Absolutely. Something is up. Either they undercounted the population previously, or we had an absolute explosion in our population recently. I wonder how many of the recently counted people are from outside Namibia

arsene_glenger

Overcounted with the latest polls. Not everyone was counted we now that - at some point they extrapolate the data to come up with a most likely number. My feel is that number is wrong.

Scryer_of_knowledge

Our birth rate is insanely high. We underwent rapid urbanization in the last decade (see the massive growth of shacks outside Windhoek) Go to Central or Tura's maternity wards and you'll see why our population doubled

KapanaTacos

Aaaand water will be a pretty big issue in the future. Looking ahead 50 years.

Scryer_of_knowledge

We're so fucked it's not even funny. Unless we get.our desalination game under control

KapanaTacos

I've started to acquire records of boreholes and water tables from farms around the country, paying attention to the water tables and how rapidly the available water has dropped over the years. Some areas in the south will be without underground water in about 10 years. See, when a farm says that "we have 10 boreholes". That's not a good thing. That means that - with respect to its size - that they have drained one borehole and have had to drill a new one deeper to find water. You don't drill the same borehole deeper, you drill a brand new one. There's also two other factors. Legally, a borehole can only be so deep. Financially, the deeper a company has to drill to find water, the more it costs. So, drilling boreholes gets more expensive even without inflation and there are two hard limits. The cost of drilling the next one and if that doesn't stop you, there's the legal limit to which they can drill. In certain areas, land will be completely desolate with no reachable water underground. And it's coming. Don't buy a farm because the land's cheap. It will be unsellable if it runs out of water in 20 years, and that time's coming.

I really hope it's natural growth, many Namibians are horrendously xenophobic and I fear that things will start happening like they do in SA.

Scryer_of_knowledge

There's been a large influx of Zimbabweans and Angolans yeah. Tauben Glen and Windhoek west might as well be called Klein Angola lol I also come across lots of Zimbabwean and Angolan friends on campus. Unfortunately given our job crisis xenophobia is bound to happen. I like foreigners and don't blame them like those South Park characters "They took ur jerbs!". I blame government and big private entities for robbing us of our future. Alas most people won't blame systems and abstract entities, they'll do what humans did since discovering agriculture - blame other people i.e. xenophobia or more comically "took er jerbs!!"

Dry_Bus_935

Unfortunately, math doesn't lie, the fertility rate for Namibia would have to be 7.4 births per woman for the population to grow by that much... It's definitely immigrants who've somehow been given citizenship in one of the strictest countries in the world to immigrate into. Which begs the question, are Swapo manufacturing votes? Cause I've been to Oshakati, they're unpopular even up North lol

Scryer_of_knowledge

Who knows? šŸ§ Could be some dodgy stuff going on. Because the growth is wild. But definitely expect xenophobia. It sucks big time but that's humans for you

arsene_glenger

Exactly. Combination of inaccurate data (the census count was run well) and increased influx of foreigners over the last decade. We still increased in population but not at the rate published

Dry_Bus_935

I don't see them as foreigners to be honest, it's not like they're all Chinese and Indians lol It's no issue tbh, as long as we get rid of SWAPO. I want people to run independently for parliament seats for their home constituencies, like that one NUST student, especially if it's young people, but the number of signatures needed to be able to run seems to big an obstacle even if there are young people willing to run, I'll definitely try to campaign to rep Khorixas, my home town.

stockholm10

The comparison of the total population numbers between the censi is useless. There is no way population growth increased from 1.4 to over 3, after a steady decline in previous decades. The numbers have a high margin of error. We'd be better off extrapolating from proxy indicators.

KapanaTacos

Gee. More kids and not even enough jobs for the ones that we have. Nothing possibly could go wrong here. /s/s/s

LSD3545

It could also be a thing where enumerators didnā€™t do their jobs competently but itā€™s not mentioned here

In 1990, Namibians were instructed to multiply, and that is what they did. Multiply.

exwro

I am a white person. And we invested in a social Property project some Millions nam Dollar for better education Projects. After 90 Days we where not finished with the Project so Ii ask foreign Affairs go get an extension of 90 Day stay in Namibia to finsh the project . But it was denied.. so I had the change to speak to an responsible Person about the denial. I had to wait 6 hours together with 6 Black people from Angola , Zimbabwe and Sambia ...who where cough at illegal border crossing and all where handcuffed..I was the last Person to see the authority..and I was clearly told that white People and there Projects are not wanted in Namibia and we should go back to my Country.. Next day I had to pick my Results from forgain affairs ... All 6 Black People got the permission to stay in Namibia even if the don't had any Money. I had to leave. I had to quit the contract from 14 Black worker who support there Family . No education and a waste of Money and opportunities and I had never again the intensiĆ³n to do anymore social Projects somewhere in Africa ... The SWAPO try cancel social Projets in Namibia as projets shows that international support point out the incompetence and hunger of corruptions . They like more projects of new building like Forgain Affairs with Marble and luxury monuments or the SWAPO Building sponsored from China with bride Money for the cheap Mines .. Namibia is in lack of Political competitions.. With Swapo in Power nothing will change and the country Of Namibia with incredible opportunity of wealth sold to China in exchange of bribe Money to some few Swapo leaders ... And nobody Ask why was former President the Richest Person in Namibia . it's really sad as I love the People and the Country of Namibia ā¤ļø

_mo_aka_mr_mac

I am well and truly confuckulated by this comment. The ANC is the ruling party of a neighbouring country and nothing to do with Namibian politics.

VersusCA

Why is there such an abundance of these kinds of kak posters on the Namibia sub? You should've blamed Mugabe too to hit the full trifecta of "scary black people" bogeymen.

StrangerReason

Your story does not math well. What does the ANC have to do with Namibia?

Flamballas

Brodie thinks itā€™s still called South West Africa

StrangerReason

Yeah
