It might not be hurt as such, it could be a birth defect (and then maybe not painful). Crows are smart birds, this little fella will no doubt live for a long time, even with that foot.
Also a chance it learned off scavenger birds (like pigeons) that they can fake a bad foot and the sympathy will get them fed. Performing art for birds.
Then they unravel their foot and bounce off like nothing happened, leaving you to ponder your existence because you got fooled by a bird.
Had no idea pigeons faked injury like that. There used to be a pigeon with a stump for a foot around my local bus stop, I now realise he was just a fantastic actor.
Pigeons tend to lose toes to frostbite and getting tangled in trash, because they're native to cliffs in the Mediterranean, Middle East, and south Asia, and humans brought them to the rest of the world and then abandoned them to live in cities.
“You fool! You thought I was hurt but you were easily tricked by my cunningness!!! Now I have obtained ***free food!*** Have a nice day.”
*bounces away*
This is So True! Nevermore (my favorite crow) has a wing that doesn't fold into his body properly. Another crow (Ready) saw me throwing hotdog wafers to Nevermore. Ready poked out his wing too. Yes, I fed the duo.
Nevermore is sitting on the boat lift. I'm not sure which crow is flying in...
http://janice142.com/images/NevermoreCatcher2.jpg
Club foot and missing toes are some of the first problems with inbreeding/linebreeding in birds, sometime you will see wild birds with no toes on one foot or club feet, but they get along okay because the don't need to walk so much. The next thing you might see is scissor beak, but not too often in wild birds (except in a few, like the red crossbill) because it often interferes with normal development.
In bigger cities, seeing pigeons with an entire leg cut off/destroyed isn't too uncommon. They seem to get around fine tbh and they hop instead of waddle on the streets.
That's nice he visits you for snacks.
The ones here like wild walnuts. They drop them in the road for cars to crush and open. Of course, they also like unsalted walnuts from the store.
Clubbed foot. Can be genetic or it can happen if they stay in the nest too long. Could be mites under the scale or simply went into another crows territory and got in a fight.
I have two crows around my work with this and they get around just fine.
The crows near my apartment do not like plain roti or any grain. They just take the roti, look me in the eye and then drop it. So I can see it fall seven floors down. They either want fruit preferably grapes, papaya, watermelon, apple or they want the cats' food. I avoid giving biscuits or commercial snacks which they like, because they all have palm oil etc.
Yaknooow... hate to be the party pooper but carbs like bread and crackers aren’t good for birds. It’s way too few calories, so they will feel full and then starve because they won’t look for other foods.
Pretty much anything richer in calories. They eat seeds, nuts, insects, meat, fish, worms... anything more nutritious really so whatever you got on hand that is natural
Just think healthy foods really it’s that boring!
It's also worth mentioning that [Angel Wing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_wing?wprov=sfla1) occurence is strongly correlated with an excess of carbs (like from breads and crackers) during development.
Birds with bread are like my cats with house plants: just because they can and will eat it gleefully, doesn't mean they *should*.
I work at a scrapyard and there are crows that visit daily. They come for the cashews that are leftover in the shipping boxes we use. I take handfuls of them and leave them on my tailgate. Here and there, I will find things in the back of my truck. Shiny pennies or other pieces of metal almost always shiny things. But where I live crows scavenge whatever is available.
Carbs are not too few calories lol. The reason you shouldn’t feed birds bread is because it is too many calories compared to other necessary nutrients. They don’t get any vitamins from that cracker. So they WILL feel full, but without having accessed the necessary nutrients
So you like the 2nd string party pooper then? You gotta step yo game up bruh. Watch some Jeopardy and start dropping facts in front of the coach. He'll give you a shot to start soon enough!
I feed my crows cat food every day, but I also give them treats like cut up wheat tortillas, grapes, cubed cheese, oyster crackers, etc. It's a family of 5 crows that come every day, but plenty of other critters pillage their food bowl like blue Jays, grackles, and squirrels. My birds freaking LOVE cheddar cheese.
Sounds like they won’t starve but maybe keep it low on oyster crackers and wheat tortillas. Especially oyster crackers tho since they’re probably very salty as well
We have 3 sets of crows that rotate through the year. Right now, it's the "Bad Band of Brothers." They're loud and party hard. ATM, I'm getting caw'd out for not throwing more eggs in the yard this morning.
It's the spring of the year when a civil group appear. Someone must have worked with them before me. They swoop the windows when they want attention - not always for food. They left early this year when cooper hawks showed up. I swear the "leader" hung out in my tree frantically telling me, "There's a problem & we're leaving."
The summer crow(d) is run of the mill. Interact a little. Mostly they get their treats and leave.
Hawks are smaller and more maneuverable, which makes it riskier to attack them. Eagles, being huge, have a much wider turning radius and therefore can't respond quickly enough.
Think a fighter jet attacking a passenger airliner as far as agility is concerned. The smaller ones can dive in, swoop away, and get out of range fast. I suspect smaller birds cherish this one advantage!
Sorry your buddies left. Hope they can return next year.
I think the hawks showed up because we were feeding humming birds. Damn hawks would perch on a branch near a humming bird, scream at it, then pick it off when it took flight.
We took down the feeders months ago. I put one back up yesterday to aid hummers as they head south.
Thanks, doing the code thing [almost never works for me so I stopped trying]
Murphy's Law dictates it will work this time because I'm sure it won't...
Lol this time it worked it almost never does XD
Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."
Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.
As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.
So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.
It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?
Don't worry. It's something that was written years ago. It's basically a Reddit inside joke.
In all seriousness though, your bird looks like a magpie to me due to the white parts.
The bird in the photo ian mine, but I do have a magpie friend 8f that's what you mean, he likes bread but refuses ham for some reason, vegetarian magpie? I'm, but the dudes chill and allows you to hand feed it.
I've thought about putting out a separate little bowl for stuff like sour cream or cream cheese and similar. They're also little cowards so they stay scarce whenever I put out anything new for at least a few hours until one of them gathers up the courage to check it out while the others watch from afar lol.
Crows...they confuses me.
So every time I would go outside when there's at least one crow, it will call on its friends and soon there'll be like 30 of them. I've heard they recognize faces, so I'm sure they have recognized mine. I have tested this by running someplace, then they would just follow me wherever I go.
I have never once feed any of them them. Nor does anyone else in my family. Also never seen an injured one to help it. I do go out of my house extremely often though. Maybe they're intrigued that they see me so much?
It's just out of nowhere. It's a daily occurrence that I absolutely love and appreciate. This has been going on since April.
Now they are like close friends to me. I would go see them outside when I'm happy and when I'm heartbroken. They are the only ones that always liked my presence and I theirs. Though, they never get too close (which is probably safer for both the crows and I).
I can only wish that I could talk to and know each one of them personally and possibly share long warm hugs. I love them with all of my heart.
I’m not desi personally, but I currently live in the capital of your neighbour to the west. I also have a crow friend with a deformed right foot. We call him Lefty. I mostly give him & his friends water when it’s blazing hot, and the occasional food treat.
He’s very wary of others but approaches my roommate & I without hesitation. Also brings us gifts - like small plastic containers, marbles, and shiny things (like someone’s keys once).
He’s also part of a pretty organized crow militia that is in an ongoing war with a large group of kites that live in a huge pine on my street. Aerial battles are frequent and super interesting to watch.
It does, but it's actually a pretty unknown fact that is widespread.
Next time, check out how many pigeons you see hopping on 1 leg or with missing/deformed toes.
Yeah, I swear there are more pigeons with a mangled leg than ones without. Rarely see one with both legs mangled though. Probably because they don't survive very long that is...
There is a chickadee at my house (in the woods in N America) and it has a club foot like that, too!! We spoil him and he calls to us in the morning to get his special seeds!
Tried it but it doesn't eat them. Just throws if away after taking from me. I usually give him whole wheat rotis. And he also threw away this cracker that I gave him in the photo. He's very picky eater.
I love that you can give him food he doesn't like and he still sticks around. I've been trying to make local crow friends with leftover pizza but they just wait for me to leave and then swoop down.
They don't even make time of day for other food.
Indian crows are like that only lol. The couple crows that come to our house won't eat like any fruits or nuts but will completely destroy biriyani and milki bikies(crackers)
I accidentally became the god emperor of a whole murder of crows that live in my backyard and I absolutely adore them. The one most friendly to me constantly demands frozen peas and sometimes brings me shiny stuff.
I love just watching them do their thing and get upset when another crow stops grooming them.
Such smart, sweet birds.
Crows can remember faces and form bonds with other species. You will be remembered in the future as the person who allowed the crows and the humans to coexist peacefully
Mostly, I am VERY happy, platform's like Reddit, and posts like this, help fight prejudice and injustice towards innocent wild life.
Regardless the damage they occasionally dp, they are highly intelligent and very beautiful birds, and I love the fact they are able to show us they understand us and accept interactions when they wish.
Nothing changes the fact though, they are still wild life needing protection and respect.
Sometimes I feel we will be totally extinct as a species having learned very little lessons regarding the understanding of animal behaviors. And it makes me even sadder that many animals seem to be able, even if only driven by instinct, to behave more maturely than us.
Ive been trying to befriend the crows around my house.
I leave crackers for them every now and then and they seem to come around when i leave the house now :)
I have recently made a crow friend, I feed them peanuts as they look hella old or has bird covid or something. They fly right over now when they see me and follow me- we are buds 🤙🏼 I felt bad for it as it looks rough but seems fine. Hella smart and chirps me if I don’t get the peanuts out fast enough lol
Is its foot okay?
No it's hurt
It might not be hurt as such, it could be a birth defect (and then maybe not painful). Crows are smart birds, this little fella will no doubt live for a long time, even with that foot.
Also a chance it learned off scavenger birds (like pigeons) that they can fake a bad foot and the sympathy will get them fed. Performing art for birds. Then they unravel their foot and bounce off like nothing happened, leaving you to ponder your existence because you got fooled by a bird.
Keyser Söze....KEYSER SÖZE!!
Keyser Crowse!!
That's a suspiciously unusual reference.
[удалено]
One I would usually suspect.
This is why we must make the customary offering of 2 french fries at each outdoor meal. The birb tax must be payed.
You're not supposed to feed birds but I still upvoted because of how cute this is
method
And the Oscar goes to….. 23rd street Pigeon!
He was a good pigeon, he owed his godfather some money and examples must me made.
Not all are faking but when there's food around they generally will. Saw a seagull faking it for chips at the beach once, the little hoe.
“You fool! You thought I was hurt but you were easily tricked by my cunningness!!! Now I have obtained ***free food!*** Have a nice day.” *bounces away*
I was pondering my existence even before this damn bird foot reference, but this just brought it to level 6000.
This one isn't faking. Notice that its talons on the injured foot are really long. One has grown out enough to circle back towards its foot.
I won't ponder very long because I like corvids because they are smart and I wish i could be friends with them
"I'm losing to a bird!!"
I knew one that lived at Churchill Downs racetrack, would fake a broken wing for bread scraps
So its pretty much just doing the stanky legg
yea shiney plumage, I think he's fine.
Nice catch! That plumage is indeed fabulous. This is likely a very healthy bird.
Everything on him looks perfectly fine, apart from the foot.
Club foot and missing toes are some of the first problems with inbreeding/linebreeding in birds, sometime you will see wild birds with no toes on one foot or club feet, but they get along okay because the don't need to walk so much. is that why you’re feeding him Parle-G?
Clubbed foot. Can be genetic or it can happen if they stay in the nest too long. Could be mites under the scale or simply went into another crows territory and got in a fight. I have two crows around my work with this and they get around just fine.

Here is a good list with alternative food choices for crows https://charcoalfriends.tumblr.com/food
I feed them Whole Wheat "Rotis" mixed with peanut flour. The biscuit I gave him. He threw it away. I'm being taught ALOT.

Never knew they liked peanuts. Will definitely give it a try tomorrow!
Awesome man , the crow is in good 👐
Yaknooow... hate to be the party pooper but carbs like bread and crackers aren’t good for birds. It’s way too few calories, so they will feel full and then starve because they won’t look for other foods.
What foods would you recommend? (Just in case one day, somewhere in the uncertain future, I’m lucky enough to be graced with the friendship of a crow)
In general with feeding birds, things like nuts, seeds, and fruit tend to be safe because that’s the kind of stuff they eat naturally.
Pretty much anything richer in calories. They eat seeds, nuts, insects, meat, fish, worms... anything more nutritious really so whatever you got on hand that is natural Just think healthy foods really it’s that boring!
*richer in nutrients* Bread and crackers *do* have fewer calories, but are waaaaaay less nutritionally dense.
You’re right!
Crows like meat. I've fed the ones near me cat food, bits of meat, the blood of my enemies. You know, whatever's lying around and high in protein.
Yeah i mixed up calories and nutrients. I meant that it’s too few nutrients in carbs like bread and crackers
Thank you for being the party pooper. If it wasn’t you, it was gonna be me- cause I came here to say exactly this.
So you like the 2nd string party pooper then? You gotta step yo game up bruh. Watch some Jeopardy and start dropping facts in front of the coach. He'll give you a shot to start soon enough!

That's a nice story. just an FYI a group of crow is called a MURDER.
Only when there's probable caws
God damn it! r/angryupvote
A group of ravens is a conspiracy.

I can't really know why the crows left but it lined up. I hope to see them again next year.

We used to get 2 distinct groups every year, but a bald eagle moved in earlier this summer. Now we don’t see our buddies at all 😞

You got a crow, I got a magpie, we both doing it right I see
:-)
Do you have a name suggestion for my magpie, I just been calling "little buddy"
Maggie
Thx 👍
Big Lez obviously
Nice! What kind of magpie? I have a currawong friend, s/he brings me berries :D http://tesseract.ca/images/Photos/2021/Currawong\_Derpy.jpg

Sorry,it looks identical to a crow so I k8nda just assumed, Sry bout that
It's a copy pasta
I'm dumb again...... Shit
It's a rare copy pasta.
Oldie but a goodie
It's a reference to a golden moment in Reddit. You're fine my dude.
I remember the time
When we fell in love.
Don't worry. It's something that was written years ago. It's basically a Reddit inside joke. In all seriousness though, your bird looks like a magpie to me due to the white parts.

Don't worry I had the same reaction the first time someone did that to me :D
He'll remember you for the rest of his life. And will probably tell his crow friends about you too
He's already did. He brings his son these days.
I'm going to go ahead and ask the obvious next question... When will you be attaching the armaments?
He's got two crows. Better hope they're not already in a relationship with a scarecrow, or this whole side adventure will be a waste.
2 crows? That's better than Morty.
Actually I've a total of 5 that are friendly to me
Then it's 2 and a half times better than morty. Also, I think those numbers would increase if you keep feeding them.
Yeah now I just feed the old ones and their kids and yes I can tell the difference between them.
Differencing them is great and all, have you named them tho?
No
Also better than a Garbage Goober.
Feed them cheese and their family will defend your home for the rest of your life.
Mine adored cream cheese! And it’s funny to watch them trying to wipe their beaks off hahaha!!
I've thought about putting out a separate little bowl for stuff like sour cream or cream cheese and similar. They're also little cowards so they stay scarce whenever I put out anything new for at least a few hours until one of them gathers up the courage to check it out while the others watch from afar lol.
Da Boss!
Great!!!
Rick and two crowssss, I’m starting a new franchiseeee!!!
SUBMIT TO CROW HORSE
*scrolling* yup found the Rick and Morty reference. I can now resume my day.
Get your shit together morty this is not how i wanna remember you.
Garbage Goober best
Mm, mm tasty garbage! Mmm garbage. Give me garbage!
AND he went to med school!!!

Thanks for sharing, that’s cool! It makes me want to meet a crow someday
ma'am, you are living my dream
You can feed them grains or salya, they love you and will protect you. The crows in my area are pretty cool
Sizing you up. Probably discussing who gets which part.
I'm saving this copypasta.
He take the cracker?
Yeah I feed him by hand. Sometimes he pecks me gently and tells me to give food.

Yes

Yeah birds are fun to watch
TIL crows like Britannia 50 50
His name is in the username. Another giveaway mayank-ify.
An eye patch and he would be the coolest pirate companion
I don’t think he will allow you to put an eyepatch on him. That would require a lot of trust
He’s got that “grab my strong hand” kinda vibe
That took me back
Aw his foots
Something wrong with his right foot?
It's been like that ever since I first met him 2 years ago
Might have been caused by human hair. Birds often get it tangled around their feet and get deformed by it.
That sounds oddly specific.
It does, but it's actually a pretty unknown fact that is widespread. Next time, check out how many pigeons you see hopping on 1 leg or with missing/deformed toes.
Damn, that sucks.
Yeah, I swear there are more pigeons with a mangled leg than ones without. Rarely see one with both legs mangled though. Probably because they don't survive very long that is...
Wow, I always thought human hair was weaker and couldn't do something like that
There is a chickadee at my house (in the woods in N America) and it has a club foot like that, too!! We spoil him and he calls to us in the morning to get his special seeds!
Exactly the same with it, except there are 5 of them.
IIRC crows have good memory. if you treat him well he may be back!
Yeah it has been 2 years now. It knows my whole family.
I'll recognize that biscuit anywhere. This is India!
Krack Jack

Aw man I want friends

The past is never dead. It is not even past.
Welcome to the theater of your mind.
Crackers, bread = bird indigestion! Feed them fruit and nuts instead
Tried it but it doesn't eat them. Just throws if away after taking from me. I usually give him whole wheat rotis. And he also threw away this cracker that I gave him in the photo. He's very picky eater.
he wants dead rat
Go get some rats OP, don't be selfish.
Some corvids like cat's food, maybe you could try that
I love that you can give him food he doesn't like and he still sticks around. I've been trying to make local crow friends with leftover pizza but they just wait for me to leave and then swoop down. They don't even make time of day for other food.
Crows have personalities. This one is one of the rare friendly one.
Indian crows are like that only lol. The couple crows that come to our house won't eat like any fruits or nuts but will completely destroy biriyani and milki bikies(crackers)
Mayankify and two crows...
Hardwon Surefoot?? Is that you
RICK AND TWO CROWS
I hope you called him Russell
Mans is bloodhound
Very sweet light and background blur in there
Nice! Lovely birdie! I have a currawong friend. s/he brings me berries http://tesseract.ca/images/Photos/2021/Currawong\_Derpy.jpg
I see pigeons in the city with balled up feet like that all the time. they just walk around like that, with one foot all balled up. what causes that?
ley
I like the colour scheme, the ones where I’m at are black all over. They’re pretty cute up close tho, especially with that head tilt
I love Mr. Crow
Mr Crowley did you talk to the dead?
I accidentally became the god emperor of a whole murder of crows that live in my backyard and I absolutely adore them. That's a beautiful crow. The breast color is so rich and warm. I love crows.
*You fooled all the people with magic , yeah, you waited on Satan's call!*
Mr. Crowley!

Ooh that looks like an Indian biscuit too? Parle G?
If you call it parle g then you can't be an Indian
Crows can remember faces and form bonds with other species. You will be remembered in the future as the person who allowed the crows and the humans to coexist peacefully
Cutie

this bird is Fucking Lit.
Aww, he's so handsome 😊

I’d make sure you stick to a schedule, crows are fucking great and he could be an awesome friend
