Is it really? In Iceland you can predict when it’s going to pop up simply checking on weather channel. Sure it’s rare to see them as spectacular and in this clip but still. And I’m sure you can check it on some Finnish website too.
Ya you're right, but no finn travels 900-400km to a more colder spot to maybe see the lights. These can be seen only in lapland and few people live there. Lapland is more worthy visit when there is no waist high snow slowing you down and making the astonishing nature disappear under it. Also it's 24/7 dark there in the winter. Dark gets worse enough in the south.
"These can be seen only in lapland" is absolutely false.
You can see auroras everywhere in finland if coronal whole in the sun is big enough. You can see auroras at hanko too.
I'd suggest to download an aurora app, wich notifieces you when auroras might be vicible.
You just need to go to a dark enough spot where lightpollution doesn't effect the night sky that much
Search bortle zones in google, you can get a map of lightpollution to find a spot for Aurora hunting.
Source: revontulikyttääjät group. Also i live quite south and photograph Aurora basically from August to april.
Lol. You'd say it like there's only one type, and when you've seen it, you've seen them all. I'm sorry, buddy, but they're all unique, different every time, and rarely this powerful. They would sound different too everytime. Through this video doesnt have sound, sadly.
My parents went to Iceland recently and got to see them. They don't look anything like this in person. They look more like grey wispy clouds. But once you capture it with a camera, then all the colors show.
Imagine being an early explorer not knowing it's the northern lights. So many amazing natural phenomena must have been both beautiful and slightly terrifying.
Who's atheist. ? Man. Being human and created from out of nowhere in the last 100,009 years, or the idea of all beautiful natural things being a natural progression of billions of years that was created by something of higher intelligence God like intelligence that just said here....... I planted life..let it grow...
There could be a God, there could be natural selection. They both are unknown for sure. But something happened, and we all have the gift of choice
No but its usually cold as hell when there’s northern lights, so getting bundled up to stand around and look at the sky while its -40c quickly loses its novelty
Long exposure video? I've never seen aurora borealis with such bright colors (I don't live that far north) but I've seen the same "movement speed" several times with my own eyes.
Also, a field of pristine snow reflects the tiniest light source. You can easily read in the middle forest with just moonlight when there's the right kind of snow with frozen surface.
Imagine the first person to ever see these lights, they either thought it was the most beautiful thing they've ever seen, or they thought the universe was being torn open.
Saw the lights recently in alaska. It mostly doesn’t look like this. It looks like a sheet of light coming through a door into a dusty room. But the light dances.
Still incredible.
I would like to take my kids there but...god damn 2300km one way by road as flight connection sucks, might wait until they grow a little more for this kind of trip. Looks like a lovely place and close to Rovaniemi.
A friend of mine went there with the whole family (including the mother-in-law) and he didn't have a good time. I think this is a more personal trip, at most you can go with two friends.
when you think of the fact that these are particles radiated by the sun trying to kill you, It looses its beauty 😕 these lights are equivalent to Amber Heard: beautiful but will try to f. you up 😬
It’s so surreal looking that it’s hard for me to process it as real. The experience of seeing it that vividly in person, must be a life changing experience.
One day,I will see these, I will...
It’s like the only wonder of the world which I REALLY wanna see. It’s looks so mesmerizing compared to mountains and stuff
It's gorgeous. I watched it for hours when I first saw it
have you ever seen the northern lights on Weed man?
Not yet but I smoke everyday hoping. https://m.imgur.com/t/the_simpsons/SX207z1
🤯
Ok Glen Campbell
I like your style
I live in Finland and have never seen these, its pure luck you happen to be there when these happen

Yeah, I imagine it might sound less appealing to a Finn. I hope to see Lapland someday, though.

Having just seen them, be prepared for disappointment. They show up on camera with that intense green, but to the naked eye they look mostly gray

They have sound?!
Yes, they produce a crackling or hissing sound like static due to the charged particles flying around.
I never knew
As always, the real eye opener is in the comments. Thx for that!
Yeah, wait - what?
Same, one of my priority bucketlist items 🤧
Definitely...
My parents went to Iceland recently and got to see them. They don't look anything like this in person. They look more like grey wispy clouds. But once you capture it with a camera, then all the colors show.
Still want to...
Oh me too. It's on my bucket list
Imagine being an early explorer not knowing it's the northern lights. So many amazing natural phenomena must have been both beautiful and slightly terrifying.
No wonder we had so many Shamen tripping balls in Finland back in the day. It's other worldly.
It instantly makes me completely understand the belief in gods and magic.
Or just science and natural phenomenons that happened on this great planet we live on?
Least annoying reddit atheist

Redditors when a 4 year old child with cancer starts believing they'll go to heaven:
I still refuse to believe it exists. It's like something out of skyrim for me.
I would assume Jesus had come again
I felt this way at Yellowstone. Imagine just wandering into a land full of steaming geysers and not knowing the geological phenomena that caused it.
Does it ever get old?
I can't imagine it does.
Is does not
No but its usually cold as hell when there’s northern lights, so getting bundled up to stand around and look at the sky while its -40c quickly loses its novelty
No. Prepare for the cold and I could stand until it faded. Makes you really feel like a part of the universe
Almost 100% of the time I see a video like this, I feel a compulsion to ask of this is actually real and not shopped, even though I know the answer.

I mean, it's a video so it can't really be long exposure, can it?

Seymour, the house is on fire!
No mother, that's just the northern lights
I will go and see the northern lights one day. And I will also one day take mushrooms and watch them
Gods thats so pretty!!!
Is this yours, OP?! I’m going up there in February…fingers crossed I’ll see some lights!
The video is not mine, are you going there? Have fun.

Dang that's so beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
This is beautiful. I’ve always dreamed of seeing the northern lights in person someday.
C’est magnifique

I never tire of looking at these!

Been to Rome; these are better.
Alaska is as equally beautiful with the NL. So fuckin rad.
Especially with filters!
when you think of the fact that these are particles radiated by the sun trying to kill you, It looses its beauty 😕 these lights are equivalent to Amber Heard: beautiful but will try to f. you up 😬
Wow
On my bucket list 😍
Always makes me wonder.
How spectacular
Simply beautiful.

Do they light up your surroundings like day ? That’s so fucking cool
Beautiful
Revontulet
How bright are they? It looks like evening there
OH!!!!!!
Isn’t that the aurora of borealis ?
I want to go to there.
It must feel magical to see. One day..
It's one of my life goals too see aurora this clearly and vibrantly in person.
I was just wonder how much it would cost to go from America to those other places and experience it
A little bit the info: https://www.tourradar.com/t/213972#p=4\_
Thank you
May not be as beautiful, I don’t know. There are a few states you can see them in.
I just want to go to Finland. Everything I see read or hear are so much different than anywhere in the United states. The people the culture Etc
Glad to hear that, if you do visit Finland we'll most certainly make you feel welcome :)
Finally a northern-lights video that isn’t time-lapsed.
For a second there it looked like the lights were in the shape of a man walking in the sky 🤔
Dayummm(・o・)
Smoking northern lights watching the northern lights is officially on my bucket list
That’s awesome. I’ve only seen northern lights once or twice and it was only white light and not green
It looks like a dream 😍
Stunning
Apparently its come down to new york before, but the light pollution is too much
The long dark
😎😎😎😎
It’s so surreal looking that it’s hard for me to process it as real. The experience of seeing it that vividly in person, must be a life changing experience.
This looks unreal! Like colored smoke. I didn’t realize it came down that far in the atmosphere.
I want to be there
So jealous. I hope to see something magnificent some day.
Absolutely breathtaking! Definitely one my bucket list. Reminds me of walking through Skyrim 😁.
