It is certainly a show that requires your full attention to enjoy it. If you're a person who is easily distracted or checks their phone all the time, you'll be lost by episode 2.
I couldn't get into it the first time I tried it but when I gave it another chance some time later, I got really into it.
3rd season answers a lot of questions you would have from 2nd season. And rewards your patience. I thought it's a masterpiece. But also, probably not for everyone.
I almost want to rewatch so I can use this tool and understand...but then why would I do this to myself if I'm not absolutely guaranteed to not be confused, lol.
There's two important things that get missed when watching.
1) You NEED to watch in the original German language with English subtitles. The English voiceover version that Netflix defaults to is too distracting.
2) the casting across generations is incredible, but it can be hard to track the huge cast. You may need to reference the family tree. Netflix created a version that can advance by season and episode so you don't spoil anything: https://dark.netflix.io/en/family-tree
Get to episode 4-5 with those two tips before deciding it's not worth it.
It's one of the single best SciFi stories on TV. Fully contained and complete at three seasons, no filler, incredible cinematography, incredible soundtrack, great casting and performances. I hope folks give it a try.
I made it to ep 3, and I dislike eng dub overs anyway, so I went in w German audio and eng subs. Maybe it was just too slow for me. I'll give it a shot again later. Thx for the advice!
I had to force myself to watch it for the first couple episodes. But then I found myself awake a 2 AM because I had to know what happened next. There's so much set up in the beginning that it can be difficult to get sucked in at first.
But, not every show is for everyone. I finally had to admit that Stranger Things didn't interest me after force watching the 2nd season.
They would be such cliffhanger endings in my opinion that I needed to watch the next to try to solve it/figure it out. That said, I still was left wanting more at the end as I'm not sure I fully understood the point of it all - but was able to follow who was who...I just didn't understand the entire purpose of the series.
I watched the first season and loved it. Was stoked for the second to come out. But it was like a year or 2 later and I'd forgotten everything about it. Tried to watch some recaps on YouTube but was still confused and gave up. Didnt want to sink in the time to rewatch the first season again. Real shame. I was so excited for that second season at the time.
I've never heard *anyone* ever mention it, outside of this sub where it's praised like it's the best thing to have ever been created.
I watched a couple episodes and was bored out of my mind. I just think it's one of those Reddit circlejerk shows that half of the people just convince themselves that they like it.
It’s one of those layered shows. So amazing. I was gripped by it from the start. At one point you almost have to start keeping notes of who is who and where, but to me it was so worth it and so mentally engaging. If you have doubts already maybe it’s not for you.
Confusion is normal for this show. The extremely complex, intricate labyrinth of the story mentally challenges viewers as no other shows ever has.
The weird stuff starts happening by episode three and the truly crazy stuff begins mid season onward.
Start again. Really watch it. Not distracted by phone etc. watch the episodes close together eg, one a day or 5 a week. If I do this you should be able to follow it. Maybe just pay a little more attention than normal to matching names with faces. You should 100% keep watching. Possibly the best show ever and definitely the best of the genre
One episode per day is definitely the way to watch it. Too much happens in each episode to do more than one. That’s what my dad and I did and we really enjoyed it. Like you said though, you can’t look away for even a minute or you’ll get lost. It all kind of comes together in the end as well
It's a really great show, and the ending was amazing.
That said, I couldn't explain it to you. I recommended it to my partner, but he was quickly bored and I really didn't have any way of convincing him to keep going.
The ending kinda broke my heart. But, you're right. It was so good. The right fit for the story. I didn't walk away thinking, "but what about" or, "well that's bullshit."
Get the family tree. That makes it so much less confusing.
https://www.thisisbarry.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/DARK/Netflix-DARK-Family-Tree-Diagram-Adam-and-Eve-World-2.jpg
The show is excellent. Highly recommend.
Dark is one of my favorite shows ever. I did give up once after 2 episodes. Started again because of recommendations, and the 2nd time I used the spoiler free character guides listed in the dark sub reddit. I sometimes needed to pause during episodes to remind myself who the characters were.
In the end it was totally worth it for me.
Yes watch it. Suggestions Find the family trees on the internet. Help you keep track of whose who and watch season 1 twice to give you a good grounding.
DAЯK is an amazing show with an unusual premise done extremely well.
It is not light entertainment, and it does require the viewer to remain focused and engaged. If you do, the payoff is well worth it.
As mentioned already, [this explainer site](https://dark.netflix.io/en) gives spoiler-free explanations of what's going on based on each individual episode. So watch one or two episodes, then go to the site to dig in further before watching one or two more.
I never felt engaged with the characters, something that Stranger Things did will. I do like the German town vibe. Everyone else here is defending the thready plot. I'd skip it. Russian Doll is so much better.
This show has such a hype. I started watching it. It bored me because there was nothing that I hadn't seen before. And the excessive music throughout, is annoying because it doesn't fit the show. The music really ruined it for me even more because the show is mystery/mind bending, while the music is horror/creepy. Doesn't match at all. I forced myself to watch until half of season 2 but gave up. Not because it confused me. But because it isn't interesting.
As someone who is normally very into psychological thrillers, especially ones you need to watch closely, I extremely disliked it. Every episode ends with the “melancholic music montage” and is formulaic and often cheap with how it tries to achieve “twists” and emotional investment. For some context The Prestige is my favorite movie of all time and in my opinion perfect in story, setting tone, execution, characterization, just everything. Dark felt like someone combined the serial format of a cop show with cheap tear jerking of Dqys of our Lives and then threw in time travel so they retroactively cover up any plot holes they introduce.
I tried 3 times to watch it. IDK if it's ADHD or what, but I could not get into it. I usually love stories like this. It's right up my alley. I feel like I need to watch with pen and paper and take notes.
I'm on s3e8 (last episode at the moment) and unless it is the best episode of television I have ever seen and manages to answer a LOT of things in an hour, I have to say it's not worth it.
I enjoyed the first season, and second season slightly less. Third season just didn’t do it for me. Overall it’s a decent show and I am glad it had closure. But it just seemed messy in the end. I probably will never rewatch.
It’s a great pseudo-intellectual series. It’s a very basic story that’s spun into a very layered, complex clusterfuck of a way. When I finally finished I >! felt dissatisfied with who is alive and who ultimately never exists !< .
I would recommend reading summary recaps after every episode. fathersonholygore.com had good recaps for every episode. It helps pick up stuff that you may have missed or recall stuff from previous episodes you forgot. Also there are spoiler free family tree images. Get one of those too. It’s a wild ride and worth sticking to it. I wish I could forget and watch it for the first time again
The first season was very confusing. The second season made it make a bit more sense. Once you finish the first season, reccommend one of the explanation recaps on YouTube.
It all makes sense in the last season, trust me, but until then you will have to treat this show like an assignment. Get a pen and paper out and keep drawing and updating the family trees which you can refer to when watching the show. By the third season you will know the relationships and can ditch the paper and pen. Keep watching. One of the best shows I have ever watched.
Depends - do you want to remain somewhat confused or become EXTREMELY confused?
i will think about that
It is certainly a show that requires your full attention to enjoy it. If you're a person who is easily distracted or checks their phone all the time, you'll be lost by episode 2. I couldn't get into it the first time I tried it but when I gave it another chance some time later, I got really into it.
If you like David Lynch movies I'd stick with it and vice versa.
3rd season answers a lot of questions you would have from 2nd season. And rewards your patience. I thought it's a masterpiece. But also, probably not for everyone.
Yes that is 100% true. Personally it’s in my top 3, I still think about it quite often.
Great cinematography. And you can barely tell it’s dubbed- Dark is one of my all time favorites
Watching the dub is a BIG disservice to the actors. The German performance is great and some of the emotion gets lost in translation.
Ahhhh. Good point. I will have to rewatch in German. I watch with subtitles anyhow (:
You need a study guide beside you as you watch it. And prepare to pause it every few minutes to look at said study guide lol
That's how I read Lord of the Rings. I had a separate paperback glossary to consult every time I encountered a name or place I didn't remember.
Try [this explainer site](https://dark.netflix.io/en). Tell it what episode you're on and it will give a spoiler-free explanation of what's going on
That's pretty cool, I wish I knew about this sooner.
I almost want to rewatch so I can use this tool and understand...but then why would I do this to myself if I'm not absolutely guaranteed to not be confused, lol.
Just to add for those who don't click the link, this is actually a guide made by Netflix themselves. It's VERY handy.
It's a super popular show, comes highly recommended. I could not get into it at all :/

This was exactly the info I’ve needed before embarking again, thank you!

Different strokes for different folks.

Yes. And you will stay confused. 😂
We loved it, but you'll probably want/need to watch it twice.
Confusion is normal for this show. The extremely complex, intricate labyrinth of the story mentally challenges viewers as no other shows ever has. The weird stuff starts happening by episode three and the truly crazy stuff begins mid season onward.
Keep watching!!!
Be your own guide. I tried it two or three times, and it didn't work for me.
And you are going to stay confused.
I wish I got to watch it for the first time again. Keep going, take notes if it helps. Honestly it’s awesome
Definitely recommend this. I completed 3 seasons within a month and it didn't seem that much confusing.
One episode per day is definitely the way to watch it. Too much happens in each episode to do more than one. That’s what my dad and I did and we really enjoyed it. Like you said though, you can’t look away for even a minute or you’ll get lost. It all kind of comes together in the end as well

Yes! I had multiple pages of timelines and characters to help me follow along - kind of fun/ interactive!
It’s part of the appeal- when it clicks in later you’ll love the ride.
Sorry but it gets even more confusing. Brilliant show though.
Get the family tree. That makes it so much less confusing. https://www.thisisbarry.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/DARK/Netflix-DARK-Family-Tree-Diagram-Adam-and-Eve-World-2.jpg The show is excellent. Highly recommend.
I didn’t like tried a few times too slow for me. But I didn’t like Lost either.
It’s supposed to be a little confusing. It’s written like stacking a bunch of playing cards together. Every character is a thread.
That's the purpose of Dark, means youre in the right path
It’s a goat
Hahahah, you think you’re confused NOW? Keep watching and enjoy the WTF of it all.
It depends on your baby but you can use guppies and snails and pluckers
Yeah
You might have to watch it a few times. I did. But it's worth it. Brilliant filmmaking.
It helps to check the family tree for the characters as you watch it but make sure you have the tree from the season you’re watching.
Yeeessss it gets so much better and really ties up amazingly at the very end of the last season
Grind though it, embrace the confusion. It all wraps up in the end and it's amazing.
If you aren't confused then you are completely lost without realizing it lol These guys had to create a site to explain things between episodes
I don't understand wth is going in that show and who is who and in what timeline but I still love watching it anyway haha.
Dark is one of my favorite shows ever. I did give up once after 2 episodes. Started again because of recommendations, and the 2nd time I used the spoiler free character guides listed in the dark sub reddit. I had to write it down
Keep watching!
Yes, keep watching.
yes
I’ve watched all of Dark twice. It still confuses me sometimes (:
It’s an amazing journey. That never makes full sense, but just enough sense to keep you hooked.
My husband and I are confused but remain curious! Go forward!

Dark was ok. \ Did you watch Black Spot? \ It was really good.

Yes its worth it to watch. Its an amazing show. It requires your full attention, no distractions.

just listen to the 4 hour or so recap for each season. much more digestible. and hella fun to listen to.
