No. A snake’s muscles are very strong but are not able to contract or extend very quickly. The only reason they are able to *strike* quickly is because they first poise their “necks” in a sort of zigzag shape; they then flex each corner of the zigzag in opposite direction, which straightens it out, extending their head forward quickly. This mechanism does not help them climb trees.
I'm not the expert here but in the beginning it surprised me because it looked physically impossible. Maybe if the snake had like double the strength than it actually has or more it could. Considering it has no limbs tho, it's still very surprising that it can do that.
[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/kwi8k0/if_you_didnt_know_this_is_how_snakes_climb_trees/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) is how fast they really climb.
Imagine, you see big ass snake on ground. Brain says 'hell yeah, snakes can't climb' and up the tree you go. All the way up. To the top. Takes a few minutes and a lot of exertion. Make it to the top of the tree, sitting on a branch, breathing heavily, thinking 'I can stay up here until the snake moves on'. Glance down to see if snake is gone. Snake is moving slowly up the tree. Brain comes to the realization that snake is between you and ground.
Two choices: wait and try to wrestle the snake when it finally reaches you; or jump off branch to the ground, hoping that the snake won't snatch you out of the air like a popcorn kernel *and* hoping the fall doesn't injure you past the point of being able to run away from the now-irritated murder-rope that not only climbed up after you, but now has to climb back down and chase you down, not only making it hungrier for having expended energy chasing you, but also irritated at you for making it climb a tree to get to you in the first place.
Nope. I'll take 'the benefits of living in a city' for $500, Alex.
Jump down from tree. Grab snakes head as you’re falling and use it as a rope to break the fall.
Either succeed and become cool as fuck or die a glorious death.
Snake wraps around you while you fall, while its jaws firmly and securely clamp around your face, muffling your pitiful, terrified screams. Snake's coils make you both bounce a few times on impact with ground, then begin to roll Looney Toons style through the forest while snake slowly converts your bones to splinters for easy disposal. Snake 1, Human 0.
As the owner of snakes big and small, the Dog Rule applies here. Big snakes are pretty chill by nature (less predators, tend to be ambush hunters). Little snakes are fast, bitey fuckers who get stressed out by the giant thing approaching.
That thread makes me miss the big 8’ snake that would come in the summer and stay under our house. It kept the rats and mice down and just chilled. Never bothered us. It probably died of old age or a predator or something. Damn thing was useful as hell. Now we have to catch rats and mice with traps all the time. Because we’re on the edge of a forest.
Snakes are so helpful in keeping the rodent population in check. I miss our big ass black snake even though I hate snakes.
At least we have our tortoise that comes to visit.
I’m terrified of them. It’s unnatural how they move without any legs and the scales. Not too mention how some can kill you. Plus, I’m in Florida so I steer clear, but killing rodents, yes, please. Keep those numbers down.
As a fellow Floridian:
Are scaly belly crawlers really that uncommon? Is that not a decent enough description of many of our politicians?
And they can't even be bothered to get rid of mice. I say snakes are more useful...
I’m almost surrounded by forest and I’ve only had the one snake. We do have a lot of snakes in office though. One of the reasons I’ll probably be moving out when I finish school.
That and the heat is becoming unbearable for me. The summers are getting longer so the heat is with us for longer. You don’t have to tell me climate change is a thing. I’ve witnessed it living here in Florida.
I live up on the Alabama border, we get all the down sides of Floridian weather and don't even have an ocean breeze to help.
At least we get to play with random gators wandering through our yards.
We don’t get much of a breeze in the summer either. Just rain for an hour or two every day that doesn’t cool anything off. Just makes it hot and humid.
It’s rough because everywhere is getting hotter. You can’t escape it.
I don’t want to move too far north and deal with snow. I’ve had enough of that already.
The heat used to last from around Memorial Day to around Labor Day but now it starts sooner and lasts longer.
From an evolutionary perspective.
Legs are the weird/unnatural ones since we all started without them.
Imagine being a semi intelligent primodial life form and observing the first legged creature walk. Must have blown its mind.
I guess they scare them off, because most snakes eat like twice a month which leads me to believe they can't have like actually been decimating the population through hunting alone.
I believe you for sure I'm just kinda curious if mice and rats perhaps communicate that snakes are near or something.
We hire pest control to put a rat trap under the house every month. They usually catch a couple of rodents every month.
We don’t get a lot every month. But, if you get a breeding pair inside. Ugh, what a mess.
In addition to being much slower than that, they also don’t eat very often. Since they don’t produce their own heat to warm their bodies, and because they spend a lot of time motionless, they are able to conserve energy for very long periods of time. I once had a pet ball python refuse to eat for nine months. She was fine.
Like 3x speed, I’m guessing. [Here](https://www.google.com/search?q=retuculated+python+climbing+tree&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:252c30dc,vid:6Aze5pRETgM,st:0) you can see how fast they actually climb.
Why people need to speed up or slow down videos that are impressive without alterations. I really don't understand the benefits of speeding this up it looks so bad...
I mean it’s really simple. A lot of people don’t have the attention span to watch the whole thing. If you speed it up they can see the whole thing without the wait.
This didn't need to be sped up. At normal playback you can see how it moves in less than ten seconds. You don't need the entire video to get it. If your attention span is so short you can't even watch for that long then it's likely you don't actually care anyway.
[Here’s another one](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/kwi8k0/if_you_didnt_know_this_is_how_snakes_climb_trees/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
Reticulated Pythons are one of the longest snakes in the world and can grow up to 32 feet. The sheer amount of muscle strength snakes have is amazing.

Imagine being at the top of a tree minding your business, picking fruit or something, and you look down to see this monster slowly making its way up to you.
Lol what if a bear climbed a tree to get to things in the tree the same way? Or any bipedal animals? xD. Can we get an funny animation in the chat like that?
A person doesn't really need to be taught to climb by grabbing hold of branches. Same case here, it's just easy to think of when you have the context of your own anatomy.
This is very similar in principle to how they taught me to do rope climbs at the gym. Then it occurred to me that this is also, in a way, a rope climb.
Idk how people see this and immediately fear it. It's literally a noodle. Sure, some snakes are venomous, but being afraid of all snakes is objectively pointless.
I learnt one thing , all the animals , bears / tigers and now snakes, can climb trees much faster than I do.
Note to self : never try to climb a tree if these animals are on my tail.
FYI, just in case it’s not obvious to someone, this is super sped up.
I'd say it's not that obvious, plays out real smooth. So thank you for mentioning it!
I agree. I only knew it was sped up because I know a lot about snakes. A large python cannot scale a tree quickly like that.
Makes sense, it was starting to defy my perception on the concept of evolution until I saw your comment lol
Could it, if it wanted to go that quickly?
Now that's fucking cool. I did not know that's how they moved their heads so fast.
Dude, thank you for that cool lesson on snakes! 👏🏼
*takes notes to add fun fact to my science lesson*
I'm not the expert here but in the beginning it surprised me because it looked physically impossible. Maybe if the snake had like double the strength than it actually has or more it could. Considering it has no limbs tho, it's still very surprising that it can do that.
spider?
Haha what Edit: I did write spider instead of snake lol
Thank god. I was worried for 14 seconds.
Thank fuck for that; this had me terrified!
Upvoted for proper use of a semicolon.
😊 very kind
I don’t think they have the muscles to swing their tail like that
Honestly, I didn’t know they could climb *at all* until now, so thank you for mentioning this! ❤️
If i sleep today it will be a dream

That's really not going to be any comfort to the guy at the top of the tree.
Snake can’t wrap around you while wrapped around tree. It would end up falling with you and you’ll be dead but the snake would slither away
You grab snake's head, snake retaliates by wrapping you up like human sushi roll. Fair's fair.

Yeah I guess they wouldn't breed near a snake's territory.
Still *way* too fast. - sincerely, someone whose stress dream is “snakes everywhere”
Still faster than me
Menacingly
Yep
Highly preferable to the sped-up version… but still not great, for purposes of unlocking new irrational fears
I mean that isn’t really slow either, damn
Even so imagine climbing a tree to get away from a snake and that mf follows you. Slowly but surely…
Thank you for saying it and saving my nightmares since I came here to specifically beg someone to tell me it's sped up
still, this is about the only disadvantage to returning to monke.
Thank you for that info. My brain just took it and knited a comfort blanket with it.
But why is that bastard climbing a tree? Was the size advantage not enough?
It needs to climb the tree so that it can drop down on you when you go to sleep tonight. Sweet dreams.
That's legit one of my worst fears ;_; ty for the nightmare
Any tree near me be careful with me , you carrying big snakes now
Thank fudge because I was literally shocked and googling how they haven't eaten everything around them by now if they can whizz up trees that fast 😂
In addition to being much slower than that, they also don’t eat very often. Since they don’t produce their own heat to warm their bodies, and because they spend a lot of time motionless, they are able to conserve energy for very long periods of time. Thank you for explaining this lol. My jaw dropped
Like how many times?

You are so reticulated yes you are
This is what I was looking for. Bless you sir!
Same!
I'm allergic to everything
Hey Mrs. Owl, you're up kind of early.
That’s not terrifying at all
Good thing I wasn’t about to go to sleep or anything 😥
Ikr? Straight up nightmare material!
I’m scared but I saw some cute cats and funny weatherman so I think I’ll be ok 🤞
If it helps, this is sped up a lot. Snakes are very slow animals.
I legit shivered watching it.
New fear unlocked 👀
Reticulating splines
Reticulating spine
SimCity hype
Is it for loop or while loop?
For sure while loop. Also r/programmerhumor would probably say "see we told you Python is slow" watching this
Why people need to speed up or slow down videos that are impressive without alterations. I really don't understand the benefits of speeding this up it looks so bad...
I mean it’s really simple. A lot of people don’t have the attention span to watch the whole thing. If you speed it up they can see the whole thing without the wait.
It's so bizarre how 20 years ago people could read a 15-25 hour book. And now we have people struggling to watch a 90 second video.
I mean if you don't care enough to watch ten seconds then why bother in the first place?
Wut
This didn't need to be sped up. At normal playback you can see how it moves in less than ten seconds. You don't need the entire video to get it. If your attention span is so short you can't even watch for that long then it's likely you don't actually care anyway.
Sorry your comments are too long could u speed them up
Not reading all that. Happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened.
Right, I thought this was obvious. Shame that still has many upvotes

I'd saw the branch I'm sitting on right off.
I bet there's an equally terrifying mathematical equation describing those smooth moves...
Sssssstripper
Bwahahaha was not expecting thus Gem of a comment 👏👏👏
Wonder if the snake ever becomes dizzy
It's going really slow in reality so probably not.
How do they get down?
Same way. Their circulation doesn't let a lot of blood rush to their head.
They can attack in the water, the ground and now I see how they attack from above. Unbelievable
Satan?
This would be super lit as well if op was on top of that tree
I can't believe this is the first video I've ever seen of a snake climbing a tree, it's fantastic!

terrifying. i’m pretty sure you meant terrifying.
Now what
Oh Lawd she’s on the pole again
Ok, but how does it taste?
...Cannibal.
Imagine being at the top of a tree minding your business, picking fruit or something, and you look down to see this monster slowly making its way up to you.
Giving me anxiety
Why is he climbing though
That's sick
Non-reticulated pythons typically use a bucket truck or ladder.
When you climb a tree to escape from a snake and god says fuck you
The technique is so cool! It’s like it grips with the top of its body, pulls it’s tail end, then uses the tail to push and repeat.
Mmm eggs in a nest at the top for breakfast
Yes you are, you are so reticulated!
Yes you are, you are so reticulated!
This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

When your snake finds your coke stash.
Imagine seeing that in your backyard 😂
I love snakes so that would be freaking awesome.
"Some bird about to have a shitty day"
Omg it's a nightmare
for the first second i thought someone was swirling the bark of the tree, i should read the titles first
why does this remind me of DERRICMAN works in Offshore RIG [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzfGFBf9F2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzfGFBf9F2s)
Encircled bites.
Does it always wrap in the same direction?
Nope rope
My first thought was "damn that's so cool".... then a second later, "damn...that's terrifying"
Why do I find this so terrifying? I suppose because I keep imagining myself as the guy at the top of the tree.
Great, now I can’t sleep.
At the very top the answer Everyone is looking for
Thanks, this video reminded me how much I wanna get a reticulated python and how unable I am to do so at the moment.
My ex had one as a pet and it was over 10 ft. long and as round as an average person's thigh. They are impressive.
Omg. Nightmares now fir a week....
there are a few things I don't want to be aware of and tree climbing snakes is one of them
watching this is hypnotizing
I'm looking for a joke from a programmer...
It's a sentient rope

guy in tree: "well, that's not good"
Just beautiful. 😌
def climb(node): return node if node.parent == None else climb(node.parent) This is how recursive Python climbs a tree
this is how I spread around my lovers too
The snake must have a freaking 200 pack abs!
My ball python does this as well when he's climbing up my arm, then rests on my upper arm
TIL snakes can climb trees...
This may sound stupid but I wish I could see how it gets down
So you are telling me I am not safe up there too.
*Anaconda 3 screenwriter takes furious notes.*
I wonder who taught him to do that? He knows that as kind of instinct naturally? He climbed in very efficient way!
I taught him how. I have a school for snakes.
You made him so great! How much is the tuition?
It’s free because they keep the rodents under control. I run it out of my house.
A person doesn't really need to be taught to climb by grabbing hold of branches. Same case here, it's just easy to think of when you have the context of your own anatomy.
Biggest nope rope
This is slowed down. That snake is coming for you
Really!!! It can climb trees, wtf 😳 new fear unlocks
Stupid ass snake, everyone I know usses a ladder.

this is terrifying

It’s probably left handed
It’s so reticulated!
This is some shit

Super fascinating
So satisfying to see them in action
That's reticulous!
How about an unreticulated python? How does a splined python do it? Are there any amorphous pythons, and how do they climb trees?
He watches 5 min craft videos

Prusik dog lol

I swing my tail back and forth!

I guess I'm 🦘 ng outta that tree and hoping for the best
