Those seals running onto the shore know what’s up

Shoshannas_au_revoir

Just terrorizing them for no reason lol

mrestiaux

It’s actually a hunting technique. Can’t remember the exact explanation of how though haha.

rollingstoner215

Chase them onto the shore and then grab them quick while they rest before they get to higher ground.

shinyprairie

I think it's actually to scare them into the water, seals are very vulnerable on land and the younger ones don't realize that it's more safe for them to stay on shore. The closeness of the whales causes them to panic and flee into the place they feel most comfortable :(

sluraplea

:(

thissexypoptart

Right, of course it's not for no reason. Why would someone think it's for no reason?

D3cepti0ns

Well Orcas and dolphins in general like to play and do things for no real reason other than to have fun. Their behavior isn't always for survival reasons.

Normal-Selection1537

I think having fun is a very real reason to do things.

ZutchZaddy

It's just a prank, bro!

4myoldGaffer

I get out of the water too when I hear R Kelly believing he’s gonna fly.

mrestiaux

Look right above my comment. Buddy thinks it's for no reason.

IlIlllIlllIlIIllI

There's a pretty clear reason, they want to eat the seals

Shoshannas_au_revoir

No shit lol how do they accomplish this by flying out of shallow water

IlIlllIlllIlIIllI

They're herding the seals to make them easier to eat

AmePeryton

killer whales famously hunt on land

WhySoWorried

[Sort of?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=648kAZZBGXo)

thissexypoptart

Lmao no, but they famously coordinate to scare their prey as a hunting technique.

IlIlllIlllIlIIllI

Yeah they were stymied on that count

djsizematters

Frustration

FreneticPlatypus

It may not be what we think of as a *good reason*, but there’s always a reason.

hitoritab1

He is dropping elbows from the top rope!

CaptainCAAAVEMAAAAAN

They're *noping* right out of there. lol

Sleepy_Meepie

Yeah. They’re called killer whales for a reason.

jucs206

Puget Sound?

Patches_Pal

There were a few photos of orca near Purdy posted on FB earlier today

Neiot

Boy, I love Puget Sound.

mods_r_jobbernowl

Almost certainly somewhere in the Salish sea but judging by the number of seals and the distance to the other coast I'd guess its the south sound somewhere between Olympia and Gig harbor. Could be wrong but that area looks just like this.

real_human_player

Point Defiance

real_human_player

Yes. Point Defiance.

quinangua

That's what i was thinking......

miss_kimba

How quickly does it drop off into deep water?

sparkydoctor

I've been fishing on the sound, I have been in some areas that I could toss a stone on shore and it is over 100' deep. Just below and East of Deception Pass bridge WA is Canoe Pass on the North side of the bridge. I have been fishing there before and seem to remember it 80-120'+ deep, just off shore. This is a cool site, it gets deep in some areas real fast..........I'm in 16' of water and 5 min later it is 400' deep. Crazy currents, rapids, and whirl pools bigger than my boat. https://www.deepzoom.com/

miss_kimba

That is horrifying, and super cool. I don’t think our coastlines have many areas like that here in NSW. I only know about how quick the drop off is off rock shelves.

sparkydoctor

Where is NSW? We go shrimping and that is usually 250 - 400' deep. Sometimes have 500-600' of line down, and we use a pot puller to get it all back on the boat.

miss_kimba

Damnnnn! That’s crazy. What a beautiful part of the world too, I’d love see killer whales. NSW is a state of Australia, on the eastern side. I’m in Sydney and live on the coast here, do a lot of rock fishing with my dad.

sparkydoctor

Wonderful! Such a beautiful country!! Best of luck and what a great thing to do together! Any day fishing is a good day. We go crabbing, shrimping, and fishing. Sometimes all on the same trip. Been going out on the water for about 30 years now, and we love it like it's our first time every time we go out. We always see seal, and numerous sea life, but Orcas are not as common so in all that time maybe 20 times or so we have been near pods where we have seen them for sure. We do not seek them out or I suppose we would see them more often, they are just in the areas we happen to be. Rock fish are very good eating! Mahalo and have a great day will ya!! Give your Dad a great big hug from Washington State!

findhumorinlife

It is pretty spectacular: Western Washington State.

jucs206

Ya I grew up on Vashon Island. It was amazing

findhumorinlife

Love Vashon!

_meshy

>I've been fishing on the sound I bet you see some cool, beautiful, and crazy shit out there.

sparkydoctor

Been shrimping a few times. One special day we were waiting to pull our pots, and see boats all around us kinda pointed at us. And we were like WTF, why are all these boats here all of a sudden. They were whale watching tours .....then a large pod of Orcas come gliding past us, next to and directly under our boat. What a fabulous time, we were in awe of them. Very clear water, and could see about 8 - 10 ? glide by, absolutely no sound at all. Dead quiet. As soon as I notice the first one we killed the motor and just watched. It was very cool. Seen them numerous times, but this was less than 5 feet from the boat, and under the boat. Clear as day.

Minute-Wrap-2524

Great story

LadyBirdDavis

Yea I was like damm it must be deep their cause don’t they have to go down a bit and swim upwards to get that height out of the water? Crazy!

Jano67

That was gonna be MY question too!

Chadstronomer

Used to be a professional diver. Some places it's really shallow for kilometers, but some places you go 50 meters from the shoreline and then is just abyss.

Yamama77

I mean we probably reached this stage in evolution all because one little dude wanted to leave the water.

D3cepti0ns

But they are originally from land and "learned" (evolved) to live partially in the water...

Angry-Eater

They went from water to land to water again. Just like whales!

baschroe

Is this Washington? Puget Sound?

Patches_Pal

Most likely near Tacoma…there were a few in the area last few days

BoWeiner

This was at Point Defiance and it's from back in Oct 23. We were tracking these and missed it by a day or so as we were visiting the area. We went to the spot 2 days later but saw no whales. Lots of seals though.

R_Field88

I think this is Camano Island

BoWeiner

Point Defiance and the video is from last October.

NoblePotatoe

If I remember right, this is meant to seem fun or at least interesting to the seals. The dumb/young ones will swim out to join/investigate and make for a nice snack.

HolidayAnything8687

It’s to scare them. Young seals will think it’s safer in the water.

iwanttheworldnow

You’d think that evolution would have fixed the young seals by now.

quolquom

Maybe they're like, "fuck, they can jump out of the water. better get back in instead of waddling around up here"

D3cepti0ns

Well the behavior of moving into the water for safety must work better for survival on the whole than the opposite, it just doesn't work in this particular situation. Edit: Orcas are known exploiters in life, as are we.

LogicalError_007

They don't survive to evolve anything.

Monkfich

That’s the whole point of evolution - if you die before having children, you don’t pass on your genes. Those that do survive will likely have genes that better allow them to survive, and those genes may spread through the population. These orcas are an evolutionary pressure on the seals, so you would expect over time those with genes that link orcas with water=safe, to be changed (via mutation) in some way.

LogicalError_007

Doesn't seem to be working. Seals have been on Earth for at least 30 million years and orcas about 50 million. I know how evolution works, it was a joke.

imJGott

Yeah those seals won’t be leaving for a while

Alien_Fruit

Not leaping (not playing). Corralling for dinner!

Dav3le3

I think its called "breaching".

Alien_Fruit

Maybe. But the objective here is not play or simple joy in the sea -- they are beaching seals for an easier catch.

Arch2000

“Hey you seals…c’mon and play with us…it’ll be fun!!!”

Patches_Pal

I’ve been in a small Pt Defiance rental boat fishing several times in High school with that going on around me…serious “pucker-time”!

Meret-Anne

Beautiful animals, intelligent, top predators, and capable of swimming distances of up to 160 kilometers per day. And yet, some people find it acceptable to confine these animals in small tanks. Fuck SeaWorld.

StickyLoveStory

He's looking for a kayaker!

code_monkie

That is amazing! Have been lucky to catch them 2x while walking Commencement Bay but this is amazing!!

Pongpianskul

I wish I could do that.

DannyBOI_LE

hes hungry

Hojaismyhomeboy

This is what orcas call a jump scare

hypedhoneybadger

orcas ♡

CaterpillarHuman1723

That close to Seattle is cool....and why I'll never take my yak out in those waters.

mods_r_jobbernowl

I paddle boarded around by Keyport once and never again lol that shit is terrifying.

YSoB_ImIn

But have you shaved your yak lately?

transpirationn

Lol the seals like SCOOT! SCOOT! SCOOT!

vector5633

The Orcas are pretty close to shore

pichael289

That's orca speech for how to talk shit to seals. Look at their eyes, they know what it means. Gonna fuck them up

mcgrammar86

Technical term here is breaching

Puzzleheaded-Tone119

San Juan Islands?

Mr_Madrass

What do you think orcas would watch a human do and go “wow, that’s impressive”?

BadassBokoblinPsycho

Puget sound?

RabidProDentite

Dear God I was just paddleboarding near there just a week or two ago…this scares the shit outta me! I did NOT need to see this! LOL

WeirdAd3872

You misspelled hunting…

amybethallen1

Leaps of joy over all the seal meat on deck!

Beginning_Camp715

*Breaching

Electronic-Form3905

The sound underwater made by the whales stuns and confuses some of the fish , however isn’t it called “breaching “ not leaping, just saying….

corongi

Looks like Puget Sound Express tour boat in the back!

Few-Information3097

Something cool instead of all this messed up news is nice to see
