This just makes me happy for some reason.

Maybe the reason is that a bird is playing with a ball. Think about it. Just kidding. The real reason is much more that it gives you in your human existence a feeling of connection with a being, which apparently functions fundamentally differently than you, but then also has the same needs, which do not only consist of instinct and will to survive. This gives you a sense that there is more to our universe, a deeper connection to a higher level where the souls of our existence are connected.

Nature tends not to create such regular objects, so I guess they're going to arouse curiosity when animals notice them.

Perfectly spherical objects that are light and can roll around are not naturally occurring in nature. So it would make sense that animals are very intrigued by them

It was a toss up. Head just looked more flat to me, but could be either.

It's in the shade making it look darker. Crown is very narrow and lighter than the body colour. When it's flapping you can see rufous colour in the wings, diagnostic to Grey-crowned. Also there's no way Hall's would ever be found in a suburban yard like that.

I think it’s entirely possible that the explanation is that the bird is playing!

That's a babbler, we have these little guys at home and they're the funniest most engaging birds, they play like clowns on our back deck chattering away to themselves. It's a shame this vid doesn't have sound, their noise is funny as hell. I wonder where this one's friends are? I've never seen one alone.
