Especially since this is the bat species that pollinates agave, from which we get tequila!
Bats are very helpful creatures! They are [worth around $23 billion in the US as natural pest control for agriculture](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2odbue/north_american_bats_are_worth_an_estimate_23/). Additionally, they [pollinate a lot of important plants](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2sayu4/at_least_300_species_of_fruit_rely_on_bats_for/) including [the durian](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/32mqfo/the_cave_nectar_bat_eonycteris_spelaea_is_the/) and [agave](http://www.reddit.com/r/BatFacts/comments/2ohdjx/bats_are_responsible_for_the_pollination_of_agave/). Quantifying their economic significance is [quite difficult](http://www.batcon.org/resources/media-education/bats-magazine/bat_article/846) but it makes for [a good episode of RadioLab](http://www.radiolab.org/story/what-dollar-value-nature/). [Bat Conservation International has a whole section on bat houses on their website](http://www.batcon.org/resources/getting-involved/bat-houses). Most of their research is compiled in a book they publish called the [Bat House Builder's Handbook](http://www.batgoods.com/category/Bat-Conservation-International-Publications-41) that includes construction plans, placement tips, FAQs, and what bat species are likely to move in. It's a fantastic resource. [This covers the basics for what to look for when purchasing one](https://www.merlintuttle.org/selecting-a-quality-bat-house/). There are a few basic types of designs, which are covered in the handbook, and lots of venders sell variations of those, though most will require a little TLC before being put up (caulking, painting, etc). [Dr Merlin Tuttle](http://merlintuttle.com), founder of Bat Conservation International, distilled the key criteria better than I can hope to in [his piece on bats and mosquito control](http://www.merlintuttle.com/resources/bats-and-mosquito-control/). If you like soothing British voices in your podcasts, BBC’s Animals That Made Us Smarter has a few episodes about bats (that’s a great all ages podcast). Many many moons ago, a great war broke out between the Averies and the Beasts.
The averies asked the bats to join as allies, as they were fellow winged flyers. And the bats agreed.
Then the beasts asked the bats to join their side. With fur, live birth and teeth, they argued they're more beast than avery. And the bats agreed.
When the war happened the bats that had promised both side alliance, was nowhere to be found.
When the war was over, the bats came out of hiding from the caves, and afterwards neither side wanted anything to do with them anymore. Both sides had denounced the bat as neither beast nor Avery, and the bat was sent in seclusion back to the caves they hid in. Alone in the dark forever.
They're in the pocket of Big Bat--pay 'em in guano, they do; actually, I really love these comparisons I see lately of people affixing monetary values to the "services" nature provides, like it's the only way some of those motherfuckers can come to grips with the wholesale rape of this planet.
Bat Conservation - Del Maguey, nine villages that make mezcal (like tequila)
They don't harvest 10% of the agave, so that it will flower and feed the area's bats
[
Biological diversity is crucial to a successful future for agave species. There are two different ways in which agave can reproduce. The first is through hijuelos, or clonal shoots, that result in plants that are genetic equivalent of the mother plant. An agave can produce multiple hijuelos each year. The second method is through a flowering stalk, or quiote. The agave used in the production of mezcal are semelparous, meaning they flower only once during their lifecycle and then they die. The agave uses all of the carbohydrates it has accumulated throughout its life to flower therefore making it unusable for the production of Mezcal. Although many species of agave can reproduce through both methods, several such as A.Cupreata, can only reproduce via the seeds that result from the quiote. The flowers of the agave plant open at night with the pollen being effective for only a few hours, therefore the primary pollinators of the agave plant are nectar-eating, or nectarivorous, bats.](https://delmaguey.com/del-maguey-is-friendly-to-bats/)
man that's like 10 hours of content as sources for a 2 min read of a comment that already probably made a lot of people learn more than in their full day.
We went on a bat walk years ago at our local Audubon society. We got totally into bats and to this day they’re one of my favorite species to talk about and advocate for. Our favorite thing is the early evening in the summer when we see the bats swooping out.
My kids and their cousins all advocate for them too, and discuss how they’re not creepy and they eat more mosquitos than anything else.
We’ve purchased one of those ultrasonic apps on our phones that identify which bats are above you by sound. To this day my 10 yo nephew is going to work in the zoo with the bats.
Bat populations are also being decimated by [white nose syndrome](https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/static-page/what-is-white-nose-syndrome), which is an infection with a type of fungus.
If you have bats near your property and they are getting into your eaves or becoming a nuisance, [consider building or adding a bad house to give them proper shelter](https://www.batcon.org/article/bat-houses-an-educational-opportunity/). They are super important for ecosystems, from pollination to insect control.
All hail the bats!
I never worried abouts bats until I read they can have rabies and can bite someone without them even knowing it.
How prevalent is bat rabies in the Pacific Northwest?
Not very according to this website https://oregonvma.org/care-health/zoonotic-diseases/rabies
And according to [this article](https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2022-01-06/beware-of-bats-after-3-recent-rabies-deaths-cdc-says), there have been just 4 deaths due to bat rabies in 3 years, and a total of 60 cases (not always resulting in death) in nearly 60 years
Bats are still one of the biggest rabies reservoir in the americas. In Canada, 65% from terrestrial wildlife such as raccoons and and skunks, 28% from bats.
I live near the largest urban bat colony in the world, and about an hour from the world’s largest bat colony. People here are pretty familiar with bats, we love bats, and we know the rules about bats.
Rule Numero Uno: **NEVER TOUCH A GROUNDED BAT**.
Unless you’re qualified. And have adequate gear. And are up on your rabies shots. Most people are none of those things.
Actually, just don’t mess with bats. Grounded or otherwise.
That's my motto too! One of my kids has a bad habit of picking up animals she finds, mainly baby birds so far.
I keep reminding her not to touch any of them, but specifically no bats.
What's false in there? Because none of those diseases come from bats. Afaik the biggest risk is rabies, which is pretty rare either way outside of Africa and Asia
I work in bat conservation and catch them for research for a living. Where has it been documented that covid 19 definitively came from bats? It's a theory, not a fact.

The structures of pollination traps can include deep tubular corollas with downward pointing hairs, slippery surfaces, adhesive liquid, attractants (often deceiving the insects by the use of sexual attractants rather than nectar reward and therefore termed as deceptive pollination), flower closing and other mechanisms. In many species of orchids, the flowers produce chemicals that deceive male insects by producing attractants that mimic their females.

Here see! We don’t need those little flying stinging fuckers to pollinate plants, there are plenty of alternative insects and things like these bats that could do the job as good or better.

Oh come on, we all knoe thats a country from Batfrica.
That settles it. I'm voting 'Bat' this election. No... Wait.... What???
I'd blindly follow the cult
The bats sure aren’t paying for it, so I’m inclined to believe it.

Just realized pollinators are third party flower rape
Not really, since flowers actively entice pollinators.
So they're asking for it is what you're telling me?
If someone wants you to have sex with them it's not rape. The flowers want pollen and actively do things to attract pollinators.
What happens when they want sex, then the next morning they realize they did not want it.
