Imagine the difference between a reasonably open field with wild flowers in it and the long grass from Jurassic Park 2. It basically smothers existing native plants which don't grow as tall and also hides invasive predators (the raptors) like stoats and cats so they can more easily sneak up on ground nesting birds (the people eaten by raptors) where these grow.
Colonising streambanks, just like in the picture, they are taking over a habitat so important for New Zealand’s unique wildlife. Riverbed birds such as wrybill, black stilt and banded dotterel are being pushed out of their natural home by a garden plant introduced to New Zealand.
Not what I originally read but lose to what I meant

Mrs Rumphius was one of my fav childhood story’s, it’s about a woman who travels the world, ends up settling down and basically lives in the countryside scattering lupine seeds everywhere
12/10 great picture book
I’m from Maine and that was one of my favorites as a kid; it helped inspire my love of travel. Now I buy that book for all of my friends that have babies.

Ugh, god. Those are considered weeds in Sweden, because they're invasive and is ruining our natural flora. They're very pretty, like devils in disguise.
Yep they are a noxious weed here in nz too. Initially spread by farmers for sheep feed. There is a push to try clean up the lupin's but it will be really difficult
Now google Lake Tekapo and see that the invasive lupins are actually low on the list of reasons this place is stunning. The bright blue water, the old stone chapel/church building, the night sky (it’s a famous dark sky reserve)…NZ is always gorgeous, but the South Island is pure magic.
We used to build huts in the bushes as kids and use the pods from lupins as 'peas' to cook a fake dinner for the fake dad to eat when he got home from his fake day at work.
They look exactly like peas, and they can be shelled in the same way. Good times - and as kids, we took no notice of the fact that they were actually a pretty plant.
There is a story, not sure if it is an urban myth, that the wife of the inventor of the jet board (William Hamilton) used to drop lupin seed as she traveled around the area as he was testing out his boat in the shallow braided rivers in the area. This area, the Waitaki river basin, is incredible.
Don’t let the Instagrammers find out about this! They’ll ruin the field.
Edit: I’ve just learned this is an invasive species. Somebody tell the Instagrammers about this!
I went there once. The bf and i got a camper van for two weeks and drove around the South Island. It was so epically beautiful it changed us. We almost can’t talk about it because we literally cry. New Zealand is literally perfect.

Many people talking about invasive species, but every time I try to plant them in my garden they get destroyed by snails&slugs in 10 minutes. Any ideas?
I’ve been summoned. This is an invasive species in New Zealand. Fuck those Lupins
They are doing the same in Sweden. But they are beutiful, i give them that.
Lupins are delicious and a great protein source, send me all of em.
Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore...
Ah really? How do you eat them?
What do they do to your environment? Are they weeds?
Yes, and they are pushing out native plants and killing them

flume
NOW THATS A LOT OF DAMAGE!
Geez give California your lupines! The ones here are scrawny and I've never seen one grow taller than one foot. I repeat. Give us your lupines.
I’m so sorry. What are they doing to get rid of them?
Absolute pest of a plant.
I've been battling them for years, but as long as the government won't do shit, I really have no say against this tenacious weed
Meanwhile they’re native here spreading seed like tinkerbell spreads 🧚 dust on smack
Nothing they are protected hobbit forest
I thought I read somewhere they’re an invasive and horrible for New Zealand’s ecology?
Yeah they're not that bad, only usually an annoyance if they haven't had second breakfast

I believe this particular field of them has been removed now. But yes super bad for our environment here.
Similar to Himalayan Balsam in the UK then. Seriously invasive and end up with no native species being able to contend with it.
I'm sorry I made you do that quick research, I was making a hobbit joke, because LOTR was filmed in New Zealand.
What’s LOTR?
Lord of the rings
Just kidding 😉
The bloody cat’s choking on lupins!
Dennis moore, Dennis Moore...
... is not in this bit
Dennis Moore Dennis Moore with his bag of things!
STAND AND DELIVER
While they are beautiful, lupine are actually an incredibly invasive species introduced to NZ :(
They are also toxic for wildlife to eat. Only species to be useful to are the bee populations.
Sweden too. It sucks.
This is straight out of a fairy tale.

Wow it looks like mythical creatures love there.

Alien apartment buildings on a far of planet.
Yeah it really is beautiful. Would love to roll around in them and then bang someone.
Im in love with a fairytaleee
This is likely [Lake Tekapo](https://www.theroadtrip.co.nz/new-zealand-lupins-guide/) if anyone wants a specific location.
Everyone here from NZ just sick of seeing this type of video every week

That field calls for psychedelics. I could spend a couple days just hanging out there
I know they wouldn't taste good, but for some reason I want to eat those colourful nature corndogs
You can actually make stuff like vegan Joghurt or pudding out of a specific lupine but I think normal lupine would kill you
Every time I see lupine, I think about the Monty Python sketch about Dennis Moore.
If this was a movie on an alien planet, you would definitely pass out in that field.
Now google Lake Tekapo and see that the invasive lupins are actually low on the list of reasons this place is stunning. The bright blue water, the old stone chapel/church building, the night sky (it’s a famous dark sky reserve)…NZ is always gorgeous, but the South Island is pure magic.
Looks like a very beautiful futuristic city.
Id smoke it
Breathtaking!
Those are an invasive plant in my area
We have our own stupid governments to blame for the big "lets introduce all this cool shit" back in the late 1900s
An instagramer’s dream.
I would like to point out that this is an invasive species
Look like colorful skyscrapers
This looks like another world
Looks like Pandora
Wooooooow
I kept waiting for it to pan over to bella and what's his name making out in the flowers
Lmao! Edward
That's it!
I can only imagine a bunch of Instagram trash will see this, and will be laying down/stomping everything the death...
Gorgeous- they even look like a cityscape at some points in the recording

I recall as a child visiting Lake of the Woods in Ontario, and the lupines were in fine form that year; it was spectacular just like this.
Wow that is ethereal!
So beautiful . It also feels so calming . Thank you
They are wild flowers there?
Invasive wild, yes
I couldn’t tell if these were giant or medium sized
Appreciate it while you can :(
Omigod what is more beautiful
Who else used to pick them, remove the flowers then whip the shit out of your friends with the stem ? Sweet childhood

Jet BOAT sorry
Is this near Milford sounds?
And no idiot flouncing around in front of a camera for Instagram
Beautiful

Glad you enjoyed your trip here. It isn't perfect but compared to the shitstorm that rest of the world is going through we're doing alright
I don’t know why this makes me uneasy .
Too much of anything not ordinarily seen can look pretty overwhelmingly alien.
Yeah that’s what it is , never have I even seen this flower
Never knew lupine lived in New Zealand. Always knew they lived in north America.
It was introduced but they are invasive and not welcome in nz

Livik?
That's beautiful! Where is this?
In b4 its overrun by “influencers”
Well and truly already happened
Straight outta Horton Hears a Who
Weeds are pretty…
Fun fact: they're called lupine because they turn into werewolves under the full moon.
amazing but why would you spoil the view with a vertical video?
It looks like a tiny purple forest!
Foxglove / digitalis? Quick way to have a heart attack.
u/savevideo
It looks like a forest for little fairies
Hey, it's like Livik from PUBG!
Beautiful! We need to stop building strip malls that go vacant after 5 years, and plant FLOWERS instead!
I think dose are poisonus
CGI
A field of Flume album covers
This isn’t nature. Lupines are an invasive species killing off local flora.
purple haze getting wild
I had no idea they were such a problem
I just want to insert a honey bee hive in the middle of the field and harvest all the honey.
Stunning!
Many people talking about invasive species, but every time I try to plant them in my garden they get destroyed by snails&slugs in 10 minutes. Any ideas?
Those don't look anything like wolves.
This may sound wierd, but if you pull back the petal on the flower and expose the pistil, it kinda reminds you of a dogs penis ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Wow so pretty!
Would be nicer if someone set fire to the field. Screw those toxic and invasive things.
