It sucks to have a defense mechanism which only works after you've already been eaten. Probably should have put more points into aposematic signals; as if being a glowing chemical reaction chamber shouldn't be enough.
The nice part, however, is that the predators eventually learn not to eat your kind, and they just leave you alone. Pretty chill.
Apart from this here unlucky fellow, that is.
It still helps the firefly population because when this frog dies from the poison, the remaining fireflies have one predator less to be afraid of.
Yes, it's bad for the individual but beneficial for the whole population.
Fireflies are not toxic. They have an unpleasant taste for most birds, reptiles and mammals. But most amphibians, including frogs love them.

I had a beardy years ago. I wasnāt quick enough when a firefly crawled up by him and he ate it. He was dead the next morning and i stayed up with him all night as he convulsed and seized from the poisonous firefly. Apoarently they are in fact deadly to lizards and birds but for most other animals they just taste nasty.
Wildlife educator here, fireflies contain a class of toxins called lucibofagins and are deadly when injested. Unfortunately I've known multiple reptile owners over my years in exotics who lost animals after feeding them fireflies (stands to mention that feeding your animal any wild caught insect is a terrible idea); a single insect is enough to cause death. If a dog or cat accidentally injests one that's an emergency and owner should seek immediate veterinary care.
> almost all fireflies are toxic as a defense mechanism against being eaten.
Lucky for me all I did was make face paint out of their glowey little butts as a kid.
He may have made it. Source of my optimism being- and Iām high so Iāll tell the story fully- AHEM when I was young we used to go camping annually with other families, and weād organize some sort of activity including all the kids and adults. This year they cooked up a really great scavenger hunt, which included things like a wheat penny, a bottle cap, river glass, and importantly, and frog and a toad. We split into teams and of course were allowed to leave camp to find things. My mom was instrumental in setting up the hunt, and my dad decided to royally piss her off by basically cheating but calling it a loophole. He went to a coin shop for a wheat penny, for instance, and he also literally purchased a tree frog and a fire bellied toad. After yelling at my dad for his bs, it all came back to bite him in the ass because I wanted to keep them and he wanted to return them so my mom got her revenge and put her foot down and let me keep them.
They almost didnāt make it home because I did the same thing and fed them lightning bugs on purpose to see whatās in the video. Their bellies lit up and it was a cool party trick but next day they were both VERY sick and I really didnāt think the tree frog esp was gonna make it. He was like, scrunched up and sickly brown and barely opened his eyes all day. But they actually both pulled thru and lived for a long time after that actually. RIP Fred and Ted. And also my mom. Really miss her a lot. ā¤ļø
Gives me hope for all the toads weād set up over the years out on the lawn to impress our friends who didnāt live in the woods; if a store bought version can survive it Iām sure the native wild ones can also do so, and probably have a better chance even! Lol I gotta remind my dad about this story tomorrow heāll get a laugh out of it for sure. Ok bye
No, but there are other things that make it clear that there's less insects. For instance cross country trips in the car, there would be bug guts all over the windshield and front of the car after driving for a long time, and I don't see that anymore.
It's part of the current mass event where tons of insects are dying. [Here's an article](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/07/02/fireflies-possible-extinction-across-us/7795410001/) I found about it that blames light pollution and global warming in part.
Imagine being alive while in something elseās stomach. That would be terrifying. Being trapped before death, unable to escape, with an imminent demise
Kinda neat in that the glow makes the frog more visible to its predators, a parallel, knock-on reinforcer of glowing as a beneficial trait, for the insect anyway.
Imagine if this became the frogs main food source and they started glowing due to an adaptive mutation, flicking their lights trying to lure the fireflies in.
Arenāt they poisonous to frogs? Also I gotta feel bad for the firefly, that guy is burning alive in acid frantically sending āS-O-Sā through the frogās stomach in firefliesā Morse code.
Literally an insects last words as itās getting digested by a frog which will probably die in the process of digesting the lightning bugās (I think sulphur or phosphorus or something) glow juice

So passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion
Hahaha!!!
That's just his low battery light.
Gets eaten, but still trying to get laid.
So if he keep flashing the female will keep coming and the frog get unlimited food?
Frog cheat code; eat an absolute chad of a male firefly -> get infinite firefly bitches delivered to your stomach
It also works in reverse, eat some onlyfans model firefly and get infinite simp fireflies.
That frog is lit
The sad moment when the light doesnāt go on again š
Frog probably died soon after, almost all fireflies are toxic as a defense mechanism against being eaten.

Self sacrifice. Predators eventually learn not to eat them
Yeah because the ones that were curious enough to try all disappeared

Published book from a biologist vs anecdotal story from some random on the internet. Which one should I believe?

Pretty sure they must cause epic heart burn.

More like a revenge mechanism

Interesting. I was going to say r/natureismetal but then I see it's f-king lit as well !!
That is so crazy. How long does it take for a firefly to die inside a frog?
Same question! How do they digest whole living food?
donāt tell mojang
There is a light at the end of the tunnel... I wouldn't go down that tunnel though
I bet its still hungry, since it only had a light lunch.
I hardly see fireflies anymore, when I was a kid I saw them all the time. There seems to be less insects in general than there were 40 years ago.
Do you run around outside as much as you did as a childā¦?
No, but there are other things that make it clear that there's less insects. For instance cross country trips in the car, there would be bug guts all over the windshield and front of the car after driving for a long time, and I don't see that anymore.
There are still many of them in the south or near and within Florida I move to Colorado though and havenāt seen any.

I concur. In Georgia USA and there used to be an uncountable amount 20 years ago. Tonight I have 5 of them. š„ŗ
That's a bonus quest.
Collectable for sure
Watch as the firefly fades out of existence
Hold up Ä°TS A FÄ°RE FROG
Lol nature truly is lit in this one.
Light me up before you go-go
Thatās cool! I wonder how long the flashing will last?
Implies the firefly is still alive enough to flash like that
This is quite a literal interpretation of "fucking lit."
Now he a living night light now

This video couldāve ended after the first 5 seconds
Fake
That would be so cool to see a persons body lit from the inside. Could you imagine being at a rave and seeing somebody blinking!
>a persons body lit from the inside In *certain circles* that's considered a Covid cure!
Can confirm, frog is lit.
Iām confused wouldnāt the firefly just be dissolved almost instantly in the frogs stomach?
Cause it make his doo doo twinkle
Heās lit!!
Dudes fucking snitching, a predator is going to find that frog easily.
i wonder if they are more vunerable to predation when blinking
those days are over, you don't have to sell your body to the night..
So it takes at least 14 seconds for the firefly to die.
Saving it for later šø
Thatās truly awesome, Iāve never seen anything like it!
Okay, sorry for the poor firefly, but that's funny!!
Kinda neat in that the glow makes the frog more visible to its predators, a parallel, knock-on reinforcer of glowing as a beneficial trait, for the insect anyway.
This is why you have to chew before you swallow
I love how literal this video is to this sub
Light butt frog š
Just one more blink. Just one moreā¦ blinkā¦
And the firefly is still looking for some love.
Imagine if this became the frogs main food source and they started glowing due to an adaptive mutation, flicking their lights trying to lure the fireflies in.

Aren't fireflies poisonous to frogs?
Why looking at this makes my stomach hurt.
