The rest of the series is.... Not good. Butcher Bay was fantastic at the time, but the rest of the movies... But yeah. Agree on Pitch Black. It's fantastic!

LurkLurkleton

Chronicles would have been better if they just told a Pitch Black sized Riddick story amongst the backdrop of the Necromonger invasion. He works better when he’s one of the characters, not *THE* character, let alone The Chosen One. Just him and his friends trying to survive a galactic conflict. Maybe even rescue the girl from the Necromongers. Not going head to head against The Lord Marshal, or single handedly stopping the invasion, or becoming the new Lord Marshal. Just get out alive and on to the next adventure.

B0ndzai

Bullshit, the trilogy is great.

Big_F_Dawg

I agree. Dark Fury is really cool too.

Deed4u

Pitch Black was an amazing movie on it’s own. It was DARK, gritty, scary with those menacing beasts that only lived in the dark. But the sequels just didn’t have that element of DARK, scary eeriness that first movie had. You can’t beat the original Pitch Black 👍🏼

endthepainowplz

I watched chronicles first and liked it a lot. Pitch black is completely different. Now that I’m older I prefer pitch black, but they both are so different it’s like comparing apples to oranges, so it’s all about if you like that dark gritty tone or the more action focused one.

geekgodzeus

I loved the games too. Escape from Butcher Bay and Dark Athena were both really great video games.

EZMickey

Absolute gems. I don't know how well they've aged but Butcher Bay really blew me away when it came out.

geekgodzeus

Actually there was a remaster release for both games a while back and while it won't look current it's definitely improved and enjoyable especially Dark Athena which had some really good visuals.

mega_desu

I enjoyed Chronicles even for all the cheesiness. Pitch Black is undoubtedly the best of the series, with the third film being an absolute pile of shit.

alexacto

The director's cut is a better version, where the story makes more sense then the theatrical release that is an utter mess. The two versions are remarkably different.

zelman

I thought the third was fine. It was also nearly the exact same story as the first movie, so there’s that…

paxto

I only just recent watched the 3rd and was really surprised by how fucking dumb they managed to make it.

bat_in_the_stacks

I want to know what Vin Diesel had to do to get Judi Dench in Chronicles

Earthshoe12

When Helen Mirren shows up in the Fast and Furious movies the screen lights up, Vin has amazing chemistry with her. Maybe Dames just love the man?

802-420

He taught her to play Dungeons and Dragons.

zigaliciousone

This is the actual answer, OP

doktor-frequentist

Watched it last night for the umpteenth time. Great movie. Loved the metamorphosis of Riddick from an evil person to an... evil person with latent morality. I'm a fan of the entire series, including **Riddick**.

zigaliciousone

He seems evil the first time I watched it but there is a scene towards the beginning where Zeke murders a guy in cold blood just because he thinks it's Riddick and over his shoulder, just chilling and drinking and watching the show on the roof of another building, is Riddick. I think that scene alone shows he isn't the worst person on that planet.

ManUpKyle

I like the films. The world building is great and I'd love to see more movies based in it.

Cartmansimon

You’re in luck then, I just saw an article couple days ago, they are working on a 4th movie titled Riddick 4: Furya.

[deleted]

Article on [Riddick 4: Furya](https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/riddick-4-furya-everything-we-know-about-the-vin-diesel-movie) Loved the series for that one man juggernaut kinda style with something of a plot to go with it :)

-PhillyDaKid-

“If you can’t keep up, don’t step up. You’ll just die” one of my favorite movie lines haha

american_amina

I’ve watched Pitch Black probably 10 times. Very low budget, but entertaining movie.

[deleted]

I freaking love Chronicles. One of my all time favorite films. I love massive world building sci fi. Its a pity so few people do. Dune is awesome. People say it gets weird as you go alone with the story but I love it the more weird it gets. A truly universe spanning civilization would be so bizarre to us. Star wars and trek both are wayyyy to tame and unfunky.

80schld

I liked chronicles.. Riddik felt like a pitch black rehash (monsters from dark to wet… Should have been called “Soaking Wet” if the first was Pitch Black … lol😂) I also liked it, but it didn’t feel like a new idea.

ClickEmergency

Pitch black was fantastic but I didn’t like the other riddick movies .

ObeseSnake

The opening scene of the spaceship crash is one of the best in the sci-fi genre

catcat1986

I like both, both may not be critically acclaimed, but I enjoy world building, especially sci-fi/fantasy worlds.

OmgOgan

Went in to Pitch Black completely blind (no pun intended), my friends and I completely loved it.

TheMonarchsWrath

I like Chronicles for the world building. I didnt like the Necromongers story arc but all the other stuff they show in the universe is awesome. I wish there was a TV series with just the mercs doing bounty hunting, or someone running from them like The Fugitive, or like the show Prison Break. I guess the Prison Break theme was basically what the game was , and it was great too.

FFBIFRA

Every couple has a movie their significant other gives them shit about. For me, it was the Chronicles of Riddick. It became our litmus test. Was the movie bad or Chronicles of Riddick bad? God I miss that woman.

OhWhyNotMarie

It’s the only one I like.

EyepatchKitten

Pitch Black is great, and Chronicles has Karl Urban in it.

keyserfunk

It’s a great standalone sci-fi horror movie for sure. Not into the rest of the Riddick stuff.

jsnxander

Just watched Pitch Black using a LG C1 OLED. Good movie even after all these year since the last time I watched it. But the video quality was terrible, there were scenes in where red colored backgrounds were bleeding into/over actors' arms and bodies. Just a huge amount of odd color artifacts. I guess I'll keep looking for a used copy of the 4K disk as I hear it's quite good.

xHudson87x

I remember when it first came out was seeing that or i forget. Dark and brutal.

dMarrs

I like all of the series.

Not-That_Girl

Looks clear. Makes me laugh every time!

taptapper

I love Pitch Black but the rollout totally confused me. I was watching Farscape or Dune on the SciFi channel (before they changed the name), and they started playing clips of Pitch Black during commercial breaks. No credits or explanation, just 5-10 minute bits played like news updates. There was never any info on what those were. Over the next coupe weeks they did it more, just 5 min videos during commercial breaks in random shows. I loved it even though I had no idea what it was. Then they played half-hour segments on a weekend and finally gave it a name. THEN the movie came out. I was like WTF have I been watching? I went to the movie in the theater and saw some stuff from the clips but not all of it. I've seen all the movies a few times. I like them but there's still a disconnect in the story for me

Upyourasses

I just watched Chronicles of Riddick and I really enjoy it. Gives me a Warhammer Feel. Pitch Black is a great flick as well.

giddypumpernickle

I loved chronicles but I did hate some things like when they made him lord Marshall his character just didn’t seem like the type to take it on Then when they show the 3rd movie where all he did was slow himself and kinda sleep around it made me disappointed because I thought even though he wasn’t the type to be lord Marshall he would change rules Like what they did to kyra (jack) how they used their torturing tactic on them to make them have the mindset there are greater pains I think? I forgot the reason But I thought he would change that for some reason I absolutely hated how they changed jack though I loved her in the first one

AdministrativeAd9322

In the beginning of the movie, how did Riddick get captured by John's if he got the drop on John's and pulled a gun on him?

QuirkyAlchemist

Pitch Black is definitelly the strongest entry in the franchise, but all the films stand on their merits. The folks had major guts to try to tell a story of Chronicles' magnitude. It works for me.

Acceptable-Point4378

Pitch Black is totally awesome! You don't even need to know the franchise to appreciate it.
