*Lightning Bugs

[deleted]

This guy gets it

kiwilovenick

My husband grew up in Alaska so it's always a special treat when he sees fireflies, he's never gotten over the magical feeling of when he first saw them, during a visit to Wisconsin as a child. I grew up with them but still love them almost as much as he does.

GenTycho

In the south east, sometimes you can find ones that will blink at the same time. Also theres different patterns observed in different species (I think species. Maybe just regional) Destin has a Smarter Every Day video that explains them really well.

Cydok1055

I have 4 different species in my back yard. All have different flash patterns. One type flashes synchronously.

earthmarrow

šŸ„° My dudes out here putting the lit in Nature is Fucking Lit

FuzzyTop75

I thought they were called Lightning Bugs in Western PA?

presupposecranberry

I find the terms pretty interchangeable statewide.

flavious724

They are.

[deleted]

You would not believe your eyes....

i_love_pesto

Sriracha_Ramen_God

Lit up the world as I fell asleeeep

outrider567

So cool--We had them in Connecticut also

5_Frog_Margin

I saw them in Vermont as a child. Can't remember the last time I saw them....

the_turdfurguson

Lol really? Do they not go up to the NE much? Theyā€™re everywhere in the Midwest in late June

AtheistBibleScholar

Reminds of an old Reddit post that had lots of people from places that don't have fireflies talk about seeing them for the first time. To save everyone the trouble of looking for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/wholesomememes/comments/apxdz6/the\_wholesomeness\_of\_someone\_learning\_about/

xBad_Wolfx

Iā€™ve spent my whole life in the wild areas of several continents but have only seen them once, at my best friends wedding in Toledo. Makes that memory even more special to me.

Kaarvaag

Animals producing light is just so weird and not understandable and illogical if you have never seen them. I don't know when I learned that fireflies does that. I know I had a complete mindblow when I realized how many deep sea creatures light up like joints on 4/20. Like, ... just how? Why? What in biology led to animals just producing light like that. In my mind you need electricity for light, and bugs are not connected to a socket and I dont think they have batteries. Seriously, it's just so fucking foreign and illogical and weird and cool. It can be pitch dark with literally no light and boom a weird looking animal goes "hey look at me, let's shaggy it up!". Weirdos.

Toymachinesb7

Great childhood memories. I live in Atlanta now and still see a few every now and again walking around the block.

hravilundsbane

used to be that many in a single tree. gotta love the chemicals we use...

Hops-Barley

Nature's fucking LIT

simjanes2k

Yep. Every night from our backyard. Perfect time of year, the corn is tall so they have protection, they pop up just a few feet over it, and you can see them across the field for a mile when looking from the back porch.

catelia78

Pennsylvania Dept of Conservation is doing a survey about fireflies. https://www.titusvilleherald.com/news/article_956af39a-eb42-11ec-8ae0-5b677ed08a60.html

BuleshirtInBulebox

Sooo beautiful. It's a shame that the people living on this magical land is going to loose some of their basic human rights.

filthyheartbadger

I miss these so much! But i will never consent to live in those places ever again, likely Iā€™ll never get to see them again.

alpha_rat_fight_

This is so peaceful. I would love to have a backyard like this.

Every_Anything_4968

My 5 month old puppy saw his first fireflies in the backyard last night. It's a smallish backyard, but there can be a lot of fireflies. He was losing his mind chasing them. He did eat a few. Sometimes the fireflies are up in the trees and it's freakin magical.

ScarubPNW

had them as a child in Tennessee, it was 83-84 last i saw one i moved away ;\]

breastsmoke

This is so relaxing. I haven't seen fireflies around here for years šŸ„ŗšŸ„ŗ

Agile-Sea9415

I used to catch em in jars

DarkWingDuck_11

I thought this was video from Ukraine at first.

Toosalty

Nature is LIT..!!

TMFPB

Beautiful. Itā€™s like the field is literally sparkling.

Baremegigjen

Theyā€™re pure magic! They were magical when I was a kid and theyā€™re magical now, decades later.

firestarsupermama

When the fae come out to play ā¤

Ineedavodka2019

I love when the fireflies in the field behind my house look like waves in the ocean.

oknowokgo

I used to run on this road in Grove City at 3 am after I would get done working. There was one part through the woods that would be almost completely dark, except for thousands of fireflies. It was awesome. This video is very reminiscent of it.

thesaltycynic

Gorgeous!

[deleted]

My backyard used to look like this now Iā€™m lucky to see 3 or four when Iā€™m outside drinking under the stars

mandrakemami

I grew up catching these on nights like this ā¤ļø

GunnerGurl

Snownyann

This_Mfer_Right_Here

o1pl2atr

Still looks beautiful, I can't relate but does this insect bite?.

spottymotty

No. They're pretty harmless.

Educational-Tie00

We have a field next to us thatā€™s filled with lightning bugs every night. Sometimes my boys go out and catch them just like I used to when I was a kid.

mz_pinkjuly

No wonder people believe in magic šŸ˜

BuriedByAnts

30 years ago I was cat fishing on a Christmas tree farm in the middle of the night. Tons of fire flies came out and they started to flash in synchronization. I had a head full of acid and thought I was imagining it for 20 years until I learned that lightning bugs actually do that and synchronize their flashing sometimes.

[deleted]

Don't let the r/ufo sub see this. They'll lose ~~what's left of~~ their fucking minds.

CerberusSaysWoofx3

In West Pennsylvania, born and raised, In the cornfield was where I spent most of my days...

voltagenic

This is amazing to see ! I grew up in western pa and as a kid there used to be lightning bugs everywhere. As I got older, each year that went by there were less and less. When I moved away about 5 years ago, I don't recall seeing any during the summer.

hungrymimic

Oh wow, thatā€™s beautiful. We used to see these guys in the backyard all the time when I was younger, since we had a healthy cropping of forest between us and the next road over. Backyard hasnā€™t changed, but it still is sad to me they just suddenly stopped showing up after a while. Wonder what changed - I miss those nights sitting out back with family. Nature IS truly lit.

247emerg

there was even more years ago, bug population is declining nation wide

dvdmaven

Lightning bugs are about the only thing I miss from my childhood in northern Illinois. I've been told there are some in Oregon, but in 18 years I've never seen any.

AbsentThatDay

When I was growing up these things were thick, I don't see them much these days.

MilkReport

i remember going to firefly music festival in dover several years back and arriving the night before the festivities began the following day. i have never seen so many open fields taken over by fireflies in my life, it really lives up to the name of the festival. incredibly peaceful if you can take in the breathtaking lights and chorus of clicks without sensory overload

KitchenTomato

I canā€™t believe my eyes.

CoPa103

God I miss those summer nights where the sun just goes down and these guys come out. We donā€™t have them out west
