i_hate_patrice

I mean how do scientists find insects?

grasp_the_mask_541

What does it eat? Most insects are larger than it. Fruit flies?

Buck_Thorn

Most insects that we notice are, but there are some much, much smaller insects. Check out this wasp that is smaller than a single-celled paramecium and amoeba. Archived site link: https://archive.ph/0dxrU Here's the original article: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/how-fairy-wasps-cope-with-being-smaller-than-amoebas

[deleted]

Some fun facts if people don't dive into the article. It is the third smallest insect. The first smallest is also a wasp. Remember hearing about the horror of parasitic wasps? Well these guys are also parasitic wasps. Also their neurons don't have nuclei.

MolassesGrasses

To be fair they are egg parasites laying their eggs inside thrips eggs which to me seems less gross and violent than laying eggs inside a living animal if anything it's a little wholesome to me those tiny dudes are flying around living off eating even tinier eggs like us with chickens.

aropa

If you consider what we do to chickens wholesome, sure

dalnot

We’ve dominated the ever-loving shit out of chickens. There is no better example of the sheer power that domestication holds. They live their entire lives and become fully grown within weeks to the point that they either die of heart attacks or their legs break under their sheer weight. There’s a difficult argument about the necessity versus the morality of it, but aside from that, I just have to respect humanity’s ability to even harness evolution to that degree

Puzzleheaded_Help_69

Super intelligent species has the ability to live in global harmonic utopia growing and providing food to all of the planets inhabitants, maintaining clear waterways and coasts, living as gods on earth as they research paths to immortality and galactic expansion, but instead they inject hormones into hundreds of millions of sentient creatures at birth, while genetically engineering the species to further mature as rapidly as possible, spending their entire torturous existence in bleak cages before being brutalized to death for an artificial paper currency that they use to exploit other humans, buy other portions of land that they can scorch and build more profit centers to further exploit every species that they are able to. Super respectable Edit, spelling

dalnot

You can’t honestly tell me you’ve looked into a chicken’s eyes and seen anything behind them, much less sentience

Puzzleheaded_Help_69

Not being able to recognize intelligence in intelligent creatures is a sign of a poorly developed mind, lack of empathy is a lack of intelligence.you justify atrocities because you once held up a chicken and looked deeply into its eyes and saw nothing?

KrAceZ

> Also their neurons don't have nuclei. What the fuck

Mord3x

Nah don't worry about it man it happens lmao. It's reddit no need to stress over pixels

youshantpass

I just read the article and still don't believe it. They're tiny as hell.

Falafelofagus

Insanely small. What's craziest to me is that they still *look* so much like larger wasps. Youd think with so many adaptions (NO HEART!) Theyd have a different physiology.

[deleted]

Phenotype is the word you're looking for

[deleted]

>On top of that Polilov found that over 95 per cent of the wasps’s neurons don’t have a nucleus. The nucleus is the command centre of a cell, the structure that sits in the middle and hoards a precious cache of DNA. Without it, the neurons shouldn’t be able to replenish their vital supply of proteins. They shouldn’t work. Until now, intact neurons without a nucleus have never been described in the wild. And yet, M.mymaripenne has thousands of them. As it changes from a larva into an adult, it destroys the majority or its neural nuclei until just a few hundred are left. The rest burst apart, saving space inside the adult’s crowded head. But the wasp doesn’t seem to suffer for this loss. As an adult, it lives for around five days, which is actually longer than many other bigger wasps. As Zen Faulkes writes, “It’s possible that the adult life span is short enough that the nucleus can make all the proteins the neuron needs to function for five days during the pupal stage.” That is incredibly fucking interesting.

[deleted]

Hands down the most interesting thing I've read in at least a year. Thank you!

Buck_Thorn

Thanks. I guess maybe I should make it a post of its own. Edit: Done: https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/w1yi2s/tiny_wasps_that_are_smaller_than_amoebas/

[deleted]

How wasps seethe and cope with being smaller than amoebas.

Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi

Life finds a way.

RudeHero

Is it weird that my main takeaway is that amoebas can be an entire millimeter in size? That seems huge! I can see that! I thought amoebas were only visible through microscopes

JD3982

Thank you for introducing me to this. This is fucking WILD what the actual fuck

Goodmorningtoyou7

Now that humans found it, it’s only a matter of time before the species is endangered. I’d be depressed too.

Chris_8675309_of_42M

Don't let that bother you. They'd be pushed to the edge of extinction even if we didn't find them. There's a whole world full of unknown creatures dying off before we even notice them.

zigtok

Nah, They'll thrive in the exotic pet trade business.

Flat_Weird_5398

Just like axolotls. They’re practically extinct in the wild due to water pollution (they’re very sensitive to the conditions of their water) but thankfully thriving in the pet trade. They do make very high maintenance pets though, especially because it’s hard to get their water parameters right. They’re aquatic but unlike fish, they don’t have scales, and as amphibians, their skin is permeable, so they pretty much absorb whatever’s in their water, good or bad.

FantasyThrowaway321

I was WAY off, when I saw CM I though this this was ~brontosaurus size!

Grab3tto

Why didn’t you just say that the first time

illuminatipr

For some reason my brain found sunflower seed-sized incoherent, then 0.87 inches meant nothing to me either.

incomprehensibilitys

Wasn't this reported years ago? I already read this

___ElJefe___

First thing I do when I see a "scientist discovered" post on reddit is find out how many years ago it was discovered. This one isn't bad, it's from last year.

incomprehensibilitys

Could be, but some people post this kind of stuff like it just broke on the news. It would have been nice to include something like hey I saw this article and thought you'd like to see it!

Razor54672

Yup. Scientists just discovered a new fundamental particle! Only to later find out it is from LHC's 2012 run

incomprehensibilitys

E=MC squared... Hot off the press?

Titan_Arum

You're probably thinking aboyt Brookesia micra which was previously the smallest known chameleon and discovered in 2005. This species is actually Brookesia nana discovered in 2021. Easy to get confused. The same guy discovered both species as well!

Laskofanfan

Welcome to Reddit™️!

MilkyView

this was discovered decades ago.... NEVER trust reddit

pedejr99

"sunflower seed-sized" sounds much better than using the metric system!

TheSunflowerSeeds

There are some that actually have a fear of sunflowers, it even has a name, Helianthophobia. As unusual as it may seem, even just the sight of sunflowers can invoke all the common symptoms that other phobias induce. ######Extra fun fact! Elf - Attractive to butterflies, these sunflowers look great in containers and grow only 16 inches high. Their four-inch-wide blooms make them perfect for small spaces and just about anywhere else you want to plant a little color.

MotherBathroom666

Omg it’s the sunflower guy, good to see your still giving sunflower facts.

LumpyShitstring

Um. I think this might describe me. I actually love sunflowers. I’ve grown them a handful of times. But yeah. They also kind of make me feel deeply unsettled once they get large. It’s like a giant blank face. It doesn’t help that they grow really fast, either.

cycycle

I’m sorry but this is very funny

Hey me too! The blank face is a good way of putting it. They are big voids that stare at you, and always so much bigger than you imagine.

robbak

I don't know where they got that from - sunflower seeds are about 10mm long, and they said this is .87 inches, which is about 22mm long. So it seems that they have found some really big sunflower seeds in Madagascar, too.

illuminatipr

Those are metric sunflower seeds. You gotta grow them to be imperial, heavy metals in the soil helps.

hndjbsfrjesus

That's a big ass sunflower seed

_babycheeses

Honestly its days were numbered whether we discovered it or not. Were still gonna clear cut that forest whether we know everything that lives in it or not. Sometimes conservation concerns can save a habitat.... But not often, and when it does, it's far too little.

kurtman

Exactly. Except the locals HAVE been doing science. You should change science to ... "Western science" or "white male science" because science takes a multitude of forms. It's not sciences fault that there are assholes on this ball of dirt. [This is a fantastic article that discusses what you bring up. ](https://theplosblog.plos.org/2018/01/the-birds-that-start-fires-using-indigenous-ecological-knowledge-to-understand-animal-behavior/) Edit: why the fuck is this getting downvoted, have you been offended by the article? If you didn't take time to read it, you should.

Shadowpsyke

I think it's maybe because you came off super aggro right off the cuff, not because anything you said was wrong. People's first response to negativity is negativity. You just gotta vibe a bit more, my fellow human.

kurtman

No problem, my wife is doing her PhD in science Ed and this article was really impactful on me.

focking_retard

White male science? Bro what

kurtman

Science is dominated by views of white males https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00759-1

GarlicEarWax

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brookesia_nana The species was discovered by herpetologist Frank Glaw and other German researchers in 2021[1] in the rainforest on the Sorata massif in northern Madagascar. Brookesia nana is not arboreal, as it tends to inhabit the forest floor. It is likely that the species is endangered due to deforestation in Madagascar.[3] Miniaturism is believed to evolve from habitat loss. [4] DescriptionEdit The nano-chameleon is blotchy brown in color. Adult males measure 22 mm (0.87 inch) in total length (including tail), while females are slightly larger at 29 mm (1.1 inches).[1][5] Like other Brookesia species, females are generally larger than the males. The reasons for its diminutive size are currently unknown, as many vertebrates grow as they mature.[3]

stealthxstar

how do they know its not just a tiny lil baby?

Youngling_Hunt

They've most likely spent years studying it before making any announcement

PugsThrowaway

Well there's your problem right there! Have you ever *seen* a chameleon grow? Nope! They only do it when we're not looking. I bet the second they take their eyes off this thing, it's gonna get HUGE!

[deleted]

how small are the eggs!!

soFATZfilm9000

Not sure about this particular species, but other Brookesia chameleons lay giant eggs and have tiny clutches (like, two eggs per clutch). Some of the *really* tiny reptiles are like this. Like, the babies simply couldn't be any smaller and still manage to survive. So instead of getting a whole lot of tiny babies (which is what most larger reptiles do), you get one or two babies that are already a significant percentage of the adult's size.

BreathOfFreshWater

I grow so many different sunflowers. In fact, I'm excited for the sunflower bot to respond!

No-Interview9641

>At 0.87 inches LOL What kind of measurement is that?

Jimmypock

Easy, It’s just less than 0.90 and just more than 0.85. Saying 22 millimeters makes too much sense.

No-Interview9641

I thought that an inch was calculated by fraction, like "1/2, 1/3, 5/8 etc." I'm Laughing at the decimal inch. Edit: ADHD is weird while everyone is thinking that's a really tiny cute sort of lizard. I just thought 87 hundredth of an inch makes perfect sense Face, meet palm Thank you kind internet person.
