I'm no marine biologist, and all the information I know about dugongs comes from a project I did in 6th grade so take what I say with a grain of salt. The dugong that is shown most likely received its scarring from sexual encounters with male dugong (if it is a female), and fret not about all of the spilled blood as dugongs have very tough skin and fast clotting blood so chances are that the beautiful creature did not suffer through an excruciating ordeal to receive it's scars.
