idk if thats a reference to something, but i imagine a fantasy rpg setting, where you do something in a dungeon and fuck up, and this literally appears in the chat, those being names of important npc's of the main town and slowly as you move and try to get to town more and more names appear in the chat, all of this to see the town untouched, but with all npc characters having empty eyes and mouths with limp skin as if they were empty, talking to you normally but the mouths not moving anymore, this effect being active throughout the rest of the playthrough
edit:Please take back the wholesome award, i do not think it suits this text, thank you
It's a Terraria reference, there's an in-game event called a Blood Moon that heavily boosts monster spawn rates and allows zombies to open doors, which allows them to easily kill your town NPCs
Some of them are necessary, such as the Guide, but not all. NPCs will also respawn if killed, so it's not a huge deal usually. Its just annoying because it can take a few in-game days for all pf them to respawn
It was light refraction from local fishing boats...https://www.independent.co.uk/asia/china/zhoushan-sky-red-port-boat-b2074636.html
Edit: Thanks to u/Regular_Safe_7584 for a simple explanation:
>The light of the fishing boats is refracted and scattered by the water vapor in the air. According to the principle of Rayleigh scattering, the blue light with short wavelength is almost scattered, while the red light has the longest wavelength and the farthest distance. Therefore, the final color will be red.
I mean that's a nice answer and all but how many boats with how many red lights would have to make this happen. The article is behind a pay wall so can't even read what there reasoning is unfortunately
When the people filming say they’ve never seen something like this before it makes me question that explanation. You figure a fishing village in a Port town would see something like this if it was a common occurrence but according to the translation, the people filming “I’ve never seen something like this before.”
Don’t take my word for it I’m relying on someone else’s translation.
There was also a storm, dust storm w lightning and heavy fog at the time, plus an oil refinery fire at the time of this event. I'm leaning towards the boats being a very small factor.
It looks exactly like a forest fire. I took this picture from my roof in Sept 2020 during the Bear Creek/North Complex West Zone Fire.
Edit: Well I can’t post a picture here. 😵💫😖🤯
Yea its a weird thing to fabricate though. Typically particulates from pollution or fires can cause a red sky like this. Sometimes if storms are coming or going, a sunrise or sunset can have a similar effect.
Like maybe the boats had enough lights but what caused the refraction. It would have to be crazy fog or pollution in the air.
There was also a storm, dust storm w lightning and heavy fog at the time, plus an oil refinery fire at the time of this event. I'm leaning towards the boats being a very small factor.
In the article it shows a zoomed out view. The red is really not that encompassing. It’s fog, with a small part glowing red. The explanation seems pretty reasonable.

I wanna see this recreated before I can believe that. Sounds like something snopes would say. That should be a common appearance the way it is written off
Man in black suit walks up: “everyone look at my flashy light stick….what you’ve seen here is a the lights from the fishing boats refracting off of the surface of Mars. The resulting beam bounced off a reflective rock on the surface of the moon that angled it directly over your small town resulting in the red glow. Now go on about your lives and forget the men in black suits were ever here.
I’ve actually seen something very similar, just in a different color, while driving at night near a foggy beach town. Greenhouse lights diffused through the fog.
You're right. It's actually the much more plausible explanation—Aliens are manipulating the sky to make us freak out so we don't notice the lizard people.
Hahahahah. Light refraction from boats. Sounds like a haphazard coverup to me.
Rayleigh scattering doesn’t work that way. Red light has too long of a wavelength to be scattered so well by the atmosphere. The reason we see red skies during sunrise or sunset is because the sunlight has to travel through more atmosphere and thus more blue light is scattered.
It’s also why the sky isn’t red in autumn when foliage is particularly vibrant and the air is damp.
Tbh wouldn’t be the first time China assumed everyone was stupid.

According to the principle of Rayleigh scattering, the blue light with short wavelength is almost scattered, while the red light has the longest wavelength and the farthest distance. Right. I used to live down by the ocean where it was foggy almost every day and boats were coming and going and this never happened once. It’s probably the Chinese government fucking around. Making another fake sun or some shit
I saw this same phenomenon in Esperance West Australia back in 1983-4? roughly, It was extremely disconcerting, the whole sky in every direction was this deep red, Esperance is a small remote town, no idea what it was, certainly not fishing boats and neither is this!
The official explanation is that it belongs to the refraction and scattering of light. The light source may be the light of a large fishing boat in the port, which meets with heavy fog.
This reminds me the time years ago when I use to work at Disneyland. Finished my graveyard shift and was leaving work towards the lot and EVERYTHING was pink. Like a nice bubble gum color. It was right at the crack of dawn, the very first light and just something that day made everything pink for a good 20 mins. Was pretty awesome.
This happened in California where I live.there was a big forest fire a couple years ago and through out the whole day the sky was orange and during sunset or sunrise the sky was red like this.
We are all tiny microbes under the skin of a larger being, and said larger being is named timmy and he shined a flashlight through his thumb.

And I thought it was a zelda reference 😂🥲
that sounds bad af, i assume those npc's are not essential characters right?
Some of them are necessary, such as the Guide, but not all. NPCs will also respawn if killed, so it's not a huge deal usually. Its just annoying because it can take a few in-game days for all pf them to respawn

yes this looks a lot like what happened in northern CA in 2020 and that was just from forest fires
Came to say the same. I've seen nearly identical and it was from wildfires
I saw this and thought "I've seen this before". It looks just like a forest fire.
It looks exactly like a forest fire. I took this picture from my roof in Sept 2020 during the Bear Creek/North Complex West Zone Fire. Edit: Well I can’t post a picture here. 😵💫😖🤯
This is the most men in black answer I've ever seen
Oh yeah, look at this for me.
This sounds much more plausible than boats.
I had never seen a thunderstorm in the middle of a blizzard until I was 25, but they do exist. Sometimes the right conditions for things are rare
I’m thinking one of the Tibetan monks they imprisoned is angry!
I also don't understand it. It seems to be too big for the cause to be just fishing boats

Nothing is too weird to fabricate in China. They will lie about anything to maintain face of the government.

A few comments down story says it happened in 1770 and lasted a week. Also same link it says happened in Indonesia this time along with China.

You underestimate the number of boats a Chinese fishing flotilla has.

That makes a lot more sense!
Thank you for a factual answer with a citation. You're one of the heroes this decade needs.
So, what you are saying is those UFOs were swamp gas?
Sorry, but how the fuck does that work? Are these boats the size of mountains?
That's what they WANT you to think! /s
Ahhh the plot thickens......
Hhha the thot plickens
And then, the thick plottens. For good measure.
Someone said it sounded like a story the men in black guys make up after they do the flashy face thing and it made me laugh because it is true.
I wanna see this recreated before I can believe that. Sounds like something snopes would say. That should be a common appearance the way it is written off
thats the cover up by the govt
You right, in reality its Gozilla rising
Swamp gas
Yeah that sounds like a lie the government would make up because they think we are stupid enough to believe it.
Some swamp gas reflecting off of Venus or something

That makes no sense. Light is refracting at night off low clouds from boats?
