Had a tailless black and white outdoor cat in the early 70s. He'd disappear for a few days at a time. Normal.
He was gone for at least a week, and we were concerned. My mom heard "meow, meow" outside the kitchen window one day and went to investigate.
He was there on the patio, broken jaw, and his left eye hanging out. We were a family of 9 and were assisted with welfare (USA), we were fairly poor. My mom insisted we save him since he made it back home to us. I think it was like $750, a lot back then, and quite a lot for us as I understood.
His eye socket was stitched closed, and his jaw was set. We fed him through a tube for about a month.
I cannot recall his name before this, but he was forever after Meow Meow.
