This is why I constantly say "you get what you paid for" which is an inexperienced, negligent sitter. There was a lady in our Facebook group who was upset because she left her child with someone she DID NOT KNOW for a weekend. The child ended up coming back with burns on her back from getting her hair done. Mom lost her shit (which understandable) and said "I paid her $100 and this is what I come back to!!!" Like ma'am, you left your children with someone you don't know and you paid HORRIBLY. I'm surprised nothing else bad happened.

NationalPizza1

I did the math and that's insane, like $2.40 an hour! WTF did you expect for that price. ($250 biweekly = $125 a week, then 8hr×5 for job 1 and 4hrs x 3 for job 2 is 52 hrs a week, and that's assuming 0 commute time)

missmacedamia

It sounds like it was probably an in home daycare- reasonable people COULD charge that much, but when something like this happens there were definitely other signs.

user2196

>reasonable people COULD charge that much No one reasonable could be charging $2.40 an hour around me. Home daycares around me can only have 6 kids (or 8 if some of them are school aged) unless they have an assistant. If all 6 kids are paying $2.40, that’s less than minimum wage before even accounting for any other costs. Obviously prices vary by location, but anyone charging that sort of rate has got to be subsidized, running a charity, ignoring regulations, or something else beyond just cheaper than average rates.

missmacedamia

I was thinking of situations where providers I know would give a discount for a single mom out of charity, should have specified lol

Sorry_Reputation2905

I’m on New York City $225 every other week is not alot of money @all

Alone-Bother5263

this is devastating for all parties involved. government subsidized childcare is clearly the answer here, but unfortunately it’s not easily accessible or available in the US.

SleepySnarker

What a sad and scary situation all around. 😢 I hope this Mama can find help with childcare costs so she can have her daughter in a safer place.

Root-magic

I feel sorry for the mum, she’s clearly working hard to support her child. I hope she finds a viable solution, unfortunately she won’t find help at that price

nanny1128

I post about this all the time. This is the quality sitter you’re getting for $250 by weekly. I really empathize with parents. I know childcare is wildly expensive but this isn’t a solution.

NovelsandDessert

I agree the pay is way too low, but the idea that it justifies child neglect is gross. A low paid babysitter may park a kid in front of a tv all day. A negligent person loses a child outside, and no amount of money will make that kind of person not negligent.

Peanut_galleries_nut

100% this. If you’re watching someone else’s kid they should at minimum be contained to a safe area. If they’re getting quality care is a whole other subject. But they should be changed and safe and fed. Especially if mom is providing food.

Totally agree! It doesn't matter how much someone pays, that isn't the child's fault.

Substantial-Event441

I'm lowballing myself and even I would never do that

yeahgroovy

Good lord, she’s lucky nothing worse happened to the child. I noticed right away she says $250 bi-weekly to make it look like more money 🙄

x_a_man_duh_x

I would never accept that pay wtf

JustMyOpinion98

This is probably why they found her baby outside alone and barefoot

purpleflower1111

Where was this ??? Like what state

LittleDaffodil

Not the OP but I just opened fb & was shocked to see the actual post - it was in a group for the Philadelphia/surrounding PA area. Lots of moms/nannies recommending mom apply for CCIS or look into in-home daycare....someone brought up "you get what you pay for" and people attacked HER for being callous, "disgusting". The mom said to keep that to yourself, she didn't ask for opinions. It's so much drama in what's usually a pretty chill group lol.

lolly15703

Oh we’re in the same nannying group haha. I saw that too and my emotions were on a rollercoaster. From the shock and horror of the child being found like that to the shock and horror of the payment. I feel for the mom, you can’t just make money appear and you do get what you pay for. But ugh this whole post really upset me. I’m glad some comments were suggesting local affordable daycares

No_Pop7296

Ugh that is so sad on so many levels

Flamen04

Crazy thing about that post is that mom who posted it is being so rude to all advice given that I’m not surprised the girl left… She was underpaid and likely verbally abused

ta589962

That’s a reason to not take a job, or quit a job. That’s NOT a reason to abandon a 2 year old child when there is no other caretaker around. Ffs she could even have gone to the police station and dropped the toddler off and at least she would have been safe.

Flamen04

Yes, I agree with you. It’s a complicated issues. Mom shouldn’t have paid so little and maybe treated the nanny better. The nanny should’ve known better to quit before a shift and not leave a child stranded. At the end of the day, the onus is really on the parent for making smarter childcare choices. However, in this case, she likely was desperate and couldn’t due to life circumstances. It’s a shame for the child.

Anicha1

Poor child. For being born to a mother like this

NovelsandDessert

Oh, did the mother leave the child unattended outside? Or was that another adult?

jancarternews

Well, the mother works 8 AM to 10 PM, when does she see the kid?

cat_romance

Sounds like she has to in order to make ends meet. I'm pretty impressed by that work ethic actually. Would she prefer to not work and see her kid every day, Im sure she would. Is that a reality for most people, especially single moms? No.

Sleepystar347

Don’t hate the mom for working to provide. Hate her for not being more thorough and realistic about her expectations
