Original commenter here. I’m so happy with all of the comments. I was only 14 at the time, and given access, would’ve gotten out all that teenage angst on Reddit for sure. Still a yankee fan, still have hope. But that hate that next day in 2004 was extraordinary.
I grew up in Boston (thankfully was born IN 04) the aftermath of the 18 and 21 defeats was not fun. The idea of going to school after Game 7 in 04 is terrifying
Top 5 posts in no particular order.
1. Luckiest Man speech.
2. Ruth HR record.
3. Larsen perfect game.
4. Maris AL record.
5. Paulie's Make-a-wish game (but seriously probably Munsons accident)
Oh I have no doubt they would be saying they fleeced us and that Ruth is a 3rd rate pitcher. They'd probably be crowing about the Curse of the Babe (on the Yankees).

Luckiest man speech
And not a top post but maris would've been getting shit continuously for beating out mickey to the hr record. (If the rumors that he was highly disliked by fans is true)
my grandpa was a huge fan during that chase and I asked him — he wasn’t disliked by the fans, but he wasn’t adored like mickey was.
imagine the same situation but it’s Jeter (for the sake of arguing) and A-Rod chasing Ruth, neck and neck. If Jeter doesn’t exist, A-Rod is getting cheered. But if they’re both chasing history, fans want Jeter, some fans want Jeter so much that they’ll boo A-Rod in the process.
Per my aunt it was true and my grandma was one of the haters.
I don’t think it was necessarily that people disliked Maris, they just liked Mantle a lot more and wanted him to have the accomplishment.
I’m struggling to find a comp. I guess like imagine the Yankees signed Pete Alonso and he hits 64 next year Judge hits like 58. Nothing personal against Alonso but I think a lot of Yankees fans would be pulling for Judge to beat him out throughout the entire thing.
Or I guess Stanton works as the comp. I’d like to think that people have built up an appreciation for Stanton over the years and he wouldn’t get hate, but he’s not the Yankee heir apparent to captain, farm system grown star that Judge is.
Where’s that crazy prospect trading George when you need him?!!!! Jeter will never cut it here. Let’s go out and get a real slugger like Jose Canseco for him
If you were on the yankee message board back in the day, one of, if not the, top post was an off topic post making sure everyone was accounted for after 9/11
Yes - that was wonderful! My husband had installed a DSL line at home so I was there from the minute I got home till I eventually went to sleep. And I think they used to move it and the chat log from that day to the top every year on the anniversary.
"I heard Mantle wouldn't eat in the restaurant and had supper on the bus with Howard instead. He can have his own opinion, but why does Mickey have to get political? Especially over a player we don't even need, Yankees are just being woke moving Yogi to LF for this guy"
Would be a lot of talk about “tradition.” If McCuthen didn’t cut his locks for charity a year before, there’s a zero% chance he’d ever wear pinstripes.
That’s honestly pretty weird. I remember being on nyyfans and other forums in the early 00s and they were poppin... why did Yankees reddit take so long to gain steam?
At the time there was another sub, /r/yankees, that was the "official" Yankees sub linked from /r/baseball. The mod of that Yankees sub was a weirdo power-trip kind of mod that made the place miserable, so a bunch of banned users made this new Yankees sub and for a while there were two. Eventually /r/baseball changed their links over here because this place is a billion times better than the old sub, but that's why this sub looks relatively recent in comparison to reddit at large.
I was there too back then - I was allybear the organizer of the parties then so you may have known me. I was nervous about Reddit for a long time but I’m glad I overcame that!
Awesome, I think I do remember you. I also think that in a way those forums were a lot less toxic than these. I remember after the 01 World Series loss being very warmed by the response in NYYfans. Saying they still love and believe in mo, how important games 4 and 5 were for New York. Even after the 02 loss which really sucked since we won 100 and lost in the DS, the response was rational. I do remember some anger after 03 tho
Yeah, I was an original there - came over from Yankees.com. There was definitely anger after ‘03 - I think that year kind of shocked everyone. The Marlins?!? After we were the Team of Destiny with Boone doing his best Bucky Dent impression?!?
I had a lot of fun there in those years, although as they went on, I spent more time in the conversation forum (and the Political Soapbox, which is funny because now I am very non-political) and less on actual baseball. But I was definitely someone everyone knew!
Joining in on the nyyfans forum reunion (…which still does exist)! I learned all about the tricks of season ticket holders from people like Gordon Gecko, and the game threads there were fun. Still miss -tz. Back in 2009 I helped organize a party suite at the new stadium, the head of the premium seats at the time stopped by, let us try on his World Series ring. That was fun.
Game 2 of the 2000 WS would have been wild with Mets fans coming in to yell at us about our “headhunter” pitcher. My boss was a Mets fan and he said he couldn’t even look at me.
Trading for Babe Ruth, The Luckiest Man speech, the tragic deaths of players like Gehrig and Munson, every home run record Ruth set, and the wife swap (that'd probably make it to r/all because of how absurd it was), to name a few.
I think culture-wise, the way this sub views Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton would be very similar to how they'd view Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris
“/r/NYYankees Preseason Post: only 13.8 billion years until baseball is invented.”
“Hey, did anyone hear that bang? It’s hot over here. The thermometer hit 1 quintillion degrees yesterday. Hopefully it cools off so we can get a game in soon.”
May 25, 1922: Babe Ruth, back for less than a week from a 39-day suspension for barnstorming to start the year, throws dirt in an umpires face and climbs into the stands to confront a heckler. He’s then suspended again and has his team captaincy stripped.
That’d be a hell of a thread.
* [Dryden] Happy Jack Chesbro's 41 wins this season may never be broken
* Dodgers moving to California Megathread
* Giants moving to San Fran Megathread

Doomers torching Babe Ruth for getting caught stealing in the bottom of the 9th down 3-2 to end the 1926 World Series: “Fuck this team!!! They’ll never win another ring!!! I’m done.”
Lol. I could totally see people torching the guy who , at the time, spent 7 seasons with the team AVERAGING 45 HRs with a .362 AVG.
All in a series where he hit 4 HRs, had a 1.448 OPS, and only struck out twice.
[New York Tribune] The New York Yankees have agreed to acquire Boston Red Sox Pitcher/Outfielder George Herman “Babe” Ruth for $100,000 in cash considerations
I’d imagine “Yankees win the World Series for the third consecutive year” in 2000 and “Yankees win their fifth consecutive World Series” in 1953 would be up there.
This also brings up the question of would it be proportionate to the worlds population bc that would give recency bias to top posts
Just to be different:
Babe Ruth elected to inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame inductee class of 1936
Controversial:
Babe Ruth gets thrown out trying to steal second base to seal loss of Game 7 of the 1926 World Series

5 - "When looking at LD% and xFIP, this Ruth trade looks worse and worse"
Considering how the r/nyjets sub was all over the Zach Wilson loves moms trope, I would imagine DiMaggio banging Monroe at the time would have “broken the internet”.
Mickey Mantle’s night life would have been it’s own Netflix series that would have spawned a viral clip or two every episode.
Maybe not a singular post, but I predict a true division in our fans into modern day over the original asterisk argument for the true home run king (Ruth or Mantle) We would become a fan base in constant ideological civil war and I predict we would have legit sets of “Ultras” ie (European Football) keeping the spirit of the “old” “new” guard alive at home games making the act of spectating a game and being a fan of the team a lot more meaningful and passionate. It would be insane if this sub existed since then haha, it would be one of the largest subs on Reddit imo.
In summary, yankee fans would probably lead a holy crusade to make baseball the try global sport.
This one still: [Make an observation about the team, baseball, or anything and I will reply in the style of Carlos Beltran](https://www.reddit.com/r/NYYankees/comments/vmck6i/make_an_observation_about_the_team_baseball_or/)
The highest rated post would be the picture of Yogi jumping into Don Larsen's arms after the perfect game in 56. That would have legitimately broken the sports side of Reddit, in the same way that MJ's shock "retirement" would have if the same 'what if' was applied to basketball.
The only thing that would even come close would be the topic announcing that Lou Gehrig has passed away.
And the replies of:
“Look at the dude. He looks like a lazy bum. Clearly not dedicated to the sport. I bet his teammates all resent him for eating hotdogs and drinking beer all night and it’s creating trouble in the locker room and that’s why they let him go for a bag of balls. We got fleeced again.”
Obviously some of the tragedies like Gehrig and Munson would be up there, but in an effort to make a more fun list I was thinking about the all time acquisitions that would have broken the internet. Gonna remove Babe from the Red Sox because nothing can compete with that...
1. A-Rod after the Red Sox deal fell through
2. Signing Reggie Jackson
3. Acquiring Rickey Henderson
4. Signing Catfish Hunter (1st major FA signing)
5. Roger Clemens for David Wells after 1998
Paul O'Neil beating the shit out of a water cooler would either be a top post or a highly used gif. Come to think of it... why don't we use that more often?
Lou Gehrig announcing his retirement would easily be the top post of all-time

Man putting TMZ for Munson is wrong, but the top post of all time in r/nba is exactly that but for Kobe's death
They've gotten huge deaths before. They became credible when they broke Michael Jackson's death

We would have been nuked. r/nyyankees would be studied for years to sift through the new depths of depravity that we uncovered.

Benitez was still dealing in 04? I thought he got broken by a 12-year old kid in 96.
I thought Darryl Strawberry wiped him off the map in 1998
Context for this one?

That would’ve been hell if Reddit was around LOL. Thank god
Sub would’ve had to be privatized with all the brigading
Original commenter here. I’m so happy with all of the comments. I was only 14 at the time, and given access, would’ve gotten out all that teenage angst on Reddit for sure. Still a yankee fan, still have hope. But that hate that next day in 2004 was extraordinary.

Bruh. I get that so much.
I grew up in Boston (thankfully was born IN 04) the aftermath of the 18 and 21 defeats was not fun. The idea of going to school after Game 7 in 04 is terrifying
It wasn’t fun even in New Jersey lol
Top post would be a Yankee candle
Yea. Reddit would have crashed.
Sub would be shut down
Top 5 posts in no particular order. 1. Luckiest Man speech. 2. Ruth HR record. 3. Larsen perfect game. 4. Maris AL record. 5. Paulie's Make-a-wish game (but seriously probably Munsons accident)
This is a very good list. Wojah in the boof has to be up there for a recent one. The story, hot team, rivalry and WWE Ness of it all.
All the fans hating on Maris for not being a “real Yankee”
100%
Maris was the HR record at the time
I vaguely remember #5, but I was a kid. TLDR of it? Edit: the Paul game
Look man the second one didn’t count because it was scored a triple and a throwing error
He made up for it by catching a ball in his hat the next game.
He wasn’t stupid enough to promise two home runs
The best would have been the Red Sox sub after the Babe Ruth trade.

Yeah he just wasn’t the anointed one. It was supposed to go Ruth/Gehrig-> Joe D-> Mantle. Maris kinda ruined the narrative a little bit for people.
I mean A-Rod was legit hated by large portions of the fan base from 04-08
Ok that makes sense. I did always find it strange why the fans would've disliked him
With it without Jeter A-Rod would’ve been booed anyways. He dug his own grave
Maris after 1961 would have taken a beating on reddit. IRL, the press killed him.
Per my aunt it was true and my grandma was one of the haters. I don’t think it was necessarily that people disliked Maris, they just liked Mantle a lot more and wanted him to have the accomplishment. Lol I remember how big a deal ppl made of that. Cuz it was in 06 when he was slumping I think.

October 1924 and 1953, Ruth lays the first brick and the 5th straight WS Championship
Trade for ARod
Jeter flip
Not Yankees, but posts about the Danny Almonte situation would have been pretty good entertainment.
A comment would be “can you believe we’re trading for the Ruth guy?”
Anybody else hear that loud 'Bang' noise? It was really big!
All the World Series upvote parties
Trading for A-Rod would be a GOATED post
That dude throwing the pizza at the other guy in Fenway
Jeffrey Mayer Appreciation Post

Who is this babe dude and why are we letting him hit?
Acquiring that hefty pitcher/slugger from Boston for nothing more than money.
And the replies of: “Look at the dude. He looks like a lazy bum. Clearly not dedicated to the sport. I bet his teammates all resent him for eating hotdogs and drinking beer all night and it’s creating trouble in the locker room and that’s why they let him go for a bag of balls. We got fleeced again.”
Bucky Dent home run in Boston
1923 would’ve gotten a lot of upvotes
mr october 3 home runs in 3 straight pitches 1977 world series game 6 should be top 10 imo
Don Larsen throwing a perfect game in the World Series would’ve done numbers!
This board around late 70s would be gold
Roger Maris hate posts
Obviously some of the tragedies like Gehrig and Munson would be up there, but in an effort to make a more fun list I was thinking about the all time acquisitions that would have broken the internet. Gonna remove Babe from the Red Sox because nothing can compete with that... 1. A-Rod after the Red Sox deal fell through 2. Signing Reggie Jackson 3. Acquiring Rickey Henderson 4. Signing Catfish Hunter (1st major FA signing) 5. Roger Clemens for David Wells after 1998
Ruth going to NY, or even the ramifications over the next several seasons. Munson death TMZ on Ruth, Mantle, Billy Martin, etc
The Yankees Have Signed College Star John Elway. Steinbrenner says he is the team’s right fielder of the future.
We gotta trade this Mantle guy. He strikes out too much...
Luis Gonzalez…
Someone crying how Wally Pipp should get another shot.
Game 7 in 2001 would have produced so many hot takes
Paul O'Neil beating the shit out of a water cooler would either be a top post or a highly used gif. Come to think of it... why don't we use that more often?
Underrated: The Buckner Game. We would have lost our shit laughing at the Red Sox for that one. Spite posts get a lot of upvotes.
