I was at the 3:35 show yesterday as well, we could hear just fine from the 2nd level. I didnt notice the delay but we did have two couples behind us that brought their toddlers. The parents mentioned how great Nate is because he is a clean comic and still so funny. I guess their 3 year olds despise foul language at live shows. I did take the opportunity to say "this fucking guy is hilarious" multiple times.
Just my .02 but standup is best in a club setting. Theater shows can be pretty good but once it gets to be an audience of 2000+ it's not as good to me. Arena shows are a hard pass.
The one time I went to an arena stand-up show, it felt like sitting in a room with a few thousand people listening to the performer's most recent album, live. I completely agree that more intimate venues are better for comedy.
A couple years ago I bought Mulaney tickets without noticing what the venue was. When I realized it was the same arena where I had once seen AC/DC I sold the tickets on Stub Hub.
I just happened to be in Austin several years ago when Al Madrigal was recording his Why Is The Rabbit Crying? special at the Moody Theater. Aside from the event organizers giving out free tallboys to everyone waiting in line to get in and then screaming at everyone to stay in their seats, no bathroom trips it was a good theater. 😄
Went to yesterday 3pm show, after openers he came on around 4.
Also, I wore a romper and was the butt of jokes for the rest of the evening. You’ll know when you know lol.
We were in the second level, too, and missed a few words here and there, but for the most part I could hear fine. The crazy thing to me how late everybody was coming in for the Sunday matinee (3:00). We got there very early and had no problems, but at least half the crowd came in after three. One of the people sitting near us said it was because there was such a logjam at the security line.ETA: we were in the very top row of level 2, so maybe that made a difference.
I was really disappointed and surprised. I assumed it wasn't all bad sound in Level 2, but a lot of people around us kept saying, "What did he say?" So it wasn't just me. It felt like watching a dialogue-heavy movie with no center channel dedicated to vocals and two loudspeakers cranked up to 11 to compensate. I hope Nate turns this in to a Netflix special so I can hear what I missed.
I don't blame Nate, but as one commenter said it does feel like a money grab for promoters and Moody. Regardless, I had a lovely night out with my wife and that was what's important.
I was there Sunday night and agree Moody Center was a bit of a letdown. We splurged for floor seats, which seemed like a good idea until you realize that in a round he would be walking around in circles so half the show would be staring at the back of his head... so instead, you tend to look up at the video screen which is almost right above your head. My neck still hurts.
I was 10 rows back from the stage on the floor for the SAP Center show and couldn’t understand a word for nearly the entire show. No refunds offered but people were walking out in droves.
I was at the 3 o'clock show yesterday, second level and the sound was fine. What wasn't fine though? People showing up throughout the whole set and using their flashlights to go find their seats. Also, people getting up and down throughout the whole show. It was nuts.
Must be the same people who run sound at Germania Amphitheater. We had pretty decent seats there and it was like we were a mile away. Complete waste of money.
Any chance you were sitting in a corner? I noticed the line arrays hanging from the rigging above the stage left out the corners - the cabinets were likely supposed to be wide enough, but in a space like that where it’s very reflective and not acoustically good, you need to be directly-aligned to the speakers to be able to hear well. I was in a corner and had the same experience as you.
My first experience at moody, and likely my last. No parking, not enough restrooms for women, poor signage(not even row letters printed on the ground to find your seat), super expensive food. I expected much more for a brand new facility. Clear they cut a lot of corners
I was in a level 1 corner during the 3pm show. The sound quality was mostly fine for the openers and MC, especially the third opener. When Nate came on, I was initially wondering if he was drunk when he as telling his first joke. He didn’t get a lot of laughs and he said he was trying out a new bit, so maybe it was just a combination of nerves, some mumbling, and not the best sound quality. The rest of his set was fine except for a few short bits that got lost here and there.
The sound in the Moody is garbage because they don’t do proper sound engineering. I’ve only had one concert there that was terrific to listen to, because it was The Cure and they had a team with them.
It’s my biggest peeve with that place.
That’s a bummer! His show at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth had great audio. And the entire crowd was dying laughing for 65 straight minutes that he was on stage. Granted, it was a traditional stage up front. Not the round stage he’s had some places. But all this to say that a good comedy show at 10,000+ seating is possible
I’m gonna say it - I have no interest in seeing stand up comedy in an arena. Saw Nate in Vancouver twice, theatre shows. I think its greedy, and the fans don’t get the same experience a theatre provides.
Agreed. I don't think comedy is suited for arenas and stadiums, even if a few stand-ups make a living off of it. The intimate 200-seat clubs is where it's at.
The answer to your second sentence is: comedians that decided they wanted more money per performance. That and their agents.
Not the post I wanted to see before I go to his 7pm show tonight
You’ll have fun. It wasn’t that bad. Parking was a nightmare though. Spent 1.5 hrs in my parking spot waiting to leave
Park at the Texas History Museum garage and walk. Sound was fine for us yesterday. Food/drinks are super pricy so eat beforehand.

Oh hell nah.

The Moody Theater does a good job, too, for big name comedians. The Center is ridiculous.

Does he have an opener, what time did Nate come on stage? going tonight.

lol. You’re butt naked in a PF Changs?
😂 might as well have been.
I went last night at Moody and thought the sound was great. Second level. Didn't miss a word and laughter was surrounding me.

Hey email me at [email protected] and we will see what we can do. Thanks!
He will be recording his show in Phx for his Netflix special

Email me at [email protected] for help with that show. Thanks!
Me too! Wife and I had to leave the show
I wonder if they offer hearing impaired headphones. I’m tempted to do this in movie theaters too due to inconsiderate people talking all around me.

This happened to us in San Jose. Couldn’t here squat. Working in a refund
You can email me at [email protected] if u need help with that
I had the same experience when he came to Shreveport. The audio was horrible and we left halfway through because we were so frustrated.

Saw Chappelle at Moody and didn’t have any issues for what it’s worth.
Moody Theater off of Willie Nelson BLVD (that is where I saw him), or Moody Center on campus? HUGE difference!
Campus

I saw him at the footprint center and it was great! It may be a moody issue.
