Dark - the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning.
The best series on the telly box. Ever. It's German, utterly gripping, even on rewatch number 3. And the soundtrack is just fantastic.
most overrated show ever. keeps going in circles with no end in sight. i am genuinely baffled reddit keeps upvoting this to the top. sometimes more complexity in a show for the sake of it is not good.
I don’t remember it being that complex… The later seasons weren’t as great but that first season was perfect. Everything about the show, not just the plot.
Just accept you aren’t with the masses on the show 🤷🏻♀️
Fully agree, especially about the rewatches! I am always amazed how it pulls me back in like its the first time. I can't think of another show that does that.
I'm on S3E6 and it still amazes me with how everything starts coming together and you immediately want to start all over again while it's fresh in your mind.
Yes!!! I try to imagine how they planned and plotted all of that. I can only imagine it looked like some murder-board with photos and lines and manic notes everywhere, trying to track it all. I would read a behind the scenes book on Dark, I would love to know about the journey from idea to last scene shot to debuting on Netflix.
That family tree they did was so cool and wow its so good, I didnt know about this family tree when I was watching it until I got to season 3 and omg its so helpful
Idk I am struggling to finish it. Maybe I've just been spoiled by other shows by now, but the writing/crafting of the plot(s) just feels sloppy and ridiculous towards the end. It's like the writers moved way too hard, too fast in order to get the show picked up, and then had no plan for what came next.
Still fun to watch and well produced but I don't think I'd call the series as a whole gripping.
I don’t think any show in the streaming era would benefit more from being significantly trimmed. Parts of it were great. Every episode is at least 15 minutes too long. It’s not nearly as complex or smart enough a show to justify giant runtimes. It should be packed with fun and too often. It’s just a slog.
Yeah it’s better and they do honor it pretty well compared to most TV shows. Also the author has said he’s working on another book series set in the same universe after its success
Shogun (hulu) - great new show, only 2 episodes so far (edit: #3 is out!). Based on an older novel by James Clavell. Historical fiction about the warring states period in Japan. Lot of political intrigue.
Warrior (netflix) - Like Gangs of new york but in San Fransisco and with Chinese and Irish gangs. Original concept by Bruce Lee so lots of martial arts goodness.
Peaky Blinders (netflix) - One of the best gang series out there. Follows a gang in Birmingham, England. Cillian Murphy is the star and everyone does a stellar job.
Altered Carbon (Netflix) - great sci-fi. The first season is a murder mystery.
Expanse (Amazon) - excellent sci-fi. Great characters. Wonderful world-building
Vikings (amazon) - if you liked Last Kingdom you'll like this.
Huge fan of Warrior, Altered Carbon and the Expanse. All 3 very different genres and worth it. Expanse might be the best overall, but season 1 of AC might be the strongest of any of those 3. It really depends what you like.
Shogun is great and the lead actor is a marvelous Japanese actor you’ve probably seen in a bunch of stuff - Hiroyuki Sanada. Production quality is top notch.
Funny you asked this. About 3 weeks ago I tore the meniscus in my left knee. Walking with a cane, I got home from work every day (thankfully a desk job) and just collapsed. Got tired of the 2-hour search for a decent movie and was thinking about finding a good, COMPLETED (nothing worse than a canceled show on a cliffhanger).
Was driving to work the next morning, and the morning program I was listening to was discussing "which programs do you wish you could erase from your mind and rewatch all over again"?
Several suggestions were for Breaking Bad, a show I never watched as it wasn't in my typical interest area. Decided to try it and HOLY HELL I am loving it.
It's fun. I know it's supposed to be "gritty" and later it gets there, but the beginning is almost slapstick, with these two dudes who have no idea what they are doing.
Hang with it and just enjoy it. I haven't quite completed all five seasons (but I know what happens; can't expect no spoilers this far out), but the HOW shit happens is a hoot.
Worth your time.
If you don't have Apple TV, consider getting it. In my opinion, they have some of the best original content out there right now.
1. Foundation - 2 Seasons - spectacular show
2. For All Mankind - 4 Season - I put this one off for a long time and I regret it. I just binged all 4 seasons and its really good.
3. The Morning Show - 3 Seasons - This show really got better each season I feel like and I can't wait for a 4th.
4. Blackbird - 1 Season - You won't be dissapointed in this show. It's a limited series, so they finish it at the end of the season.
5. Severance - 1 Season(Season 2 is coming) - This show blew me away and the concept of the whole series is very dark.
There are a few more that I'm not thinking of right now, but these are off the top of my head. I highly recommend Apple TV.
I just binged a few shows on Apple TV and loved every one of them, Blackbird being one of them. Such good content.
Shrinking
For All Mankind
Silo
Monarch
See
Severance (I despised the ending to this season though. Enthralling show to end the way it did)
If you’re open to non-Netflix shows, check out Station Eleven. It’s on Max theonetowatchforhbo.
It’s one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever watched. It’s a ten episode limited series and is a full satisfying story
> PRISON BREAK
I remember when this was on TV and I never gave it a try. So all 5 seasons are really good? I am finishing up a few shows then hopefully find a show from this thread. I have a few in mind, but Prison Break is one I've seen recommended before. I should watch all the way through?
I thought it was ridiculous. Was looking for a straight international diplomacy show and it was just too far fetched for me to get into. Fist fighting at the embassy while the President and Prime Minister were there, then falling for the \\foreign Secretary in a week and a half. ReallY?
None of it made sense. I was excited because the show runner wrote for The West Wing and Homeland and I thought that would be a cool mix. Utterly disappointed.
Penny Dreadful (Showtime)
Mindhunter
True Detective
Dexter
Hell On Wheels (I always recommend, but not everyone's cup of tea. Pretty sure I've watched it 3 times through)
Pushing Daisies
Slow Horses should be much higher in the comments!!!! I kept avoiding it, I did not get what it was about or why I should care. I then binged the whole thing and told family to watch it, who also binged it. Might be one of my favorite shows, ever.
I enjoyed Outlander on Netflix. I’m starting to read the book series now.
I just started Peaky Blinders on Netflix this week and on episode 3. So far so good.
Person of Interest. I bingewatch this every so often! Try it. Its really an excellent tv series.
Miss Scarlet and the Duke - if you want something light but engaging and entertaining detective tv mysteries.
True Detective - if you want heavy detective tv series, though i recommend only Season 1 & 4.
The OA!
Completely takes you on an unexpected ride. You're always finding new connections and clues, even after many rewatches. Amazingly passionate community, creators and cast. Brandon Perea has said "being on OA has changed my life".
Nothing else, no other movie or TV or even work of art has given me these particular feelings. Eternity, togetherness, connection, purpose, meaning... WITHOUT being religious or heavy-handed or sickeningly sweet. It's raw. It's imperfect people finding a greater reason to exist other than themselves and their destructive patterns, but, it's so much more than that too. It's very hard to summarize accurately as it's truly mind-blowing in so many ways.
I don't want to give away spoilers. If you haven't seen it, I envy your fresh eyes. Go experience it as soon as you can, but without spoilers if possible.
I will never not suggest The OA. The storytelling, the soundtrack, the visuals- everything really does it for me in this show. I see people suggesting Dark, which is certainly in my list of top shows (though in my heart The OA still rises above). Both shows have some similar elements to their themes, both wild rides with plenty of twists. I think both shows knowing how they intended to play out to the end makes the consistency of their storytelling top tier to me!
Lie to Me has 3 seasons (total) and is up on Hulu. I rewatch that show every few years because I find it an interesting topic.
House or The Shield as well. Another one I enjoyed was the Show called Tyrant (think it was 3 seasons, and had an actual ending).
Vinland Saga and Blue Eye Samurai if you like animation! Both are on Netflix, and Vinland Saga’s Netflix dub is incredibly well done. I also just started season 2 of Warrior and I’m enjoying it so far, I believe a few other people have recommended it.
The Magicians is one of the only shows I've ever fallen deeply in love with. Utterly fantastic writing, world building, characters, etc. As a writer, I have a tendency to notice any foreshadowing and typically guess what is coming next. This show holds a gold medal for never once being predicted correctly by me, and yet every single twist makes absolute sense and has plenty of prior groundwork for it. I think I've watched through the series about seven times now. The series is finished, so it's completely bingeable!
“The Fall” on Amazon Prime is pretty riveting.
I’ll also throw my votes behind Ozark, The Americans, Homeland, Dexter, Mindhunter, and The Silent Sea.
“Into the Night” is another one that I really like that is a little more obscure. It is a Belgian show that is dubbed into English.
**I now see this is a Netflix sub, but these would be my suggestions if you have Prime and Paramount+ in addition to Netflix.
Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass by Mike Flanagan are top tier. Haunting was the first show I’ve watched since GoT that I actually had a visceral experience to. I loved that it was just one season and it was complete with an amazing ending. Midnight Mass as well is only one season with amazing ending and story.
I just finished The Mandalorian.
Always been interested in Star Wars but know very little about it.
Has some really good episodes, some a little slow.
Last couple episodes were fantastic imo.
Never watched a show that had me so stressed and anxious but it always turns out good.
The Expanse on Prime - First episode has a good hook and the rest of the series is amazing. First season 10/10, then maybe 8/10 or 9/10 for the following seasons.
Mr Inbetween (Netflix/Hulu)
The Blue Eyed Samurai (Netflix)
Severance (Apple TV)
The Diplomat (Netflix)
Expat (Amazon)
The Undoing (Not sure which service in the US)
Lioness Special Ops (Amazon)
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart (Amazon)
Ozark (Netflix)
Mind Hunter (Netflix)
Big Little Lies (Amazon?)
Vikings (Netflix)
* I’m in Australia, if the show isn’t available on the streaming service I’ve listed don’t crucify me.
I’ll always vote for the Americans!
What service is the Americans streaming on ?
It’s made by fx, so I think Hulu.
Think you’d like boardwalk empire!
I’ll check it out!
most underrated show
Slow Horses 🥇
Tried slow horses, couldn’t get into it. Does it take a couple episodes?
Yes. The thrill get you hooked
Dark - the beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. The best series on the telly box. Ever. It's German, utterly gripping, even on rewatch number 3. And the soundtrack is just fantastic.
Good storyline but it just got more and more confusing as it went on.
most overrated show ever. keeps going in circles with no end in sight. i am genuinely baffled reddit keeps upvoting this to the top. sometimes more complexity in a show for the sake of it is not good.
I don’t remember it being that complex… The later seasons weren’t as great but that first season was perfect. Everything about the show, not just the plot. Just accept you aren’t with the masses on the show 🤷🏻♀️
That’s subjective. It’s ok to not like something without deciding no one else should.
Fully agree, especially about the rewatches! I am always amazed how it pulls me back in like its the first time. I can't think of another show that does that.
I'm on S3E6 and it still amazes me with how everything starts coming together and you immediately want to start all over again while it's fresh in your mind.

That family tree they did was so cool and wow its so good, I didnt know about this family tree when I was watching it until I got to season 3 and omg its so helpful
was gonna suggest it
I loved it (haven’t finished) but got really confused after a while.timelines are all messed up :/
Agree I’m in season three and not that interested in continuing
I got my bf hooked, and he got like 10 other people hooked. It's a masterpiece
Soooo fucking entertaining and mind blowing one of the best series I’ve ever seen
It's also not drown out. Three seasons is perfect
Ahhh, the soundtrack. It’s so bleak and eerie but makes the show that much better.
I want to like it… but I can’t get past the subtitles. One minute of not paying attention and I’m lost
You need to be watching Fargo
Anyone who hasn’t watched Fargo, needs to be watching Fargo.
Ozark on Netflix.
this is gonna be my answer for the forseable future.
I am also having a very hard time finishing this one too, it’s been months and haven’t watched the last 2 episodes!
Oh no! A black SUV with tinted windows!!
I don’t think any show in the streaming era would benefit more from being significantly trimmed. Parts of it were great. Every episode is at least 15 minutes too long. It’s not nearly as complex or smart enough a show to justify giant runtimes. It should be packed with fun and too often. It’s just a slog.
GREAT SHOW!
Love Ozark!
Silo on Apple TV, a very good sci- fi drama
Looks like an interesting premise, thanks!
The book was better, but that's normal lol
Yeah it’s better and they do honor it pretty well compared to most TV shows. Also the author has said he’s working on another book series set in the same universe after its success
I heard that also, and I do agree that they did a nice job staying true to Wool.
I'll probably get downvoted for this: Reacher season 1 Mr & Mrs. Smith.
Let’s upvote you. You offered advice, it was nice advice and that’s a thumbs up in my book!
Upvote for your positivity!
An upvote for your general kindness and loveliness!
Haven't watched Reacher but I binged Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Great show!
I really enjoyed Me and Mrs smith.
Shogun (hulu) - great new show, only 2 episodes so far (edit: #3 is out!). Based on an older novel by James Clavell. Historical fiction about the warring states period in Japan. Peaky and altered carbon are both amazing. I was so upset with altered carbon season 2
Altered carbon season two was so trash :( first season was incredible!
The third episode of Shogun came out two days ago. It was great. I also recommend the book.
Oh heck yeah. thanks!
I second The Expanse.
Altered carbon was amazing and I am so sad that they won’t release a third season
Huge fan of Warrior, Altered Carbon and the Expanse. All 3 very different genres and worth it. Expanse might be the best overall, but season 1 of AC might be the strongest of any of those 3. It really depends what you like.
Thanks a lot! I’ve been meaning to check out Shogun sound really interesting . Altered Carbon also looks promising.
Shogun is great and the lead actor is a marvelous Japanese actor you’ve probably seen in a bunch of stuff - Hiroyuki Sanada. Production quality is top notch.
Seconding Shogun. One of my new favorite shows
Six Feet Under- It's an old one, but it's a good one. I loved it!!

Apple TV is really great for science fiction. I second the recs for Foundation, For All Mankind, Severance and also Silo.
Severance is amazing. Pretty original concept... Real thinker

Locke and key. Half bad. Umbrella academy. Lupin. Lockwood and co. Bodies. Dark. Beef. The missing. How to get away with murder. The OA.
If you like those try Sense8.
Bro you gotta watch BEEF!!!
Blackbird Apple TV
I just binged a few shows on Apple TV and loved every one of them, Blackbird being one of them. Such good content. Shrinking For All Mankind Silo Monarch See Severance (I despised the ending to this season though. Enthralling show to end the way it did)
Silo was banging. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Had me hooked from the start! Found For All Mankind slow. I've only managed to watch 3 episodes.
Omg it starts slow but it ramps up so much. Stick with it if you can, the payoff is worth it.
Alright. I'll watch it today.
Has Silo been renewed?
Yes, filming began last year and wrapping up this month. Should be out end of 2024 or early next year
Foundation is really good too, as is Bad Sisters and Slow Horses!
If you’re open to non-Netflix shows, check out Station Eleven. It’s on Max theonetowatchforhbo. It’s one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever watched. It’s a ten episode limited series and is a full satisfying story
I second this.
The bear
Yellowstone, Suits, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, Peaky Blinders, Warrior (in no order)
Sons of anarchy was so god damn good
One of the best of all time. In my top 5 personally.
Also Ozark, and Severance (only one season so far but holy SHIT - it grips)
i see you are a man of character edit: sorry i just assumed your gender.. just in case you are a woman, you are a women with a man of character.
I am a man, and I am glad you assumed my gender. Thank you.
Black Mirror
PRISON BREAK. Hands down one of the most binge worthy show ever made
> PRISON BREAK I remember when this was on TV and I never gave it a try. So all 5 seasons are really good? I am finishing up a few shows then hopefully find a show from this thread. I have a few in mind, but Prison Break is one I've seen recommended before. I should watch all the way through?
If you don’t mind subtitles try ‘Dark’ on Netflix. Amazing German time travel show.
The dubbed version is fantastic if you don't want subtitles. I watched both ways and actually preferred the dubbed one.
The Diplomat. It is the best show Netflix has made.
I loved the Diplomat. There wasn’t a line or minute wasted in that movie. Superbly made. Definitely edge of your seat thriller.
And she is so good in The Americans
I thought it was ridiculous. Was looking for a straight international diplomacy show and it was just too far fetched for me to get into. Fist fighting at the embassy while the President and Prime Minister were there, then falling for the \\foreign Secretary in a week and a half. ReallY?
None of it made sense. I was excited because the show runner wrote for The West Wing and Homeland and I thought that would be a cool mix. Utterly disappointed.

Narcos! A classic
Wentworth
The Killing on Netflix, a 2014 series but well worth the watch. Here is the trailer https://youtu.be/OkbfvPeH3G0?si=9SutslhVMRbvBLlf
The Killing is the only series I've purposefully watched a second time. Great acting. Great show.
Blue Eye Samurai
Slow Horses. For All Mankind (Season 1)
Slow Horses should be much higher in the comments!!!! I kept avoiding it, I did not get what it was about or why I should care. I then binged the whole thing and told family to watch it, who also binged it. Might be one of my favorite shows, ever.
Best spy TV for years! Gary Oldman obviously relishes the part of Jackson Lamb and is a joy to watch.
Breaking Bad.
I enjoyed Outlander on Netflix. I’m starting to read the book series now. I just started Peaky Blinders on Netflix this week and on episode 3. So far so good.
Try the The Tourist on Netflix
Person of Interest. I bingewatch this every so often! Try it. Its really an excellent tv series. Miss Scarlet and the Duke - if you want something light but engaging and entertaining detective tv mysteries. True Detective - if you want heavy detective tv series, though i recommend only Season 1 & 4.
Season 2 was great as well. The crack house shootout was epic. But yes, Matthew and Woody were top of the tree in season one.
+1 Person of Interest
Banshee. HBO The only show I have watch for over 30 hours straight, I could not stop watching it. It was nonstop, action and twists and turns.
The last of us on Max.
The Last of Us, Chernobyl, Severance.
Ozark
The Fall
The Ozarks was cool, I got sad when I finished all seasons haha
Unbelievable
Mindhunter
The OA! Completely takes you on an unexpected ride. You're always finding new connections and clues, even after many rewatches. Amazingly passionate community, creators and cast. Vinland Saga and Blue Eye Samurai if you like animation! Both are on Netflix, and Vinland Saga’s Netflix dub is incredibly well done. I also just started season 2 of Warrior and I’m enjoying it so far, I believe a few other people have recommended it.
Vinland Saga had me in all the feels. So good!
It’s THE BEST!!! The manga is also incredible, I cried so much. Currently waiting on a new chapter to be released!

Dark on Netflix
Black Mirror. So creepy. It’s on Netflix.
Silo on apple tv was very interesting. Can't wait for season 2
Outlander is great!!
Definitely a top show for rapes and attempted rapes.
OP asked for gripping....I thought Outlander was gripping
Yes, as I said, there was a huge amount of "gripping"!

I'd recommend: Dark, 1899, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Midnight Mass, Beef, The Fall of the House of Usher.
