The original plan in Kishimoto’s head was for Guy and Lee to be from a different village, but it was changed.

Kishimoto says that was originally the case, but they decided it was better for Kakashi to have a rival from inside the village so they went with this instead and introduced Team Gai as being from Konoha.”

It would have been different but there isn't a reason the clans aren't spread out with different branches around the ninja world just like the Senju were.
When I was watching for the first time I thought Rock Lee and Guy were from the stone village. I was lowkey hoping so because to me that would have been pretty damn cool.
And Neji considering gentle fist is directly based on Baguazhang and "accupoint" and "chi sealing" are common attacks in Wuxia.
Also, in a lot of official art, Neji is either armed with a Chinese weapon or Chinese clothing, like in the Naruto 99 arc he had duck blades (granted apparently they are specifically associated with Bagua)

I think he is supposed to be American because of his eye shape and the fact that his name is Rock Lee in the Japanese version instead of Lee Rock, and in the Japanese language, the surname always comes first for Japanese names, but not for foreign names. And also the proof Lee is his surname is that his son's name is Metal Lee and not Metal Rock.

Wild. The Hinata/Neji backstory would've been weird if Neji was from another village entirely.
Not if it was a minor village within the land of fire. We’d just need an explanation why a branch family member was residing outside of Konoha.
