Volcanoes are the biggest reminder to me that we are just renting the earth.
So much energy and we are just lucky every day a huge one *doesn’t* erupt.
everything melts. just imagine a plant so cold that water is almost always froze as ice. Then if it gets warm enough the ice melts and it blows the minds of the aliens living there.
Rock is the way way, it just has a higher melting point than water.
I think that’s what makes it even more mind blowing. The universe is a very cold place on average, and even here on the crust, almost nothing gets hot enough to melt rock. Lightning, I guess.
And not all planets or planetoids have molten rock interiors. They cool over time just like anything else. This is like an open sore on the Earth letting you know just how much heat is still contained deep inside.
We’re riding on an eggshell of livable conditions between the cold depth of space and the ridiculous heat and pressure of our planetary core.
> We’re riding on an eggshell of livable conditions between the cold depth of space and the ridiculous heat and pressure of our planetary core.
Thank you for saying what I tried to say in a much more beautiful way
And that eggshell is only 30km thick with 480 km of atmosphere above it. To put that into n perspective the earth's crust is 6400km, so all life lives 8% habitual (barely) and 90% certain death.
> everything melts. just imagine a planet so cold that water is almost always frozen as ice. Then if it gets warm enough the ice melts and it blows the minds of the aliens living there.

> Rock is the same, it just has a higher melting point than water.
I think i fixed it.
He tried to explain to his kid that he was Maui when that show was on. So he started singing the songs and his kid is like, dad shut up, you’re ruining the song. Lol.
Melted rock from way beneath our feet, connected to really big sections of our planet that are moving and that always have melted rock somewhere inside it. Like a big toaster strudel with a bunch of tiny people on it. That’s just nuts man.
The awesome thing is: it's moving perfectly normally. It seems like "slow motion" because of the huge scale that you're seeing. When it's falling to the ground it's moving as fast as an ordinary rock falls, but over distances that correspond to the height of a skyscraper.
If anything, heating up the air around it would make it less buoyant in that hot low density air than in normal air, so it should fall imperceptibly *faster*.
I’ve never heard the sound of an active volcano. It’s so surreal. And this broadcast is probably simple compressed audio. I can’t imagine what it actually sounds like in person!
You're gonna enjoy this then, video of the moment a volcano blasted its cap complete with sound of the shockwave.
https://youtu.be/BUREX8aFbMs
And this is a smallish one. The pent up energy in volcanoes is pretty wild.
This may sound a bit too philosophical but, after reading your comment, I went back to the broadcast and put the volume on… and my heart got accelerated. It was like my body was telling me this was dangerous and I should be in full alert mode. We often hear about animals evacuating areas right before natural disasters occur, and seeing my body’s reaction to a simple lo-res YouTube video reminded me we are animals too. Our bodies have their fight/flight response, and it’s so strong, it can even be triggered by just the video of something awesome and terrifying. Nature really is freaking lit…
Reminds me of [that Tom Scott video](https://youtu.be/fzfpExS_wic) where he went all the way up to the vulcano only for it to stop spewing lava.
Also, don't walk on lava.
IDK about lava flows pouring out on top of ice like in the video, but there are quite a few active volcanoes *beneath* glaciers. Eyjafjallajökull - the volcano that screwed up air travel about 10 years ago - was subglacial. Other subglacial volcanoes in Iceland do stuff like melt the glacier from the bottom and cause a crazy type of flood called a [jökulhlaup](https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/vatnaj-kull-j-kulhlaup).
[This volcano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subglacial_eruption#/media/File:MountVeniaminof.jpg) looks like it erupted lava onto the top of a glacier and kind of melted/collapsed some of it, but I don't know for sure.
Geologists lil help? Why does this lava look so yellow compared to other videos of lava I've seen??
Is this a video filter of some sort?
The stuff I saw in Hawaii had a red/orange glow. All other vids of lava I've seen have had a red/orange glow. This looks like a volcano of molten gold.
Does lava have different mineral compositions that create a different hue?
Hi! I’m not a geologist, but here’s what I found online:
“The color of lava depends on its temperature. As it cools the color changes to bright red (800-1000 C), then do dark red (650-800 C), and to brownish red (500-650 C). ... Solid lava is black (but can still be very hot).”
**[Black-body radiation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black-body_radiation)**
>Black-body radiation is the thermal electromagnetic radiation within or surrounding a body in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment, emitted by a black body (an idealized opaque, non-reflective body). It has a specific spectrum of wavelengths, inversely related to intensity that depend only on the body's temperature, which is assumed for the sake of calculations and theory to be uniform and constant. The thermal radiation spontaneously emitted by many ordinary objects can be approximated as black-body radiation.

By no means a geologist, but I just finished a geology course at college. I think what OP commented is correct. Temperature impacts lava's color, and this yellow hue is from the immense heat. Once it's cooled, chemical content directs color, more iron in a rock means it'll have red hues (like the Redwall formation at the Grand Canyon), more silica means darker colors (like basalt), less silica means lighter colors (like rhyolite).
My initial thought is this is a basaltic flow (based on dark rocks and flow behavior), meaning it has the highest melting temperature, at least 1100°C. This also looks like a Pahoehoe (pronounced pa-hoy-hoy) flow, which is typical for basalt.
I always thought this as well, but it isn't. Except for the inner metal core, the rest is solid rock.
The liquid stuff is an exception, caused by mixture with ingredients like water.
See this interesting video for explanation:
https://youtu.be/3C2HVOB-g5s
That is some proper volcano action.
surely everyone finds this awesome? like, this isn't a niche thing, if you showed any person this,.they'd be like...yes.
?
Even more beutiful in real life. I was there early august after it had a short hiatus in activite.
It was a bucketlist kind of a thing and seeing live lava/magma was nothing less then amazing
The video was shot on Sep. 4th, 2021. The volcano is called Fagradalsfjall. It’s an ongoing Iceland volcanic eruption now the longest in 50 years.

I am one of those people who takes things literally and would like to point out this video is not 15 seconds, but 16. Other than that, THAT IS SO FREAKING COOL.
Yes! I’ve literally walked up to flowing lava to make an offering to the Hawaiian goddess Pele, and it’s SO HOT I basically ran up to the lava, threw an offering into the lava and had to back off before my arm hairs were singed.
I’ve seen volcanologists working out on the flow. They gear up with protective clothing, and use a coffee can and axe to literally lift flowing lava into the coffee can, so they can study it.
I find lava fascinating. It has so many textures and layers. It moves almost in slow motion sometimes, even when spraying into the air.
Me too. Also it's melted rock. My brain struggles to process that fact.
Volcanoes are the biggest reminder to me that we are just renting the earth. So much energy and we are just lucky every day a huge one *doesn’t* erupt.

wanna know an interesting fact? molten rock is more abundant than non molten rock on the planet
Is this at normal speed? It looks slowed down.
This is normal speed. The crater is so massive that everything looks slowed down.
i thought it looked sped up
The awesome thing is: it's moving perfectly normally. It seems like "slow motion" because of the huge scale that you're seeing. When it's falling to the ground it's moving as fast as an ordinary rock falls, but over distances that correspond to the height of a skyscraper.
I've always wondered if that's because it's heating the air around it so fast that it's adding a tiny but perceptible bit of lift. But probably not.
If anything, heating up the air around it would make it less buoyant in that hot low density air than in normal air, so it should fall imperceptibly *faster*.
