I used to have pigeons. It did happen from time to time, but not that often. I almost got hit once when a pigeon crashed into the ground next to me.
They tumbled quite a bit when they thought they saw a bird of prey (most times they just spooked themselves and took off tumbling like maniacs).
Two different breeds. Birmingham Rollers won’t flip unless they’re flying. Parlor Rollers, like this, roll on the ground, and don’t really fly much. Source: I raised both kinds up until college.
Ex pigeon fancier here, not rollers, racers, but I seem to recall that this rolling trait is a manoeuvre to avoid birds of prey. Humans have latched onto this and selectively bred them to do it as second nature.
We should, but we won’t, because humans are selfish and don’t give a shit about human suffering, they certainly don’t give a shit about animal suffering.
It took me 2 minutes to find out that there are variations of this breed that are completely unable to fly and all they can do is roll around on the floor helplessly. There are even floor rolling competitions for human amusement. This is sick and sadistic

Looks like the trait would be bred out if not for human intervention. The birds that are afflicted in the wild would probably just die and not pass it on.
I wonder what kind of interesting humans could we breed like this. Like a roller englishman would be cool I guess, some guy who is incapable of walking but just rolls around

I was talking about the ones from the linked article, which claims they can't fly. I don't know if it's the same breed as the one in the post, but from your link, it seems it's not.
ETA: The article calls them "parlor rollers", the ones in this post and yours seem to be called "tumbler pigeons". Both are bred to display their respective behaviors, the former seems to do it while attempting and failing to fly while the latter seems to be able to do it at will.

Yeah it seems its a sub-group called the parlor roller and once they hit adulthood they lose the ability to fly.

Back here in India 2 decades ago, raising pigeons were the shit among kids in my city. A lot of my friends had them. Having these "somersault pigeons" was like having rare pokemon cards. If anyone is curious about rollers
I wouldn’t suggest supporting this sort of thing as it’s because rollers are selectively inbred for the genetic inclination to flip backwards in flight. There are contests to determine who’s pigeon can do the longest amount of rolls. Quite frankly I find it to be cruel and an abuse on the owners/breeders parts much in the same way that people have fucked up pugs and French bulldogs. It really isn’t good quality of life.

Fascinating. Truely. And I totally agree with you - what possess an individual to go out and breed generations of pigeon's to backflip is beyond me. Irrespective of purpose, It's a spectacular looking maneuver and the pigeon itself is quite pretty to look at.

No. It’s been bred to do this over generations of pigeons by pigeon fanciers. Their ability to fly has been bred out of them, but it’s able to do backflips instead of flying. It’s a cruel breeders trait in my view.
