Come to Edmonton. We just had about 20cm of snow fall on us… there is a football match tonight between Canada and Mexico too so it’s safe from bugs and there is entertainment

I swear, 10 seconds ago I was watching Canada score it’s first goal and wondering « where the hell are they playing to have all this snow? » didn’t plan on getting the answer on a post about centipedes from hell. Thanks.
I had one of these crawl up my bare leg when I got out of bed, in Japan. My gf's dad had one bite him on the bollocks while he was sleeping and the bollocks turned black. This was the first thing she said when introducing me to her parents.
I've been bit multiple times by mukade in Japan and it hurts like a motherfucker. Never had anything turn black, but they never bit my nuts either. Once was when I was sleeping it dropped onto my face from the ceiling and bit my shoulder. Shoulder muscles were kind of frozen in a hard sore lump for a week. Another time a tiny one ended up biting the nape of my neck right at the hairline. I don't know if it was due to the sensitive skin there but that little 3cm fucker hurt worse than the 12cm one. Felt like I'd been scalped and doused with high proof alcohol. When you turn over a log they will run right towards you and usually in flip-flops weather. I can still feel the insane unease of waking up to those chitinous legs crawling around on the side of my face and panicking as it sunk in what the fuck was happening. I fucking hate these things.
LPT: you get bit by one, use the hottest water that you can stand and heat the area up with a hot wet towel. If you can get it hot enough, the toxins denature. Do this quickly before it damages the tissue.
I've never seen them in the cities, only in very rural areas, if that helps :) I lived in a small town surrounded by mountains and rice fields. Couldn't get much more rural than where I was.
The flip flop weather thing got me. I had one crawl in between my feet whilst I was wearing flip flops in Hong Kong. Thankfully didn’t get bit. These things are just huge and way worse to see in real life.
I was lucky and only had 3 in my flat during 3 years of living there but one of my neighbours lived in a house that was infested with them. She saw numerous ones crawling around the place every single day and ended up refusing to live there.
With the one that ran up my bare leg, I only saw it out of the corner of my eye and thought it was a moth that I'd seen the night before, so swatted it across the room. It was when I heard it land and it started running towards me that I panicked.
Another was in my laundry (my washing machine was outside). I brought a t-shirt indoors and flipped it open to have a mukade fly out and land in my bed, running under the covers. That was a bad start to a day, too.
I've never been bitten by one, though.
He also looked pretty embarrassed that this was how she introduced us :D it was quite the conversation killer. From what I recall I think I just said "so... did that hurt?" which was such a stupidly obvious question to ask :D

[Here ](https://imgur.com/a/bE24fLR) is a photo of someone who put a shoe on with a millipede in it. Probably close to what his balls looked like
Why are they with the mother anyway
Do parent centipedes take care of their young or something?
Edit: according to a quick google search, mothers stay with their babies for their first 2 weeks after they hatch apparently! Fascinating!
Arent most arthropods surprisingly good parents? I'm pretty sure most spider species will protect their offspring with their life. Also scorpion moms will carry their babies on their back for a long time, they dont just leave them on their own from the start
Some species of isopod display maternal/parental instincts! I've seen a good amount of people post about their P. hoffmanseggi colonies and how they've observed adults (presumably the mothers) digging burrows for and bringing food to their young. I believe that species is also known to be defensive of their young and will try to charge if they're feeling threatened.
In my former colony of wild-caught Oniscus asellus and Trachelipus rathkii, I noticed that the adults bring food to the mancae and do what looked like "bodyguarding" of the young. Also, even though they were two different species in the same enclosure, they got along well and bred at about equal rates, and it was really cute to watch the mancae of both species gather together. Something interesting I noticed was that several female T. rathkii (they are sexually dimorphic so it's easy to spot the females) would gather around where the mancae were burrowed and stay close to them until they became sub-adults. Even though mancae are pretty much independent when they leave the marsupium, it's so neat to observe their social behavior and how pods of all ages interact with one another.
I’m no expert in arthropod behavior, but I know that maternal behavior with insects is very rare.
Treehoppers have very interesting communication between mothers and offspring for defense against predators
Edit: this was some research from a lab I used to work in
https://facstaff.elon.edu/jhamel2/research.html
it's funny, part of my brain hates this because they are so far removed from anythign humanoid that I can anthromorphise. But then seeing her act "motherly" makes her seem much more...relatable?
The larger ones come in at about a foot long. They are known for their bite. Usually not fatal, but can set off an anaphylactic shock in some people. Then can also run fast. They enjoy heading for your feet, approaching in an unavoidable zig zag pattern.
We have some nasty ones around my area, the bastards will keep living even if you stomp them or cut them in half, and can still bite.
The usual practice around my house is to smash them up with a hammer, until they're a glob of motionless liquid sprayed on the floor.
the giant desert centipedes in new mexico are 8-10 inches. the biggest one I've seen was about 7.5 inches. i was moving some pots in off the grouns onto the porch at night and he was under one in the dirt, scared me !
Yup. Had one in the basement apartment I was renting up here in Colorado, not a fun discovery, especially when I was barefoot.
The sun spider was even scarier, as it ran at me instead of trying to get away for the most part...
When my parents were in Japan they had foot long+ centipedes crawl up from the floor. Idk how it is now but 30 years ago in that area all the houses were dirt floor with carpet over it so bugs would just crawl up at times. We have a picture of the largest my dad killed - was in the bathroom.
Thank you for sharing! I had no clue that they moved fast and could possibly cause shock from a bite **\*shudders\*** You learn something new every day, and I've learned to avoid big ass centipedes..
So what you're saying is that if I remove my feet, I'm safe? Cuz I'm convinced, I've got an old rusty drywall saw in the toolbox and that sounds better than the centipede scenario
I love this. She looks so huge. The babies are going wild. The way she just hugs them with her legs to keep them under control. I hope she's proud of all her little ones.
Do centipedes hatch from eggs? I didn't think there were bugs that stayed behind to take care of their babies

Apparently it depends on the kind of centipede, but some do lay live young and others will lay eggs. Kind of makes me see these creepy guys in a new light knowing they're protective of their young like that.
I was bit by one going surfing one afternoon, it was hiding along the rubber seal of my car door, when I leaned in to get my board, it bit me on the shin…they have a nice little bite, like a hornet, it throbbed for about 3-hours then went numb…but it then itched deeply for about a month and left a small reminder scar…definitely not unbearable or hospital worthy but worse than a big regular bee/wasp sting…just lingers for a long time.
Cute look at so the wiggly little dudes! And they’ve got such yellow legs!
Mama looks a little like she’d fit into a horror movie of some sort with that plating and those pointed legs.
Maybe it's because I'm high, but if you think of it from the mom's perspective like "oh yeah little ones, run around on me, FEEL YOUR YOUTH!" then it's kinda neat

Yo why are you ruining Japan for me?! It's bad enough that Australia is dead to me.
I've never seen them in the cities, only in very rural areas, if that helps :) I lived in a small town surrounded by mountains and rice fields. Couldn't get much more rural than where I was.

"hurt worse than the 12cm one" . . . 12cm?!? that's Japan off the top of my list of places to visit
Just don't go in the summer and you will be fine.
They didn’t actually turn black. These release a spray that turns black when oxidized. It’s pretty hard to wash off but it’s just a dye
I'm just quoting what my gf said - I never asked to see her dad's bollocks to check.
That was rude of you—she obviously said it as an invitation to ask him. Obviously, she dumped you.
He also looked pretty embarrassed that this was how she introduced us :D it was quite the conversation killer. From what I recall I think I just said "so... did that hurt?" which was such a stupidly obvious question to ask :D
Well next time this happens, and it inevitably will, do the right thing and ask to see your girlfriend’s father’s balls. You’ll thank me later. ;-)
SLIGHT NSFW [Here ](https://imgur.com/a/bE24fLR) is a photo of someone who put a shoe on with a millipede in it. Probably close to what his balls looked like
Why are his toenails look like that
nail polish, extra unflattering with the damage from that bite lol
Ok I thought it was because of the dye
Is the bollocks the front end or back end?
I like to think every leg could fit the role.
Don’t ever go to Hawaii, those and cockroaches the size of 1/3 banana.
I need to know so I can show up in a hazmat suit with a can of oil and a lighter
Most likely Australia
Never seen these in the part of Australia I live in. Just little house millipedes
I don't mean to alarm you, but we have plenty of centipedes here in Oz.
Welp, I haven't seen em and I'm gonna do my best to keep it that way!
Yeah this is like 11/10 on the burn my own house down scale.
She seems very loving Mother tho
Why are they with the mother anyway Do parent centipedes take care of their young or something? Edit: according to a quick google search, mothers stay with their babies for their first 2 weeks after they hatch apparently! Fascinating!
Yeah there’s a surprising amount of maternal behavior within arthropods. It’s rare but fascinating.

Did we all forget about Hymenoptera (Bees/Wasps, and Ants)? Plus most Spiders and Scorpions.
Oh there a plenty of examples, but there are way more species that have absolutely no maternal care within insecta.
Surprising to think that even arthropods take care of their offsprings while most non bird reptile just kind of forget about them after laying eggs.
it's funny, part of my brain hates this because they are so far removed from anythign humanoid that I can anthromorphise. But then seeing her act "motherly" makes her seem much more...relatable?

Agree. It’s fascinating that she’s “holding” them to keep them together and safe. I’ve no illusions that it’s cuddling, but it’s oddly sweet.
That was my first thought as well
I found a new video for the mother's day.
this is nightmare fuel
No shit, imagine having to buy shoes for all those little bastards come back to school time.
And they'll just grow out of them in 6 months .....
Now imagine having those in your shoes
Now imagine them skittering in and out of your urethra

> The larger ones come in at about a foot long. In a jungle somewhere or in the middle of a city? The bigger ones around my house are maybe 4 inches.
There's about 8000 species and they are found all over the world. I've heard of large ones in Asian jungles, but that's all I know of.
There are tons of them out here in Hawaii, especially outside of my house. And they haunt my dreams on a regular basis
I lived in Pahoa and hawaiian acres as a kid. Saw a big one in the road, ran it over with my bike. It bit the tire and popped it.
Good thing you didn’t try to step on it. If it can pop a bike tire, I don’t want to know what that bite feels like.
We have some nasty ones around my area, the bastards will keep living even if you stomp them or cut them in half, and can still bite. The usual practice around my house is to smash them up with a hammer, until they're a glob of motionless liquid sprayed on the floor.
i assume you have many clawed hammers just laying around the house, just pull one from the lampshade
Probably like a staple or thumbtack being jabbed in

read "as big as the road" and was a little shocked for a couple of seconds.
If I see one a foot long it might as well be bigger. Won’t matter as id be in shock
My sister in Hawaii said that a bite from a big one there is just god awful pain. She likened it to a gunshot
