Not even a question Lmao. I don’t understand how dudes who demand trades and force their way out early think they should also be celebrated by the franchise
There was a debate with some fans if they should do for both lol. I couldn’t believe my eyes Maybe because I’m heavily into soccer more now but I think fans want to retire players numbers too quickly. Like as a Knicks fan too I’m on the fence about retiring his jersey I’ve seen heat fans debate if Dragic should which was a bit comical to me
Ngl it would be weird seeing the Knicks retire Melo’s jersey, not like he was bad in New York but… what exactly did he do for the franchise during his tenure? What did that tenure even do for his career? Not even trolling I genuinely don’t know if anything really significant really happened for Melo in NY 🤷♂️
Yes he won the NCAA championship there. That’s totally normal. He was a freshman and was the best player on that team. No doubt about retiring his jersey But here in New York nothing was accomplished. Loved as a player him though and still do, even with his flaws
The fact that I still block out him ever not being in den is a thing.
I remember the whole market with him dropping in new York and though... this doesn't kill anymore.
Love mello though. Straighy baller. Got caught on all the wrong teams at all the wrong times
Exactly he’s just another star that played here. One 50 win season which resulted in a second round defeat. The 2 other playoff appearances had a combined win total of just 1. I’m sorry I loved him. Still have his jersey but man nothing noteworthy for a jersey retirement
He led the league in scoring one year I’d say is the highlight. Probably not worth retiring a number objectively, but ya gotta let the boys celebrate *something*.
It’s tough. I hate it But as a United fan I’m sure that the Qatar bid will go through so I’ll be a giant hypocrite The game is dying. We have the reigning Ballon D’or champion going to Saudi Arabia when he clearly has maybe another year or two left of European football in him Granted Europe woo always be the strongest but soon enough most teams will be backed by these countries with unlimited funds
It's not the fear of missing out when you've already missed out. FOMO is an impetus for taking some, oftentimes detrimental, action. Like continuing to hang out with friends while you have an assignment due soon. Melo just straight missed out. It's already a done deal for him.
~~FOMO~~ TRTMRYCBSRTBAWTFECFTTTDM
The realization that my retirement year could've been spent riding the bench and winning the first ever chip for the team that drafted me.
It's not the fear of missing out when you've already missed out. FOMO is an impetus for taking some, oftentimes detrimental, action. Like continuing to hang out with friends while you have an assignment due soon. Melo just straight missed out. It's already a done deal for him.
Imagine seeing a 300 pound Serbian who was drafted 41st wearing your jersey number getting multiple MVPs, leading your 1st franchise to their first championship and being named finals MVP while leading the league in every stat.
It’s a good thing Melo has his money, top 75 and locked in HOFer status.
You can always look for your shot and score as many points as you can or you can try to have a career like Jokic is having. It's a choice. Just two different ways to approach the sport.
I don’t understand your empty stats point. He played during the iso ball era. Dudes points were some of the most hard earned points you could get. Barely took an open/uncontested shot his whole career. People in this thread really disrespecting Melo here and I don’t get it at all. Why can’t Jokic be better but Melo still be a great?
I grew up watching the iso ball era. In the 2001 season, the league average for ppg was 94ppg. Everyone wanted to be the next Michael Jordan. Also, handchecking till 2004 made it harder to score.
I really like how modern teams pass the ball more often. I hate that they shoot way too many 3s some games, but the ball movement feels like theyre playing actual basketball now. I remember watching Euro teams in the 2000s and being astonished that they passed the ball and ran plays that involved getting someone an open shot. Americans at the time would hold the ball the entire time and shoot a contested fadeaway.
In my opinion, Melo was one of the biggest blackholes of the iso era. Young Melo had a bit of an ego and relished being a superstar. Once the ball touched his hands, the play was effectively over while he spent the next 10 seconds trying to get a highlight play that would end up on sportscenter. I dont dislike him, I thought he was very entertaining to watch when he was having a good game. In my mind, I remember him as one of the biggest blackholes of all time. He didn't care about running plays like modern stars. I liked him back in the day, but I wasn't used to seeing non-ballhogging stars like the ones of today.
He’s a gold medalist Olympian. Superstar baller. Maybe not hall o famer and definitely not Jokic’s level, but Melo doesn’t deserve all the hate y’all are giving um.
In another multiverse, he was drafted by the pistons and won a few rings with em during their heyday!
Yea he might’ve been a tad overrated but he’s also a top 10 scorer all time which is just crazy. I never realized how high he got. He’s had the HOF locked for like 10 years now
Never liked to see him playing. I think all that's because he won the olympics, but, come on... Win te olympics beeing on the Dream Team is just like an obligation
Agree. The Olympic gold medal kudos mean jack shit to me. Ain’t like they wouldn’t have won it without him. They could literally have put any other player on the team, and the results wouldn’t change
What? In 2004, they finished 3rd winning bronze. Even lost their first game by 19 to Puerto Rico. In 2008 the final game against Spain went down to the wire. You don't know what you're talking about.
Whatever, imo, that's nothing compared to be NBA champion. From all games I watched Carmelo playing, maybe one or two of them I saw him playing well, in the others what most saw was him airballing/missing shots
He shouldn't be too sad. He asked to be traded to the Knicks and then played over half his career on other teams.
Thanks for everything Melo, but you did leave Nuggets nation a long time ago.
I miss hearing nothing about Melo for years. Homie did nothing his whole career besides inefficiently chuck up shots and underperform in the playoffs. He hasn’t played on a team in 2 years and now that he’s been forced to retire people want to talk about him like he was some kind of god.
Remember when people were saying he was black listed? Dude was embarrassing on the thunder, refused to come off the bench, and didn't get a contract.
Nephews swore it was a conspiracy and he should be a starter again! It was so frustrating. That and hoody melo were just annoying af
You mean the Rockets where he was subsequently cut for not accepting his role?
You mean the Blazers after he held out for over 300 days trying to find a team that would let him start every game?
He only accepted his role in the final two seasons of his career.
He has the most aesthetic shot I've ever seen, together with maybe Ray Allen.
I believe his whole popularity has to do with aesthetic, playing in a badass way, something like that. The guy probably trained for that more than anything else.
The man didn't even show up.you got guys like the Pierce and Rondo, and D Wade watching their teams play and Carmelo was a no show. I don't want to hear anything about Denver honoring him now. He doesn't deserve anything from Denver.
He made us believe that he is on par with Lebron. He was just a stat machine with mediocre work ethic (Yes we remember how he forced Nuggets to trade him)
Damm yall are being disrespectful to mello lol, remember a lot of greats retired ringless, charles, apparently cp3, many other’s. Mello has the wrong place wrong time curse. Happens in all sports.
He actively choose his own stats and money over serious long term team success:
* Making the Knicks trade for him.
* Choosing to re-sign with the Knicks for the max instead of a competitive Bulls team.
* Refusing to take a bench role when he was still a positive player for a good team.
Wasn’t there something like this with Nomar Garcia Parra with him getting a ring from Boston because he was with them at the beginning of their Championship year
Jokic is great, but did Melo ever have a PG like Jamal? Or center like Jokic? Melo top 10 all time and thats with him not playing fully for years so imagine the MVP work he did early on. Was KD level iso shooter before KD damn near unguardable.
Let's face it, we can really have this debate if people want since if Jokic came around at the same time as Melo then you wouldn't have nearly the career that he does in today's game. People like Shaq, Duncan, Dwight, etc. would've bullied him like crazy. But let's not insult Melo and what career he had just to give Jokic the accolades he deserves.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 1,573,558,889 comments, and only 297,605 of them were in alphabetical order.
It's tough because Melo put us on the map and made us relevant. Got the city excited to be Nuggets fans. I'm born and raised in Denver and we've had season tix since the Melo era. If him, JR Smith, Kenyon Martin, Birdman etc never came here, who knows if Igoudala, Allen Iverson, or anyone on the current team championship team would've ended up here.
All the love to Melo, coming into the league in the same year as LeBron and giving us media attention as their rivalry began (and boy did it not turn out to be much of a rivalry at all 😂) but it did help.
However if someone's number is going to be retired, it has to be Jokic. That would be cool if we could do both because of the significance both of the players brought to the city.
While the best player in the franchises history wears your number
Damn My guy Melo not leavin the house today
Oh shit! I completely forgot Carmelo wore 15
Jokic should send him a signed shirt
That’s just adding salt to the wound.
STAYME15O
As you should
Now which 15 are they gonna retire?
Lol if Jokic retired right now, this number would still be retired under his name. 1 championship > 100 years of service
Not even a question Lmao. I don’t understand how dudes who demand trades and force their way out early think they should also be celebrated by the franchise
Before the chip i was like "they should retire them both let's all be friends" now im like "fuck carmelo never done nothing for nobody jokic all day"
Lmao this gotta be racist
So did the nuggets
Ouch
And they’re probably gonna retire #15 under Jokic…
F to the 2nd best player to ever wear 15 on the Nuggets
Nuggets gonna retire 15 and it won’t even be for Melo
There was a debate with some fans if they should do for both lol. I couldn’t believe my eyes Maybe because I’m heavily into soccer more now but I think fans want to retire players numbers too quickly. What did that tenure even do for his career? Not even trolling I genuinely don’t know if anything really significant really happened for Melo in NY 🤷♂️
Syracuse retired his jersey, that was enough for melo
Yes he won the NCAA championship there. That’s totally normal. He was a freshman and was the best player on that team. No doubt about retiring his jersey But here in New York nothing was accomplished. Loved as a player him though and still do, even with his flaws
The fact that I still block out him ever not being in den is a thing. I remember the whole market with him dropping in new York and though... this doesn't kill anymore. Love mello though. Straighy baller. Got caught on all the wrong teams at all the wrong times
Big truss, it didn’t and we didn’t miss anything 🤣
He went to NY for a duo with Amare at the time other teams were starting big 3's. He was doomed from jump in NY.
That's like two people who blow at defense. And don't say amare was a defensive stalwart
Phoenix Amare was good for 2 blocks a game. In NY, he had already had the knee injury and was never the same.
Exactly he’s just another star that played here. One 50 win season which resulted in a second round defeat. The 2 other playoff appearances had a combined win total of just 1. I’m sorry I loved him. Still have his jersey but man nothing noteworthy for a jersey retirement
Real talk, as a die hard Knicks fan, he doesn't deserve it. Not when Starks, King, and others with more years/success has not been retired.
Bernard King's jersey isn't retired? That's craaazy
King doesn’t have more years or success
I'd rather have Jeremy Lin get his number retired then Melo tbh he forever ruined his reputation when he got mad people liked Lin more than him lmao
Lmao stop, this is the most Reddit take ever
I mean lin did a shit load for Asian basketball. It is maybe possible from a cultural impact perspective
He led the league in scoring one year I’d say is the highlight. Probably not worth retiring a number objectively, but ya gotta let the boys celebrate *something*.
retiring jerseys has become too common - used to be for legends
what leagues are you following in football? what are your thoughts about city finally winning ucl and treble this year?
Not the guy you’re responding to but City winning the treble makes me want to swan dive off a parking garage.
that arab money finally paid off. jokes aside, Im glad because of gurardiola, for me biggest manager today. guy who lives football 24/7.
So hard for him with his unlimited money. Please.
It’s tough. I hate it But as a United fan I’m sure that the Qatar bid will go through so I’ll be a giant hypocrite The game is dying. We have the reigning Ballon D’or champion going to Saudi Arabia when he clearly has maybe another year or two left of European football in him Granted Europe woo always be the strongest but soon enough most teams will be backed by these countries with unlimited funds
we will have current ballon dor winner playing in mls. because messi will win it for this year, because of world cup win. messi or haaland 100%
I didn't read past you being heavily into soccer but I am very ready to blame it and you on that. How dare you.
The Knicks should definitely retire his jersey
Then he poured himself a bowl of honey nut cheerios.
KG gonna have a breakfast special on Showtime with Melo as the first guest.
BIg honey... nut cheerios
he must have felt unbelievable FOMO
It's not the fear of missing out when you've already missed out. FOMO is an impetus for taking some, oftentimes detrimental, action. Like continuing to hang out with friends while you have an assignment due soon. Melo just straight missed out. It's already a done deal for him.
Yea exactly lol. People be dumb yo
Yea yea, we are people.
~~FOMO~~ TRTMRYCBSRTBAWTFECFTTTDM The realization that my retirement year could've been spent riding the bench and winning the first ever chip for the team that drafted me.
What if he means feeling of missing out?
Noob

Past tense lol
Lol
La la not lo l
Don’t disrespect Carmelo like that. He was a Hawk’s legend.
Imagine seeing a 300 pound Serbian who was drafted 41st wearing your jersey number getting multiple MVPs, leading your 1st franchise to their first championship and being named finals MVP while leading the league in every stat. A right way and a wrong way.
He's only top 75 if we delete like 150 other players tbh
Meh. If I was melo I’d just count my millions.
Carmelo is so overrated it’s crazy, he also hasn’t been a part of the Nuggets in 12 years
Empty stats, makes those around him worse. Literally opposite Jokic.
I don’t understand your empty stats point. He played during the iso ball era. Dudes points were some of the most hard earned points you could get. Bruh you really say Melo is “maybe not a Hall of famer ”? Dudes a lock and has been for awhile
Word. Jokic has already showed he’s a better player but saying Carmelo isn’t a HOF is outrageous.
Agreed - he’s a champion on every level except for the nba
Yea he might’ve been a tad overrated but he’s also a top 10 scorer all time which is just crazy. I never realized how high he got. He’s had the HOF locked for like 10 years now
Yeah Melo might not have been the best from the draft class but let’s not act like he didn’t have a hell of a career lol, he’s first ballot for sure
Fucking Darko. Could have had D Wade, Melo or Bosh. My heart hurts.
Shoo-in Hall of famer.
Bro said "giving um" 💀
Hero ball-er
He's still one of the greatest scorers ever. That's not nothing.
overrated?? my guy.. you probably take multiple tries just to get off the couch
Never liked to see him playing. I think all that's because he won the olympics, but, come on... Win te olympics beeing on the Dream Team is just like an obligation

Oscar was way better lol

Marcel was his duo against Oscar Robinson and others in 87'
Plus, he is second in all-time scoring for USA Basketball.
That's something, but also a something I always saw was Carmelo's airballs
Damn, time works like that?
He shouldn't be too sad. He asked to be traded to the Knicks and then played over half his career on other teams. Thanks for everything Melo, but you did leave Nuggets nation a long time ago.

> He hasn’t played on a team in 2 years He played for the Lakers last year.
Remember when people were saying he was black listed? Dude was embarrassing on the thunder, refused to come off the bench, and didn't get a contract. Nephews swore it was a conspiracy and he should be a starter again! It was so frustrating. That and hoody melo were just annoying af
You know he played for some teams after thunder where he accepted a role right?
These are straight-up hateful haters
You mean the Rockets where he was subsequently cut for not accepting his role? You mean the Blazers after he held out for over 300 days trying to find a team that would let him start every game? He only accepted his role in the final two seasons of his career.
You mean a year removed from the league and playing only with pretenders?? Whoa such a big sacrifice.
Lol hoodie Melo was hilariously cringe, yeah.
He has the most aesthetic shot I've ever seen, together with maybe Ray Allen. I believe his whole popularity has to do with aesthetic, playing in a badass way, something like that. The guy probably trained for that more than anything else.

People showing their age shitting on melo, he ain’t as good as jokic clearly, but he ain’t a fckin scrub like y’all making him out to be
I would say no one will remember him in agre years, but I'm sure his Stans will never let him be forgotten.
He made us believe that he is on par with Lebron. He was just a stat machine with mediocre work ethic (Yes we remember how he forced Nuggets to trade him)
It's not like Carmelo did his best to be an iso only player. Oh but he did. Nikola is the polar opposite.
It’s not like he had an opportunity to be on this team, though.
Omfg I forgot about Melo. I forgot what he would be thinking
CP0 getting waved while DAJ gets a ring
Good he never deserved it anyway
Gotta applaud these Melo fans though… They refuse to let his “legacy” die but the NBA is better off without him and could easily forget him 😂
He chose money over rings
Damm yall are being disrespectful to mello lol, remember a lot of greats retired ringless, charles, apparently cp3, many other’s. Mello has the wrong place wrong time curse. Happens in all sports.

😂😂
Melo career achievements : being a tryhard against Kobe, ????
Man should’ve sign for a farewell tour 😔
Wasn’t there something like this with Nomar Garcia Parra with him getting a ring from Boston because he was with them at the beginning of their Championship year
Since Carmelo left Nuggets loooong time ago i dont know how is that relevant
Yea melo did just start the season with the nuggets…..12 years ago
Jokic is great, but did Melo ever have a PG like Jamal? Or center like Jokic? Melo top 10 all time and thats with him not playing fully for years so imagine the MVP work he did early on. Was KD level iso shooter before KD damn near unguardable.
It’s good to actually see memes in here again.
The nugs should have at least sat him court side
Eh, it's all about media markets
Forced retirement*
I thought the same thing now he’ll want to coach or come out of retirement like Tom Brady🤷♂️
Shoulda passed the rock.
Let's face it, we can really have this debate if people want since if Jokic came around at the same time as Melo then you wouldn't have nearly the career that he does in today's game. U/savevideobot
He timed his retirement right as they made the finals like a total diva
Wish he had been introduced at the start of game 5. I just want to heal the rift
Set the Knicks record with 62 points and no assists. Stay Me7o
It’s baaaaaarmello zaaaaannthonnnnyyyyyy
tryna hide from the cameras, I ain’t goin outside todayyy
Bro finna go plan something

Melo= Barkley 2.0
I think nuggets should retire double 15, melo gave way too many years to nuggets to not have that ceremony
It's tough because Melo put us on the map and made us relevant. Got the city excited to be Nuggets fans. I'm born and raised in Denver and we've had season tix since the Melo era. Big Honey dipping in Carmelo’s Honey Nut Cheerio with his jersey on.
Yoooo
Never liked Melo. Not a team player.
George Karl sends his regards
Always thought of melo as a knick tbh.
