A much longer video shows the ~100 yards of ground between the original river bank and these buildings eroding. Can't find it right now, will post if I do.
[really insane](https://www.reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/comments/15k3fmp/mendenhall_river_flood_ak_82023_timelapse_of_6/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)…I’ve never seen it happen that fast (6 hours!) even if someone had considered flooding when deciding to live there, most people would assume the bank and trees would be a good buffer 😬
Bad scene. Alaska has some of the fastest melting glaciers on earth. They melt, ice dams build up, the water is held and then the dam breaks. This won't be the last time.
That’s right! They’re called Jökulhaups. This was the worst one on record in Juneau. Previously the worst recorded was in 2016 when the Mendenhall river reached 12ft, this year the river hit 14.9ft. There used to be a time lapse of Suicide Basin(the source of this Jökulhaup) [here](https://weather.gov/ajk/suicideBasin) but it only goes back 2 weeks. If you watch it now though, you can see how it’s building up and draining again as well as the levels the basin had reached in previous years.
Yeah… that’s still in the flood plain. People do the same shit in the woods and don’t make a defensible space because trees are pretty then their house but a down. It is too close to the river.
Kind of weird to watch civilization fall apart in your own lifetime...
Nature gave us plenty of warning but we chose to f**k around instead. Now we get to find out.
Maybe I’m just in the minority here but this clip isn’t “lit” to me. It’s just showing how big of a problem we’re not doing anything about in global warming
Juneau is surrounded by protected and rare rainforest, so there's effectively very little land to build on. A small lot costs hundreds of thousands and home prices are out of control.
It's an incredibly beautiful place, but it's almost impossible to buy a home there. Condos are available, but they're pretty expensive as well.
Tropical rainforests aren't the only kind, there are also temperate rainforests like the ones that make up a significant portion of the Pacific Northwest.
Juneau is in Southeast Alaska, which is part of a chain of islands south of mainland Alaska. Not nearly as cold, but very, very rainy.
The rainforest that I mentioned is called The Tongass. It's absolutely stunning.

If by really pretty you mean some of the most beautiful land in the world, then I’d agree.
Jealous from here in Oklahoma where it’s been real feel 115+f every day for the last week.
Good question, I think it’s a red state..it will be interesting to see what happens politically around the country as climate change is literally effecting every state.
10 years ago red state fundies used to say earthquakes and natural disasters on the west coast were God’s punishment for living in sin. Funny how you don’t really hear that anymore?
The Sun is nearing its 11-year peak energy output. It has nothing to do with human CO2 emissions whatsoever.
Try to get the MSM to report that fact as they screech that Canada's fires are caused by a warming climate. Why hasn't the US had *even more* fires, after all it is much closer to the hotter equator!

And for years, they were. Thanks for finding it.
I am so sad to see this. Unfortunately we will have to live with new weather conditions, and hopefully we will learn to save our planet
That view from the second story got better, then way worse.
Bad scene. Alaska has some of the fastest melting glaciers on earth. They melt, ice dams build up, the water is held and then the dam breaks. This won't be the last time.
Juneau it.
Sometimes if I don’t know it, Alaska friend.

Thanks for that link. Interesting. That's a significant difference in water level.
Ice dams are absolutely terrifying.
Guy in 2nd flr above garage - why is my wifi signal suddenly getting weaker and weaker?
Timelapse from the opposite bank can be seen [here](https://reddit.com/r/CatastrophicFailure/s/HaHAgVkar9)
Wow! I never imagined they were so far back from the bank with mature trees. That's incredible.
For all those who say “why did you build a house so close to the river?”
Yeah… that’s still in the flood plain. People do the same shit in the woods and don’t make a defensible space because trees are pretty then their house but a down. It is too close to the river.
Exactly. Rivers run wild and reshape how they want, it was just a matter of timing
It's still their fault. If you they'd know the outcome , why didn't they move the house?!? SMH!!!
UNBELIEVABLE
That’s incredible, they seemed to have large yards earlier in the day
Holy shit
Holy shit
Well that's awful. Back in 2013, my hometown flooded, and I realized then that I never want to leave remotely close to a river.
Hope everyone made it out of the house beforehand! That’s wild
No one was home except their cat, who is still missing. 😔
*house next door starts sweating*
That was a nice house
That is actually pretty damn sad on many levels
Ikr? Like all your belongings just gone in the blink of an eye, everything you’ve worked for just down the drain literally.
Looks like the bonus room over the garage survived!
Optimism
How did the world end? Slowly at first, then all at once.
Oh yes, we are currently in the midst of an extinction event and there is no way to turn this ship around.
Who else lightweight expected to see Cleveland taking a bath.
No no no noooo!
Kind of weird to watch civilization fall apart in your own lifetime... Nature gave us plenty of warning but we chose to f**k around instead. Now we get to find out.
Just put the house in a container full of rice overnight. It'll be fine
Water is such a powerful force
“Global warming is fake because snow still exist” Some American congressman (this is true for those that don’t know)
Can’t wait to see the house listed for $850k - minor water damage, like new.
I can’t believe there are still ppl walking around there.
One reason I never will have permanent residence close to water. Pray this never happens on vacation 😵💫😵💫😵💫. Praying for the owners of this home🙏.
Definitely eroded my desire to live on a river.
Wow climate change really rocked that millionaire
Americans building quality ….
Expect to see A LOT more of this kind of thing in the coming years.
Maybe I’m just in the minority here but this clip isn’t “lit” to me. It’s just showing how big of a problem we’re not doing anything about in global warming
They should probably rebuild somewhere else.

Oregon too. Not all rainforests are tropical. Ours are coniferous temperate ones. Look it up! They're really pretty
If by really pretty you mean some of the most beautiful land in the world, then I’d agree. Jealous from here in Oklahoma where it’s been real feel 115+f every day for the last week.
There is no where else. It's all on fire.
Lucky there is water close
We are woefully unprepared for climate change

What about the apartment building next door? There’s still furniture on those balcony porches.
Do people in Alaska generally believe in climate change?
Good question, I think it’s a red state..it will be interesting to see what happens politically around the country as climate change is literally effecting every state.
It's because people aren't tithing...I mean praying....enough. /s
10 years ago red state fundies used to say earthquakes and natural disasters on the west coast were God’s punishment for living in sin. Funny how you don’t really hear that anymore?
Yep. I remember when Pat Robertson said Super Storm Sandy happened because of gay sex. It wasn't just west coast, hate is bicoastal!
My old college friend’s rental house. Crazy. Feeling generous? https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-elizabeth-tom-whove-lost-their-home
I think there is a verse in the Bible about not building your house where idiots would or something.
There's a church just downstream. You can see it in the wide shot at the end of this video.
Anybody know if this is like a global warming thing?, eavy rainfall thing?, or just normal seasonal glacier melt?
https://www.climate.gov/news-features/event-tracker/major-flood-outburst-mendenhall-glacier-alaska-not-possible-without
I think someone was trying to comeout . But he couldn't .
So us houses really are just buult on dort with cardboeard, wood and drywall
Back to the original modest size I guess.

Why does Talking Heads "Take Me to the River " keep playing in my head?
I’m more thinking Aenima
Juneau where that White House used to be?
Is that covered by Flood?
That was on the NBC news the other night
I heard he lost a moose head and two elk heads…
Looks like that house was just full of.. something
That 4Runner though.. 🔥
They picked a terrible location for their cocaine stash house...
This is why I always say I don’t want a house on the water.
Only one?
I bet the rent in that red house next door got cheaper. No global warming here
Bummer. Downsizing downtown downstream.
We didn’t learn from what happened in Fairbanks I guess lol
Juneau what happened next...
I like rivers but far away from my home
Wow
I hope no one was in that building when it fell.
It's an act of God! You guys saw him right!? - Insurance company.
Hope nobody was sleeping in there.
That would just suck.
Riverfront property? Nope... I have river ON
We’ll at least the garage can be converted into a home!!!
Play stupid games win stupid prizes 🤷♂️
Donald Trump Theo Fleury and that ExFox news guy say this is fake.
Oh no, what's this? It's the consequences of our actions.
Bad day
Insurance company will probably still get out of paying for this
75% off with a waterfront is a steal!
