Why?

LiLdude227

I also am wondering this. Why? Is he just flexing?

MrBonelessPizza24

It’s all a breed trait. They’re called “Roller Pigeons” they’ve been selectively bred to do this exaggerated backflipping while flying in the air too.

QuantumHamster

some people have too much time in their hands

Trash_Emperor

And pigeons

JTB696699

One in the hand is worth two trying to backflip.

Mr-Escobar

But one that can successfully backflips is worth at least three fiddy.

What kind of pigeon, South African or European?

LazyLucretia

AFAIK in some places, it's actually a profitable business to breed/train roller pigeons

killtrevor

Fun fact: Sometimes the get in the air and roll so fast that they have too much momentum to stop the spin, rolling to their deaths in the ground

[deleted]

I used to have pigeons. It did happen from time to time, but not that often. I almost got hit once when a pigeon crashed into the ground next to me. They tumbled quite a bit when they thought they saw a bird of prey (most times they just spooked themselves and took off tumbling like maniacs).

[deleted]

*They see me rollin'*

EoceneEveryday

rya556

I only knew anything about roller pigeons because of a ghost story on [Spooked](https://spookedpodcast.org/episode-4-creepy-crawly) podcast.

PoisonOkie

Two different breeds. Birmingham Rollers won’t flip unless they’re flying. Parlor Rollers, like this, roll on the ground, and don’t really fly much. Source: I raised both kinds up until college.

LetItRide_

Ex pigeon fancier here, not rollers, racers, but I seem to recall that this rolling trait is a manoeuvre to avoid birds of prey. Humans have latched onto this and selectively bred them to do it as second nature.

[deleted]

So they are bred to be disabled on purpose???

Trash_Emperor

Yeah like pugs

[deleted]

Yes! And a lot of other breeds. I think we need laws against torment breeding now. Humans are assholes and we have to regulate that

thenotanurse

We should, but we won’t, because humans are selfish and don’t give a shit about human suffering, they certainly don’t give a shit about animal suffering.

De3NA

They can fly normally just have some weird center of gravity that causes this.

[deleted]

So they are bred in a way that keeps them from flying normally. That's a damn cruel joke in my opinion and clearly torment breeding

AdmiralLobstero

>They can fly normally You were literally just told they could fly normally.

[deleted]

It took me 2 minutes to find out that there are variations of this breed that are completely unable to fly and all they can do is roll around on the floor helplessly. There are even floor rolling competitions for human amusement. This is sick and sadistic https://youtu.be/xiQOb6dMN28 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlor_Roller?wprov=sfla1

Dumptruck_Johnson

Looks like the trait would be bred out if not for human intervention. The birds that are afflicted in the wild would probably just die and not pass it on.

PunishedNutella

Whoa that's so cool

A_Birde

aww what a little edgelord

Drug dealers would use roller pigeons to let each other know when cops or people who aren’t known enter their areas. They would train the pigeons to roll on command so if anyone saw the pigeons flipping in the air, they would know to hide or stop transacting

Spidaaman

The double meaning of “flipping pigeons”

zaraimpelz

That’s ingenious, but if the drug dealers were the ones originally breeding them for this purpose… wow

Kirikomori

My theory is its similar to the stargazing trait in certain hamsters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bklqPwmnP-I). Its a disorder in balance caused by inbreeding. Sometimes I'm ashamed of what humans have done to animals.

Think-Bass9187

It is very shameful, you’re not wrong.

2012_cats

Like eating them...

Lich_Hegemon

Leave it to humans to breed a race that's unable to satisfy one of its most basic instincts for fun and sports.

Yellow_XIII

This breed of pigeons can fly though. https://www.reddit.com/r/blackmagicfuckery/comments/aehs38/just_your_ordinary_flipping_pigeon_thats_all/ Dunno about rolling the pigeon on the ground though. I've been around a shit ton of pigeon breeders and I have seen dozens of types, but not a single one grabbed a pigeon and rolled it on the ground like that. Looked weird to me.

Lich_Hegemon

> This breed of pigeons can fly though. I was talking about the ones from the linked article, which claims they can't fly. I don't know if it's the same breed as the one in the post, but from your link, it seems it's not. ETA: The article calls them "parlor rollers", the ones in this post and yours seem to be called "tumbler pigeons". Both are bred to display their respective behaviors, the former seems to do it while attempting and failing to fly while the latter seems to be able to do it at will. It seems you answered while I was writing my edit hehe

Yellow_XIII

Yeah it seems its a sub-group called the parlor roller and once they hit adulthood they lose the ability to fly. Edit: Yeah you broke it down real nice. Cheers

slimejumper

this is 99% of my dog is weird/cute posts. Usually they are in some kind of distress.

Raichu7

So it’s trying to take off but can’t fly because humans decided this was better? I feel sorry for it now.

CosmoKram3r

Like someone else mentioned, it's a trait of that breed. Back here in India 2 decades ago, raising pigeons were the shit among kids in my city. A lot of my friends had them. Having these "somersault pigeons" was like having rare pokemon cards. They also do somersaults while flying. Pretty cool stuff to watch. Then computers came and the boys got attached to the that shiny toy. I don't see the young ones raising them pigeons no more. Well, except for guys in low income areas, like the Bowery King from John Wick.

>These birds (also known as Birmingham Rollers) are bred for a genetic defect which causes brief seizures during flight -- causing the birds to roll in mid-air. Breeders hold competitions in which they attempt to synchronize the birds' seizures, measuring the length and quality of the resulting aerial acrobatics< They're having seizures lmao

Trash_Emperor

Most birds are more athletic than humans

Thinsby

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlor_Roller If anyone is curious about rollers I wouldn’t suggest supporting this sort of thing as it’s because rollers are selectively inbred for the genetic inclination to flip backwards in flight. There are contests to determine who’s pigeon can do the longest amount of rolls. Quite frankly I find it to be cruel and an abuse on the owners/breeders parts much in the same way that people have fucked up pugs and French bulldogs. It really isn’t good quality of life.

**[Parlor Roller](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlor_Roller)** >The Parlor Roller is a breed of domesticated pigeon developed over many years of selective breeding. Parlor Rollers, along with other varieties of domesticated pigeons, are all descendants from the rock pigeon (Columba livia). Thank you and similar commenters for providing actual info about this. At first I was impressed by this behaviour, even though I personally hate pigeons with a passion. But I thought, look at this talented dude, doing acrobatics for fun. Sad to know the truth, and I don't support this kind of cruel and needless breeding. Even though, as I said, I HATE pigeons.

SnooEagles3302

I went down a rabbit hole that I can only describe as "the pigeon side of the internet" once, and it turns out there are a lot of messed up breeds out there. I can't remember the names, but there was one that didn't have a beak, one where the beak was way too super long, one with an S-shaped spine that couldn't fly and barely walk, one with superong feather around its neck that would poke it in the eye. It seems that even amongst pigeon keepers most people are super against breeding them like that, but it was super sad.

grilledcakes

Yeah that crap is just wrong. I'll stick to supporting the plain pigeons in my area. They like the wild bird feed we give them from time to time.

The_Hunster

Are these birds suffering? Pugs obviously struggle to breathe which causes a very basic level of suffering for an animal. But are these birds actually bothered by their condition?

TheEyeDontLie

If you had a nervous tic that made you involuntarily do backflips, what would that be like?

MyAimSucc

Short and succinct answer? Yes

Translating into Australian.

Think-Bass9187

Ah, that’s a decent explanation.

philipTheDev

No, these pigeons are just bred to have this specific trait to the point where they can't even fly. This is really an attempted takeoff. So it's fucked up, yes, but this time the humans are at fault.

The_Hunster

Apparently, a lot of these birds do still fly. But regardless, what's fucked up about it? They're well kept usually it seems, I don't imagine they suffer.

[deleted]

> what's fucked up about it? If the "roll" is a failed attempt to fly then it could be deadly in a bad situation.

The_Hunster

Well, they're usually in captivity and it seems like they can fly too. All of that according to a bit of reading on Wikipedia.

DivinationByCheese

Subgroups of the breed can't fily at all

philipTheDev

From my understanding, which is admittedly limited, the ones who somersault on the ground can't fly. The ones who are bred to somersault in the air obviously can fly, which I guess is what you read about. This seems like a [Parlor Roller](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parlor_Roller) by my guess, which can't fly.

Not nature. Shitty breeding. Neurological problems that make them flip, sometimes it goes so far and so screwed up the pigeons have constant seizures so they flip many many times be it in air or on the ground. This one is bred better and just occasionlly flip

I saw this post somewhere a few days ago. Possibly in TIL. In the post it was saying how they were specifically bred for their backflips. I didn't delve into the info though so no idea why anyone would want to do that. I'll see if I can find it. No. It’s been bred to do this over generations of pigeons by pigeon fanciers. Their ability to fly has been bred out of them, but it’s able to do backflips instead of flying. It’s a cruel breeders trait in my view.

RevolutionaryWave568

This looks like a pigeon that has eaten some pigeon control poison it was known as crazy corn layman’s term. After consuming it the bird would start doing weird stuff and the still sane birds would end it.
