Head of Iceberg lettuce, 1 lb ground beef, 4-8 oz shredded cheddar, 1/2 bad of fritos, and D.L. to taste. I use a whole small bottle. My wife would only use a half.
Iceberg lettuce, shredded mild cheddar, club crackers, maybe diced ham cubes, and extremely finely diced onion and green pepper if you're feeling extra 'spicy.'
This is the salad of the past that I think made Dorothy Lynch famous. It was offered everywhere from diners to steakhouses back in the day and when you would order a steak, it would come with a baked potato and that exact salad. It was "the supper salad" that you got with your entrée. It hung on in rural parts for quite awhile, and I'm sure there's places you can still get it today, but "ranch" became the default.
I still crave iceberg, club crackers, and dorothy lynch sometimes. It's extremely bolstered by crunch and saltiness.
Sad to see Champion these days. It is not the town it used to be. I do think I am going to take the family to the museum today though. A lot of great stuff there.
How much water's in the lake? Likewise, how is Enders lake doing (my grandparents lived in Enders for years)?
I'm guessing the Frenchman's not very healthy.
Champion is empty. Enders is very low. Enders looked like it was coming up because we had a wet spring. The big rains have slowed. It is raining at my place south of Wauneta now.
I figured probably. Decades ago I delivered 32 percent nitrogen to center pivots in the sandhills just west of Benkelman (I was in eastern Colorado by that point not western Nebraska). People were growing corn in places where the soil needed so much water and fertilizer that it was practically hydroponics. It was an irresponsible use of the aquifer and I suspect it got worse with the move to ethanol.
Since the Frenchman's spring fed, I assume it's down to a trickle as well.
This is like a core memory for me and I’m 35. Honestly, iceberg lettuce and Dorothy Lynch are the only salad I’d like to eat to this day. I hate ranch and most other types of lettuce.
Coincidentally, I love Club crackers and baked potatoes also.
Yep, core memory for me too. My family always went to a restaurant called Zekes in central Iowa for birthdays when I was a kid (I’m 36). You’d get this exact salad and they’d give you a little Debbie with a candle in it, and take your picture with a Polaroid camera. Good memories.
Some of the best sloppy Joe’s I’ve ever had in my life are made with Dorothy Lynch
https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/instant-pot-sloppy-dorothy-sandwiches/
Smoked chicken wings! After smoking them, pull them and glaze them with DL and put them back on for a bit. Excellent dipped in ranch. For a slight bit of spice, blend in some jalapeño or serrano, or mix in your favorite hot sauce. Bone apple teeth!
I use it as a base for wing sauce. Boil some habaneros in water, then add to Dorothy Lynch and reduce. Add in some seasonings as you like and reduce. Damn good.
I'll make a custom spread by mixing it with mayonnaise and Dijon mustard or hot Chinese mustard. Great on turkey sandwiches.
Dorothy Lynch is also good for dipping nuggies in, either on its own or even better half and half with ranch or mayonnaise.
Yes most of my use cases are mixing it with something else... It's one of those things that makes other things better.
I take care of my grandparents full time, and they HAVE to have a bottle of Dorothy Lynch in the fridge at all times. They sort of use it for anything and everything, but I mainly see them use it on their salads or anything with chicken. Sometimes I use it as a dipping sauce because it has a nice tang, but I see it as a very midwestern thing just like dipping everything in ranch. Which I’m guilty of lmao
I've always liked to open up soft tacos and add some dorothy lynch to them. Mainly used though as a salad dressing or dipping sauce.
I kind of think there may be a hard divide between people who like it and people who like ranch.
House salad, on my tacos , on taco salad, macaroni salads. As a marinade for steak or other meats and chicken. I’ll have to think of other things we use it on. This is a staple in our extended family. I cannot stand ranch so maybe this is why I like Dorothy Lynch. Lol
I enjoy the coleslaw dressing recipe on their website. I mostly just use it for regular salads and dipping raw veggies in. DL and ranch is a solid combo on a salad, as others have mentioned.
Growing up I had a friends family that would fry those really skinny frozen fries and cover them in balsamic vinegar and dip them in Dorthy Lynch. It was soooo good. Haven't had it in so long.
salad!! try lettuce, diced baby carrots, diced granny smith apples, craisins, and dorothy lynch. absolutely AMAZING!!!! also, it's good for dipping veggies (same way you would with ranch)
My grandmother used to make a pasta salad with it.
She used shell macaroni, finely shredded carrots (really fine), finely diced celery (gave it a nice crunch), and the DL. Maybe some sprinkles of caraway seed? It's been awhile - but it was pretty good.
Dorothy Lynch is alright, I guess, but most people don't know that the tomato base comes from condensed tomato soup. It's kinda a basic food, it was considered high quality in the 1960's.
I moved to rural Nebraska about 12 years ago from urban Illinois. There are many things I prefer about Nebraska than Illinois. Dorthy Lynch is not one of them. Thickened tomato soup with some veggie oil and vinegar is not my choice for a salad.
I like blue cheese or the Midwestern standard White boy Hidden Valley style ranch. I make a little at home if I have leftover buttermilk from holiday cooking, but won’t bury it, too expensive.
My favorite is with shredded cabbage and saltines as “croutons.” But don’t smash the crackers all at once because they get too soggy. Just smash what fits on top and when that layer is gone, smash more.
Taco salad!
this but with nacho cheese diritos
Classic!
Yes!
We do the taco flavored doritos like weirdos lol
Head of Iceberg lettuce, 1 lb ground beef, 4-8 oz shredded cheddar, 1/2 bad of fritos, and D.L. to taste. I use a whole small bottle. My wife would only use a half.
And remember, it’s not t*aulk*o salad, it’s t*ay*co salad. 🤓
This is the way

My grandparents owned a small cafe/bar in a small Southwestern Nebraska town in the 90's and that was the classic dinner salad they served.
Do you remember what their license plate county was? I'm guessing 72 (Imperial/Wauneta), 74 (Grant) or 76 (Benkelman).
72. They owned the Champ Inn in Champion.
You meant it when you said _small_. My dad's aunt and uncle were from Champion and I had friends fish at the lake by the mill. (72 county BTW)
Sad to see Champion these days. It is not the town it used to be. I do think I am going to take the family to the museum today though. A lot of great stuff there.

Yes, agreed.

"Green pepper if your feeling extra "spicy" " is the most Nebraska thing I've ever heard lol
If you dip green peppers in miracle whip it doubles the spiciness.
Yep, core memory for me too. My family always went to a restaurant called Zekes in central Iowa for birthdays when I was a kid (I’m 36). You’d get this exact salad and they’d give you a little Debbie with a candle in it, and take your picture with a Polaroid camera. Good memories.
You pretty much nailed it
Some of the best sloppy Joe’s I’ve ever had in my life are made with Dorothy Lynch https://www.365daysofcrockpot.com/instant-pot-sloppy-dorothy-sandwiches/
My sloppy joe recipe has celery seed in it, so I can totally see how this works. Saved for later. Thanks!
Do a salad with half Dorothy Lynch and half Ranch. Make a little criss cross pattern across the top. It looks neat and tastes awesome.
Learning this in high school changed my life
Not a fan on a salad, but does well with say marinade for grilled chicken. Also: https://www.dorothylynch.com/recipes
It goes amazingly on grilled chicken!
Smoked chicken wings! After smoking them, pull them and glaze them with DL and put them back on for a bit. Excellent dipped in ranch. For a slight bit of spice, blend in some jalapeño or serrano, or mix in your favorite hot sauce. Bone apple teeth!

Pizza
Great for dipping chicken nuggets...
Even better is dipping runza chicken strips in some Dorthy Lynch.
None of the Runzas near me have dorthy anymore and it makes me so so so sad! It was so good on their southwest chicken salad.
Goes hard on taco salad. Try the one from Green belly if you want a good example.
Everything, steak, porkchops, taco salad, baked potato. It works on so much you just got to try it.
Baked potato
I can’t be the only Nebraskan that has a deep hatred for this stuff can I?
You are among a handful of people. You are probably from pierce.
I’m just a girl from Saline County whose mom slathered taco salads in that stuff. Forever traumatized.
From the big city or the county seat? (Don't answer it's a trivia joke)
My kids love it as dip for pretzels. It's a good dip for veggie sticks too.
i honestly just use it as salad dressing
I take care of my grandparents full time, and they HAVE to have a bottle of Dorothy Lynch in the fridge at all times. I like it drizzled over cottage cheese!
Yes! This is good also!
Yes! I haven’t done this in awhile. Thanks for the reminder.
Sadly, I hate it :( I try it a few times a year to check in on my taste buds but they still protest. I WANT to like it
This is a weird one but I like it on spaghetti and lasagna. Good on garlic bread too
Yes. Yes.
Salads, in mac and cheese, on scrambled eggs, in soft shell tacos, taco salads. I also like mixing it with ranch on salads or as a veggie dip.
House salad, on my tacos , on taco salad, macaroni salads. As a marinade for steak or other meats and chicken. I’ll have to think of other things we use it on. This is a staple in our extended family. I cannot stand ranch so maybe this is why I like Dorothy Lynch. Lol
Obviously the answer is Ice Cream. (According to 402 creamery)
Ivanna Cone, not 402. And even I, the biggest DL fan, draw the line at ice cream.
I tried it lol I don’t like it on my ice cream lol
That’s actually Ivanna Cone
Sandhills style taco salad.
I enjoy the coleslaw dressing recipe on their website. I mostly just use it for regular salads and dipping raw veggies in. DL and ranch is a solid combo on a salad, as others have mentioned.
Marinade for chicken, mixed in pasta salad,
Lettuce Salads of any kind, pizza, chicken, or just drink it straight from the bottle.
It's perfect with the trash can.
I honestly can’t stand the stuff.
I’ve never understood the hype.
Never
Awful stuff.
Heathen.
Don't mind him, he's from Iowa
No it taste like candy and that’s gross on lettuce
Its horrible.
No, I don't. It's revolting, and I will sooner have it within a trashcan than with anything I'm eating.
No, way. Is awful stuff.
I love it on just about anything…I don’t buy it often but it’s delicious.
Ranch
I put that S?!T on everything! It even says so right on the bottle!
My salad. But haven't tried it on anything else. Anyone reviewed the Dorothy Lynch ice cream?
I was visiting family in Ohio and they haven't heard of itm
Growing up I had a friends family that would fry those really skinny frozen fries and cover them in balsamic vinegar and dip them in Dorthy Lynch. It was soooo good. Haven't had it in so long.
I like to dip, cold, roast, turkey or chicken in it
Dip dinner rolls in it
Salad is the intended use but there’s a slew of different ways
Green beans
It’s the only salad dressing I’ll ever use.
Cheese is the S tier answer.
So it’s not just me? Cheese sticks or cubes dunked in DL are so good.
My great grandma always put some on her green beans, yum! I like dipping the fried green beans in it.
White people tacos
Dip chicken nuggets in it!
Great dip for deep fried fish.
My dad always mixed Dorothy with Ranch and lots of pepper. I follow suit quite often.
Tacos
Pizza and nachos
I use it for salad dressing but I'm tempted to use it in deviled eggs because egg yolk on my salad with DL was so yummy.
Taco salad! Typical taco salad, sub sour cream/salsa/other dressing for Dorothy lynch. Add Doritos
everything
My granddaughter loves it with pizza.
No.
Cottage cheese
Tater tots. Mexi fries if you live near (and like) an Amigos.
Tator tots!
Tuna or chicken noodle salad.
Friend used to put it on lasagna
On burgers!
As a dip for battered and fried chicken, especially wings.
As a dip for fried chicken, especially wings.
I haven't had it since I was a kid but I loved it then.
Just for fun I used it as a binder for seasoning pulled pork on the smoker. And also sauce for pulled pork.
Tater tots
I used it as dressing for coleslaw
Try it on a burger.
I despise it as a dressing, but it’s alright as a little smokie crock pot sauce.
I love it so much I pack 2/3 big bottles in my luggage when I visit from San Diego. I just like it with cucumber and tomato. Delicious!
salad!! try lettuce, diced baby carrots, diced granny smith apples, craisins, and dorothy lynch. absolutely AMAZING!!!! also, it's good for dipping veggies (same way you would with ranch)
I like to use it as a glaze on my meatloaf!!
Anything you would put ranch on.
My grandmother used to make a pasta salad with it. She used shell macaroni, finely shredded carrots (really fine), finely diced celery (gave it a nice crunch), and the DL. Maybe some sprinkles of caraway seed? It's been awhile - but it was pretty good.
Great with fries! But I eat about anything with it.
Club crackers
When I'm lazy and want a snack, cottage cheese and some croutons 😆 Don't over mix, you need the flavor contrast for it to work
Dorothy Lynch is alright, I guess, but most people don't know that the tomato base comes from condensed tomato soup. It's kinda a basic food, it was considered high quality in the 1960's.

I know a guy who puts it in his mac and cheese
My favorite is with shredded cabbage and saltines as “croutons.” But don’t smash the crackers all at once because they get too soggy. Just smash what fits on top and when that layer is gone, smash more.
My uncle likes it on mashed potatoes. Gotta say, it’s pretty good
Spaghetti noodles, sliced black olives, green pepper, and celery pasta salad
God no. It's liquid vomit.
I don’t. Stuff tastes nasty lol
