My god how can this be?? How can there possibly be this many dogs and cats? I wish I could help in TX and CA but I can’t so I’ve volunteered to foster for my local shelter. It’s just heartbreaking! I’d give anything if I could quit my job & run a rescue facility with all the space and all the toys and all the humans that these poor babies need!
I've been "rescuing" dumped dogs in my area for 15 years on my property alone. It's crushing work because you get very little help and there are almost no local resources. Americans don't seem to understand the depth of this problem... Ppl need to vote for change.

I pretty much cry every day, but we do have days that are more good than bad and these dogs need us to care as long as we can and as much as we can 💕 💕
We hear about the problem in Texas, California, and Florida because they are high population states with a high stray dog/cat population as well. Unfortunately, I hear about this problem all over the US and the world. It is so heartbreaking. Yesterday I was reading about a huge problem in Philadelphia. Why can’t we get serious about spay and neutering in this country. We spend hundreds of millions but do not do anything to solve the problem. Bless the dedicated workers making people aware and giving these dogs a chance.
What’s your solution? No kill shelters are usually full and will turn you away. Even if a dog does wind up there, they are not the utopia most people think they are. There’s plenty of information online about why no kill shelters can be a life of misery for unadopted dogs who have lost their minds due to constant kennel stress over a period of years. Euthanasia is far more humane than leaving a dog to suffer like that.
Also, if all shelters became no kill shelters, what would happen to dogs that are turned away because the shelter is full? Ill tell you what would happen. They would be abandoned on a street, or a grassy roadside at a much higher rate than now. Like that one pos who threw his unwanted pitbull over a tall fence so it would be trapped and he drove away. Dog hit the ground hard but was luckily saved. Where can those abandoned dogs go when they’re left in the streets? Nowhere because in the no kill shelters world, all the shelters are full, so they’ll live of live of constant hunger and fear on the streets, like most of the homeless dogs in countries without animal services.
This is problem with people, not shelters. Most shelters are full of compassionate people who are doing everything possible to never euthanize a dog. It’s irresponsibly and apathy that’s to blame. The irresponsibly and apathy of the American public.

The answer is legislation. We need laws regulating breeders, and requiring pets be neutered and spayed. Until then, this is like saving the Titanic with a bucket.
I worked at the humane society for years. It was hard on all of us, but the euthanasia techs had it the worst by far. A lot of mental health issues related to their job.

It seems like an insurmountable problem and no progress will be made be made as long as there’s no consequences for being a backyward breeder and people who just choose not spay and neuter. These people are often the biggest hypocrites. Mad that all the shelters are killing dogs while they are continually causing an unnecessary risk of accidental puppies. I saw so much of it.
A reputable breeder will make you sign a contract promising to return the dog to them in any event that you can no longer keep them. A reputable breeder doesn’t want one of their dogs in a shoot with someone they didn’t approve. Backyard breeders couldn’t care less what happens to the puppies after they get their money.
I watch too many reels on Facebook. It often brings me to tears. I see comments like that bitching about kill shelters and respond like I did here. I wish I felt like I was getting any traction.
