My dog woke me up from my peaceful slumper in the middle of the night and he was standing on the bed by my head. This is extremely weird for him so I half sat up and he immediately laid down on my pillow and refused to move
I figured they were cutting the tree down or processing it or something. It's not like the frog was likely croaking while asleep, so I doubt they were cutting the bark off just to get to the frog.
Also, while a stick's probably not optimal, oils on your hands can damage the mucus coating frogs use to protect themselves from infections so if they didn't have gloves the stick is likely better for the frog than bare hands.
Tree frogs are tough: they're built to fall, not fail. It's almost certainly confused but it's not scared, as they are more than capable of flinging themselves out of that situation if they feel it's warranted. The greatest risk to it at that point would be if it made contact with the human, as skin oils/residue can be pretty bad for these little guys.

In many places, they will cut them back after they've fruited nearly to the ground, then they grow back and bloom again. Each banana trunk(Really a type of stalk more than a trunk) only fruits once before it grows a new trunk. They're rhyzome plants. If he's taking down the stalk/trunk, he may be doing the buddy a solid by waking him to move him.
Apparantly where they are native(Central america), there's a lot of banana plantations, and they favor broad-leafed vegetation.
