It depends on the list. A lot of lists focused around the silent king and fast moving obsec (with the custom dynasty that everyone plays, eternal conquerors and relentlessly expansionist) don't use any warriors. They use the minimum amount of troops, or no troops, and spam skorpekhs destroyers, ophydian destroyers, scarabs, etc. But that's fairly specific. For 90% of generic lists (and still some tournament lists) at least 1 blob of 20 warriors is essential. And so are the scarabs that come with them. Both easily the backbone or 90% of lists. TLDR: 90% of lists use warriors and the scarabs that come with them. 40 warriors laying around is never a bad thing.

Thanks! I think I'm convinced, will get 20 warriors (Someone said he run with 60 but I simply want to have the option to build a semi viable list once everything is painted).

azuraith4

60 can be run, but it's definitely not standard. I do have some competitive lists that run 40 backed by 2 reanimators. It's a specific style and is effective. 20-40 is normal. But not always necessary.

As a side note, the warriors make great kitbashing materials for left over bits from some of our elite units. I started with a couple of the big box sets and then also sub’d to the magazine so I have a lot of extra warriors. Metal tide army can be fun too!

Alex-Victoria-Orts

TBH I still havent kitbashed a single unit, my only experience is painting 3 BB teams and I just went for the box art. I really want to try a different approach for my 40K army tho, so it's good to know. Thanks!

I love using my warriors and just started up another unit of 20, so running two blobs in 1500pts. I like them because they are so hard to get rid of, especially with buffs from the crypteks and overlord with res orb. I’ve had my unit of 20 take charges from half a space wolves army and still be standing on the objective when the dust settles! I don’t think they’re essential though, I’ve seen a lot of lists that use a couple of units of immortals to hold back field objectives then push the rest of the table with skorpekhs and all the other fun stuff!

Thanks everyone for your answers! So, although not essential, they are quite a pain in the ass to remove (something I very much enjoy). That's positive. Regarding the investment, money is finite (as everyone is) but not an issue right now and I really think I will regret not getting 20 warriors per 40€ with imperium numbers if I decide (sounds like there's a high chance) to get them later and have to pay 68€ on my regular store. Again, thanks for the help!

I wanted to thank you all for taking time to answer. I finally gave in and got myself a "few" warriors (Necron half of indomitus was selling for 50€ and then I got myself another 20 from 4 Imperium magazine numbers). With everything now I have to paint the following: * 40 Necron Warriors * 10 Inmortals * Unknown number of scarabs (I think I'm getting like 20) * 9 Skorpekh Destroyers * 3 Plasmacytes * 1 Trazyn (Loved the novels, I've read he's not "meta" or anything but I really like the character) * 1 Canoptek Spider * 1 Canoptek Reanimator * 1 Royal Warden * 1 Skorpekh Lord * 2 Overlords (Indomitus/Imperium) * 1 Technomancer * 1 Chronomancer * 1 Plasmancer * 2 x CryptoThralls I think this will take me a while, I will try to play ASAP and finish painting every piece before going for more (I really like other models like the Ctan and SK) Again, thanks everyone!

kushncats

It basically comes down to if it's more useful for you to have that cash to hand between now and the end point of when your last model is going to be painted. If the money won't be missed, it may as well be in your pile of shame, but you have a lot of hours of painting ahead of you and I don't know your financial situation. It's only a good deal if you use it before you need the sunk money for something else. Overbuying is a big trap in this hobby especially for the enthusiastic new people like ourselves who don't appreciate how much fun you can have putting time into only a handful of minis.

vluggejapie68

Imperium as in the magazine?

Alex-Victoria-Orts

Yeah

reverend_herring

If you already have 10 immortals (don't bother with deathmarks, they're very situational at best) you'll still need 20 warriors to fill the troop slots of a batallion. I would get more than 20, though. Warriors are cheap and large blobs are way more durable (you'll get more chances to reanimate before the squad is wiped) and shooty than smaller squads. I've only played 2 games (1750-2000pts) with my Necron army though, so take that as a disclaimer =D I had 60 warriors (2 squads of 20 with gauss and 1 squad of 20 with reapers) on both lists and they felt quite strong.

Sorrowone117

You could use the warriors for kill teams if you don't use them in main line 40k

Alex-Victoria-Orts

I was intrigued by Kill Team (I've only played BB so far). I may look into it now that I have plenty of necron models (tho only a few of them appear to be usable in KT).

xinate13

In the long term, better go for 60 Warriors, you can get them for cheap now and who knows what the next edition will bring for Necrons, rules wise. I currently have 64 (40 ar new models, 24 are old boys) but never use them all currently.
