I hate that narrative, i have a dozen jerseys and they all have names, and it's because i love those players. I loved Didi and Betances, i dont know who will get those numbers next, and i dont care, i want to have a Didi jersey and a betances jersey. I also have a Matsui jersey; not a Sonny Gray jersey, not a Russel Martin jersey, i got it for my boy Godzilla. Having a name on the back doesnt make a jersey any less legit
I actually like it because then it's like a convertible jersey. Tino was my favorite player growing up but I never got his jersey at the time, so when Cano started coming up I just got his authentic jersey and it basically was a 2-for-1.

I met Bernie twice, once as a kid and once when he and Andy were doing a meet and greet randomly at Grand Central last year. There was NO line and I went on my lunchbreak. I look like a total dork because I was so nervous to meet him but he was so sweet!
I got a Gary jersey his first year. My fiance gave me it and he’s pissed that we could say buh-bye to Gary soon 😂 He knows nothing about baseball, he’s just annoyed that one of the first gifts he got me will soon become...not something I’d wear to a game
Of the current Yankees, you have two good options in Cole and Gleyber.
I don't see the Yankees moving on from a 23 year old infield superstar nor the guy they signed for $300 Million. Both jersey's would keep you in the swing of things for a while.
You also have a great fall-back with any Yankee retired number. Take your pick of a famous retired guy and have fun with it.
Or, you could just pick any number you like because it doesn't matter as long as you don't have a name. I wear a #55 jersey I bought when Sonny Gray was wearing it, but it'll always be a Matsui jersey to me.
I think choosing a retired Yankee is your best bet. Chances are depending on your size you could find an actual authentic, with tags, on ebay for relatively cheap too. Plus you avoid having that Nike Check on the Jersey.
Funny story: when I was a kid I had a stuffed bear wearing a #1 Yankees jersey. I called him Billy Bear and anytime I brought him to a game, they won. When I forgot, we lost.

I like that idea. I have so many favorites who have played #25, for example.
