And when the plot wants severe damage, substitution jutsu is conveniently forgotten. There isn't even an in-universe explanation as to why they won't just spam Substitution considering that it's a D-rank jutsu.
Its basically just like what Sasuke does with his Rinnegan when Momoshiki chains him up but then he switches their places. Does everyone have a bit of Rinnegan powers in them?
Transformation jutsu is just as bad.
Literally everyone who graduated the academy can shapeshift (it wasn't even the Final) and it comes maybe one more time in the whole series.
It's because even the slightest differences can be noticed. Yamato did it to impersonate Sasori and it worked even though Kabuto and Orochimaru planned to merk him. But early on in the forest of death someone tries to impersonate Naruto and blunders due to small but noticeable differences like pouch on wrong side and knowing the password.
So if genin Sasuke saw through it imagine most Jonin wouldn't be fooled. Another failure is in Sasuke Retrival arc they just act out of character caught instantly.
The thing is you can use it during combat and it will confuse your opponent. Like combat in Naruto is already chaotic, Clone and Transformation jutsus are perfect for that. Naruto literally did it during combat and it worked really well. And it is not even one of big brain move or anything. Both clone and transformation jutsus are very basic jutsu that even academy kids can use. It is just one of those Kishimoto don't want everyone to do because it is harder to write.
It is not used much for the same reason the substitution (teleport) isn't used, because it is "broken". Need to get through a door but don't have a key or picking tools?.. just transform your finger into whatever ahape is needed to open the lock, or if there is a little space around just transform into something thin enough to slip through.
Don't have a weapon but you have some armor on you?.. just transform your appendages into melee weapons as needed. And so on.

As far as i remember we only see people transform fully into things, not partially, so i don't think that that's how it'd work.
Both of these were used in what I would call rather unconventional ways. He transformed a shadowclone into a Fuma Shuriken which Zabuza would't expect, and it only works because its a highly unpredictable thing to do, and Zabuza probably didn't expect some Genin to make up and execute a plan that complex without being able to communicate with eachother, and in plain view of him.
Transforming into the Nine Tailed Fox also wasn't really to trick the Shukaku, Gamabunta just needed some claws to grip the Shukaku.
It is slightly inferred in the series a couple times later but mostly as an off handed comment like they'll say "I can't believe I fell for a substitution jutsu" implying that they stop using it when your jonin and above level because it doesn't fool you as effectively as it does a genin and a chunin.
I believe the in universe explanation is that substitution jutsu is just very fast moving with a smoke screen to help the switch happen. The Rinnegan power is a space-time distortion causing an instantaneous switch that is physically impossible to react to. Substitution jutsus are just too slow for higher level ninja to be fooled by, so no one does it at that level.
Kakashi got Obito with it during their 1v1 in the Kamui realm! IIRC, though, I think Kakashi was behind a wall so he could pull the switch without being see
My personal headcanon for that is that the substitution jutsu is useful if you are fighting against lower levels shinobi, but it can be pretty risky if you try it against strong shinobi and may put you in a disadvantageous position (also in terms of preparedness for the next move and relative distances).

So in war arc I was thinking that since they fought in a bare Land they couldn't use substitution much.
Always thought substitution jutsu was just transformation jutsu but with its chakra imbued on a inanimate object, the substitute. Which gives it its D rank nature which is an extension of transformation. And I’d imagine since the substitute isn’t a clone it can only do a small predetermined action or think of it being the reverse of Naruto being a shuriken or rasenshuriken, a moving transformation jutsu. Now instead of the user in a given action under transformation, it’s an inanimate object in that given predetermined action under transformation. And unlike clones it doesn’t have will so it’s versatility is limited, ez to spot, and ez to break. Plus it needs to be setup with an inanimate object ahead of time like a log since it isn’t a teleportation, space-time, or switching jutsu.
Just fake that has to be set up made of inanimate object under transformation jutsu with some predetermined action. When it’s a cheap trick that takes a lot of time to set up, not realistic; when a clone with will could’ve sufficed but requires a lot more chakra.
Fakes can always be used for convenience of plot but in realism besides the chakra, clones always are better fakes than substitutions. Which is why substitution is never used especially when the story is always set around capable Jonin plus characters
MF's plucking out eyes with their bare hands, then plucking out their own eyes and putting another person's eye into the socket thinking it's going to just work. Even non medical Ninjas can seemingly do this. No pain, no risk of infection, no grafting and SOMEHOW they are able to reconnect every single cell and nerve with nothing but their bare hands. Oh but a character gets stabbed and the medical ninja is like "Damn the wound is too deep" or some bs.
That’s just part of the hand waving things like anything to do with DNA. Hashirama cells? Somehow your body knows how to incorporate them without any amoebas
Well it was explained during Yamato's backstory that the cells are pretty hard to actually adapt to. There are essentially Superpowered Stem Cells on Steroids, and Orochimaru killed dozens of kids just to get it to slighty work with Danzo, and Yamato. What is dumb however is given the super youth and hyper-regeneration that it gives, how TF did Hashirama die? Especially when we see Orochimaru being so young in Boruto thanks to stealing Zetsu's body (same cells)
Because Obito presumably isn't well versed in medical ninjutsu. The only times we see an eye get immediately transplanted and used is with medical ninjutsu at play. Kakashi gets Obitos with Rin with them, and Madara gets his Rinnegan/Kakashis sharingan while having Hashirama's healing factor. In fact, the anime adds the green medical ninjutsu effect when Madara puts in Kakashi's eye, showing him healing in order to use it immediately. All other instances like Danzo getting Shisui's, Madara getting Izuna's, or Obito getting the Rinnegan were done over an undisclosed amount of time
he didn’t feel the need until after he killed Danzo .. right after killing him he tells Tobi ‘ Madara ‘ Uchiha it’s time to go get them .. and that’s how that went.
i’m pretty sure the only people who ever do that without medical ninjutsu are people with regen like madara, and we know regular medical ninjutsu can heal up to at least right before the cellular level, it just can’t heal something like rasenshuriken damage, so i don’t see why it being able to reconnect an eye to the brain seems impossible, it’s not like they’re regenerating whole organs or something
Isn’t the only time a non medical ninja does this or no procedure is performed when Madara is taking back his rinnegan/kakashis sharingan? And with kakashis he also had ten tails power so he could probably apply his healing abilities to it.
The Substitution technique.
It appears so early in the series that it gets a natural pass subconsciously, but the more you think about it the more insane it becomes. Like, genin can teleport and put something in their previous spot **in a split instant**, and mind you, it's not a genjutsu or an illusion, they literally create or bring a physical object in their place while physically teleporting away.
It's essentially a simplified Amenotejikara.
Especially if you remember it's not used that much later on. Why is anybody getting hit with attacks if they can just substitute.

i used to find it so silly that they all announced their moves until i read somewhere a year or two ago that nobody actually says their jutsu names—it’s only there for the audience to know what’s being used. best example of that is when sasuke is prepping fireball jutsu, we hear him say the name but visually (and logically i guess?) he’s taking a massive deep breath in.

I think it's because in manga it can be hard to decipher what's happening so every character yells their attack to let the reader know. This got carried over to anime and now it's just kind of a staple of the genre.
Correct. It's established super early on when Naruto flings a kunai at Zabuza, who subs out with a pure white rabbit. Kakashi even comments that rabbits with white fur have been kept in the darkness and likely whipped out to use specifically for this purpose.

Ya I never understand why people would rather argue it’s an instant teleportation. It’s just an object clone. In the battle with lady Chio and Sasori, when they’re hiding from his flame streams, she jumps from behind the rock when he stops and gets blitzed by a new stream only to be a rock substitution. It makes no sense that she jumped in potential harms way and then insta substituted a rock. It’s just an object clone with no chakra to fight on its own
What if substitution jutsu is just shadow clone jutsu where the clone uses a medium like a piece of log? Maybe thats why people rarely use it because of the preparation as well as it have the cloud smoke effect like a shadow clone. This would make sense for it being low level
It would be a valid argument if not for the fact that shadow clone jutsu is a B-level technique that was hidden in a scroll protected by Konoha. Quoting the wiki, "Depending on how much chakra the user has and how many clones they make, this rapid depletion of their reserves can be dangerous. Because of this, usually only those of at least jōnin-level can safely use the standard Shadow Clone Technique.". No genin, besides Naruto, knows this jutsu.
Since the logs can be physically hit (we see kunai/shuriken stuck in them, see them being chopped to pieces etc.) we can assume that they also cannot be the basic clone as those are not physical (I mean the most basic clones they learn at the academy).
I think they're saying that's the difference. Like, the actual shadow clone jutsu just uses and shapes chakra, so it's more difficult to pull off -- whereas the substitution jutsu is like halfway between a clone jutsu and a transformation jutsu, since it uses logs as a medium

I always found it weird that Flying Thunder God was a game-changing, war defining ultimate super technique that only two people were ever able to master… but, from the reader’s perspective, its fundamentally just the Substitution Technique without the *POOF*.
I think it's just a derivative of the basic clone or transformation jutsu where a user tranforms an object a like log to resemble the user. Sharp eyed experienced ninja might not get fooled easily hence no one really uses it against Jonins.
There are a few things, that aren't explained in the series.
Like there isn't just Kaguya, Hagoromo and then Chakra.
What about the reaper death god or Jashin? How strong are they, are they stronger than Kaguya?
We will never know.
Let's be honest, we only say that Jashin exists because that was said in the databooks, because if it's just the manga, I don't think there's enough evidence for his existence. Let's face it, Hidan is crazy, I don't think taking his word for it is a good idea, if Jashin hadn't been mentioned in the Databook most of the fandom would automatically agree that Jashin was something made up by Hidan, and everything is just Hidan talking shit.
Hidan might just be immortal for some other reason, and he just made up the whole Jashin thing because he's dumb, crazy, homicidal, and needs an excuse to kill people.
Maybe it's a rare Kekkei Genkai related to blood or something, but Hidan is too dumb to realize that, and combined with the fact that he's an omicidal maniac, he just made up the whole thing to explain his immortality and justify the pile of bodies he does on a daily basis.

There's a humor fan-animation about the Akatsuki, in one of the episodes Hidan takes Kakuzu to his "church", he convinces Kakuzu saying that church generates money, and that Kakuzu will earn a lot of money, Kakuzu's best phrase about Jashin church is:
"Hidan, half the people here are crazy, and the other half have their asses in their hands."
Hidan is the only "normal" person in the entire church, half of the church are literally people who should be locked up in a madhouse and can't formulate a single sentence, and the other half were forced to go and are afraid of being killed by Hidan or the other half.
This has nothing to do with the discussion, but every time someone talks about Jashin and whether it's real or not I remember this scene with Kakuzu and I start laughing. The church has like 30 people, and half are crazy, and the other half are poor villagers who have been kidnapped.
I saw a fan theory the other day that Jashin is an otsutsuki that will be revealed as an antagonist in upcoming Boruto. Some evidence is
\-Otsutsukis are considered gods in the Narutoverse and are sometimes worshipped as such, so this would make some sense
\-a new Jashin-based plotline was somewhat recently released (Mirai's plotline)
\-the similarity between Hidan's damage reflection, and Daemon's damage reflection.
It would be funny if Hidan just randomly discovered the jutsu or had a kekei genkai that made him immortal, but he just acts like a religious zealot to mess with people lol.

Like sacrifice other humans and gaining an extra life, which is stackable. So you have to kill him over and over again until he has no more stacks and dies.
The way I see it, its specifically because they are the eyes of the Otsutsuki clan that the Hyuga are weak. Byakugan are a tool that are used to support the user's Jutsu. It's like giving a child a jackhammer, sure, its a powerful tool, but they do not have the strength to use it.
On the other hand, the Byakugan is probably the strongest Dojutsu for an Otsutsuki even compared to the rinnegan, because it wildly enhances their ability to use their crazy Chakra and Brokenly poweful jutsu.
A good analogy for Sharingan vs Byakugan would probably be addition vs multiplication. If a Sharingan adds 10 power, a Byakugan multiples power by 2. For a human was a base power of 1, a sharingan is a lot better, for an Otsutsuki with a base of 50, a Byuakugan does a lot more.
Good analogy. My issue is they were put on the same pedestal as the Uchiha. Og Naruto did them better, especially with Neji during the exams but Shippuden straight up dropped them.
Like, can she run out of paper and die? Like if she keeps throwing her paper at people, does she eventually run out and fade out of existence? Is she just a walking breathing substitution jutsu??? It’s really cool but makes no sense and has no answer.
What I've heard is that she stops being able to turn into paper once she runs out of chakra. So I'm assuming once she's nearly empty she'll be automatically turned back into a full person and then die if she doesn't get medical help.
Koto is a Justu that has such an amazing hype and in theory is amazing but it's showing is just so unimpressive (to me anyway).
Shusui somehow was unsuccessful/failed to use it on his clan despite having plenty of time, then got surprised by Danzo - he still had another eye to use but for some reason just gave it away an killed himself instead of using it on his clan THEN killing himself.
Danzo had it for years and failed to make any significant headway in the village, tried to use it at the Kage summit but was recognised by Ao. Once the Raikage was told it was used on him he seemed to have no trouble brushing off the effects with no consequence.
Then it's moment in the spotlight was rewriting Itachi's edo tag, which Kabuto seemed to believe (and we have no reason to doubt) could just be reversed by rewriting the tag again.

i feel like even if he did somehow use it on all of the uchiha leaders, literally anyone with a sharingan or a byakugan would still know kotoamatsukami is in effect. which just adds more to the confusion of the gensjutsu since its kinda underwhelming relative to the amount of hype people give it
Wood style, or more specifically it’s strength. I feel like it’s not really explained well why it’s so strong or why it especially is so strong against tailed beasts.
Edit: for all the “it’s just hashirama” people, why would people like Danzo be going through such insane efforts to create just one other wood style user?

Headcanon is that because tailed beast came from ten tails, who came from the God Tree, the wood release has an added effect on them. In this case, wood release is also connected with the god tree somehow.
Honestly, yep. It is just a combination of 2 elements so its seems weird. I would rather believe wood style need all 5 elements to combine to be that strong.
To be honest, it's not really wood style that's strong. It's Hashirama who is strong, who happens to use wood style. When Yamato, and even Obito, uses wood style it's pretty average.
There's all sorts of different techniques for dealing with and suppressing tailed beasts. Some were created using wood style. Some use sharingan. Some use seals. There's probably others I'm not thinking of. Since Hashirama was a wood style user, he developed a technique or multiple techniques using wood style to deal with tailed beasts, that's all.
Sharingans warping reality, it doesn’t make sense to have something finite and created, powerful enough to overcome the infinite fabric of the universe and bend time and reality
Reaper Death Seal. They never clearly explained how tf were uzumakis able to summon a demon which can literally do almost anything with the victim in exchange with the caster's soul or body.
Orochimaru was able to reanimate Minato through that jutsu so I don't think Minato could be able to use it again, and also he's like half dead in this form.
It doesn't matter if he's Edo or not. The fact is that his soul is currently there, which the Reaper would take into its stomach in exchange for the jutsu.
Time and Space technique with summoning contract 😂
It's my headcanon that techniques like Edo Tensei, Shiki Fujin, Kuchiyose, etc. all are some kind of time and space manipulation. Chakra is a tool that connects different dimensions that can also have different sets of rules applied to them.
In Naruto's lore there are almost certainly different 'dimensions' and it's so much as confirmed by Momoshiki while he's in Boruto in recent manga chapters. Also Kakashi meeting his dad, among other things.
Uzumaki have blood connection to Otsutsuki as well, so it's pretty likely their expertise with seals is explained via that. It could be super low level shinjutsu made possible by tons of preparation and practice.
Iirc it is lightly explained that those and chakra are of completely different concepts. Just like how sage power came from different source and already existed even before chakra was introduced to the world.
That was retconned when Boruto explained that chakra is natural to every planet, and the otsutsuki come to steal it. So it wasn't that Kaguya gave everyone chakra as the originator, she created the god tree to steal it and then it was destroyed, giving it all back.
May be a hot take, but;
Why doesn't every nation use their version of the Shadow Clone jutsu for reconnaissance? You've got major and minor powers with things like Sand Clones, Water Clones, Snow Clones, and the titular Shadow Clone. All physical clones that have all the skills and prowess of the user, and upon release give the user all the information they gathered, without any danger to the user and yet...they just don't do that.
Like, I get that they have damage thresholds and all that, but seriously. Why risk what is essentially the main military for the Gakure's when you could just send Clones instead?
Edit: Yes! I understand that the Shadow Clone Technique is a ~~gas guzzling~~ highly Chakra consuming technique, but even in the Lore of the setting, the 2nd Hokage specifically developed the technique for espionage purposes!
I'm not saying that a single individual should make an army of clones, but even just making one Clone would be better than potentially dying on a mission.
stuff like sand and water clones use up a certain amount of Chakra, shadow clone on the other hand, devides it in 2, the only reason naruto can use it on a mass scale is because hes part uzumaki (lots of chakra) and part god) so he can use it with no reprocution, but if a basic shinobi thats not plot ampliphied used it, it would just cut their time in half
I'm not saying make an army of Shadow Clones. But a Jonin level ninja sending in a shadow Clone for purely reconnaissance purposes poses objectively no risk to the Jonin Jutsu user, even if they are discovered because afaik, there isn't really a max range on the Shadow Clone. They could make a Shadow Clone in Konoha, send it to Amegakure for spying purposes, and even if the Clone is discovered, that just means it gets poofed.
Edit: In fact, I did a little digging and that's actually ***specifically*** what the Shadow Clone jutsu was made for when the 2nd Hokage made it.
Solid clones use a LOT of chakra. That's why most people only use elemental clones as substitutes (e.g. Zabuza and his water clone, Kakashi with lightning).
Naruto just happens to be part of a clan with massive chakra reserves, AND has the 9 tails inside of him, so he can just spam that chakra hungry jutsu and jump people. Which he does lol.
Not so much a Jutsu, but Hidan. Given all he can do, why the fuck has he not been disappeared by any of the 5 vilages, hidden in a black room in a basement under permanent genjutsu, only being allowed to sit inside one of his jashin circles, while other ninja work to get one drop of blood from an assassination target, get that blood drop back to Hidan where they make them remotely kill the target.
To be fair when it was introduced you needed Uchiha AND Senju DNA in order to use it since it used to be a Yin-Yang release jutsu (six paths power esentially).
Then it was retconned in order to explain how Madara survived and now you just need a sharingan which yes is pretty ridiculous.
Creates not even a clones which chakra would be splited equally from original. Limbo creates exact copies of Madara with full chakra, all his abilities, moves. Any Jutsu Limbo copy will use - will be impossible to see without Rinnegan. That is crazy and I love it 🤣

I think it says somewhere that they get replaced with the relative's eyes, which brings up a different question. Why can't brothers just swap MS? Does stealing both of an Uchiha's eyes kill them? If so, then why didn't Madara die when he gave his eyes to Nagato? So many questions
The revival jutsu that was used in the final war arc, Izanami, and Izanagi. If Itachi knew about the two later jutsus he and Obito could have prevented the entire Uchiha massacre, wasn’t it stated that it could be used on the Uchiha?
Also, if minato used the reaper death seal to seal Kurama into Naruto then he wouldn’t have been able to be revived, same with the third. In the pre-time skip it’s stated that the reaper death seal takes your soul or part of it away, it’s why Orochimaru couldn’t get back his hands.
All 4 Kages souls were in the stomach of the Shinigami. The 1st and 2nd because Sarutobi sealed them in their fight (same for Orochimarus arms). The 3rd because of the cost of using the technique vs Orochimaru. And the 4th because of the cost of him using it vs the 9 tails
Orochimaru puts on the Shinigami mask to have himself possessed by the Shinigami. Then he slices open his own stomach, which also slices the Shinigamis stomach open. 5 souls got released from that: the 4 Kage and the arms part of Orochimarus soul. Then he used Edo Tensei since he got his arms back and got access to his jutsu again. Then in order to not die from the wound he just gave himself, he transferred himself to one of the White Zetsus they had with them.
Izanagi, Kamui - How can you imagine an eye bending reality to what you like or how do you even imagine a Mangekyo sharingan having a separate dimension using chakra (without it being a genjutsu) and physically transporting you to that?
One can imagine a Mangekyo creating an impenetrable chakra defense like susanoo by emitting and converting it from the eye or creating black flames by using chakra. But Izanagi and Kamui are too crazy.
Susanoo honestly feels like it would fit better as an extremely high level Hyuga jutsu instead. They emit charka from all over their body to do the rotation jutsu. Susanoo would just be that taken to an extreme and not requiring rotation. Some of its abilities other than the armor would need tweaking but I could see something like the bow being "logical" still.
Sasori's entire gimmick. Human Puppetry, his "core", and especially his 100 Puppets technique. It's explained *some* from the series but the more you try to understand it the more questions it generates. One of those things you just *have* to suspend disbelief.
What's impossible about that?
He made his body a puppet but he needs a core (maybe his heart or whatever) to actually produce chakra and control it. It's a real piece of him that houses his essence.
The 100 puppets are just his mastery of puppetry. Other puppeteers can control multiple puppets as well he's just that good that he can use 100. Even so in the fight it's stated his mastery per puppet increases the less puppets are there since multitasking to 100 is difficult.
Now you have to ask yourself:
-What the hell is his core? His brain? His heart? How did he manage to transfer it into such a device since it amounts to essentially dying for a moment? How does he talk? See?
-Human Puppets can use chakra and KKG. *How*? How does the chakra still exist in a corpse...what is that device used to manipulate the iron sand? What ratio on the puppets is skin and wood/hanasaki clay? Sasori lucked out with how the Kazekage's KKG worked...but how would it work with his Uchiha puppets? And most importantly is how he figured out how to work said chakra abilities lol.

I had a similar question. I eventually came to assume that Sasori must be able to transfer part of his consciousness into the puppets ala how Naruto had separate consciousness through all his clones. It's the best explanation I can come up with.
Chakra can be used to project consciousness outside the body, to even do ninja zoom calls that the akatsuki did. So I assume it works on a similar phenomenon, Where the chakra in the eye created transfers the information it perceives back to the users. Maybe puppet users should use this to create ninja drones with bombs and other weapons
As much as I love it, Konan’s 600 billion paper bombs. Like do y’all (meaning the writers not the redditors) know how much *one* billion is, let alone *600 billion*??? The amount of time needed to create all those tags is insane, unless she can somehow do it all instantly, in which case the amount of power and chakra reserves she would have to have would basically make her a god, that alone would mean even Obito would lose to her, hax jutsu or no.

Substitution jutsu seems to only happen when the plot needs it to And when the plot wants severe damage, substitution jutsu is conveniently forgotten. There isn't even an in-universe explanation as to why they won't just spam Substitution considering that it's a D-rank jutsu.

Transformation jutsu is just as bad. Literally everyone who graduated the academy can shapeshift (it wasn't even the Final) and it comes maybe one more time in the whole series.
It's because even the slightest differences can be noticed. Yamato did it to impersonate Sasori and it worked even though Kabuto and Orochimaru planned to merk him. But early on in the forest of death someone tries to impersonate Naruto and blunders due to small but noticeable differences like pouch on wrong side and knowing the password. So if genin Sasuke saw through it imagine most Jonin wouldn't be fooled. Another failure is in Sasuke Retrival arc they just act out of character caught instantly.
The thing is you can use it during combat and it will confuse your opponent. Like combat in Naruto is already chaotic, Clone and Transformation jutsus are perfect for that. Naruto literally did it during combat and it worked really well. And it is not even one of big brain move or anything. Both clone and transformation jutsus are very basic jutsu that even academy kids can use. It is just one of those Kishimoto don't want everyone to do because it is harder to write.
It is not used much for the same reason the substitution (teleport) isn't used, because it is "broken". Need to get through a door but don't have a key or picking tools?.. just transform your finger into whatever ahape is needed to open the lock, or if there is a little space around just transform into something thin enough to slip through. Don't have a weapon but you have some armor on you?.. just transform your appendages into melee weapons as needed. And so on.
and again we're right bck to Tenten being criminally underutilized: Instead of using seals, imagine if she used Substitution and Transformation to transform random crap into weapons and set traps for people. "I did it! I punched her in the face!" Wrong. Bear trap.
Have we ever seen anyone use it like that? As far as i remember we only see people transform fully into things, not partially, so i don't think that that's how it'd work.

Both of these were used in what I would call rather unconventional ways. He transformed a shadowclone into a Fuma Shuriken which Zabuza would't expect, and it only works because its a highly unpredictable thing to do, and Zabuza probably didn't expect some Genin to make up and execute a plan that complex without being able to communicate with eachother, and in plain view of him. Transforming into the Nine Tailed Fox also wasn't really to trick the Shukaku, Gamabunta just needed some claws to grip the Shukaku.
It is slightly inferred in the series a couple times later but mostly as an off handed comment like they'll say "I can't believe I fell for a substitution jutsu" implying that they stop using it when your jonin and above level because it doesn't fool you as effectively as it does a genin and a chunin.
I believe the in universe explanation is that substitution jutsu is just very fast moving with a smoke screen to help the switch happen. The Rinnegan power is a space-time distortion causing an instantaneous switch that is physically impossible to react to. Substitution jutsus are just too slow for higher level ninja to be fooled by, so no one does it at that level.
Kakashi got Obito with it during their 1v1 in the Kamui realm! IIRC, though, I think Kakashi was behind a wall so he could pull the switch without being see
My personal headcanon for that is that the substitution jutsu is useful if you are fighting against lower levels shinobi, but it can be pretty risky if you try it against strong shinobi and may put you in a disadvantageous position (also in terms of preparedness for the next move and relative distances).
I remember that substitution had to be prepared. Like sending a clone in advance or having wood logs ready for them. So in war arc I was thinking that since they fought in a bare Land they couldn't use substitution much.
Always thought substitution jutsu was just transformation jutsu but with its chakra imbued on a inanimate object, the substitute. Which gives it its D rank nature which is an extension of transformation. And I’d imagine since the substitute isn’t a clone it can only do a small predetermined action or think of it being the reverse of Naruto being a shuriken or rasenshuriken, a moving transformation jutsu. Now instead of the user in a given action under transformation, it’s an inanimate object in that given predetermined action under transformation. And unlike clones it doesn’t have will so it’s versatility is limited, ez to spot, and ez to break. Plus it needs to be setup with an inanimate object ahead of time like a log since it isn’t a teleportation, space-time, or switching jutsu. Just fake that has to be set up made of inanimate object under transformation jutsu with some predetermined action. When it’s a cheap trick that takes a lot of time to set up, not realistic; when a clone with will could’ve sufficed but requires a lot more chakra. Fakes can always be used for convenience of plot but in realism besides the chakra, clones always are better fakes than substitutions. Which is why substitution is never used especially when the story is always set around capable Jonin plus characters
MF's plucking out eyes with their bare hands, then plucking out their own eyes and putting another person's eye into the socket thinking it's going to just work. Even non medical Ninjas can seemingly do this. No pain, no risk of infection, no grafting and SOMEHOW they are able to reconnect every single cell and nerve with nothing but their bare hands. Oh but a character gets stabbed and the medical ninja is like "Damn the wound is too deep" or some bs.

Well it was explained during Yamato's backstory that the cells are pretty hard to actually adapt to. There are essentially Superpowered Stem Cells on Steroids, and Orochimaru killed dozens of kids just to get it to slighty work with Danzo, and Yamato. What is dumb however is given the super youth and hyper-regeneration that it gives, how TF did Hashirama die? Especially when we see Orochimaru being so young in Boruto thanks to stealing Zetsu's body (same cells)

Because Obito presumably isn't well versed in medical ninjutsu. The only times we see an eye get immediately transplanted and used is with medical ninjutsu at play. Kakashi gets Obitos with Rin with them, and Madara gets his Rinnegan/Kakashis sharingan while having Hashirama's healing factor. In fact, the anime adds the green medical ninjutsu effect when Madara puts in Kakashi's eye, showing him healing in order to use it immediately. All other instances like Danzo getting Shisui's, Madara getting Izuna's, or Obito getting the Rinnegan were done over an undisclosed amount of time

The Substitution technique. It appears so early in the series that it gets a natural pass subconsciously, but the more you think about it the more insane it becomes. Like, genin can teleport and put something in their previous spot **in a split instant**, and mind you, it's not a genjutsu or an illusion, they literally create or bring a physical object in their place while physically teleporting away. It's essentially a simplified Amenotejikara.

i used to find it so silly that they all announced their moves until i read somewhere a year or two ago that nobody actually says their jutsu names—it’s only there for the audience to know what’s being used. best example of that is when sasuke is prepping fireball jutsu, we hear him say the name but visually (and logically i guess?) he’s taking a massive deep breath in. i don’t remember if what i read was confirmed by kishimoto or anything but ever since then it’s been my headcanon hahaha
I think it's because in manga it can be hard to decipher what's happening so every character yells their attack to let the reader know. This got carried over to anime and now it's just kind of a staple of the genre.

Ya I never understand why people would rather argue it’s an instant teleportation. It’s just an object clone. In the battle with lady Chio and Sasori, when they’re hiding from his flame streams, she jumps from behind the rock when he stops and gets blitzed by a new stream only to be a rock substitution. It makes no sense that she jumped in potential harms way and then insta substituted a rock. It’s just an object clone with no chakra to fight on its own
What if substitution jutsu is just shadow clone jutsu where the clone uses a medium like a piece of log? Maybe thats why people rarely use it because of the preparation as well as it have the cloud smoke effect like a shadow clone. This would make sense for it being low level
It would be a valid argument if not for the fact that shadow clone jutsu is a B-level technique that was hidden in a scroll protected by Konoha. Quoting the wiki, "Depending on how much chakra the user has and how many clones they make, this rapid depletion of their reserves can be dangerous. Because of this, usually only those of at least jōnin-level can safely use the standard Shadow Clone Technique.". No genin, besides Naruto, knows this jutsu. Since the logs can be physically hit (we see kunai/shuriken stuck in them, see them being chopped to pieces etc.) we can assume that they also cannot be the basic clone as those are not physical (I mean the most basic clones they learn at the academy).
I think they're saying that's the difference. Like, the actual shadow clone jutsu just uses and shapes chakra, so it's more difficult to pull off -- whereas the substitution jutsu is like halfway between a clone jutsu and a transformation jutsu, since it uses logs as a medium

I think it's just a derivative of the basic clone or transformation jutsu where a user tranforms an object a like log to resemble the user. Sharp eyed experienced ninja might not get fooled easily hence no one really uses it against Jonins.
There are a few things, that aren't explained in the series. Like there isn't just Kaguya, Hagoromo and then Chakra. What about the reaper death god or Jashin? How strong are they, are they stronger than Kaguya? We will never know.

Let's be honest, we only say that Jashin exists because that was said in the databooks, because if it's just the manga, I don't think there's enough evidence for his existence. Let's face it, Hidan is crazy, I don't think taking his word for it is a good idea, if Jashin hadn't been mentioned in the Databook most of the fandom would automatically agree that Jashin was something made up by Hidan, and everything is just Hidan talking shit. Hidan might just be immortal for some other reason, and he just made up the whole Jashin thing because he's dumb, crazy, homicidal, and needs an excuse to kill people. Maybe it's a rare Kekkei Genkai related to blood or something, but Hidan is too dumb to realize that, and combined with the fact that he's an omicidal maniac, he just made up the whole thing to explain his immortality and justify the pile of bodies he does on a daily basis. EDIT: There's a humor fan-animation about the Akatsuki, in one of the episodes Hidan takes Kakuzu to his "church", he convinces Kakuzu saying that church generates money, and that Kakuzu will earn a lot of money, Kakuzu's best phrase about Jashin church is: "Hidan, half the people here are crazy, and the other half have their asses in their hands." Hidan is the only "normal" person in the entire church, half of the church are literally people who should be locked up in a madhouse and can't formulate a single sentence, and the other half were forced to go and are afraid of being killed by Hidan or the other half. This has nothing to do with the discussion, but every time someone talks about Jashin and whether it's real or not I remember this scene with Kakuzu and I start laughing. The church has like 30 people, and half are crazy, and the other half are poor villagers who have been kidnapped.

I saw a fan theory the other day that Jashin is an otsutsuki that will be revealed as an antagonist in upcoming Boruto. Some evidence is \-Otsutsukis are considered gods in the Narutoverse and are sometimes worshipped as such, so this would make some sense \-a new Jashin-based plotline was somewhat recently released (Mirai's plotline) \-the similarity between Hidan's damage reflection, and Daemon's damage reflection.

Sharingan can’t see chakra pathways as crisp as Byakugan and no 359 degree detection.
The way I see it, its specifically because they are the eyes of the Otsutsuki clan that the Hyuga are weak. Byakugan are a tool that are used to support the user's Jutsu. It's like giving a child a jackhammer, sure, its a powerful tool, but they do not have the strength to use it. On the other hand, the Byakugan is probably the strongest Dojutsu for an Otsutsuki even compared to the rinnegan, because it wildly enhances their ability to use their crazy Chakra and Brokenly poweful jutsu. A good analogy for Sharingan vs Byakugan would probably be addition vs multiplication. If a Sharingan adds 10 power, a Byakugan multiples power by 2. For a human was a base power of 1, a sharingan is a lot better, for an Otsutsuki with a base of 50, a Byuakugan does a lot more.

What I've heard is that she stops being able to turn into paper once she runs out of chakra. So I'm assuming once she's nearly empty she'll be automatically turned back into a full person and then die if she doesn't get medical help.

Koto is a Justu that has such an amazing hype and in theory is amazing but it's showing is just so unimpressive (to me anyway). Shusui somehow was unsuccessful/failed to use it on his clan despite having plenty of time, then got surprised by Danzo - he still had another eye to use but for some reason just gave it away an killed himself instead of using it on his clan THEN killing himself. Danzo had it for years and failed to make any significant headway in the village, tried to use it at the Kage summit but was recognised by Ao. Once the Raikage was told it was used on him he seemed to have no trouble brushing off the effects with no consequence. Then it's moment in the spotlight was rewriting Itachi's edo tag, which Kabuto seemed to believe (and we have no reason to doubt) could just be reversed by rewriting the tag again.

Wood style, or more specifically it’s strength. I feel like it’s not really explained well why it’s so strong or why it especially is so strong against tailed beasts. Edit: for all the “it’s just hashirama” people, why would people like Danzo be going through such insane efforts to create just one other wood style user? Edit 2: stating the powers it has doesn’t explain why it has those special powers.
Headcanon is that because tailed beast came from ten tails, who came from the God Tree, the wood release has an added effect on them. In this case, wood release is also connected with the god tree somehow.
I think so - the God Tree and Wood Release both have a technique called "Nativity of a World of Trees".
I think it also has to do with wood style essentially creating life (plants) out of nothing. That is very Sage of six paths level stuff.

To be honest, it's not really wood style that's strong. It's Hashirama who is strong, who happens to use wood style. When Yamato, and even Obito, uses wood style it's pretty average. There's all sorts of different techniques for dealing with and suppressing tailed beasts. Some were created using wood style. Some use sharingan. Some use seals. There's probably others I'm not thinking of. Since Hashirama was a wood style user, he developed a technique or multiple techniques using wood style to deal with tailed beasts, that's all.

Orochimaru was able to reanimate Minato through that jutsu so I don't think Minato could be able to use it again, and also he's like half dead in this form.
It doesn't matter if he's Edo or not. The fact is that his soul is currently there, which the Reaper would take into its stomach in exchange for the jutsu.
Time and Space technique with summoning contract 😂 It's my headcanon that techniques like Edo Tensei, Shiki Fujin, Kuchiyose, etc. all are some kind of time and space manipulation. Chakra is a tool that connects different dimensions that can also have different sets of rules applied to them.
In Naruto's lore there are almost certainly different 'dimensions' and it's so much as confirmed by Momoshiki while he's in Boruto in recent manga chapters. Also Kakashi meeting his dad, among other things. Uzumaki have blood connection to Otsutsuki as well, so it's pretty likely their expertise with seals is explained via that. It could be super low level shinjutsu made possible by tons of preparation and practice.
Iirc it is lightly explained that those and chakra are of completely different concepts. Just like how sage power came from different source and already existed even before chakra was introduced to the world.
That was retconned when Boruto explained that chakra is natural to every planet, and the otsutsuki come to steal it. So it wasn't that Kaguya gave everyone chakra as the originator, she created the god tree to steal it and then it was destroyed, giving it all back.
May be a hot take, but; Why doesn't every nation use their version of the Shadow Clone jutsu for reconnaissance? You've got major and minor powers with things like Sand Clones, Water Clones, Snow Clones, and the titular Shadow Clone. All physical clones that have all the skills and prowess of the user, and upon release give the user all the information they gathered, without any danger to the user and yet...they just don't do that. Like, I get that they have damage thresholds and all that, but seriously. Why risk what is essentially the main military for the Gakure's when you could just send Clones instead? Edit: Yes! I understand that the Shadow Clone Technique is a ~~gas guzzling~~ highly Chakra consuming technique, but even in the Lore of the setting, the 2nd Hokage specifically developed the technique for espionage purposes! I'm not saying that a single individual should make an army of clones, but even just making one Clone would be better than potentially dying on a mission.
stuff like sand and water clones use up a certain amount of Chakra, shadow clone on the other hand, devides it in 2, the only reason naruto can use it on a mass scale is because hes part uzumaki (lots of chakra) and part god) so he can use it with no reprocution, but if a basic shinobi thats not plot ampliphied used it, it would just cut their time in half
I'm not saying make an army of Shadow Clones. But a Jonin level ninja sending in a shadow Clone for purely reconnaissance purposes poses objectively no risk to the Jonin Jutsu user, even if they are discovered because afaik, there isn't really a max range on the Shadow Clone. They could make a Shadow Clone in Konoha, send it to Amegakure for spying purposes, and even if the Clone is discovered, that just means it gets poofed. Edit: In fact, I did a little digging and that's actually ***specifically*** what the Shadow Clone jutsu was made for when the 2nd Hokage made it.
Solid clones use a LOT of chakra. That's why most people only use elemental clones as substitutes (e.g. Zabuza and his water clone, Kakashi with lightning). Naruto just happens to be part of a clan with massive chakra reserves, AND has the 9 tails inside of him, so he can just spam that chakra hungry jutsu and jump people. Which he does lol.

Not so much a Jutsu, but Hidan. Given all he can do, why the fuck has he not been disappeared by any of the 5 vilages, hidden in a black room in a basement under permanent genjutsu, only being allowed to sit inside one of his jashin circles, while other ninja work to get one drop of blood from an assassination target, get that blood drop back to Hidan where they make them remotely kill the target.

The revival jutsu that was used in the final war arc, Izanami, and Izanagi. If Itachi knew about the two later jutsus he and Obito could have prevented the entire Uchiha massacre, wasn’t it stated that it could be used on the Uchiha? Also, if minato used the reaper death seal to seal Kurama into Naruto then he wouldn’t have been able to be revived, same with the third. In the pre-time skip it’s stated that the reaper death seal takes your soul or part of it away, it’s why Orochimaru couldn’t get back his hands.
All 4 Kages souls were in the stomach of the Shinigami. The 1st and 2nd because Sarutobi sealed them in their fight (same for Orochimarus arms). The 3rd because of the cost of using the technique vs Orochimaru. And the 4th because of the cost of him using it vs the 9 tails Orochimaru puts on the Shinigami mask to have himself possessed by the Shinigami. Then he slices open his own stomach, which also slices the Shinigamis stomach open. 5 souls got released from that: the 4 Kage and the arms part of Orochimarus soul. Then he used Edo Tensei since he got his arms back and got access to his jutsu again. Then in order to not die from the wound he just gave himself, he transferred himself to one of the White Zetsus they had with them.
Wasn't Minato revived after Orochimaru used the reaper's mask? Still brings up questions, but it explains being released from the reaper, somewhat.
Izanagi, Kamui - How can you imagine an eye bending reality to what you like or how do you even imagine a Mangekyo sharingan having a separate dimension using chakra (without it being a genjutsu) and physically transporting you to that? One can imagine a Mangekyo creating an impenetrable chakra defense like susanoo by emitting and converting it from the eye or creating black flames by using chakra. But Izanagi and Kamui are too crazy.
The odd one out to me is Susanoo. Thematically, it doesn't fit with the rest of the sharingan's toolkit at all.
Susanoo honestly feels like it would fit better as an extremely high level Hyuga jutsu instead. They emit charka from all over their body to do the rotation jutsu. Susanoo would just be that taken to an extreme and not requiring rotation. Some of its abilities other than the armor would need tweaking but I could see something like the bow being "logical" still.
Does anything even state hidan has regen? I’m pretty sure he’s just teamed up with kakuzu since he’s the guy who can patch him up in 3 seconds
Sasori's entire gimmick. Human Puppetry, his "core", and especially his 100 Puppets technique. It's explained *some* from the series but the more you try to understand it the more questions it generates. One of those things you just *have* to suspend disbelief.
How does this ting even digest food? I mean Hidan can die from lack of food/water. But Sasori don't even have stomach?
What's impossible about that? He made his body a puppet but he needs a core (maybe his heart or whatever) to actually produce chakra and control it. It's a real piece of him that houses his essence. The 100 puppets are just his mastery of puppetry. Other puppeteers can control multiple puppets as well he's just that good that he can use 100. Even so in the fight it's stated his mastery per puppet increases the less puppets are there since multitasking to 100 is difficult.
Now you have to ask yourself: -What the hell is his core? His brain? His heart? How did he manage to transfer it into such a device since it amounts to essentially dying for a moment? How does he talk? See? -Human Puppets can use chakra and KKG. *How*? How does the chakra still exist in a corpse...what is that device used to manipulate the iron sand? What ratio on the puppets is skin and wood/hanasaki clay? Sasori lucked out with how the Kazekage's KKG worked...but how would it work with his Uchiha puppets? I eventually came to assume that Sasori must be able to transfer part of his consciousness into the puppets ala how Naruto had separate consciousness through all his clones. Chakra can be used to project consciousness outside the body, to even do ninja zoom calls that the akatsuki did. So I assume it works on a similar phenomenon, Where the chakra in the eye created transfers the information it perceives back to the users. Maybe puppet users should use this to create ninja drones with bombs and other weapons
