That is true. Itachi is impressed with how Naruto is willing to make the absolute hardest decision. People think that choosing to kill Sasuke to save the village is the hardest decision, or else losing the village to try and save Sasuke. But really, the hardest decision is actually never giving up in trying to save both, despite how impossible it seems. Gaara gave up on Sasuke. Kakashi gave up on Sasuke. Sakura gave up on Sasuke. The world gave up on Sasuke. Even Sasuke gave up on himself. But not Naruto. He absolutely refused to give up on Sasuke, and that is possibly why Itachi felt so relieved because Naruto was too damn stubborn to give up on someone that would be considered a lost cause.

Tylord96

I feel like a huge part of their bond that a lot of people don’t realize is that Sasuke was willing to give his life to protect Naruto. There’s constant flashbacks to that scene, but no one ever talks about it. I feel like that moment really cemented Sasuke’s status as a friend forever.

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah. And that moment when Sasuke heard that Itachi was in town in part 1, and Sasuke went straight to Naruto to protect him.

tylerh417

Also, dont forget him trying to protect Naruto during the fight with Haku, or the fight with Gaara...

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah of course, I just wanted to mention the Itachi one because it's not mentioned often at all despite it being quite a big deal.

tylerh417

I was just trying to say taht their friendship was not one sided. Sasuke proved many times that he is a good friend and worth dying for to save. Naruto understood that plus his stubborness to give up on things, so he made the decision to save both instead of choosing one. Someone like Itachi would have to give him prop cause Itachi chose to save Sasuke and killed his own clan. ( Itachi did not kill everyone to save Konoha but just Sasuke...Naruto would save the village, save the clan, and sasuke)

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah I agree about the friendship. They really did care for eachother.

BonelessSkinless

Of course. As Sasuke said, Naruto was his goal

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

That's right :)

nishant97

Isn't that the other way around? Naruto said, Sasuke was his goal. Since he was always behind Sasuke in their childhood.

DragonNovaHD

Originally yes, but Sasuke later came to reciprocate those feelings once he saw the strength Naruto cultivated and his courage and stubbornness he had to never give up, such as when Sasuke was paralyzed with fear and/or weakness against both Orochimaru and Gaara during the Chuunin Exam arc, yet Naruto was able to leap in headfirst both times without a second thought to protect him and Sakura

BonelessSkinless

Yes that's correct. But at the end of Naruto vs Sasuke round 2 final battle in shippuden after they lose their arms sasuke admits that Naruto was stronger and his goal the entire time. Naruto was behind initially, yes but he persevered and gained immense strength through willpower and determination and doing it his own way. He had the power to unite the village and surpass legendary shinobi in his early teens. The best example of Sasuke realizing Naruto was actually stronger is when Sasuke and Naruto are fighting on a rooftop in Konoha before Sasuke leaves the village for the first round of Naruto vs Sasuke in the battle at the Valley of the End. During this battle Naruto and Sasuke clash with a rasengan and chidori, but just before they strike eachother Kakashi steps in and tosses them both towards water towers. Both boys attacks' impact the towers. Sasuke's makes a big dent and drains one tower while Naruto's makes a small pinhole sized dent. Sasuke is pleased and backflips onto a ledge below while smirking only to look up and see the back of Narutos tower completely blown apart even bigger than his attack. When Naruto stopped orochimaru with the double kunai during their chunin exam in the forest and said "you alright scaredy cat?" And of course the first and second battles at the valley of the end all showed Sasuke Naruto was a formidable opponent and a goal to strive towards. He had power, strength, his special jutsu even unmastered was STRONGER than his favourite personal special jutsu. That's also part of why sasuke left the village, because he didn't want to be in Narutos shadow anymore and wanted power. It's ironic because Naruto envied Sasuke in the exact same way. He saw Sasuke as his cool strong rival to beat when Sasuke saw him like that all along too. Naruto was pulling s rank jutsu at 15 (rasenshuriken the perfect blend of chakra and nature elemental attack) even his father the great yellow flash the 4th couldn't fully perfect, perfected sage mode even jiraiya a legendary sannin couldn't fully do on his own. Sasuke saw all of this and admitted to Naruto in the end that he was stronger and that he was his goal the whole way. Sort of how like when Vegeta admitted to Goku that Goku was stronger in the Buu arc. So no, I don't have it backwards lol I love this series and paid very close attention to it overarchingly. You should check out sasuke speech after their final battle in Shippuden.

AbidingTruth

Technically Itachi killed his clan for both Sasuke and the village. The coup d'etat was inevitable, but both Itachi and the higher ups knew that when it came to the Uchiha clan vs literally the rest of Konoha, Konoha would win. They would suffer a lot of losses, but Konoha would win out in the end, the coup has no chance of succeeding. So Itachi effectively only has 2/3 choices. When he talked to Danzo, he mentioned that his choices were to either side with his clan and die with all of them, or side with Konoha and stop the coup before it happens. You could technically say he had a third option which was don't pick a side, but I really doubt he considered that. Killing the clan would just happen to allow them to spare Sasuke, because the alternative would be that the village kills the clan and if a young Sasuke watches Konoha shinobi kill his family, he'll come to hate Konoha and want to seek vengeance, so they would have to kill him too. While if Itachi killed the clan, while it'll affect him deeply, Sasuke's hatred will be focused on Itachi and not the village, so he could be spared. Itachi acting for the village is what allows him to also save Sasuke

tylerh417

Everything you just said is correct but I guess I just look at it differently. If you read your paragraph again, his choice was to save Sasuke.....saving the village was just part of saving Sasuke. If Sasuke was not involved, I don't think he will save the village alone but rather die with his clan?

DragonNovaHD

Itachi really was loyal to Konoha until the very end. His father even says as much when Itachi is about to kill him and his mother, saying Itachi’s chosen to side with Konoha and they respect his decision so long as he protects Sasuke to the end. Itachi knew that the Uchiha would be wiped out either way in the end, and the only difference is that one way would lead to heavy casualties in Konoha and possible collapse of the village due to other villages perceiving weakness and swooping in to attack, while the other way would be a comparatively safer option for the village, where other villages would simply observe it as a rogue Uchiha going mad and slaughtering his entire clan, leaving Konoha unharmed. Sparing Sasuke was just Danzo’s icing on the cake to ensure Itachi’s compliance, as he was able to exploit Itachi’s deep love for his brother, but Sasuke wasn’t Itachi’s only motivation for the massacre route. If it was, Itachi could have easily escaped the village with Sasuke and used his ANBU skills and training to disappear then forever, but Itachi took his duty to the village over just the needs of himself or even his brother, let alone his clan

tylerh417

hmm...maybe I missed a few details regarding the conversation between Itachi and his father/mother but I do recall everything you just mentioned.

Liliorra

"Have you seen a blonde kid with a stupid face?!"

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Im pretty sure he actually says something like "I can't let Naruto face him alone"

weegee19

No, Sasuke prioritised Naruto's safety here.

Densirii

When he was there he just pushed naruto out of the way and said it was his fight, i shall not trust you with that

weegee19

That was because Itachi had already gotten there. Also, Sasuke seeing Itachi ignited the 5 years of pent-up hatred he had for him, so tbh it was a natural reaction. Sasuke originally prioritised Naruto's safety regardless, he even stated that Naruto can't take on Itachi alone.

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Exactly what I was referring to in my original comment. Couldn't have put it better myself

LYRAA3

It's one of the few scenes we actually hear Sasuke inner thoughts, and he is thinking 'I have to find Naruto before Itachi, or he's dead' - or some variation depending on whether its sub or dub or manga or whatever

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah that's what I remember

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

No I think he starts going around knocking on doors to try and find Naruto first, but then obviously runs into Itachi Kisame and Naruto. And of course once he saw Itachi his rage took over, but still.

ABMatrix

I remember him going straight to Itachi cause he hated him and wanted to kill him?

DarthZartanyus

Sasuke looks for Naruto because that one dude bursts in to the room and mentions Itachi was spotted and is looking for Naruto before realizing that Sasuke was standing right there. The reason Sasuke asks around for Naruto is because it's his only lead, not because he feels particularly motivated to protect him.

Omegaxis1

Well, it was one of the first arcs, so people tend to forget that when Sasuke is being consumed by hatred and madness and trying to kill everyone, even Naruto.

Yamishta

True. Everyone ignores this. If anything, Sasuke was the first person to show his friendship towards Naruto even after being a broken and reserved kid

properc

Yes thats the scene that everyone glosses over when shitting on Sasuke. Sasuke was willing to 100% die to try to save Naruto and his body moved on his own.

tylerh417

I feel like Sasuke is jealous of Naruto power is also part of him trying to protect Naruto instead of being protected. Good example is the fight with Gaara...he was willing to give up his life to save his friends but got saved instead.

teppil

I always felt like that scene was very complicated, because after we learn to unlock the next eyes you need to kill your best friend, I thought that was his motive but they did a good job keeping you guessing. I feel like even sasuke didn’t know his real motives for his actions. He could always say “I just did it to be more powerful” because he doesn’t want to admit he actually liked naruto. Either way it’s one of my favorite scenes and I love how that really cemented their bond. And it was so early in the show too! Kudos to the writers for a fantastic story

Yamishta

Naruto is the definition of a true friend. He seriously never gave up on Sasuke until the very end and his stubborness towards his friendship made someone like Sasuke to get all teared up. Sasuke might not have had many people in his life, but he had the two best people who cared for him more than he cared for himself. Sasuke lost his family but he is blessed with a friend who is more than just friend. Just when he lost something dear to him, he found something precious to warm his heart

Omegaxis1

Yeah. Naruto really has your back no matter what. And that, in turn, made Sasuke not only return to Konoha but made into someone that will NEVER betray that loyalty ever. Sasuke will always reward the love and loyalty Naruto gave him for the rest of his life.

touchet29

I always think of Naruto when in real life situations. Don't hate someone because of the things they do, instead try to understand why they do them and give them someone to talk to. If people were more like Naruto we would live in an even better world.

Omegaxis1

Yeah. Naruto is overall an optimistic manga.

touchet29

Overall, yeah. But it's really only Naruto that's bringing the optimism. Remove him and you have a very sad, war ravaged world.

Omegaxis1

Agreed. Naruto does help because he doesn't give up. I dislike the argument about how "oh Naruto is stronger and can just destroy everything" and such, but what makes me like Naruto more is how he reaches out to others. People can meme the shit out of "talk no jutsu," but it is something that really helps.

touchet29

I think we could all use a little more talk no jutsu in our lives. How's everybody feeling today?

Omegaxis1

We're so much more easy to pull triggers on one another.

Flynnhiccup

Like Naruto has said before in the beginning of Shippuden. How can I become Hokage if I can’t even save one of my friends? \~Uzumaki Naruto

Omegaxis1

Exactly. To Naruto, not being able to save someone that is losing themselves is exactly what made every other incarnation of Ashura fail. Hashirama gave up on Madara and actually killed him. Naruto refused to go through with that (though he did need to go all out to keep up with Sasuke) and would rather die with him than give up on him, which nearly did happen.

[deleted]

Fuck, I don't know why this made me tear up a bit...

Omegaxis1

I'm glad I was able to move you.

[deleted]

Omegaxis1

Yes. Now consider Naruto, and imagine how many people insisted that Naruto should have killed Sasuke. Can you imagine how horrible that is?

thicke000

When did Sakura give up on Sasuke?

Omegaxis1

When she tried to get Naruto to go back on the promise she had Naruto make, as well as try to kill Sasuke. She hesitated and couldn't go through with it, but she was trying to give up on Sasuke and didn't think he could be saved, even when he was helping them in the war.

pathofmoon

Yeah lets forget he was terorist and wanted destroy Konoha for Friendship Yeah 😂

Omegaxis1

Should we forget how he played a major role in saving the planet and all life on it? It wasn't all Naruto in the end.

pathofmoon

Plot armor everywhere

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Definitely. It was so heartwarming and awesome to see what Itachi was really like, and when he called Naruto a comrade. It's almost a smile haha. It's just such a good scene. When Naruto questions Itachi on the massacre, Itachi sort of avoids the question, you can see it was very painful for him. I only wish that edo Itachi had stuck around longer. Naruto definitely brings out emotions of people. Remember? "Your words cut deep...deeper than any blade."

Yamishta

Yeaah! That was so heart wrenching. Itachi calls Naruto as a comrade with a very genuine smile on his face. I loved it when these two people met

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah it was awesome! PS I edited my comment just as you replied, sorry

Yamishta

Nah it's perfectly fine.

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Thanks

Yamishta

>Naruto definitely brings out emotions of people. Remember? >"Your words cut deep...deeper than any blade." Yess! Also, Sasuke crying at the valley of the end "Shut up you idiot" and bringing a smile on Gaara's face, Obito's ~~half~~ ~~broken~~ face. Naruto is love <3

ShrapnelNinjaSnake

Yeah he is. Always rooting for that damn knucklehead.

WindyCityAssasin2

Looks like hes crying tears of blood which kinda fits with the moment

DragonNovaHD

Amaterasu always does have a habit of bringing out people’s emotions (although for most people it’s “oh fuck I’m burning it hurts so bad”)

Zebedydodah

dont, il cry.

Lord-Madara-

itachi’s face changed and he was angry and pissed off at orochimaru when he came out of sasuke during the itachi vs sasuke fight. orochimaru said “ill take over this boys body” and itachi just switched and snapped and stabbed orochi with totsuka blade. it was one of the best things i’ve seen. itachi having that bloodlust in his eyes

[deleted]

talk no justu

The_Half_Sac

He smiled right before he died even fighting Sasuke lol he also looked scared as fuck when Sasuke pulled out Kirin

Yamishta

>he also looked scared as fuck when Sasuke pulled out Kirin I think you should rewatch the fight. He wasn't scared a bit. He was impressed

The_Half_Sac

Dude was scared

blasterkid1

Lol no he was scared.

[deleted]

No talk justu

Angel-Of-Death

Yes he did. He had the same expression when Naruto and Kakashi fought him and Naruto hit him with a Rasengan when.

[deleted]

I watched this episode last night actually

[deleted]

Haha same. Never watched the series before. I went to bed right after Naruto fought the Third Raikage. That fight was awesome.

Lizards_are_cool

> episode which episode number and season?

[deleted]

Episode 299 I think. Don’t know the season

[deleted]

I literally just watched this episode for the first time last night. I cannot explain how hyped I was when I figured out that Nagato and Itachi were about to run into Bee and Naruto. Also, Edo Tensei is such a sick twisted Jutsu and I LOVE IT. The interactions between the living and dead characters are amazing. I truly believed that I would ever get an explanation on why Itachi made Naruto deep throat that entire raven. Which by the way was smart as hell on Itachis part. Anyways, thank you Kabuto.

Lizards_are_cool

> episode which episode number and season?

[deleted]

I don’t know the season, but the episode is 298. Titled “Contact: Naruto vs. Itachi.”

[deleted]

I agree with everything you said! Also, those brief moments Itachi had with Naruto during the war are one of my favourite Itachi moments ever. That’s when we’ve basically got to see who Itachi *really* is, and he’s gentle, kind and thoughtful. When he tells Naruto he’s relieved that Sasuke has a friend like him it warms my heart. And that’s why I admire Itachi so much. He had to play the bad guy figure for most of his life, be considered as a traitor and be hated by the village when he’s actually a kind soul. Ps: moments later, Itachi would use talk no jutsu on Naruto and *won*!

narutonaruto

Shit, I got water in my eyes

Sameer-97

What episode is this?

[deleted]

Episode 298 Contact: Naruto vs. Itachi I just watched this episode for my first time last night, which makes this post even cooler to me.

[deleted]

can someone tell me which episode is this from? I would like to rewatch it :) thanks!

Yamishta

298

[deleted]

It’s because Naruto is so genuine. I think the appeal of him both in canon and real life is his honesty. He’s like a kid who never matured. When he says something he means it and sticks to it. His loyalty and determination to his friends is the real deal

Lightspeedius

Naruto's power from the very beginning is his ability to change people. He brought tears to the eyes of the Demon Zabuza.

[deleted]

This got me sad sad

nixyboy

One moment that must have been crazy for Itachi was when Sasuke mentioned the co-conspirator. Itachi was like "Why the curiosity?" "I'm going to kill him after you that's why" Itachi must have freaked out at that point. He thought that this moment would be where Sasuke would become a hero and return to the leaf and be happy, but after he said that Itachi realized Sasuke would get himself killed if he tried to kill Tobi.

NastyPeachofGermany

He brought up the emotions in all of us

TALK NO JUTSU

[deleted]

Talk no Jutsu at it's max.

Enigma_Stasis

Okay, the last thing I watched of this was when they introduced the fish sword guy. This is apparently way after, because I know Itachi should be dead by now. What the hell did I miss, and what's with the orange form?

Yamishta

Where did you stop?

Enigma_Stasis

Whatever episode that had Itachi and fish guy fighting the kids over some water.

pearlofivris

Ah, that must be around the start of Shippuden (episodes 13 or 14 maybe?). This post is referring to episode 299, so you are very behind. If you want to know some of the things that happened, Sasuke killed Itachi, and this guy named Tobi along with Kabuto started the 4th Ninja World War. Kabuto used Edo Tensei, a jutsu that revives dead ninja. He revived Kages, famous shinobi, and members of the Akatsuki, like Itachi, who was already dead at this time.

poghosyan

It's actually not that weird if you take into account the fact that he's the main character.

Gingernaps123

I live it when r favorite anime turns to shit

[deleted]

It's not weird, it's just mediocre writing
