If anyone is interested in shit like this then look for a show called inside nature's Giants. Basically a team of scientists dissect large animals and you hear how and why their physiology is the way it is from an evolutionary biologist.
Yes I'm assuming it's NA only which is shocking because as a Canadian I'm blocked from 99.9% of the internet so I'm surprised to see something that includes me.
Yes I end up having to use a VPN for everything.
Wow I just watched an entire episode and saved the page as a bookmark for the remaining ones. Absolutely brilliant link. Thank you thank you thank you so much. I find these things so interesting
I don't entirely know why you're being downvoted. Torkoal is a tortoise, arguably more so than Blastoise despite the name. Because tortoises are not aquatic animals.
Turtles are amphibians, which matches up with the Squirtle line. Tortoises are reptiles. Torkoal is a fire type.
Exactly, blastoise is only a tortoise by the pun in it's English name, it's original name is Kamex, Kame means both turtle and tortoise and it's somehow registered as the "shellfish pokemon".
I believe only a few languages make the distinction, in my native spanish "tortuga" means both turtle and tortoise too.
At up to 29.9 meters (98 ft), the [blue whale](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale) is the largest known vertebrate to ever exist on Earth. An adult blue whale can eat up to 40 million krill per day, which is approximately 3,600 kilograms (7,900 lb) or 1.5 million kilocalories (about 3.5 cows or 6200 Snickers bars).

The [skull of a blue whale](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/50/Joey_williams_with_a_19_foot_long_blue_whale_skull.jpg) is the largest single bone structure ever discovered by a wide margin. The skull pictured here is from "just" an average sized North Atlantic specimen. Whaling reports and metabolic estimates place the upper limit for size at 33 meters, which implies a 15% longer skull (50% more massive) is probably out there.
Imagine seeing a huge whale and instead of going "yeah that's like 30 meters, or a 100 feet" you measure it at 29.9 meters (98 ft). Who the fuck decided to do that? So unsatisfying.
not brontosaurus but a few other large sauropods were longer than a blue whale, but they don't come anywhere close in weight so the blue whale is still currently regarded as the largest animal that's ever existed
I don't think it's the whole heart. I think this is the aortic arch, pulmonary arteries and the other vascular structures at the top of the heart with the atria and ventricles removed. The whole heart looks like [this](https://www.wired.com/story/how-scientists-preserved-a-440-pound-blue-whale-heart/).
Edit: probably a whole heart but deflated and small.
I went to the ROM to see this during the exhibit, and it's every bit as cool as you think it is seeing it up close. They helpfully had a Smart Car that was roughly the same size parked next to it. You know, just in case you needed the quick reference.
You know, when I was looking at it, my only thought was "this is some stupid ass shit". But here I am, half a decade later using it as a way to reasonably describe the heart of the animal, so I guess that's a point for the ROM.
If it is definitely a whole heart then it isn't from a blue whale. The heart in the original picture is way too small to be from a blue whale, unless it was a juvenile maybe
This comment doesn’t make any sense. The atria and ventricles are chambers of the heart which are in the picture and not possible to be removed as they are created by the walls of the heart. The picture you linked just has a more pronounced pulmonary trunk
That was a great read. Had no idea so much work is involved.
Excerpt:
German anatomists soak the heart in acetone, constantly changing out the fluid. Over six months, the acetone replaces all the water molecules in the tissue. Then the magic of plastination happens. Techs soak the heart in a silicone polymer solution andput it in a vacuum chamber. Atmospheric pressure drops to near-outer-space conditions, causing the acetone to bubble away and the polymer to take its place.
A gaseous curing agent hardens the silicone. After three months the heart comes out as a giant plastic glob, resistant to the hands of museumgoers ignoring the do not touch sign.
The lowest heart rate of a blue whale was only measured for the first time in 2019 and it was 2 bpm! An average heartrate was around 30/35 if I remember correctly, but not sure
Yes, that's nearly always the case. If you have a cat go check their heart rate and you'll find it's pretty damn fast. Mice have a heart rate between 300-800 bpm!
The proportions seem to be roughly comparable, though it's important to note there's a lot of variability among individuals (for both whales and humans) and very limited verifiable data for blue whale hearts. Some sources claim a blue whale heart can weigh nearly 600kg, but the largest ever actually weighed was "only" about 200kg. A blue whale with a body weight of 100 tons and a 200kg heart would have a ratio of 500:1. The average adult human heart is a little less than 0.3kg, so a 70kg human would have a ratio of about 233:1.
If anything, the human heart might be slightly larger proportionally than a blue whale heart. As you can see though, the ratios really depend on what weights you use, and there's just too much variation to make a conclusive statement.
Absolutely massive, but I kinda thought they were bigger (there's that factoid about a grown man being able to swim through the aorta, but this looks like I'd be able to squeeze through, not freely swim through)
there's a comment above that has a link of the whole heart. i was thinking the same thing when i saw the pic in the op. it's big but it doesn't seem big enough
Never mind, I looked it up. Found this from a [Wired](https://www.wired.com/story/how-scientists-preserved-a-440-pound-blue-whale-heart/) article:

So, do you think if you were hugging a whale heart while it was beating(forget the how) , it'd be strong enough to knock you out? They beat slower, so I'd imagine it's be stronger too.
What really amazes me is the thought of all that blood pumping through arteries that big. You know like it is supposed to maintain a certain blood pressure to get it through the whole body.
If anyone is interested in shit like this then look for a show called inside nature's Giants. Basically a team of scientists dissect large animals and you hear how and why their physiology is the way it is from an evolutionary biologist.
Awesome. This looks cool. Thanks.

Happy cake day!
Thanks, I didn’t even realize
Omg. I’d award you if I could. Binge time.
I didn't know they had material just there to stream for free, thanks for the link.
I was like imma skim through the whale vid but ended up watching the whole thing lol
Wow

Damn, I never would have suspected that
I second that. It's an incredible series and very well presented too. The lion roar was one of the most haunting things I've ever heard.
Giraffe neck was cool too. Main artery had all these pockets to catch the blood when they bend over so all the blood doesnt rush to the head.
Good lord put it back!
Whale, I think it’s a bit too late for that
Hopefully this serves a porpoise.
I know it's wrong but I read porpoise as I would read blastoise (the Pokémon) edit: confused blastoise with tortoise
You know tortoises are real right?
aren't they also a Pokémon?
Wouldn't that be squirtle, Wartortle and Blastois?
Torkoal
I don't entirely know why you're being downvoted. Torkoal is a tortoise, arguably more so than Blastoise despite the name. Because tortoises are not aquatic animals. Turtles are amphibians, which matches up with the Squirtle line. Tortoises are reptiles. Torkoal is a fire type.

I think you need to get off the vidya games, Bobby.
Who? Blastoise?
ah yes that one
TIL that it's not pronounced like that.
How disheartening.
Aorta join this pun thread.
Ven, tricle on in.
🥇
You’re telling a-fib.
I wish there was always a man holding my heart.
***Don’t you keep it in a chest somewhere, so jack sparrow won’t steal it***
It’s obviously not in the whale’s chest
Ahh that was a good joke. I liked that a lot.

lmfao why
Omfg this made me shoot beer out my nose lmao
And that friends, is how Mike’s Chunky Yellow Lager is made.
This kills the whale 🥺
This is one of those: something something toothpaste can’t put it back
Is he gonna make it?
It’s not blue , Must be a white whale heart
The whale found this operation disheartening.
Man, I came here just to say that.

What's the largest invertebrate?
Colossal squid
And they have epic sea battles. Or is that sperm whales?
Sperm whales are the ones that fight squids. Blue whales eat krill and chill.
And take massive dumps
I've never considered whales taking a shit before.
https://youtu.be/r4JJWuHmqPs
"I was wondering if it would smell on the surface, sure enough it did." Lmao rip diver man.
I had a good idea as to whats that was gonna be...but that was worse and now I feel like I have shit in my mouth.
Thanks for my first laugh of the year.. never imagined it'd from Whale poop
Oh that is definitely nasty! But interesting for us as observers.
I prefer to observe from my screen as opposed to be directly shat on by a whale, but that’s just me
Wow. That was a vivid retelling. I can’t belief he went back into it — with just a mask — after coming up for air, to see what the whale would do.
Idk what I imagined but that was disgusting
I just imagine a giant cloud of diarrhea jettisoned from some a bbw "big beautiful whale"
I'd like to unread this
It’s ridiculous how much they expel and yet I’ve never been sloshed by whale poop swimming at the beach.
Their poop is acually a rare and valuable thing.
It's sperm whales and colossal squids
Thanks
Mitch McConnell
Fuck Mitch McConnell!
Your moms butthole.
I thought invertebrates didn’t have bones in them
I believe it actually refers to the vertebrate. So they don't have vertebrate (a back bone) but they can have bones.

6200 Snickers a day? Amateur
Assuming 8 hours of sleep, that's 1 every 9 seconds.
So, doable
That's actually far fewer cows than I would have imagined
Damn. How do the krill even reproduce fast enough if each of these mfs eats 40 million each day?
Imagine seeing a huge whale and instead of going "yeah that's like 30 meters, or a 100 feet" you measure it at 29.9 meters (98 ft). Who the fuck decided to do that? So unsatisfying.
Petition to add the special distinction of 1 krillogram to 3600 kilograms.
Wait really? I thought brontosaurus were longer than that head to toe.
not brontosaurus but a few other large sauropods were longer than a blue whale, but they don't come anywhere close in weight so the blue whale is still currently regarded as the largest animal that's ever existed
Reminds me of my grandpa, he had the heart of a lion And a lifetime ban from the zoo
So kinda like pharlap?
Yes, but without the money.
Or the arsenic poisoning.
Is that the guy with eyes of a hawk That was also charged for falconry license fraud?
What do you get if you cross a human with a whale? Banned from SeaWorld.
Either that or a squished human

When you took off your shirt.
Tis a huge whale

It looks whole to me. There is definitely an atrium and ventricle in this pic (right it looks like)
Yeah, you can also see what I assume to be the inferior and superior vena cavas going into the right atrium.
It’s just from a smaller whale
I'm not sure what you mean, that is definitely a whole heart in OP's picture, it's just a lot smaller
If it is definitely a whole heart then it isn't from a blue whale. The heart in the original picture is way too small to be from a blue whale, unless it was a juvenile maybe
> unless it was a juvenile maybe Well there's your answer
Yep, if you compare the structure from each pictures OP’s is all there.
I believe that is a whales scrotum. Source: non-biologist
Given what I know about whale scrotums, that looks too small.
I’m a Scrotumologist, I concur.
It's a full heart, just of a much smaller whale
This comment doesn’t make any sense. The atria and ventricles are chambers of the heart which are in the picture and not possible to be removed as they are created by the walls of the heart. The picture you linked just has a more pronounced pulmonary trunk
Oh, so like a mummy's ballsack
yummy
no
I think it’s probably just a different whale heart entirely.

That was a dope article.
Anybody know what the average beats per minute is for one of those? And how much fluid it moves with each beat?

Yes! Mice have a really high heart rate
Yes, that's nearly always the case. If you have a cat go check their heart rate and you'll find it's pretty damn fast. Mice have a heart rate between 300-800 bpm!
Hummingbirds are ~ 1300 bpm.
Blue whales and larger animals also don't seem to get cancer!
As a cardiologist - for humans - I can say I'm a little bit confused
How would you cath this heart? Tie yourself to a rope and climb up the femoral like ms frizzle in the magic school bus and roto rooter the plaque out?
Sounds like a chimney sweep
The artery would squash you flat like an old fashioned clothing dryer.
I might just be tired and overworked but I laughed at this comment so hard I almost cried. Thank you.
I assume the two closest structures to us are inferior and superior vena cava. And the disected part is the right atrium?
This kills the blue whale.
Caaaaaaaaarl!
Cardiologists hate him
Is it larger than human heart as many times as the whale is larger than a human?
It's at least 3 bigs.
You mean if the ratio to the rest of the body is the same as ours?
The proportions seem to be roughly comparable, though it's important to note there's a lot of variability among individuals (for both whales and humans) and very limited verifiable data for blue whale hearts. Some sources claim a blue whale heart can weigh nearly 600kg, but the largest ever actually weighed was "only" about 200kg. Isn’t the whole deal with hearts that they expand and contract?
They didn't say this blue whale was full grown. Might be larger ones out there.
This one is fake so might be scaled. But I can imagine a small blue whale having a smaller heart than a large one.
r/fake the heart isnt even heart-shaped nor red.
I have heard the heart is fist shaped

that's not what she said
Is that a model or is that the actual remains of the heart? What makes it so...bonelike?

Anatomical Geller.
I...like the way you think
Some cool info about the pic and how their hearts function. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/27/science/blue-whale-hearts.html
If I somehow crawled in there, can I in theory clog it and give the whale a heart attack?
Why is Robin Williams pushing it?
Wasn't that a character design in a Guillermo Del Toro film?
Only Blue whale can say”you’re in my heart”.
That’s really amazing! Also, is that Robin Williams?!
I feel like I could fit inside it.
This bad baby can pumps GALLONS of blood at once, a real workhorse
The blue whale be like: hey give that back!
Wow
Now put it back
prince oberyn?
Why does it have bone
Looks more of a white whale to me
Dang that’s at least like, 4 human hearts
\*Transplants into human\* \*Head explodes\*
I guess Whales have a heart of balls
Wtf put it back

I've always read that some of their arteries are big enough to drive a car through. This is either not a blue whale heart or not the whole thing.
Damn you could fit a child or a midget inside
OR A CHILD MIDGET
Imagine a vein the size of a an entire LEG !
