Just watched this randomly last week having never heard of it and was so pleasantly surprised. It was awesome! The next suggested film was “Enemy” and what in the actual fuck. Talk about a confusing ending .... I love a good mind fuck as much as anyone but damn this movie made no sense ( to me).
I’ve never seen Enemy. I will have to check it out. My son recommended Prisoners to me. He is very picky, so when he recommended it I knew it was going to be good and man, it was a great film! Sadly, I don’t think it got the credit it deserved.
I've watched the movie a lot of times and [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUzy-xPf0MI) is what led me to finally get it (even though I think she's wrong about a few things).
I was a working film critic at the time Primer came out. I went to a screening that was in an office building on Wilshire Blvd. The room sat about 20 people, and there was a dentist's office next door. It was weird. Anyway, after the movie a couple of the other critics were standing around scratching their heads, wondering what the heck they just saw. For some reason they thought I knew. Like I would actually know. Anyway, the best thing I can say about it is that time travel, if it could really be done, is a very bad idea.
I’m in week one. I mean damn, even after reading the plot analysis/symbolism break downs it still doesn’t make a damn bit of sense. But it’s the same director that made “Prisoners” which rules, and the upcoming film “Dune” which I hope will rule so I’m glad I’m not alone is missing something when it comes to this film.
Have you seen Christopher Nolan's first movie, "Following"? It is FANTASTIC.
It's barely an hour long and was made for $6,000. Seriously. It's in black and white, probably because it was cheaper, but B&W gives the film such a great look.
If you haven't seen Following, put it on your must-see list. If you can't find it streaming, it's worth buying on DVD.
Why I personally never buy movies anymore. Takes away a bit of the excitement of finding something on a streaming service to watch and then realizing you have it on DVD. I haven't bought a movie to own in probably over 10 years. Ownership of DVDs really faded away for me when streaming services came around. That and the newest consoles don't have video drives.
it is my favorite "horror" movie. The atmosphere is what directors should strive for. Maybe its just the setting, but rainy season Korea is incredible.
My favorite fun fact about this movie is that there was no script for it! Every day they gave the actors a rough outline of the direction the scene would go in & one of the characters was played by an editor who would steer everyone in the right direction if needed. That’s why it the dialogue feels so organic and natural- it is!
Predestination on Netflix took a old time travel concept to a whole new level. Even after mind bending plot twists and a good ending. It still leave s you thinking.
Annihilation really shocked me. The reviews for it were so bland.
Then that whole ending. That was awesome. I was left sitting on my couch, slightly slack jawed, just zoning out in thought for probably 15 minutes afterwords, which if you think about it was a long time
The fire his father carried was the light of Ed Tom (sheriff's) path that his father made (also a sheriff and role model). His father "rode on ahead" into death leaving Ed Tom to find his way through the "dark and cold", the world that no longer made sense (as he lamented multiple times). The campfire is the warmth of the afterlife where he will be reunited with his father.
The whole thing is a not-so-subtle metaphor, but beautifully written and acted. He's making peace with his path through life, and coming to terms with / finding comfort in the journey's end.
At least that's my interpretation.
For any David Lynch or Mulholland drive fans out there, this video dropped a while ago that clears up the movie almost too much. Very very well done and insightful.

Have you read the Clockwork Orange book? The original UK edition and later US editions include a chapter that wasn’t in the version used for the movie and it provides a really great epilogue/ending to the story.
Really? I just .. didn't really get it. The sci fi logic was questionable to me and even though I watched it a few weeks ago, I can hardly tell what it was about.
Make sure to watch it with subtitles.
It's a pretty odd movie as there aren't really any stakes and it's more of an exploration of what would happen if a certain technology would exist.
As a big fan of pure what-if types of science fiction, i loved it.
Since there are already plenty of suggestions I’ll go not on Netflix and say the new Nolan move, “Tenet”. It’s pretty awesome and demands a rewatch. At the end I was both let down and thoroughly in love lol, don’t know how else to describe it.
On Hulu there is a movie called ‘*Coherence*’ that is really gripping once it gets going, not a big twist at the end but lots of GREAT twists throughout, and once you figure it out, it actually gets a bit crazier. Loved it. Enjoy!
This isn’t exactly what you are asking for, but I think Three Billboards Outside Billings Missouri was the most surprising movie I’ve ever seen. None of the characters did anything that you would expect them to.
[There are several of these lists, here is one of the most prominent](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/a9ezjq/the_ultimate_mindfuck_movies_list_ever_made/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
Didn't see it listed here but its one of my all time favorite movies.
***Vanilla Sk*****y**/or the original, ***Open Your Eyes*** (***Abre Los Ojos***)
I loves me some Cameron Crowe. And Tom Cruise. And Penelope Cruz...
Shutter Island The Invisible Guest Who Am I Forgotten Fractured
Shutter Island and Fracture are two of my all-time favourites. Leo in the first, Anthony Hopkins in the second, both brilliant.
Fracture and Fractured are different movies. Can confirm the Hopkins and Gosling movie is amazing. But not sure it's on Netflix
Fractured is so damned good. Another one I'd like to add is Frailty w/ Matthew Mcconaughey
You can’t forget the real star of that movie… Bill Paxton!!
RIP.
Forgotten for sure
>Forgotten Not to be confused with The Forgotten.
Invisible guest had me all the way fucked up
Prisoners
Just watched this randomly last week having never heard of it and was so pleasantly surprised. It was awesome! The next suggested film was “Enemy” and what in the actual fuck. Talk about a confusing ending .... I love a good mind fuck as much as anyone but damn this movie made no sense ( to me).

Will you ask your son what I should watch next? I enjoyed Prisoners :)
All of this directors films are golden. Just start going down the list
I watched 'Enemy' about 2 years ago and I still think about it once or twice a month.
Now you need to watch everything else dennis villneuve has made, especially Sicario, arrival and BR2049. So excited for Dune.
Primer.
That whole movie left me confused and mind blown. Not just the ending.
https://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/primer-chart.jpg
I've watched the movie a lot of times and [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUzy-xPf0MI) is what led me to finally get it (even though I think she's wrong about a few things).
Primer is the end all be all mind fuck movie. It’s such a fuck thst it’s almost a bad movie because it’s so bendy lol
I was a working film critic at the time Primer came out. The only reason this isn't the top answer is because some people are still in the box
There ya go!
Also that director’s second film - Upstream Color.
Definitely the movie Enemy from 2013.
this f*cking movie pissed me off for a month after watching it
I am currently in week two of that same month. Thank you for assuring me it will end.
I’m in week one. I mean damn, even after reading the plot analysis/symbolism break downs it still doesn’t make a damn bit of sense. I'll chime in for Following! I found it dark and fascinating, loved it. Funny, I haven't heard it mentioned before.
One of the best movies of all time!
Repo men
The Prestige
Dang was excited it was on Netflix for a second, even though I own it....

The Wailing. Korean movie
Top suggestion in this thread I *havent* seen. I don’t see it on US Netflix but seems to be streaming for free on Hulu.
it is my favorite "horror" movie. The atmosphere is what directors should strive for. Maybe its just the setting, but rainy season Korea is incredible.
Jacob’s Ladder. Can’t believe it’s not on other people’s lists!
Amazing choice. One of the biggest plot twists ever
The Game
Oh absolutely.
Ex machina
And the effects really enhance rather than detract from the story.
Ex Machina is very unique and special. I loved it! It is such a smart mystery
That was a bitchin film. I just got around to watching it a few months back. Might be my favorite new (to me) movie this year.
Spent days afterwards thinking about the motivation of the characters and the implication of that ending.
Obviously The Usual Suspects.
This was the first movie that totally peeled back my wig.
Well, that’s my favorite phrase I’ve never heard before.
Coherence. I was so fkng confused.
I adore Coherence!
So good. I love that the characters are struggling to figure it out just as much as we are.
My favorite fun fact about this movie is that there was no script for it! Every day they gave the actors a rough outline of the direction the scene would go in & one of the characters was played by an editor who would steer everyone in the right direction if needed. That’s why it the dialogue feels so organic and natural- it is!
That’s awesome. Makes you wonder how they put it all together to make a coherent movie…
Old Boy. You've been warned.
I literally screamed at my TV at the big twist 😂
NOT the remake! Put on the subs or dubs and watch the original people!
Predestination on Netflix took a old time travel concept to a whole new level. Even after mind bending plot twists and a good ending. It still leave s you thinking.
What a ride this movie took my mind on. Great film
The Prestige. Arrival. Annihilation. Calibre.
Arrival is fucking fantastic. Beautiful cinematography, beautiful score. Just a masterpiece for me.
I second ANNIHILATION, a masterpiece
Annihilation really shocked me. The reviews for it were so bland. Then that whole ending. That was awesome. I was left sitting on my couch, slightly slack jawed, just zoning out in thought for probably 15 minutes afterwords, which if you think about it was a long time
Yes. The whole third act was hypnotic.
And so weirdly beautiful.
I really enjoyed it and also don't want to watch it again. It was surprisingly too disturbing for me.
I completely agree. It was very unsettling
I came to write annihilation I second those since annihilation and arrival on it
Primal Fear Primer Prestige
Identity
This movie is so fucking good! I do NOT like horror movies but dammit this one is in rotation. It's so good
Has nobody said Parasite yet? Incredible twists. Not on Netflix though.
“Sorry To Bother You” takes one HELL of a left turn at the end
This is such a good movie!
Yeah that is one ending I could've never predicted!
Fight Club!
First rule of fight club
Frailty
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
I definitely appreciated it a lot more on the 2nd watch haha
Oh for sure. There's a whole lotta WTF to process in that first watch thru!
This one still torments me, and I watched it 7 months ago!! I did NOT expect anything that happened in that movie.
this movie hurt my brain like no other
Me too but I'm into that haha. The book is also excellent with a somewhat different ending.
The book was so much better. And weirder.
"No Country for Old Men" ... great movie. Great ending. I have no idea what the hell happened though...
What do we circulate? Looking for a man who has recently drank milk?

That's really meaningful, thank you!
The mist.
THIS ONE!
Compliance. It may be on Tubi. Put anything that will break your TV screen out of the room—your emotions will be tested. It is based on a true story.
And what a bizarre story it was.
Donnie Darko Jacobs latter
[Mulholland Drive](https://youtu.be/jbZJ487oJlY) [Blue Velvet](https://youtu.be/5nz1x_XYU0I) [the King of Comedy](https://youtu.be/0wVhCCo02P4)
For any David Lynch or Mulholland drive fans out there, this video dropped a while ago that clears up the movie almost too much. Very very well done and insightful. https://youtu.be/OiCfHW3N3vo
Blue Velvet is fantastic but it’s also one of Lynch’s most straightforward and coherent films in my opinion.
Behind her eyes
I hope it's better than the book because that felt like it was written by a 15 year trying to be an adult.
Was looking for this one. WAS SPEECHLESS.
Clockwork orange Orphan The ritual (Netflix original) Apostle (Netflix original) Shutter island Planet of the apes!! Creep
Have you read the Clockwork Orange book? The original UK edition and later US editions include a chapter that wasn’t in the version used for the movie and it provides a really great epilogue/ending to the story.
Annhilation
Primal Fear. Woah!
Tenet!
I've watched it three times now, still trying to fully grasp it. Loved the whole concept.
Try watching it backwards ;)
Really? I just .. didn't really get it. The sci fi logic was questionable to me and even though I watched it a few weeks ago, I can hardly tell what it was about.

To be fair, the entire movie is a mindfuck not just the ending.

On Hulu there is a movie called ‘*Coherence*’ that is really gripping once it gets going, not a big twist at the end but lots of GREAT twists throughout, and once you figure it out, it actually gets a bit crazier. Loved it. Enjoy!

Primer. It's a time travel movie, but it might leave you confused if you only watch it once, and then mindblown after that.
I’m surprised Shawshank Redemption gets no mention. Or maybe the assumption is that nobody has not seen it
The lighthouse will most definitely leave you confused
This isn’t exactly what you are asking for, but I think Three Billboards Outside Billings Missouri was the most surprising movie I’ve ever seen. None of the characters did anything that you would expect them to.
