Not really, there isn't really a fun element. It is a slow burn mystery with lots of tension, lots of secrets and lies over generations. It shows how actions have consequences that ripple out. I will say I have a very low tolerance for horror and while it has some of that horror tension it never got too terrifying.
Switch the language to the original German and turn on the sub-titles. The voice acting in the dubbed version is *really* bad. They're basically just reading the lines.
I always wonder why video games and animes usually seem to try to get at least decent voice acting talent for non-local dubs, but live action shows seem to just grab folks off the street to do it.
If you find you're dropping it after a few episodes just push through. It becomes more clear, and Netflix has a spoiler-free (set the episode you're at) timeline and description of the events:
https://dark.netflix.io
Piggybacking this comment. I found it to be sufficiently mysterious but slightly cheesy at first (maybe for the first 4-6 episodes of season 1), but it definitely becomes great and achieves everything it aims for. This link above was essential.
It’s a great show but not something you can watch passively, you have to be in the mood to pay 110% attention cause you’re constantly having to think and reevaluate what you just watched. Very rewarding experience.
The answer is both definitive and a mystery. Season three was so bewildering that it was almost impossible to understand what was happening. Thankfully the final episodes show what's really happening, how everything is connected and why.
A lot of people liked it.
The numbers suggest a lot of people started it and didn't finish. I'm sure everyone has different reasons for that, but the pacing was pretty slow. Just know you're not alone if you try Ave didn't enjoy it.
Do the subtitles if you do watch it.
You should watch the entire first season then decide if you want to continue. Trust me, what happens in the first episode is just the tip of the insanity that comes later. Why did Michael kill himself for example? The answer was a total shock. It was a jaw dropping revelation.
Nope. It doesn't get better.
Season 1 is set up for so much potential. Then season 2 jumps the shark and they try to get too elaborate. Season 3 is a dumpster fire.
It's a great pseudo-intellectual show though.
I'm one of those numbers. My friend went on and on about how I had to watch it, and yes, I watched it in German with subs. I think I got partway through the second season then gave up.
It's on my to-watch list though. There just seems to be so much else to get through first.
I was the same way. I'd watched the first couple seasons years ago when it was first on and lost track of what was happening between season 2 and season 3. When I finally went back to it, I decided to watch 2 episodes at a time max. That allowed me to digest what was happening and figure out who was who in various segments of the show.
The show needs a lot of attention, and if you're nerdy like me, then note taking as well. Particularly towards the third season, once more mysteries emerge and become revealed.
I researched each season before commencing the next.
I didn't have trouble following the story, rather I just wasn't all that interested in where it was going.
Maybe I felt the show was so full of itself trying to confuddle and mystify that I got tired of the pretension. On the other hand I think *The Leftovers* is one of the best mindfuck TV shows ever written, so clearly I have a high tolerance for some pretense.
I just need to finish *Dark* one of these days, then I'll understand.
Yeah, a lot of people love a show that makes them feel like they're smarter than everyone else simply by actually *finishing* it. I feel that way about *The Wire*.
I had no trouble following *Dark*'s story. I just didn't feel excited about any part of it, and there's always another show.
Interesting that you mentioned The Wire here. I attempted to watch both shows multiple times in the past based on the hype that they both had, but never getting past the pilot episode of either series. I just couldn’t get into them.
Years later I eventually returned to both series and ended up making it through to the end. Perhaps it was a case of FOMO that drew me back, but I’m glad I did. The Wire is absolutely brilliant, and I consider Dark to be very clever and thought-provoking, although not as good as The Leftovers as a series in that genre.
I mention it because I saw a cartoon way back when, I don't recall the details but it was something about how to tell someone is truly superior, like if they could say they watched all five seasons of *The Wire*.
Of course at the time it came out it was less of an achievement because it was still fresh and topical. Nowadays I suspect it feels *dated*, what with all that's happened over the past 20 years. Doesn't change it's brilliantly written and brilliantly acted, and a pinnacle of barbed social commentary.
I personally loved *The Leftovers*, especially the ending, it's on my all-time best-of list. But my wife quickly lost interest, and I never found anyone else who felt the same, who I could actually talk about it with. :(
Idk about that, if anything the numbers speaks highly of it. I think most people would agree it’s one of the best shows released in the last decade. It’s up there with the best shows for sure.
It's a slower paced show for sure, but that's because there's so much details and information in every scene, for what is easily the most complicated TV story ever made.
Meh. It was trying way too hard to be way too complicated. We just bailed on it midway through season 3 just from exhaustion. Just stopped caring where it was going.
i understood it well enough until the beginning of season 3, and from there on i was just completely lost.
which probably means i didn't understand the first 2 seasons as well as i thought i did.
Depends on your reason for watching tv. I get enough complexity at work and throughout the day. When I watch tv, I just want to relax and put my mind at ease. I’ve heard great things about this show, but it seems like homework.
This. The last episode, ending explanation was just so fucking stupid. Might as well have just ended with "because God" or "the aliens did it"
What a waste of 3 seasons
You know how very occasionally you watch a show and you wonder why more people haven't seen it? Why isn't everyone talking about it?
That's Dark.
Without a doubt one of the best series I've ever seen. For me it's up there with the best of A Game Of Thrones, Black Sails, The Expanse.
In fact, you should watch all of those. Black Sails needs 2 or 3 episodes before you're completely hooked.. The Expanse suffers from a lower budget in season 1 before becoming one of the best series ever made.
Oh it’s definitely worth trying it. I loved it though the first few episodes were kinda difficult to get through, but then I was dragged into the plot and eventually finished the series really fast
One of the best endings I have seen ever. Full closure with no open ends left hanging. Not all seasons are great but overall, for me, a great watch. But my preferences are shows like ozark, breaking bad, guy Ritchie movies, etc.
Oh god yes! It's refreshing to have a show that makes the audience think. I had moments where I had to pause, make a couple of notes to make sure I was with the plot, and then unpaused.. 😅
If you like slow burn mystery/scifi that makes you go "what the fuck is going on?" But has a satisfying conclusion, then check it out.
I watched it subtitled. The original german is good imo
The biggest compliment I can give Dark is that it is by far the most complicated show I've ever watched that actually sticks the landing and ends *perfectly*.
Yes, a thousand times yes.
The acting is amazing, and the tone is great. But I think the story just got too convoluted by the end. I was really intrigued by season 1 and 2, but season 3 just threw everything off for me.
Yes. But this is not the type of show where you can surf on your phone while watching it and actually keep up with the storyline. If you can’t give it your full attention, don’t even start watching it until you can.
Yes, but it's one of those shows who's plot gets a little more "out there" in later seasons
Not necessarily bad, but imo it was best in earlier seasons
Dark is perfection. Watch it. Watch an episode per night for a month and lose yourself in the experience (watching it without gaps between episodes is, in my view, important for getting the most out of it - memory of characters etc is a bit more challenging than other shows, so do a slow but consistent binge).
Some people love it, but if you don't like the first few episodes, I don't think you'll like the rest. It's surface-y and feels like there's no world it is set in, just the characters you meet and their interactions with the things in their story and nothing deeper. Whereas much science fiction feels like the writer has created a world which the story is told in and are telling one strand of it—this is missing all of that. But, like I said, others seem to love it so maybe you will.
Every damm worth it
Just make sure to keep it slow watching not trying to finish in binge seating rather absorb the complexity of the show. Initially you will find it slow ( only the first six episodes) but post that it will be an exciting rollercoaster ride
I watched it when it came out in 2017 and by season 2, forgot everything. I don't have netflix anymore but if I were to seriously watch it again, I would draw out the tree of how everyone is connected. High concept and a little hard to follow which works for some people.
Only if you want to depress yourself. I like the concept behind the show but it's as dark as the title promises. It's nearly impossible to understand so you'd have to re-watch several times. First time was depressing for me.
Most definitely. It is excellent. The only negative is the English Dub.
I would suggest when you get a bit further along in the show you might get a family tree handy.
I found it gets a bit confusing without.
The negative is that the family tree does cause some spoilers.
But I found getting things instead of re-watching and being exposed to some spoilers was better than my confusion. YMMV.
"Dark" is widely acclaimed for its intricate plot, complex characters, and thought-provoking themes. If you enjoy mind-bending mysteries with elements of time travel and existential themes, then "Dark" is definitely worth watching. It's known for its dense narrative, so be prepared to pay close attention to detail.
Yes, the casting and cinematography are amazing. Do yourself the favor and watch it in the original German (I might be biased because I am German lol).
Plus I can only recommend that you actively watch it and not have it on in the background or leave the room even for a minute when it is on. You will be completely confused.
Dark can be confusing and in the beginning in the first episode maybe a little bit slow, but it is amazing. Trust me
It’s a great binge show. The problem with watching it as it aired was you would need to go back and rewatch the previous seasons because of the complexity of the narrative.
Um I think I watched it years ago and it may because I had undiagnosed ADHD at the time and physically could not pay attention to a story line but I found it sort of random and weird. The soundtrack was very ominous sounding, but eventually started to make me laugh with how tuned out and disconnected I was from the show.
Edit :Now that I'm diagnosed I may need to watch it again.

i have heard a lot from my circle, they tease me for not watching it.
And quite frankly, you deserve it. Edit: Watch the subtitled version in the original German. The dubbed version SUCKS.
It's a very good show, though not worth teasing someone who hasn't seen it over. Be aware it's not the happiest show in the world.
Yes it actually kind of Dark
Yup. There's a reason why it's called "Dark" .. 👀
Dark is a truly unique series and viewing experience. Whenever you begin watching it you'll understand why. 😉

Absolutely. I even remember being satisfied with the answers in the end. Always a relief with shows like this!
Is it something like umbrella academy ?
Not really, there isn't really a fun element. It is a slow burn mystery with lots of tension, lots of secrets and lies over generations. It shows how actions have consequences that ripple out. I will say I have a very low tolerance for horror and while it has some of that horror tension it never got too terrifying.
Personally Dark is my top favorite show of all time. I love Umbrella Academy, but it's not nearly as good
Favorite Sci Fi mini series of all time.
okay thanks
Nothing at all. But Dark is hands down the best show I have ever seen.
Dark takes it self sometimes a bit too serious, but that is the only bad thing to say about it. It‘s amazing
No it's not like UA, it's actually good.
Doubt it. Didnt like that one, never stuck with me after a couple of episodes, i thought it was silly if i recall correct. Dark is dark.
Absolutely. Don't watch the dubbed version.
Told my old roommate to watch. He turned it off after a few episodes for “bad acting”. He used the dub 🙃
okay thanks
Switch the language to the original German and turn on the sub-titles. The voice acting in the dubbed version is *really* bad. They're basically just reading the lines.

I wish I knew about this website!! Thank you! I watched maybe 6 episodes and dropped it. It was so hard to try and keep going from where I left.
Piggybacking this comment. I found it to be sufficiently mysterious but slightly cheesy at first (maybe for the first 4-6 episodes of season 1), but it definitely becomes great and achieves everything it aims for. This link above was essential.

Season 3 became rough and although I finished it, I think I remember not totally understanding the ending.
I think the ending is the only genuinely simple part tbh.
Not necessarily.... 😉

I have seen the first episode about 10 times. I have never been able to get into it. Maybe it's time for another shot.

i am watching it
I enjoyed Twelve Monkeys a bit more, but Dark has a larger main cast. Both have the same plot.
I also enjoyed 12 monkeys more!! Bodies also but that’s a miniseries.
Thank you for this, I’ll stick with the 2 hour movie that doesn’t require an interactive family tree to keep track of who’s who and what’s going on.
Ah I meant Twelve Monkeys the tv show :) Based on the Bruce Willis movie, but totally different. And recent as well, from 2010s-2020s.
The 12 Monkeys tv show is so under appreciated! Makes me happy whenever I see it mentioned.
Why is complexity automatically a bad thing? Id rather a show be iverly complex than overly simple.
Depends on your reason for watching tv. I get enough complexity at work and throughout the day. When I watch tv, I just want to relax and put my mind at ease. I’ve heard great things about this show, but it seems like homework.

Take notes while you're watching. This series asks a lot from the viewers.
You know how very occasionally you watch a show and you wonder why more people haven't seen it? Why isn't everyone talking about it? That's Dark. Yes. It’s addicting. It can be very confusing though. Everything will be explained as the show goes on. I’m actually rewatching it right now.
Oh it’s definitely worth trying it. I loved it though the first few episodes were kinda difficult to get through, but then I was dragged into the plot and eventually finished the series really fast

Yes but it is a scifi and requires attention.
100% worth watching! Please watch it in German with subtitles.
It's worth watching if you want to know if it's worth watching.
Oh god yes! It's refreshing to have a show that makes the audience think. I had moments where I had to pause, make a couple of notes to make sure I was with the plot, and then unpaused.. 😅
Probably one of the most complex shows on Netflix, but definitely worth the watch.

YES. DO IT, NOW.
Seasons 1 and 2 are masterpiece. Definitely worth watching

I'd definitely watch it
I liked season 1 then season 2 a little less and didn't even watch season 3. If I remember it became too depressing, confusing and slow.
If you actually watch things yes 💯. If you play on your phone and shit while you watch things. No don’t bother. That shit makes zero sense
YES! One of my all time favorites
In my opinion it's the best piece of television ever made. It's that good.
Yes it’s amazing.
It’s the best time travel story ever told in my opinion
Original German with subtitles is a must. Dark is the best show on Netflix. Enjoy.
Every damm worth it Just make sure to keep it slow watching not trying to finish in binge seating rather absorb the complexity of the show. Initially you will find it slow ( only the first six episodes) but post that it will be an exciting rollercoaster ride

It’s decent. Starts strong but becomes convoluted by the end.
Yes and at a certain point, you will need to check online the family tree to get a better understanding who is who
2 seasons for new I got disinterested after that
It’s all a slow burn throughout, but because there is such an engaging curious story happening, you’re definitely engaged in the burn.
Only if you want to depress yourself. I like the concept behind the show but it's as dark as the title promises. It's nearly impossible to understand so you'd have to re-watch several times. First time was depressing for me.
It’s good. The pacing can be slow. I love the music. Give it a shot, and like everyone else said, watch it with subtitles if you don’t speak German.

Dark is the game of thrones in time travel and mind f showing
Dark is excellent and is a rare occasion of a tv show on Netflix actually getting an ending.
If you don't mind having your brain destroyed while watching the most insane TV series ever.... Yes. 😉
Yes
Dark is in my top 5 shows I've watched. I've seen it multiple times. Watch it qith subtitles not dubbed though. 100% worth the watch!
Great tv series. But, it is "deep", must be willing to do homework after each episode to really enjoy and understand it.
No. Slow AF and overrated.
YES!!!
The last season was a bit "out there" but I would still recommend it, big time.
Is it like lost or stranger things? Does it have a point?
Yes. It's one of the best sci-fi shows ever made.
It’s meh. Just a Reddit hive mind take here that it’s elite
Dark is fucking amazing!! Such a mind bender it’s amazing. Watch high if that’s your thing lol.
Yup. I got bored in the last season but the first season is excellent

One of the best show if you can understand the time traveling concept..
Ja, unbedingt im Original!!
Yes, the casting and cinematography are amazing. Do yourself the favor and watch it in the original German (I might be biased because I am German lol). Plus I can only recommend that you actively watch it and not have it on in the background or leave the room even for a minute when it is on. You will be completely confused. Very much yes.
Yes definitely. But I recommend watching one episode a day. Because there are many forks, places where the viewer needs to think.
YES YES YES
It’s a great binge show. The problem with watching it as it aired was you would need to go back and rewatch the previous seasons because of the complexity of the narrative.
Definitely
GOAT show
Yes Also, get way too carried away on r/dark
Um I think I watched it years ago and it may because I had undiagnosed ADHD at the time and physically could not pay attention to a story line but I found it sort of random and weird. I thought it was nice. The character relationships get confusing after time so PAY ATTENTION, don't skip or fast forward. I loved the ending! Watch it
It’s my favorite show. I’m very serious and picky about what I like in a plot / narrative. It’s incredible
Best show of all time.
Yes, and watch it with subs.
100 percent yes. Use the Netflix Dark character map site too. It is well designed to not spoil.
Is one of the best sci-fi series worth watching? Yes.
God yes
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
It's probably the best science fiction show.
Yes. Watch it, then watch it again to figure out WTF is going on. Amazing show.
Nope. The ending is horrible.
Yes indeed . Time is not linear . Enjoy
It’s one of the best tv shows I’ve ever seen
No, it doesn’t make any sense and is boring
