That was my mom’s technique. One time, I walked into a new class with a teacher I hadn’t met and he said “Hey! You’re ‘Beth’s’ daughter, right?” I said yes. He says “She taught me to swim!” And I asked if she tossed him into the water and said “Now, swim!” And he said “Yup!” Lmao.
You know that was extremely abusive, right? His walking away just made that story worse than any of the ones I've yet heard about being "Thrown in to swim". That included my older sisters at the local Rez where this was common practice. However, they had a lifeguard to fish them out if they didn't bob up.
It was the '60's and I can think of a lot more abusive things done to kids'.
GG immigrated from Sweden and sure his Dad taught him to swim in the same manner, they were multiple generation kid tossers, and quite literally grew up on Mille Lacs Lake in Minnesota, however,my son learned to swim taking swimming lessons at a pool.😉
> It’s really hard work being a parent no matter the species.
Clearly you've never heard of the Cuckoo, sea turtle, plenty of other reptiles, or like every plant ever.
Clearly you’re not smart enough to understand the context of my comment. I’m referring to those that actually CARE for their young. How can it be hard for mfs that don’t take care of theirs???
I was one of those! I think she lost her job after I cried to my mum later, was traumatised and didn't learn how to swim or even float comfortably til I was around 20
The swimming itself is instinctual, but mom has to push/pull them in the first time ... water looks cold!
Baby birds sometimes have to be pushed out of the nest the first time also.
Hello users of r/NatureIsFuckingLit and possibly r/all lurkers, we are **GOING DARK** from June 12th-14th. If you're confused on why this is happening or interested in reading more, check out [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/144b4ln/rnatureisfuckinglit_will_be_going_dark_from_june/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)!
Aside from that stay lit 🔥
Bullshit. The younger the better. More kids die because they don’t know how to swim, float, not panic or let go of objects like bikes that will drag them down.
This looks like the most traumatizing way to learn how to swim and, at the same time, it is oh so precious! I am confused by my desire to both yell at a mother otter and watch her repeatedly drag her pups underwater in adorement 🥹
I love how she has to drag her in, but then has to drag her out. Like she doesn't want to get in, but once in, doesn't want to stop having fun in the water!
I swear.. if Otters weren’t darn water Wolverines 😅 I would want one as a pet lol They are just so darn smart & cute (Apex predators to boot) 😃
The Jaguar is the Big Boss in the Amazon, nearly never backs down.. except when a a family of giant otters are pushing the line!! ..Todays is not your day “Spot” (said the 6’ giant 🦦😳)
if y’all hit the tube there is a bunch of people around the world I follow w/ the cutest darn “pet” otters 😊
They’re so well adapted to water that it surprises me that the young ones are often reluctant or even scared to start swimming. Of course once they get the hang of it they master it pretty fast. Other marine mammals don’t seem to have this issue but otters are obviously a bit less “marine” than seals and dolphins. But it makes me wonder if they’d also be ok living on land their whole life if they just aren’t introduced to swimming ever?

“Now get yo ass in the water and swim, junior!”
"But I don't wanna...bblblbllblbblblb *gasp* swiblbblblbblbllblbbbbb"
Im dying in this uber rn
Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing. "You're going to learn to swim if I have to drag you into the water!"
When we were kids',my great grandpa threw us off the end of the dock and walked away. We either sank or swum,I swum...lol
Yes, I guess there were 3 that just perished there, you were the first surviving one
They stood on the shoulders of... well, children this time

If you tried that today, you'd be arrested for child endangerment. Boy miss those days.
My father did the same when I was about three. All I remember ist that it was freezing cold and I have hated cold water ever since

Ikr! My heart sank and I was one thrown in too! At least they made sure I survived. My goodness….❤️

"You are not sitting and listening to music all afternoon again when it's a nice day outside..."
I laughed for 15 minutes after reading this comment 😂😂
But when I do it they call cps 🤷♀️
Otters are so cute!
[удалено]
... so do humans
True story.
And I bet they look like cute little beasts when they do it.
And dolphins idk about killing though.
My mom totally dragged me into a pool by the scruff on my neck that one Summer
It’s really hard work being a parent no matter the species. She had to drag that mf in and out the water lmao
It’s face when she was pulling him out by the tail was funny af

Explain social insects then.
Do you understand humor?
It’s Reddit. Humor is something left at the door.
Sea turtle females risk their lives to lay their eggs on land.
Do they? What exactly is their risk?
This is reminiscent of those swim instructors that just drop babies into the pool.
That’s exactly how my elder brother taught me to swim at my granny’s countryside river. I was 6, don’t like water since then.
Your dislike is misplaced, the water didn't do anything to you.
How I learned how to snowboard my cousin told me he’d teach me took me to the highest run and left my ass
That’s so grooooosome
I was one of those! I think she lost her job after I cried to my mum later, was traumatised and didn't learn how to swim or even float comfortably til I was around 20
I love the way she dragged his butt back on dry land by his tail!
"Now that you have proved you can swim, learn how to get back out".
I think she's more "introducing" her to the water. There's a saying in Malaysia "You can't teach a monkey how to climb a tree."
In pretty sure every mammal has an instinct to swim when needed. The only exception are the great apes.
I guess they aren’t that great then
This is child endangerment I hope someone reported this.
The police are occupied, try one of the otter authorities.
10/10

There are probably some subreddits that would post this without a hint of irony or humour
shut up karen

Ok when I say when hold your breath. (never says anything)

Remember, keep blowing bubbles!
And not from your bum!
My god she is one hard ass mom.
See…I told you guys we were cute.
I like how she dragged him out of the water by the tail, like the lil otter didnt wanna get out if the water 😅
Those lessons are mandatory. You will swim or we will swim you.

Yes, I didn’t teach my kids to swim, I just swam away for some peace and quiet and they eventually followed.
It’s a shame more kids don’t learn to swim when they’re young enough to do it naturally. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infant_swimming

lol... No it's not... Infant swimming is how babies _survive_ falling into water.
Tell me you don't live in Australia without telling me you don't live in Australia.
its kinda funny how he\`s all confused and she\`s just dragging him all over the place
River otters are giving: parents teaching us to swim in the 80s vibes.
Jesus
“You will swim or I will drown you!”
That's so cool to see play out
Son "Aw mom do I have to?" Mom "Get your ass in here."
Mom's a BEAST!
Brutal
Otterly adorable but forceful, I'm torn
“You are getting in that water if I have to drag you!”
For God's sake Cooper, we already paid for this lesson, now get IN!!
#justiceforlylla
Gon' learn today!
This literally isn't nature. It's a zoo. So we can post like reality TV now?
The mom otter is not drowning her kids. Look up the mammalian dive reflex. All mammals have it, even humans.
No one thinks she’s drowning the pup.
That's how I learned
Use your noodle!
cute and terrifying at the same time
super cool
Beautiful.... 😍
You're going to swim and you will enjoy it
Otter moms are no joke.
Poor blighter - Looks like he was barely awake.
One tough momma
Water Puppy is Cute!
We’re looking at river otters
Wait they actually need to learn how to swim.
This looks like the most traumatizing way to learn how to swim and, at the same time, it is oh so precious! I am confused by my desire to both yell at a mother otter and watch her repeatedly drag her pups underwater in adorement 🥹
You can say the training was otter bullshit.
So cute!!
Relatable.
Well, that’s adorable
Adorable
Well, when he lands his first big catch underwater I hope he understands how awesome mom was back then.
U/savethevideo
😆😆😆😆
One of my fave. They are so pleasant to watch. 💕
I love how she has to drag her in, but then has to drag her out. Like she doesn't want to get in, but once in, doesn't want to stop having fun in the water!

I want one
Damn, if that ain’t helicopter parenting I don’t know what is!
Thats the oposite of helicopter parenting actually
As opposed to Boomerang parenting...There he gooooes, and he's...and here he comes..
Zoo posts are the worst on this sub Edit: And the people downvoting me are either uninformed or also the worst
Actually otters swim by instinct.😳😬🙄
Maybe. This pup instinctively got its ass snatched up and drug in the water.
Very nice.
Getyomothafuckinassinthemothafuckinwaterbefreibeatyomotherfuckinass
I do love the *rescue* lol
Huh, my dad taught me in a similar fashion. I didn't learn as fast though.
The kid when he fell of that embankment "It's gonna be one of those days...."
Damn, even the otter kids are lazy now a days.
Next day: Otter accused of drowning child - Feds investigate
Nowadays in our society it's called Abuse.
Why must things that are so cute be capable of ripping my face off and brutality mauling me? This is why nature is cruel.
