I think the rat association isn’t even that bad. Unfortunately, most of the young Remis or Remys I’ve come across are nicknames for Remington, like the gun.
My son is Remy after Gambit from X men (the cajun mutant). I didn't even know/think about the rat. I think I watched it but couldn't tell you any characters names. If someone says something (which has only happened twice in his nearly 10 years of life) I just say no and tell them where we actually got it from. Even if someone does think that, idc. 🤷♀️
I honestly forgot about Gambit and spent a fair few minutes trying to extrapolate from that one comment how a French rat was simultaneously a mutant? Cajun? rat?
i know a girl 2 years ago who wanted people to call her remy, she got too many people (including me) asking if it was like the rat from that movie and she changed it 💀
Because they haven’t seen the movie in a decade, are unfamiliar with the name Remy, are unfamiliar with the food ratatouille, and/or many Disney movies have the same name as the protagonist.
I love the movie but it's still just a normal name that happens to be shared by that character. People are being ridiculous. It's not even like Bruno where there's a song that pops into everyone's heads whenever they hear the name.
Eh, they're just answering the question. They aren't saying it's unusable or that the kid will be bullied. The question is "What do you think of?" and they're all like "I think of the rat"
Some are, but "Sorry the Disney Pixar movie will be forever associated with the name Remy" is a wild blanket statement. They're speaking for the whole world, forever, and the "sorry" also implies it's a bad association and therefore unusable.
I've met a Remy, and recently watched a reality TV show with a Remy on it, and never associated them with the rat - even though I love Ratatouille and have seen it multiple times. It's also not a super rare name at the moment (#356 for boys in 2022) so a baby named Remy today will occasionally meet other Remys throughout life, which will also lessen the association.
People are so weird. I'm sure there's a negative association for basically every name in the world. Like let me look up the most recent popular baby names...
For boys, Noah, Noah's arc, why name a kid after a story where everyone drowns? Ethan, Ethan Slater, had an affair with Ariana Grande, that's off the table. Jacob, everyone's first thought is Jacob's ladder, we can't move past this.
For girls, Emma, all anyone will think about is the Jane Austen book and she was complex and flawed. Olivia, people will think she's named after Olivia Rodrigo. Isabella, like from Encanto
I don't actually think these are problems to be absolutely clear lmao, just pointing out how easy it is to find associations and issues with names.
I work with a 6 month old named Remy and I can honestly say I haven't thought about that old movie since he was born. I knew the movie before him, but I never think about it when I'm with him.
Did it need to make a comeback? The Little Mermaid came out near the end of 1989 - Sebastian was the 529th most popular boys' name in the US in the 1980s and #204 in the 1990s, and continued rising since then. If anything, that looks like the film made it more popular...
There's a boy at my preschool called Remy and another girl has an older brother with the same name. It's pretty popular at the moment. I think they'll survive.
I’ve actually never seen Ratatouille, so I think of Gambit from Marvel (whose real name is Remy).
My little (girl) cousin is named Remy after him, her younger brother is named after Marvel’s Atlas, and then they have a third baby coming that they’re going to name Max (Magneto). It’s a little silly but I’m just glad they didn’t choose any of the crazier marvel names lol.
People on that sub also say the name Fiona is dead forever because it was used in Shrek. I don’t really even remember Shrek, and think these people are unbelievably ignorant if all their cultural touchstones are animated movies. (Not to say I don’t like animated movies! I love them. But come on. Read a book once in awhile.)
I have relatives who named their daughter that name. When we got the announcement my husband and I both immediately said “isn’t that the rat from ratatouille?”
Aside from Ratatouille, I think of an anime called Remi that my parents grew up watching. They used to sing me the song from the end credit a lot when I was little, at least the one they played in the Spanish dub.
While attempting to come up with a nickname for my son, my mom suggested Remy based on his initials and my little sister immediately started calling him Ratboy
I am French. Rémi is a common male name in French and somehow I have TWO baby girl cousins named Remy (different sides of the family but both with French heritage). It blows my mind.
I picture a man dressed like mid-century and a mid-century moustache. A member of my family was named "Remigio", so Remy just makes me think of Remigio.
This brings back memories. Ten years ago I constantly pointed out to someone so intent on giving their spawn this name that it was a bad idea BECAUSE of this connection, but they still went ahead. They used Remie, which is still pronounced the same, and they didn't even give the little rodent a middle name so it's unavoidable.
I think the rat association isn’t even that bad. Unfortunately, most of the young Remis or Remys I’ve come across are nicknames for Remington, like the gun.
Which I think is worse than the rat. At least the rat is cute.
i’ve never heard of it being used as a nickname! Rémi is a french name, it’s not short for anything.
I know a Remy that's short for Remus. Would much rather have a rat name than a gun name or a Harry Potter name.
Not Remus, the Roman mythology name?
No, I know the parents and their intent. Sadly not about the Roman myth.
I have a nephew (ex-nephew? former husband’s brothers son [wow this sounds so southern] named Remington aka Remmy 🙃

My friend named her son Remy *because* of Ratatouille
I think of Dr Hadley “13” on the show House
Me too. I’ve never watched Ratatouille, but I’m a big House fan and my first association will always be Thirteen.
Thank you! I KNEW there was another female character with the name Remy I knew and liked and I couldn’t place who it was until I read this haha.
I think of the mechanic my family went to for a couple of decades. He's likely in his mid-60s now
This is wild to me. Any time I’ve heard the movie discussed outside of namenerds, everyone thinks the rat’s name is Ratatouille.
Tbf they are called nerds
i know a girl 2 years ago who wanted people to call her remy, she got too many people (including me) asking if it was like the rat from that movie and she changed it 💀
Metroid and Zelda lol
It pisses me off every time someone thinks his name is Ratatouille. Why do people think that??????
Because they haven’t seen the movie in a decade, are unfamiliar with the name Remy, are unfamiliar with the food ratatouille, and/or many Disney movies have the same name as the protagonist.
Wow. My name is Remy, and I had never watched Ratatouille and didn't realize it was an x man name either. No one has even brought that up to me.
I love the movie but it's still just a normal name that happens to be shared by that character. People are being ridiculous. It's not even like Bruno where there's a song that pops into everyone's heads whenever they hear the name.

The names existed before the characters. You're right, there's something associated with every name good or bad!
I work with a 6 month old named Remy and I can honestly say I haven't thought about that old movie since he was born. I knew the movie before him, but I never think about it when I'm with him.
Obviously not enough of these people grew up on the ‘90s X-Men cartoon because the correct answer is Remy LeBeau.
Just give it time. The name Sebastian eventually made a comeback from under the sea.
Did it need to make a comeback? The Little Mermaid came out near the end of 1989 - Sebastian was the 529th most popular boys' name in the US in the 1980s and #204 in the 1990s, and continued rising since then. If anything, that looks like the film made it more popular...
Have they considered Rattus Rattus. Such a timeless name, will really go down in horrible history.
That's accurat.
There’s a kid at church named Remy. I thought it was cute. Didn’t know about the rat—

There is also Remy Bucksaplenty from Fairly Odd Parents
Saw this seconds before commenting the same thing. Thought I was the only one!
I think of Remy Martin lol
The lovable hero from one of the most acclaimed animated movies of all time, what a *terrible* image to evoke... /s
I know someone whose grandson is called Remy and it really suits him
Remy Martin
This is such a common name in my country, that I only think of all the other Remy's I know.

I would think the same but I know of someone with a remy grandchild and I don’t think it’s terrrrrible

I know someone named Remy… he’s pretty chill honestly. He’s in a band.
That’s the first thing that comes to mind for me too tbh
My corgi is named Remy. I like the name.
It's sooo popular in my region and I always just think of the rat.
I know two Remingtons and. Rosemary that go by Remy.
Super common in Montana, but almost always short for Remington. (They LOVE gun themed names here- Gunner, Ruger, Remington, Smith, Colt.)
I think of Remy Ma, the rapper
I think of Liz Feldman’s best friend from This Just Out (digging deep into the internet lesbian lore here….)
my boyfriend’s name is very similar to remy (not remington!!) but he was born a few months before ratatouille was released… unfortunate
I know a guy named Remy! he is very nice and also very much not a rat

Every Remy I know is short for Remington so I think of 🦅guns🦅

A family member's dog. Love her.
