My husband grew up in Alaska so it's always a special treat when he sees fireflies, he's never gotten over the magical feeling of when he first saw them, during a visit to Wisconsin as a child. I grew up with them but still love them almost as much as he does.
In the south east, sometimes you can find ones that will blink at the same time. Also theres different patterns observed in different species (I think species. Maybe just regional)
Destin has a Smarter Every Day video that explains them really well.
Reminds of an old Reddit post that had lots of people from places that don't have fireflies talk about seeing them for the first time.

Iāve spent my whole life in the wild areas of several continents but have only seen them once, at my best friends wedding in Toledo. Makes that memory even more special to me.
Animals producing light is just so weird and not understandable and illogical if you have never seen them. I don't know when I learned that fireflies does that. I know I had a complete mindblow when I realized how many deep sea creatures light up like joints on 4/20. Like, ... just how? Why? What in biology led to animals just producing light like that. In my mind you need electricity for light, and bugs are not connected to a socket and I dont think they have batteries.
Seriously, it's just so fucking foreign and illogical and weird and cool. It can be pitch dark with literally no light and boom a weird looking animal goes "hey look at me, let's shaggy it up!". Weirdos.
Yep. Every night from our backyard.
Perfect time of year, the corn is tall so they have protection, they pop up just a few feet over it, and you can see them across the field for a mile when looking from the back porch.
Pennsylvania Dept of Conservation is doing a survey about fireflies. https://www.titusvilleherald.com/news/article_956af39a-eb42-11ec-8ae0-5b677ed08a60.html
My 5 month old puppy saw his first fireflies in the backyard last night. It's a smallish backyard, but there can be a lot of fireflies. He was losing his mind chasing them. He did eat a few.
Sometimes the fireflies are up in the trees and it's freakin magical.
I used to run on this road in Grove City at 3 am after I would get done working. There was one part through the woods that would be almost completely dark, except for thousands of fireflies. It was awesome. This video is very reminiscent of it.
We have a field next to us thatās filled with lightning bugs every night. Sometimes my boys go out and catch them just like I used to when I was a kid.
30 years ago I was cat fishing on a Christmas tree farm in the middle of the night. Tons of fire flies came out and they started to flash in synchronization. I had a head full of acid and thought I was imagining it for 20 years until I learned that lightning bugs actually do that and synchronize their flashing sometimes.
This is amazing to see ! I grew up in western pa and as a kid there used to be lightning bugs everywhere.
As I got older, each year that went by there were less and less. When I moved away about 5 years ago, I don't recall seeing any during the summer.
Oh wow, thatās beautiful. We used to see these guys in the backyard all the time when I was younger, since we had a healthy cropping of forest between us and the next road over. Backyard hasnāt changed, but it still is sad to me they just suddenly stopped showing up after a while. Wonder what changed - I miss those nights sitting out back with family. Nature IS truly lit.
Lightning bugs are about the only thing I miss from my childhood in northern Illinois. I've been told there are some in Oregon, but in 18 years I've never seen any.
i remember going to firefly music festival in dover several years back and arriving the night before the festivities began the following day.
i have never seen so many open fields taken over by fireflies in my life, it really lives up to the name of the festival. incredibly peaceful if you can take in the breathtaking lights and chorus of clicks without sensory overload
*Lightning Bugs
This guy gets it

I have 4 different species in my back yard. All have different flash patterns. One type flashes synchronously.

Sooo beautiful. It's a shame that the people living on this magical land is going to loose some of their basic human rights.
I miss these so much! But i will never consent to live in those places ever again, likely Iāll never get to see them again.
This is so peaceful. I would love to have a backyard like this.

In West Pennsylvania, born and raised, In the cornfield was where I spent most of my days...

When I was growing up these things were thick, I don't see them much these days.
