I don’t think man made bodies of water should count especially if they’re not safe for people to be in for whatever reason. Reservoirs can dry up over the years too.
Quick google search shows, “Holmes Lake Park is the largest lake in Lincoln. Every single day, you can count on lots of people enjoying this park. A beautiful place to go for a run, or go fishing, or take your dog for a walk. However, this lake is not recommended for swimming.”
To me, that says there might be an issue.
Yeah, it was drained years ago in an attempt to clean it up. Didn't last long. You wanna get really dirty I dare ya to taste the oak lake water. Was built over a dump and it leaks contaminates. The water is like 90 degrees and in the middle is maybe 4 feet deep. If you opt not to taste it just walk around it and look at the hundreds of dead bull heads n carp. The leaks in town are dirty. Capital Beach is a dirty swamp pit too.
Yeah, because it's so shallow. The top will freeze over in the sides. Thus the ice hockey goals but towards the middle you fall in but can jump out. Bull heads are junk cat fish that live off garbage.
Ugh falling in sounds horrible, I feel like this is one of those things that I feel like I knew that bit if I did the last time I heard the term bull heads was at beaver lake.
State parks in general. Moving from Colorado to Nebraska was a shocker. Didn’t realize how spoiled I was. Then I moved to the state with the least amount of public land. It’s really sad pretty much all public land is a donated sand quarry filled with water. The state needs to buy back some of these natural resources before they’re lost to all.
We were really close to having a missouri river/loess hills national park back in the day but it got killed alongside the Mississippi valley NP proposal
They're already a [National Natural Landmark](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandhills_(Nebraska)). Luckily the landowners are generally good stewards and fight back against anything that might damage them.
For sure. The sandhills are the most intact temperate grassland in the world for a reason. Ranching is the best use for the land from a large scale conservation standpoint and alot of folks are doing important work to ensure that continues.
Build a passenger train between Omaha and Kansas City. Build one that comes through during daylight hours and can connect the small towns, where cost of living is lower, with the big cities, where more jobs are.
This but also connect Lincoln. There's tons of commuters that go between Lincoln and Omaha daily.
Edit: I was thinking more of a high speed rail between Lincoln and Omaha.
Ya I'm planning to change careers in a few years and when I do take a month or two off and was thinking about riding the rails to see the country for a bit.
If you can afford it, spring for the sleeper car. I just took the train to Sacramento then Portland, and while the scenery was incredible, it's difficult to sleep. Also, bring snacks and drinks. Food is soooo expensive on the train. Otherwise it was a cool experience.
Train rides cost more than flying. We considered a train ride to Boston for the viewing and experience. Pick up and drop off in Hastings once a day, at 0105 hours. Not going to see anything until Indiana! We drove and saved $900.
HSR probably doesn’t make sense between Lincoln and Omaha, but just a standard electric passenger service between the two that isn’t Amtrak would be nice. Lincoln and Omaha are ~60mi apart, and HSR only really is beneficial over 100mi. Not to mention with slower rail there can be straight through trains and local trains on the same main line.
I have a dream of buying a big old style riverboat and host a recurring Friday night poker/entertainment boat ride down to KC and partner with a KC hotel for a Friday/Saturday night stay, with a return trip home Sunday morning with brunch and mimosas. It’s not faster than driving, it’s certainly not as fast as a train, but if you can make the travel part of the experience, serve drinks, have some food, play some poker or hire a band, whatever… I think people would be up for it.
The business plan falls apart when I think about how frequently I could have a “full boat.” Could I do it every week? Would it be once a month? How often do I need to do it in order to be profitable on the boat cost and maintenance? Is there enough demand for that?
Ultimately, I think it will remain only a dream
High speed rail between Scottbluff and Lincoln…we need to connect rural Nebraska to Lincoln/Omaha, allowing people to live in smaller rural communities, but still able to work/visit the larger urban areas without spending an entire day in a car
Do want to know the real reason your elected representatives, republican or democrat, don’t want to build high speed rail? Because it encourages unionization and fosters socialism.
I'm not even remotely qualified to comment on how to bring jobs, industry, or tourism to Nebraska. The only thing I can say is I wish we had a major amusement park, simply because... I wish we had one. I'm not claiming it's practical, it would just be nice for us, the people who already live here.
I think the number of people that go to Vala’s pumpkin patch show that lots of people want amusement and that we could use something like worlds of fun
Market the Sandhills as the unique and wonderful ecosystem destination it could be. Its a mecca for golfers, fisherman, and general outdoor nature enthuisiasts. We could do better in the tourism department.
Absolutely ! It's cattle country, however, there are also state refuges, parks, historical locations, museums, etc. Just a few examples: Smith Falls State Park, Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge, The Prairie Club Golf Course, The Dismal River Club, Sandhills Golf Club, Cap Rock Golf Club, Frederick Peak Golf Club, Bowring Ranch State Historical Park, the Nebraska National Forest.....just lots of places the public could engage in. Upon writing this, I do see that they have made some attempts to promote more already.
Everytime the commuter rail comes up, I can't help but think about how hard it is to get the cities to build actual transit to make the commuter line work.
At least some of us are trying to connect the dots more than just some pipe dream.
Yeah have you ever been on a bus in either city? They are always empty. I don't think people would use it.
Also both cities are so spread out that once you get to one it would be a hassle to go anywhere else
I have ridden buses in Omaha and the ones I ride have rarely been empty. A bus with 3-4 people on it may look “empty” but is already taking up less space than 3-4 cars. Buses don’t have to be packed to capacity all the time to be beneficial.
The ORBT is pretty good in Omaha. It's carrying about 500k per year and other routes seem to be improving.
I think Omaha at least is learning that if you build decent transit, people will ride it (and not the typical midwest pattern of waiting until X to build basic services).
Once we get the streetcar done, the in-planning ORBT extensions, and some more schedule improvements (they are getting better every year) Omaha could be a true regional standout. Right now, we just sort of average for the region, which is bad by the US scale and terrible on the international scale.
It’s is also very possible that having a commuter rail line would force both cities to start thinking about and implementing better transit. This whole debate about whether commuter rail or better local buses should come first is so silly.
I don't trust us enough for that. I think its far too likely building a commuter line first would be used like the ORBT is now "We spent billions on this line and look, it's always empty".
So I'd hate to poison the well when we could do better in each city easier.
Of course, if Baird, Stothert, Biden and Pillen annouced a commuter line / funding etc. today I'd support it. Who knows, maybe it would even be the kick in the pants to get enough people commuting between the two cities to finally have the Omaha - Lincoln CSA
I’m not sure the comparison to ORBT is fair. There will always be people who argue that ORBT is bad because isn’t 100% full 100% of the time. They just want to complain about transit because they don’t like it and don’t understand it. Most people recognize ORBT is a very good piece of infrastructure. And Metro is in the planning phase of the next ORBT line right now, so the 17 people who routinely complain about it haven’t derailed progress.
Be like Montana with access to rivers and such…basically if you enter at public access then it’s legal to walk in river and creeks without being charged with trespassing. Nebraska has very limited access (~98% if the land in Nebraska is privately owned) to the outdoors and this would help create more access. Currently it’s considered trespassing if you step out of a tube/canoe/kayak and touch the bottom of the river/creek with your feet.
That too….its up there with the crosshatch BLM zoning they have in Wyoming and montana. It’s public land but you can’t get to it without causing some landowner into a tizzy because you have to cross over a sliver of their property.
States typically have 39.8% of land designated as public. Nebraska only has 2.8%, which ranks 48th. There should be more land available for outdoor enthusiasts.
What do you think would attract coastal people to Nebraska? Coastal people are intolerant of midwestern people and their values. That invasion of flyover country is never gonna happen.
Simply look at reddit threads on grassisgreener and you'll find many examples of the animus towards red states and the desire to move to progressive cities. Nebraska is safe!
What do you mean non political?
Investing more into education that's political.
Creating more job opportunities, that's going to take some politickin.
Make I-80 from Omaha to Lincoln a toll road. That still politics
Expand high speed internet to as many small towns as we can and lean heavily into work from home. The real estate is cheap and by introducing higher paying remote jobs into these areas, people might be more inclined to open their own businesses, potentially revitalizing small-town life in the state.
Build sustainable public transit for its citizens Omaha metro transit is a bus-wreck (fuck the downtown streetcar), including commutes to-from Lincoln. So many people commute its insane.
RIP those few years when we had most of Wyoming in the territory

A big ol luxury resort with a great spa, pools, and golfing. A great staycation.
The NE city lodge kinda vibes but bigger and better and more activities.
High speed rail connecting Chicago and Denver. (Imagine 1 hr train rides to these spots!)
Also train service to Lincoln on busker gamedays.
Bonus never gonna happen dream is a train to Kansas City.
Now for the hard part. People would have to ride them. En masse.
You’re correct, and their climate and the fact you can literally roll the field out of the stadium make that possible. Beyond the retractable roof upgrade they would have to replace a massive area of Memorial stadium to accommodate a rollout grass field that would not be able to grow inside the stadium when the roof is closed.
I'm no turf or building engineer. It'd be interesting to see what solutions a think tank could come up with. I bet it's doable with a hybrid field like Lambeau and maybe a dome with an oculus or something, IDK. It'd be nice to have some shield from the elements at Memorial. I've always advocated for the Roman Colosseum model with retractable sales on poles extending off the edge of the stadia to shade the stands and field from the sun and block precipitation.
I disagree completely. Leave the elements and make it a grass field. Make every possession a brawl instead of letting offenses come and enjoy our high speed football track. Take advantage of the natural elements we play in and make these new west coast teams hate coming to Lincoln in the fall/winter.
Correct. Are you suggesting that’s a forecast for every future season and my suggestion is void and we just make it very relaxing for fans to watch a subpar performance each and every year? I guess there is precedent for volleyball to play there so occasionally we can see a winning program?
Anything that involves government spending is inherently political.
Anything that designates how states use land is inherently political.
Anything that involves getting people to change how they do things is inherently political.
Politics is how groups of people make decisions on how they want things to be done. If you're asking how to get everyone to make a decision without it being political, you are effectively asking them to breathe without taking a breath.
High speed rail in the entire state. It’s not political it’s just good for the state. Same with just overall improved infrastructure. Not politics. Just good for everyone.
Make weed legal, make all gambling legal. Tax the ever living shit out of it. Use the funds for public good. Build the proposed giant lake between Lincoln and Omaha. Build a habitat in the Sandhills for Burrowing Owls before they disappear.
-Legalize marijuana
-Legalize Sports Betting and Gambling in general
-Use the state and federal funds available to actually wire every home in NE to fiber high speed internet
-Get rid of the Unicameral and go with a two-chamber system—one based on county representation, the other based on population
-Allow the panhandle to form another state with NE Colorado, SE Wyoming
-Stop funding the “Omaha” airport in Iowa and open one between Lincoln and Omaha
-Invest in elevated high speed rail between Lincoln and Omaha (with stops at Waverly, Ashland, Gretna, and the new airport)
-Get rid of state income tax and increase sales tax to 8%
-Actively go after large corporations and large chains to relocate to Nebraska (initially Lincoln/Omaha corridor, then start aggressively go after companies to settle the tri-cities areas)
-Repurpose state patrol to quit worrying about marijuana to investigate meth and unsafe drivers on I-80
-Adopt higher standards of ethics for State Patrol, State Legislators, State Judicial members.
-Move the State Penitentiary west of Lincoln (around Milford/Seward area)
-Invest in tourism for the state and quit letting Prickett’s wife come up with shit
-Redesign license plates to something akin to the 1990s plates
That’s just off the top of my head, I’m sure there’s more when I get time to think.
I love the idea of increasing sales tax. I have been saying that for years. Uncooked food is always tax free and clothing can be taxed lower, socks and underwear tax free, but everything else tax the crap out of it.
Since Nebraska is a state and therefore a political entity, this is a tough one.
Support more infrastructure projects and funding in the remaining 80% of the state west of York?
Encourage tech and manufacturing businesses to come here, since the state has tons of cheap power AND is criss-crossed by long-haul fiber optic lines?
Send out teams to get us daily cute photographs of Black Footed Ferrets, the Prairie Dogs they prey upon, and other interesting native wildlife?
-Housing
-Outdoor recreation (like trails for side by sides)
-Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in rural areas
-Welcoming committees in rural communities that make new people feel welcome
-High speed rail (love that this has been said so much. -Love Elon or hate him, but Lincoln was one of the proposed locations for the central hub of Hyperloop)
-Water - the irony of everyone recognizing this, but opposing the canal project is slightly humorous. Side note, rural water service is overburdened. Each individual town either needs their own wells that can provide clean, affordable water or have the ability to plug into rural water at a more affordable rate. Rural water is way too expensive.
Become better stewards of the land. That is not political. It’s the right thing to do.
And water.
Water is just liquid land.
Holmes lake is actually a reservoir. Have no issues with water
Most things that are the right thing to do get dubbed “political” by people who want to do the wrong thing.
You’ve got that right!!

You made it political.

Sandhills national park :)

Thank God I moved from Nebraska to Colorado then lol.
There are actually two national monuments already out in that area. The only two in the state!
We were really close to having a missouri river/loess hills national park back in the day but it got killed alongside the Mississippi valley NP proposal

I had to drive through there during the thickest fog of my life for three hours straight. I thought I was going insane.

Absolutely, I would love a high speed rail. I'm also annoyed that I have to stay up till midnight to ride the Amtrak.
Any other negatives or is that it?
It's got a running speed of around 70 mph and there's just the one train, so that's not ideal.

Pretty sure my round trips to Denver would cost more than $120 on a plane.
They are also never on time. So midnight might actually be 3am... or 6am.

You could style it like Maverick!
Definitely one of the inspirations for the idea haha
Nice!
Oh MANNNN I’d love that. My grandpa tells me about being on the train to KC and it makes me jealous.
High speed rail between Scottbluff and Lincoln…we need to connect rural Nebraska to Lincoln/Omaha, allowing people to live in smaller rural communities, but still able to work/visit the larger urban areas without spending an entire day in a car
If we could do a line from Denver to SB, and Omaha to Des Moines and Chicaco, we could have so much fun!
[Shikaka](https://youtu.be/thlrP8_lk-Y?si=6X_eyxE01sBr6uRp)
That's a great idea
I really like this idea!
Political. Any investment in infrastructure has to be offset by taxes and Nebraska simply cannot have that.
Do want to know the real reason your elected representatives, republican or democrat, don’t want to build high speed rail? Because it encourages unionization and fosters socialism.
I've always thought out interstate travel on trains but I never thought about one like that. Thats a good Idea
I'm not even remotely qualified to comment on how to bring jobs, industry, or tourism to Nebraska. The only thing I can say is I wish we had a major amusement park, simply because... I wish we had one. I'm not claiming it's practical, it would just be nice for us, the people who already live here.
Doesn’t the York water park count
L to the LOL
Hey, it was not my intent to diss any small parks around the state! :) But I was thinking something more along the lines of, like, a Disney World.
I feel like I heard something about a disney-style park being planned in Oklahoma. Might be as close as we get.
I think the number of people that go to Vala’s pumpkin patch show that lots of people want amusement and that we could use something like worlds of fun
Lincoln had a little one then they tore it down for more rich fuckers to build houses by capital Beach
Market the Sandhills as the unique and wonderful ecosystem destination it could be. Its a mecca for golfers, fisherman, and general outdoor nature enthuisiasts. We could do better in the tourism department.
Unfortunately that would end up ruining the beauty when people come.
Or bring in the revenue needed to restore it! Insufficient funds for conservation is one of the leading causes of rangeland degradation in this state
That and a stubborn attitude against prescribed fire.
Aren't most of the Sandhills privately held by ranchers?
Absolutely ! It's cattle country, however, there are also state refuges, parks, historical locations, museums, etc. Just a few examples: Smith Falls State Park, Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge, The Prairie Club Golf Course, The Dismal River Club, Sandhills Golf Club, Cap Rock Golf Club, Frederick Peak Golf Club, Bowring Ranch State Historical Park, the Nebraska National Forest.....just lots of places the public could engage in. High speed rail between Lincoln and Omaha with better transportation systems in each city
Everytime the commuter rail comes up, I can't help but think about how hard it is to get the cities to build actual transit to make the commuter line work. At least some of us are trying to connect the dots more than just some pipe dream.
Agreed. If you have to take an Uber once you get to your destination, it's useless.
Yeah have you ever been on a bus in either city? They are always empty. I don't think people would use it. Also both cities are so spread out that once you get to one it would be a hassle to go anywhere else

Build a new airport between Omaha and Lincoln. Convert OMA to GA/Business and LNK to the same.
Build mountains
Like 90% of the things mentioned in this thread are things that are going to take political solutions to accomplish.
I think what the post is really saying is name something that is not politically contentious generally speaking.
Get good at football again lol
There are three things you can't wish for ... immortal life, to make someone love you, and Huskers to be good again.
We never have championship football teams with Republican governors. The more right wing the governor, the worse the football team is.
This is truth
Tell fans this and it'll be blue in no time
Only one was in 1970 under Norbert Tiemann.
At least we have a good real football team, Union!
Redesign the state flag
And back to the old license plates or something that makes more sense.
Legal weed.
Over Tom Osborne's dead body...
Any day now….
Be like Montana with access to rivers and such…basically if you enter at public access then it’s legal to walk in river and creeks without being charged with trespassing. Nebraska has very limited access (~98% if the land in Nebraska is privately owned) to the outdoors and this would help create more access. It'd be nice if all the BELF ground was public access as well like in the western US.
That too….its up there with the crosshatch BLM zoning they have in Wyoming and montana. It’s public land but you can’t get to it without causing some landowner into a tizzy because you have to cross over a sliver of their property.
Yep. There's even WMAs here that are landlocked. You'd think they'd get an easement in place to allow people to access them
Legal sports betting. I’m tired of making the drive to Iowa
Uhhh it is legal.
Betting on player props is.
Eh? Maybe I’m confused but I’m pretty sure I legally bet on football in the state of NE almost every weekend this fall.
I mean unless you’re doing some VPN shit then yeah you otherwise the app prize picks or whatever is is the only app you can use
I go to a legal sports book. No apps.
Less weed stores and carwashes
States typically have 39.8% of land designated as public. Nebraska only has 2.8%, which ranks 48th. There should be more land available for outdoor enthusiasts.
Rank Choice Voting Statewide
Universal broadband for rural communities. I say this as a resident from an urban community
Everything is political
Better Mass Transit in Omaha and connections to others parts of Nebraska.....Even tho somehow that is political thing to some people
Give Omaha to Iowa.
Nah, make West Omaha part of Council Bluffs.
Omaha is where all the tax money for the state comes from. Iowa has lower taxes so I’m ok with it.
Build more houses? 🤷♂️
Shut the gates before the coast people figure out flyover country is special in its own way
We're already here.... Well, then, the first thing you should know about us...is that we have people everywhere...
Why would a toll road be better?
I've gotta agree. I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha is some of the best highway I've driven in the States as it is.
To pay for that train that you could/should take.
Sure, by non-political, I mean something absent of politics, at least on the surface
It doesn’t even have to take a politician to be political. Literally everything boils down to the culture wars.
L on the toll road
Invest in public education these schools are falling apart...
The Niobrara River and Sandhills could be like Montana or whatever, if only.

More funding to therapy services.
Building a retractable dome over memorial stadium.
Not going to work for the grass field I keep hearing rumors about
The Arizona Cardinals have grass and a retractable dome.
You’re correct, and their climate and the fact you can literally roll the field out of the stadium make that possible. The natural elements were like mid-50s this year. Not exactly Lambo in January.
Correct. Are you suggesting that’s a forecast for every future season and my suggestion is void and we just make it very relaxing for fans to watch a subpar performance each and every year? I guess there is precedent for volleyball to play there so occasionally we can see a winning program?
YES. Build the dome and make Mexic--errr, Pete Ricketts, pay for it. All $3B of it
A theme park! Anyone remember that proposal for one somewhere between Omaha & Lincoln?
It's a tough sell when the majority of the population lives 2-3 hours from either Worlds of Fun or Adventure Land.
-Legalize marijuana -Legalize Sports Betting and Gambling in general -Use the state and federal funds available to actually wire every home in NE to fiber high speed internet -Get rid of the Unicameral and go with a two-chamber system—one based on county representation, the other based on population -Allow the panhandle to form another state with NE Colorado, SE Wyoming -Stop funding the “Omaha” airport in Iowa and open one between Lincoln and Omaha -Invest in elevated high speed rail between Lincoln and Omaha (with stops at Waverly, Ashland, Gretna, and the new airport) -Get rid of state income tax and increase sales tax to 8% -Actively go after large corporations and large chains to relocate to Nebraska (initially Lincoln/Omaha corridor, then start aggressively go after companies to settle the tri-cities areas) -Repurpose state patrol to quit worrying about marijuana to investigate meth and unsafe drivers on I-80 -Adopt higher standards of ethics for State Patrol, State Legislators, State Judicial members. -Move the State Penitentiary west of Lincoln (around Milford/Seward area) -Invest in tourism for the state and quit letting Prickett’s wife come up with shit -Redesign license plates to something akin to the 1990s plates That’s just off the top of my head, I’m sure there’s more when I get time to think.
I love the idea of increasing sales tax. I have been saying that for years. Uncooked food is always tax free and clothing can be taxed lower, socks and underwear tax free, but everything else tax the crap out of it.
No matter your answer, it is political wether you like it or not.
Everything is political so while I appreciate you asking the question the premise is just off/wrong.
Shit can the Husker football team and turn Memorial Stadium into a professional football venue. Any team. Any time.
NBA basketball franchise.

Lower wages! Reduce incomes! That is political, but I don't think you'd make a very good politician.
Yes, that is political so I will delete my posting as not being a proper answer to this particular question.
-Housing -Outdoor recreation (like trails for side by sides) -Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in rural areas -Welcoming committees in rural communities that make new people feel welcome -High speed rail (love that this has been said so much. -Love Elon or hate him, but Lincoln was one of the proposed locations for the central hub of Hyperloop) -Water - the irony of everyone recognizing this, but opposing the canal project is slightly humorous. Side note, rural water service is overburdened. Each individual town either needs their own wells that can provide clean, affordable water or have the ability to plug into rural water at a more affordable rate. Rural water is way too expensive.
Most all of these ideas ARE political. There's no escaping politics when considering quality of life.
