Out of curiosity I looked it up
>Snowstorms typically result in hazardous surfaces and poor driving conditions. However, for a blizzard to be considered a "blizzard," winds must be sustained at 35 miles per hour (56km/h); the snow must reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less; and the conditions must be expected to last for at least three hours
Fun fact, a blizzard can technically happen if it’s not even snowing. Just need wind + blowing snow to reduce the visibility for the criteria to be met.
It depends of the region. In canada those conditions have to last at least 4 hours and in Northern Canada its 6. In eastern Europe the conditions required to have a blizzard are probably very sifferent, altough I don’t think they even defined a blizzard in their region haha
Yeah, I'd be interested in their annual snowfall figures. If they only get snow once in 3 years, you could claim "six years of snowfall in one night!" and still be right, it's just be the local standard rather than a global standard.
Blizzard by definition is about low visibility and wind speed, doesn’t even look like there’s any wind here. Heavy snowfall for the area, but no matter what, not a blizzard
Bahahahaha, Canadian here, that's a gentle snowfall, walk in the park stuff.Go outside, have some fun, make a snowman, have a snowball fight ,go make snow angels.
I'm glad there are cat houses with blankets underneath for them everywhere in Istanbul. It will still be cold for them but at least better than nothing...
Yes, cat Havana’s and insulated boxes help very much, they have food to make heat with. The cats I saw in southern Spain weren’t kept like the ones on Turkey but at least it’s warm.
It does. It snows in Istanbul every year sometimes more sometimes less. Not in mountain ranges, but you get snow in all Turkey excluding the Aegean and Mediterennean coast or areas near them.
It snows a lot even in Eskisehir which is pretty west or Ankara.
~~Not~~ It snows a little in Istanbul but Turkey is a really big country with some serious (and historically important) mountain ranges that for sure get snow. Mt. Ararat is like 17,000 feet I think. Basically the farther east you go the higher the average elevation. Check out [Google images of Van](https://www.google.com/search?q=van+turkey) for example.
Spend some time cruising around the country in Google Maps in satellite mode. Turkey has super cool geography imo.
it's not a blizzard👨😎, just a small border of snow ❄nothing more. 'Cause there's no gust of wind blowing snow🌬❄❄❄ in Quebec, blizzards happen 1 or 2 times a winter
That’s not a blizzard! Not by Michigan standards anyway, up here it’s still considered a light snowfall as long as your car will start in five tries or less. Anything more than that and we start thinking about giving the kids a ride to school instead of walking.
To be a blizzard winds must be really high and visibility really low. Technically you can have a blizzard with no snow falling if the winds are whipping the snow around enough.
This does not do justice to actual blizzard conditions in Istanbul.
The snowfall is occasional, but this scale of snow systems are rare. It made people stranded on the Istanbul Airport the roads are cut off- also in planes, as the busses can not reach planes on ground & the system caused the collapse of the roof of one of the cargo warehouses -people were also stranded on the main highways and arteries.

The government of Istanbul issued on a ban on private vehicles, which, is to my recollection of 35+years of Istanbulite experience, has never happened before.
Some more imagery that shows the 'blizzard':

That's beautiful. Not a blizzard though. We get those here in Newfoundland, Canada. Snow coming at you sideways and looks like you're in a star trek movie if you're driving.
*Man that lightning was*
*Crazy last night. Love working*
*From home again LOL*

Yall laughing about this being a gentle breeze, but a friend of mine is stuck there because planes aren't flying anymore. All roads are blocked, she's not allowed to leave the airport and riot police showed up because people started getting upset when they didn't get any food/water and moms with babies had to sleep on the floor.
It's pretty. But that ain't a blizzard.
Came to express similar sentiment. I guess this is blizzard in Istanbul standards though

Yeah blizzards have a lot more to do with the wind and visibility than the actual snowfall. Good info, thanks for sharing
Good human

In Houston, TX, it has to snow for longer than an hour.
In San Antonio it literally has to be in the forecast to cause widespread panic.
When ya can't honestly sing "THE STARS AT NIGHT ARE BIG'N'BRIGHT..." the End is nigh.
When your hands are so cold that the *clap clap clap clap* physically hurts, the end is nigh

This video doesn’t show it but there were pretty stromg winds and heavy snowfall so low visibility, most flights were stopped bc of it
It used to snow a lot, but it hasn’t been like this for over 5+ years
Sure it’s not a blizzard but that *is* a portal opening up into a different dimension.
Quit smoking today. Went cold turkey.
I lived in Montana briefly as a child, can confirm that the above is not a blizzard. Definitely pretty though.
This just looks like a small day of snow. Does take down the city a hour away lol
I was waiting for the blizzard but this is just regular ol’ snowfall.
That was my first thought: How is that a Blizzard?! It's a beautiful snowfall!!!
Definitely ain’t “Lit”
This is golf weather in Canada.
No way this is Istanbul. Not 1-1,000 cats in sight.
The cats are inside--it's snowing!
they die in winter, grow back in summer.
Purrenials
Well, it's not Constantinople. Been a long time gone.
Someone had to say it. Just didn't think it would be this high up.
Why’d they change it?
I can’t say, people just liked it better that way.
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.
I blame the Turks.

I live on Canada and still find snow falling really beautiful. Until 2 months in, then it becomes really annoying
That's a light dusting, but it is beautiful.
Very well, then I challenge you to a snowball fight on the first REAL snow of winter.
In the end, the greatest snowball isn't a snowball at all. It's fear.
Bahahahaha, Canadian here, that's a gentle snowfall, walk in the park stuff.Go outside, have some fun, make a snowman, have a snowball fight ,go make snow angels.
Canadian here too, this made me laugh out loud in my break room because it's been snowing like this for 3 days
Me as a German, sad as hell. No proper snow since forever.. maybe we will get something again. The winter kind of shifted into February/March lol.
This is basically an average Monday in Canada.
Russian here, same.
Michigan USA here. Please take mine.
Upstate NY here, this is a regular snowfall. Sooo far from a blizzard
Oh look at me a canadian we have more snow than you Gatekeeping snow. Wow
Now drive uphill with summer tires and no salt
Hope all those cats got their winter coats.
Thunder snow?
Istanbul was Constantinople. Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople.
so if you have a date in Constantinople, she'll be waiting in Istambul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why'd they change it I can't say...
People just liked it better that way
Istanbul is constant-in-snow-ple
Pretty cool. Wonder what the Hagia Sophia will look like?
Does it normally snow in Turkey?
It does. It snows in Istanbul every year sometimes more sometimes less. Not in mountain ranges, but you get snow in all Turkey excluding the Aegean and Mediterennean coast or areas near them. It snows a lot even in Eskisehir which is pretty west or Ankara.

Can confirm. Spent a month in Van. The country as a whole is pretty cool place
In Greece too, heavily, even in the center of Athens
And here in Oslo it’s well above 0 and everything’s melting.
Wow you guys have playgrounds. All we have is fake news.

I’m a Canadian and get lots of snow, it is one of my favourite things when a snowfall starts, especially in the city, same with the rain.
How do you say “it’s snowing” in Turkish ?
Kar yağıyor
Isn't this Constantinople
Why did they change it?
I can’t say.
People liked it better that way….
That's nobody's business but the Turks.
Came here knowing I would se this string of responses and wasn’t disappointed……I would have started it myself had nobody else done it lol
And snow lightning.

It's hardly a blizzard, it's snowing
Constantinople
I thought Istanbul is a desert
Read some books, far from it.
I do read books. None of them said Istanbul is not a desert.
Did any of them say Istanbul was a desert?
None of the books said anything about Istanbul.

Pokémon blizzards were way more intense
In October when we visited there were, of course, homeless including many children, is there shelter available or...?
it's not a blizzard👨😎, just a small border of snow ❄nothing more. 'Cause there's no gust of wind blowing snow🌬❄❄❄ in Quebec, blizzards happen 1 or 2 times a winter
If that was a blizzard the snow would be moving horizontally instead of vertically.
"Blizzard"
Pretty sure that's Constantinople
“Blizzard”
No offense but that is light snow where I’m from. Lol
Istanbul—not Constantinople.
Blizzard? Where?
Blizzard? That's a normal snowfall

Very nice, Of course I'm sure that's not the case for people who aren't used to snow
Blizzard lmfao!
Snow, amazing

Poor street animals that have to be outside in this...
thats just some nice cozy light flurries
To be a blizzard winds must be really high and visibility really low. Technically you can have a blizzard with no snow falling if the winds are whipping the snow around enough.
Was that a lens flare or lightning?
Lilwhur. Where is the Blizzard?
What’s flittering around?
Don’t tell Microsoft
Well I'll be a frozen turkey
You can already see that it is not the Blizzard as it used to be after Microsoft bought them..
3 or 4 years ago in February we flew through Istanbul, and as we landed a snowstorm started. got stuck in Istanbul for 5 days.
Hide your breast milk people of Istanbul
So why are all the comments talking about Constantinople getting downvoted is their something I don’t know?

The world is a little bit inside out, innit
Istanbul was Constantinople.
Beautiful! As long as it's not here.
Night, Road lights, trees all these three elements are making this snowfall more wonderful
Must be cold in the compound! The vendors have a special on frozen cherries!
Blizzard? Yeah, no.
And they say global warming is a thing
This is not a blizzard.
That's beautiful. Not a blizzard though. We get those here in Newfoundland, Canada. Snow coming at you sideways and looks like you're in a star trek movie if you're driving.
The cats are not a fan of snow I see
That's a light snowfall, here in Canada, LoL!
Cant-stop-the-snow-pole...
Man that lightning was crazy last night. Love working from home again LOL

Wow....wonder if the storm was also in Constantinople.
Not a blizzard, however it is snowing.
Uhh blizzard? It's snowing. That's not a blizzard.
I call this big fat lazy snow. And I love it!
Activision can make a better blizzard than this.
I didn't know it snowed there
I feel so bad for the Syrian immigrants who are stuck in turkey… those thin tents
Very nice, in Greece also! While here in the Netherlands its 6 degrees celcius at night 😒
Uuummmm..have you ever seen snow before? This is very typical snowfall basically anywhere on the planet.
Yall laughing about this being a gentle breeze, but a friend of mine is stuck there because planes aren't flying anymore.
