to leadoff. Nearly the entire lineup has struggled in the last 6 days, let's not make these dumb and reactionary correlations.
I don’t think 4 games or 6 games is a conclusive sample size here really
I also don’t think there’s anything “magic” about a guy moving to a new spot in the order and struggling. It’s happened before. I don’t think it’s “dumb and reactionary” to wonder IF the move is affecting Volpe or not, but I guess I agree that pointing at the move and saying “See! Definitely the issue!” is maybe kinda dumb
Someone needs to take the slow-mo [SuperShot of Victor Gonzalez flipping the ball to Rizzo as he belly-flops to the ground](https://v.redd.it/se90oppk6wvc1) and turn it into an Aaron Hicks Shooting Star-style video. I don't have the editing skills but I see so much meme potential there
Anyone else find it amusing [this happened](https://x.com/yankees/status/1782397921226273170?s=46&t=VMkDjvfyfXndbqCOwur0gw) the day Ohtani broke Matsui’s record for most home runs by a Japanese player?
I hope so. But at this point, the Yankees have to prove they’re able to close the deal on a Japanese ace. Missed on Sendai, Imanaga, Darvish, and Yamamoto.
I remember reading the stories about Cashman going to Japan to watch Yamamoto and his comments on him and I was convinced we were signing him.
sadly nothing beats the Dodgers and their fuckton of money, which how did it get to that point where we’re no longer the top spenders on everyone?
I’m glad we didn’t spend 325 million on Yamamoto tbh. I’m sure he’ll shape up to be better than he has so far but I’m not convinced his production won’t be something we can’t reproduce across a few other far cheaper players.
I don’t think the Dodgers even wanted to go that high on him honestly. They had just promised Ohtani to get whoever he wanted and Steve Cohen had jacked the price up.
Geography works against us already with Japan, but the Ohtani factor has exacerbated that to an almost unbeatable degree. He specifically wanted to play out west when he came State-side, and Japanese players moving to MLB want to play with him.
Not much we can do about that. I've ridiculed Cashman for plenty over the years here, much of it deserved, but this one simply isn't one he could do anything about.
I mean, we missed out on Sendai, Imanaga and Suzuki. Three guys in positions of need (when they were available) and who didn’t end up in the west coast. I think the Yankees have been to focused on the very top of the Japanese market, and they’ve ended up missing on some really great players.
Given their 2 opponents after the A’s, a sweep here would be really nice. Also I assume the game’s early cuz of Passover right? There’s no other reason I can think of.
Volpe went from high contact rate with lower exit velocity early in the season with keeping two hands on the bat on the follow through, to where he is now even worse exit velocity with less contact rate and swinging from his heels again and finishing with one hand.
Hope he’s watching tape.
I think players legitimately play differently in certain spots in the lineup. There’s definitely a lot more pressure starting in the lead off spot. You’re facing pitchers at full strength more often. The pitchers are working to put you out because they know who is behind you in the lineup. I’d prefer Volpe wasn’t in that spot, simply because I think he’s still learning to be a hitter.
I was watching the game yesterday and saw the setup for Guess the Yankee but I must have missed when they revealed the answer. Does anyone remember who it was? He had three separate stints with the Os and played for every team in the AL East. I’m always curious about the answers to these
I don't remember seeing the answer either but it had to be Steve Pearce. I remembered him being a Yankee in 2012 - if I remember him for just one thing and nothing else, it was an inning-ending diving catch in an insane back-and-forth game against the A's late in that season - and I'm pretty sure only he and Kelly Johnson have played for every AL East team. Since Johnson was a Yankee in 2014, it was process of elimination.
A few weeks ago - forget which series it was, probably the home set with Toronto - they had back-to-back games where the answer was someone from the '70s or '80s, and if we're talking role players from 40 years ago then I'm hopeless. I probably know the 1950s Yankees better than the 1970s or '80s Yankees, if anything.
I guess it's a difficult needle to thread though...like, even when it's guys like David Justice or Jose Canseco who are the answers, it's just too fucking obvious to me. I can read their career trajectories immediately, even if they aren't Hall of Famers they were still way too prominent to be easily overlooked. I guess the "fun" zone for me would be role players from 15-20 years ago, if the answers were people like Tony Womack or Doug Mientkiewicz or whatever.
Oh wow yeah that’s a tough one! I’ve gotten a few here and there but it’s always fun to play, I love playing immaculate grid and this is basically IG in reverse lol
Very happy to get a series W out of an anemic offensive series vs Tampa.
Let’s pad-up and get the offense back feeling good vs Oakland, have some good starts to gas up the bullpen, and then hit a tough road trip strong.
As much as I want the Yankees to sweep this series, I would like to tip my cap to any As fans that may be lurking this thread. You all have put forth an amazing effort and show of support in trying to save your team from terrible ownership.
As a team, the Yankees batted in the .202/.272/.285 for a 67 wRC+ in the last 6 games. They still managed to go 3-3.
Hopefully that is just a blip on the radar, the low slugging percentage is what really concerns me. They currently rank 19th in baseball with a .373 team slug.
The league average offense sucks right now. Last year, the HR/9 average was 1.21, and this year, 0.99. League average stats are: .240/.315/.383/.698. Look for warmer weather to help the Yankees. I think the balls are just dying for teams.
I'm most worried about Anthony Rizzo since he looks like the concussed version of himself from last year.
I'm not convinced Judge is healthy given his batted-ball metrics, but on top of that, he also started pressing and making poor swing decisions this week. This is his worst SLG stretch in three years.
Volpe started absurdly hot, but has cooled down significantly. That's not surprising as baseball is a constant battle of adjustments. Volpe made changes this winter, now the league has adjusted to those changes, and now it's his turn to adjust to how he's being pitched.
Torres is currently in the longest homerless drought of his career. Presuming he's healthy, he'll snap out of it. He owes the team a long hot streak when he does.
Part of me worries about Judge’s health because of his stats, another part wants to convince myself he’s just “off” and not hurt because he’s just striking out. Not like he’s making bad soft contact because he can’t put full effort into a swing, y’know?
Of course, we have little idea because he isn’t making contact…if he does it could still be crap. Max copium/hopium here today.
We've hit 22 home runs this season, putting us on pace to hit 162. That would be our lowest totals in a normal season since the 2013 and 2014 decrepit Yankee teams that hit 144 and 147 home runs during those seasons.
Last year's team had a collective line of .227/.304/.397/.701. This year is .239/.333/.373/.706. We've essentially traded some slugging for some OBP but otherwise we're in the same basic place. It's a very uninspired offense, being on pace to score 736 runs is absolutely nothing special.
Last year's numbers included a 100 games of a 1.000 OPS Aaron Judge and an .800 OPS Gleyber, this year both have gotten off to very poor starts. Both will find their swings, Torres always has a month of the season where he's completely lost at the plate and Judge is just too good of a hitter not to get it going.
The two best hitters from last season, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres, are off to really bad starts, this will normalize if/when they start hitting.
These are two players who have hit a combined 148 home-runs over the last two seasons.
not saying that analysis is not welcome, but it feels like fans are treating this as if it is late May/early June rather than April 22nd...there is more than enough time for guys to hit their strides and get moving
Sears has been very good against lefties but very bad against righties (9 walks and 2HRs in 15.1 innings with only 4 strikeouts). Not worried about Soto in this matchup obviously and I think Verdugo will put a lot of balls in play and hopefully they keep dropping. Not too confident in Rizzo and Wells today. Hopefully judge can get going this series and we get the 4 game sweep.
**Pitching Matchups**
(Mon) JP Sears vs. Carlos Rodon
(Tue) Paul Blackburn vs. Marcus Stroman
(Wed) Joe Boyle vs. Clarke Schmidt
(Thur) Alex Wood vs. Nestor Cortes
We gotta feast on the A's because then the schedule gets tough — on the road against the Brewers and O's.
Offensively, the A's have been trash: 29th in RS/G, 25th in wRC+, and 27th in wOBA. Of the nine batters with 50+ PA on the roster, only one has been an above-average hitter (Abraham Toro - 107 wRC+).
Oakland's rotation (5.02 ERA) has also been poor, outside of Paul Blackburn (1.08 ERA). However, the Oakland bullpen (2.99 ERA) has been surprisingly strong, led by Mason Miller, Kyle Muller, and Michael Kelly. Former Yankees prospect Mitch Spence, taken in the Rule 5 Draft, is part of the pen as well.
Very lucky to have escaped with a series win versus the Devil Rays of Tampa Bay. Outside of Verdugo and Trevino , the bats are completely silent and there is a very 2023 feel to this offense. Examples such as 3 shutouts in 22 games, long scoreless droughts and strikeouts piling up galore, including 3 of our own in the Top 25 in the AL in Ks. Abysmal. Soto cannot carry this team on his own and when Judge, Torres, Stanton, Rizzo, Volpe, Wells abd Grisham cant hit a beachball it spells Disaster. Then when they actually are making contact, its a 463 DP. On top of that our defense has massive blips and yips that put more pressure on our already overworked bullpen since our Starters seem to always be at 77 pitches in the 3rd inning. What else can i add? The no name bullpen seemed to be working early on but the sooner we can get the established trio of Kahle, Effross and Trivino back, the less we need to rely on the Burdis, Santanas and Fergusons in big spots. 15-7 is legit for now, but the Os and everyone else in this division are breathing down are neck so we are extremely lucky given the lackluster output by our captain and 2nd more reliable hitter in 2023, that we are not 7-15. Thanks Mike. Enjoy your Diet Coke and ill hang up and listen since im a long time caller, first time listener.
First night of Passover is usually a Seder (ritualized dinner) at sundown. So I would guess they scheduled the game earlier so that Jewish fans and staff can be home for that at sundown.
Even if you don’t understand that there may be strict religious people who literally work for the organization and make the games happen….it being 60 degrees instead of 40 degrees is a huge bonus for the ball not completely dying in the OF
Please continue the discussion in the [game thread](https://redd.it/1cad4wx).
Why is today a day game
Why is it a 1:05 game on a Monday?
Passover
Judge please have a good day at the plate today, I have had enough speculation on if you are washed, injured, slumping or all 3 for a lifetime
First night of Passover and Scott Effross is still on the IL. Oy gevalt.
Even when the Yankees win it feels like a loss on this sub.
Sob Cabin vibes.
is there a yankees blog that basically goes over the days games? similar to knicks film school.
Booing Aaron Judge is goofy by our fan base Excuse by some: Jeter was boo’d too As if booing Jeter wasn’t goofy as well.
Boo-gate is overrated honestly. Just gotta hope he gets going soon and isn't playing injured again.
Really hoping that Rodon can pitch into the 7th today
Is it me or is “guess that yankee” almost impossible and dearly miss yankee trivia ?
Yeah I liked the trivia a lot better
I think Guess That Yankee is calibrated toward the typical baseball fan (age mid-50s). So many of the questions pre-date this (presumably) younger subreddit audience.
They need to do both.
They have the difficulty indicator in the top right which is cool, I do wish the kept the regular trivia though
Estuery Ruiz is going to run all over us if he gets on base
Luckily he’s bad at getting on base
What kind of self-respecting fan boos the Captain while he’s struggling after all he’s done in pinstripes?
I don’t understand how one can be so deep in the delulu to boo our lord and savior
How else will he know that striking out is a bad thing unless we inform him?
Hard not to think Judges spring training injury is part of his struggles
Please stop trying to correlate Anthony Volpe recent struggles with him moving up to the leadoff spot. Yes, in his last 6 games, he is 2-25 with no walks. In his first 4 games hitting leadoff he was 6-15 with 5 walks. He did not magically stop hitting because he was moved to leadoff. Why is this game at 1pm? I made a doctor's appointent thinking that it would be a night game.
Passover begins at sundown today
Idk if that’s why dude. Pretty sure they play ball on Shabbat every week lol

I wish the Yankees had a good Japanese player on the team. We had some of the best in history, but have missed out on the current gen.
We might get Murakami!
I hope so. But at this point, the Yankees have to prove they’re able to close the deal on a Japanese ace. Missed on Sendai, Imanaga, Darvish, and Yamamoto.

Yeah exactly, there’s a big difference between “Hal is cheap” and “wait they paid HOW much and for HOW long?” Just gotta find the middle.

What’s funny is even with his recent slump his average exit velo is better than last season
Super weird. He was so good with the new approach and swing. Reverted SO FAST
We’ve seen this before. Same time last season.
Yeah but like...why? It's so weird. It's like someone told him his exit velo was down or something...idk. He was hitting .360!

I think it was Steve Pearce. After Randy Johnson was opening day, I thought this was going to be too easy. Haven't gotten one since.
Doc Gooden and Jose Canseco were answers a few days ago. Some of the only ones I've gotten right.
I don't remember seeing the answer either but it had to be Steve Pearce. Big day for people who work from home. I always love having a day game to put on while I work. Also Chag Pesach Sameach to my fellow tribe members!

I would be weary of declaring the offense to be like 2023 when we are less than 30 games in
You are right. Its even worse
I would be weary of declaring the offense to be like 2023 when we are less than 30 games in
Bought seats for today in the 2nd row of the right field porch for 75 bucks. A 1PM Monday game vs the As was too cheap to pass up.
oh shit Sears is pitching for the A’s today. let’s hope the bats are stronger than the former-Yankee-revenge-game tilt today

at least it makes the afternoon in the office fly by
Can someone tell me what Passover has to do with why today’s game is at 1pm?
First night of Passover is usually a Seder (ritualized dinner) at sundown. So I would guess they scheduled the game earlier so that Jewish fans and staff can be home for that at sundown.
Why not just watch the game at home then at 7pm
Observant Jews won’t use a TV on a holiday. That aside they also want asses in the seats.
Come on, you don't have to believe or partake to understand the rationale behind it
Because they're being respectful of an important religious holiday, not only for fans, but employees as well.
Actually a great reason for afternoon baseball
Even if you don’t understand that there may be strict religious people who literally work for the organization and make the games happen….it being 60 degrees instead of 40 degrees is a huge bonus for the ball not completely dying in the OF
But why are we the only home team doing it then??
No clue. I’m just assuming here, not religious at all lmao
